sweet trailer! I also have a 46 T3-C. is the serial number plate still on yours? it would be on the driver's side on the front panel.
I sandblasted and powdercoated the original wheels on mine and installed 7.00x15 NDC military tube type tires so that the tires and wheels would not stick out from the fenders.
these 1/4 ton trailers are getting hard to find in decent shape.

Very nice find. I'm on the fence on bringing my M101 this weekend since my wife bailed and it is just me and my 5yo. If it was complete with my tent mounted it would be a no brainer but as of now it is only prepared for hauling mo stuff...

How much stuff are you bringing with a pickup bed and a trailer???

With extra water due to the heat, caring extra fuel and all the baby's stuff...the trailer will be making the trip!!!

Willman,
did you get the new hitch set-up installed? how did you mate the new hitch to the trailer?
I took my Bantam through some mild off road trips with the stock Fulton ball hitch, it did better than I thought it would, but a lock and roll or other type hitch would work better off road.

The hitch is all installed and looks great!!!! I took a piece of 3x3x3/16" tube and welded a plate to weld to the tonge of the trailer....The 3x3 works great letting the hitch spin 360 degrees freely. I will post some pictures soon before the weekend's Moab trip of the hitch on the trailer........

Trailer lights and repack the bearings left to go!!!

Hey Wil, you can drill the rivets out holding the plate on and get the serial# from looking at the back...they are stamped on. Email my bud at sales@armyjeepparts.com and he can punch a repo plate with your serial.

Willman,
are you going to install shocks on your Bantam? mine bounces like crazy when empty, not so bad with a load. FWIW, upper shock mounts from a WWll 1/4 ton trailer or even the later M100 trailer will bolt right up to your Bantam (not sure if the M416 mounts will work). you should already have the lower shock mounts on the axle.
I got these upper mounts from a guy on the G503.com website, they came off a M100 trailer:

Great find!! My trailer sure loves to bounce around...Shock are in-order one of these days.....I thinking of going with the AT conversion (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5452) in the long run...Shocks now will calm the ride until the money tree can grow back!!!

Nic-

I recommend playing with your tire pressure a lot. You have a lot of sidewall to work with to smooth things out a bit.

Thats in the works:

45 psi - rides like a tank!!
40 psi - little better
35 psi - Next psi to try out!

The trailer needs shocks bad!!! The leafs are stock and very stiff.....Looking at the air bag conversion to help the ride out..

Last weekend...Hit the trails in CO....She sure did some :jumping: around back their!!!

The hitch worked like champ!!! A Lock n roll hitch is the only way to go!!! Pictures of that to come...

Here's some action shots from CO...Enjoy:

Maybe we should talk.

If you'll be fabbing shock mounts from scratch, I may have a pair of shocks that will work for you. Right before the CO trip, I had a new set of adjustable Rancho 9K's put on the front of the T.

When ordering them, I forgot that I had added ball joint spacers, so I didn't compensate for the additional length needed. The shocks are not quite long enough nor are they able to take full advantage of the extra travel from the bj spacers. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and order another pair.

Seeing as how I owe you some parts anyway, if you think these may be of interest to you, let me know. I can try to sell them on a T100 board but I'd rather you have them for your trailer build if you think you could make them work. A 9 position adjustable shock might be a great solution for the varied terrain and highways your trailer will see.

Just a thought....

Great idea!!!....Right now i got my $$$$$ and time getting my dual battery and ExtremeAire installed....Having a dead compressor on the last trip made me want to get the new ExtremeAire in......I have not decided on my trailer suspension as of yet. Go ahead and sell them and get your $$$$ out of them. Thanks for the offer....I'm still dreaming of an suspension setup. Only if that money tree would just grow faster!!!:)

Installing the new brakes...

Here she is!!! I found a used set of BF AT's in a 285 for a temporary fix on 16x8 Wheelers black steelies ( type B) to match the truck......going to 255's in the future.

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f374/nicwillman/Trailer/DSC03921.jpg

The tires stuck out about 2".....Down the road...the 255's will help with that. I have about 2 1/2" in the fender at the bottom.

Still lots to do.....

Rewire trailer for brakes
Wire tow rig w/ brake controller
bath!
Lid for the RTT

I wish i had your type of fenders......

I thinking if taking a piece of black rubber to extend them out.

Something like this:

Nice idea with the rubber...

I just finished the new custom hitch and fender widening on my second M101 - we took 1/8 X 4" steel extending the fenders from the tub outward - a bit easier on the M101 due to the angle bends (not round) I needed to go 3" to cover the tires.

Right on DD....

Any pictures of the install???

I thought about doing that.......We have a metal roller in our Blacksmiths shop that would do the trick to get that material round to fit the fender......Rubber seems easyer and will give the Toyota flare look just like the tow rig.....Going for the matching look i guess...

Lookin' good! I continue to be envious, and may have to finally do something about that envy in 2008.

Do you happen to know (or could you measure) the width of the trailer at its widest point with stock tires? I'm assuming that the fender is wider than the hub, from the pictures and from samples I've seen. Since I'm super tight on driveway and garage space, I'd love to be able to park one inside of my regular utility trailer.

And for those who are in the know, is there any material difference in terms of overall width between the Bantam, M416, and M101 trailers?

M101 size drawing (http://idisk.mac.com/desertdude-Public/Portalwebphotos/M101.size.drawings.pdf) (under frame size) the custom tongue is an additional 38.5 inches (approx.) out from the bottom tub edge.

[EDIT]
Actual outside dimensions - 48" X 73" tub - wheels & fenders 8" (each) Total width 64" (outside wheel to wheel) Length including tongue 111.5 "

Total footprint dimensions - 64" X 111.5"

Very nice trailer. I am at a crossroads with my M416. It is all stock except for the lights and I can't bring myself to cut a tailgate in it. I'd like to build it up as there are 5 of us and a Chocolate Lab in the family.

I'm probably going to put a spare tire mount from a pickup under it for a spare tire and some can mounts as one of the first mods.

That is a really clean looking trailer. Nice can holders on the tongue.

I wonder on the fenders if you could cut them in half, spread them apart and weld in a small flat section at the top. That way you could accommodate the larger tires as well as keeping some of the original shape??

That is a really clean looking trailer. Nice can holders on the tongue.

I wonder on the fenders if you could cut them in half, spread them apart and weld in a small flat section at the top. That way you could accommodate the larger tires as well as keeping some of the original shape??

Great idea!

But.....I was thinking of conning 2 fenders off you guys......:chowtime:

With your skills, I'd make a set. Not very hard to do. We made up a set for my friend's trailer using cardboard to lay it out then cut up some 1/8" steel plate, bent it using a home made metal bender in a shop press then welded it up. Came out lookin great. I'll see if I can find some pictures.

Cheers,

This is what I'd do!
That, or cut off the inner & outer lips and weld or rivet them to a wider rolled band. My grandfather did it this way (riveted) on the utility trailer I'm about to inherit.

I have the slam lock (http://www.allegiscorp.com/DisplayPartAction.do?partId=24648&groupId=869&groupElementId=5&displayTemplate=/jsp/displayDetailTemp_39.jsp&cat=Multi-Point+Latching+Systems) set up

It does work well and is a very clean set up but..

If I were to so it over again (which I might) I would copy AT's lock/clamp design.
(apologies to Mario and Martyn)

The reason is it is more of a compression lock and you can really clamp it down onto the weather stripping for a tight seal. And the mechanism is all on the outside, no need to worry about something getting stuck or out of adjustment (where you can't get the lid open) Ask me how I know when we are around the campfire...:smileeek:

We are temporarily out of stock on the can holders.

The price of the raw materials increased significantly so we are shopping the design around to various fabricators trying to reduce the cost of manufacturing. So far we haven't had much luck, and we do not intend to have them made overseas to save a buck.

Great point here Kurt!.....What did you replace it with?? (SS or just steel)

Mounting options with the steel were great....Price was cheaper than others (SS, Alum).......I'm going to have to keep her all lubed up and store out of the weather......Little WD-40 after trips and a few shots of lube to keep the rust out.....

Time will only tell......Going to keep a close watch on this...I want it to last for years!

Looks real good....have a question , though....from what I have been seeing on the trailers, there is a prefernce to having the hinge on the side and not the front...is there a specific reason ?

Thanks

ntsqd
01-16-2008, 06:29 PM
FWIW consider something other than WD-40 for the hinge. Based on my experiences in cleaning customer firearms that were lubed with it, it isn't all that great at keeping the crud out.

My lube de jour is Maxima Motorcycle Chain Wax which isn't wet or sticky/gummy once the solvent has evaporated. The only failure place for it so far has been the door limiters in the Suburban.

Matt, I suspect that an end opening lid would be harder to open due to where the CG of an RTT would be. Could be offset with higher lift value gas springs.....

How stiff is your lid? I used angle iron for my lid and skinned it. it is very flexable. I flat mounted my tent on the lid with rubber mounts but it was still to flexable so I took the rubber pads out and now the structure of the tent has really stiffened up the lid. This works fine but now I want to put a rack rails in so I can haul other things on the Trailer Like a couple of bikes.

My next version of a lid will be similar to the adventure trailer lid. so I can get taller stuff in there. I am at my limit. and still wish to put more stuff in there.

also If you change your gas strut location or length you can really get it to open up. Seems like a tight squeese to pack it at that angle.

What are you doing with your old fenders? need to sell them?

Here is mine so you can see how wide you can get it to open with a different arangement of struts.
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/1270/medium/DSC05108.JPG

The 1800 is a great tent. perfect size for the trailer and my family.

When I built my lid I wanted it to open from the side as it allows easier access. you don't have to reach as far to get to everything. Another possible reason is if your tent hinges on the same side as the lid hinge you can open your trailer with the tent deployed, rather than fold up the tent then open the traler. This is one more thing I discovered after the fact. I need to turn my tent around.

Hey does anybody know if the dimensions on a Adventure trailer lid are similar to a Bantam. Could one be retrofitted to work?

Maximus Ram
01-16-2008, 07:53 PM
I was just curious , because the trailer that i aquired for free is made from an old Willys truck bed w/ tailgate and seeing how xtra bracing was needed to put the strut in got me to thinking. But that would make sense on it being able to open when the RTT is deployed.

Thanks

How stiff is your lid?

Solid! I used 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" tube instead of the 1"x1" as i said earlyer......My shop guys gave me the wrong stuff on the our metal rack and i went to town on the 1 1/4" tube with my frame on my lid.....

I really like the 1 1/4" tube better than the 1" stuff.....It feels more solid.

also If you change your gas strut location or length you can really get it to open up. Seems like a tight squeese to pack it at that angle.

Nice choice Nic, I have looked at those when I built mine but could not come up of a mounting idea because of the angle between the lid lip and the tub body. It seems as though you'll need a straight up and down angle between the two parts. I thought about building a spacer plate for that reason, but seemd like too much of a problem.
I'd love to see your solution when you come up with one bud. to lock my lid I just drilled a hole into the lid, framework and inserted a ballmount lock. I saw the method here on the trailer forum a while back and it looked like a simple solution.

First, going to see what i'm up against when the parts get here.....

Few options:

Spacer plate bolted on the trailer box (straight up and down angle between the two parts)

See if the latch can pull off that angle....Might have to fab up a shim on the top (lid) part at an angle to take some of the stress off

The parts should get here soon.....I'll make something work......Gotta love custom work!!!!

Is the discussion about those draw-latches being able to pull at angle other than 90* relative to, say, the seal surface?

If so, I don't see any issue beyond being able to actually be able to get the bail over the anchor. There will be a loss in clamping strength in the vertical plane (trig), but I somehow doubt that's an issue with these in this application. :)

Lock N' Roll is a great hitch setup!

I have loved mine!

Great offroad hitch!......Another great point is that the trailer becomes harder to steal if i make a basecamp for a few days.....I also do carry a 12' chain with a lock to keep the honest........honest.....

The lock-n-roll seems fine, and true, it would be much harder to steal. It is just to "busy" with more potential failure points for my tastes, especially since I am already kitted out with the pintle hook.

Please realize that I mean no ill will. I work in an industry that does failure analysis and I just think simplicity. It is how I am programmed.

Nic,

Have you thought about a receiver extension? I used an 11" receiver extension on the tongue of the trailer so that I can clear my rear door. Redline did something similar, but he had a longer one custom made. The one here (http://www.etrailer.com/p-RM-071.htm)may not be the right length, but there are other options out there.

I like this, because it's not permanent and it give's me just enough clearance if the trailer is straight behind, and plenty of clearance if I turn slightly to the left. This might still work even if you're on tight trails, because you wouldn't have to turn as much to the left.

I'm just throwing that out there before you start cutting.

You can connect the trailer and test a couple slight left turns and measure the clearance you need. As noted, the 11" might not be enough to clear that swing-a-way.

Here are several more options if you need more clearance:

http://www.etrailer.com/c-extender.htm

At first I laughed at the ones with the step included. But now I wish mine had it for hopping inbetween truck and trailer isntead of walking all the way around.

Yes, if you install it in the hitch receiver on the truck, but only minimally if you install it on the trailer in order to lengthen the tongue.

The coupler would remain in the same location with regard to the truck.

Extending the tongue will only affect break-over angle somewhat (between rear axle and trailer axle), but with the clearance that he has on his truck and trailer, it will probably not be an issue.

So was I, and was about to caution on what that would do to leverage against the hitch frame. What about effective tongue weights etc.? I've not had occasion to tow with the TrailBlazer's extendable tongue in the extended position.

First off...Welcome to the ExPo!

I got my axle with brakes from a local trailer parts store.....I shopped around pretty hard and decited it was a better deal to keep my $$$$ here in my state. Shipping killed the deal...plus i have a shop and people to talk to if i have a question.

Sure, I want to put wider tires on the axle, but the stock axle is more than likely going to be too short I would imagine, unless I put spacers in.

Could I just change out the bolt pattern to fit my wheels and add a spacer if needed?

Still lots to do.....

Is there any chance you saved the part #'s and company you ordered these items from? And possibly the cost?

I have a Bantam, and was thinking of having the hubs redrilled for toyota 6 lug. The quote was 110.00 from the local axle shop.

I am interested in replacing the complete axle.

After reading all the pages I caught the "local trailer parts shop", I am still interested in the part #'s or perhaps the width of axle.

Also, why brakes. I am a newbie to the offroad trailer thing. I don't see the "need for brakes" On a 1/4 ton trailer. (please explain)

Welcome to the ExPo!

I have no part #'s for you.....It is a 3500 lb. axle with 10" drums brakes 6 on 5.5 lugs....$257 out the door if i remember right......(complete -axle,brakes,bearings,etc.)

Brakes???

- When going down a very steep drop......worth every penny!

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f374/nicwillman/Moab%205-26-08/DSC04597.jpg

- I can lock the brakes up to jack knife if i get in a tight spot on a trail and need to backup quick.

- If i don't want the trailer to go over a rock or stump.....I can lock the brakes and drag the trailer bumping pass the object.

Overall.....having brakes on my trailer has been the best mod besides my Eezi-Awn!

Hope this helps!

I have been wanting to weld in a hitch for the longest time!....Well...got some time from school....

All primed up! Needs a coat of black....

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f374/nicwillman/Trailer/DSC05875.jpg

Note to self.....I hate overhead welding!!!.....My welds always suck!...If i had more time and a helper....I would have used my bridge crane to hoist the trailer in the air....oh well...:ylsmoke:

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f374/nicwillman/Trailer/DSC05877.jpg

I'm going to be doing some testing with this hitch setup....My trailer box is welded to the frame....most boxs i have seen are bolted to the frame...

I might need to add some steel strapping like a "V" style on the middle channel.....

In my opinion...I would not pull extremely hard in a recovery situation with the tow rig.....The frame seems to be pretty light to me...

The hitch is going to be used for a bike rack and for light recovery.

Be carefull how much weight you put on the back hitch unless you add an equal amount up front also - otherwise you'll have the tail wagging the dog if you know what I mean.LOL

Hey Nic, looking good... Bummer because we have an overhead chain hoist that could have done the trick.. Looks good though, agreed the frames are a little chincy but that will be fine for almost all recoveries and as much towing as that trailer could handle IMO, looks strong :) Also really good reading about your brakes, has me thinking... :sombrero:

Hello. New to the forum. I'm trying to rebuild a M-416 and am having my friend do the metal work.

What did you mean by bumping pass the object (referencing brakes). I'm trying to figure out my best suspension option here. Did you check out Adventure Trailer's kit? I e-mailed about them because I saw it on someone else's build. It's expensive but probably works really well.

Did you happen to mention where you got your axle? I saw a place in Alabama I can get some stuff for a good price.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Saw you talked about the AT suspension. After sending them an e-mail though....

Chris

We still offer the independent suspension system. It's a little more complex than the original set up and needs to be installed by our fabricators.

Cost runs around $2000.00

Great Job! :victory:

Your trailer jumps a lot when on the road do not have weight???

If you ever choose to build a trailer, I copy many of your ideas, sorry amigo! :sombrero: :sombrero:

My custom M-416 bounces around in the back without weight (over some bumps on dirt roads). Nothing that a 4600-5000 lb FJ Cruiser can't handle (modded or else the curb weight would be 4290).

When it isn't loaded correctly (box was shaved off in the front so everything heavy needs to be loaded towards the front as much as possible till I put an air compressor and generator in front of the box) it'll sway pretty bad around 60 mph.

William, what did you end up using for shocks? After taking my Bantam out on its maiden trip, I find that it bounces a lot!

MERCURY-VILLAGER-Shock-Absorber-MONROE

I used Monroe shocks and they seem to do pretty well. Got em cheap off of eBay.

Could you please give me the dimensions on the AT fenders? I need to place mine and love the look of these but AT is out of stock! I have a buddy who owns a 4x4 shop and can fab them but I need the specs. Thanks,

Sorry everyone....didn't see i had some hits on my thread....

Nothing as of yet....I air down my tires to 20-25 psi on the road.....Keeping the psi low offroad helps with the bumps..

With having brakes on the trailer....I can lockup the brakes and make the tire bump off the object instead of going over it....usually big objects that the trailer could roll.

AT sells the king of all suspension kits if you have the money and fab skills. I know they can also do the swap for you...

Packing your trailer right with all the weight balance is key....Having a lid plus a Eezi-Awn (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=21) has been a great mod for the trailer....It helps in keeping things balanced..

Hope this helps!

It doesn't take that many skills.....Wish you luck on your project.

A trailer is sure fun to have until my lab puppy decides to snack on my trailer wiring....
