View Full Version : Desert Rat Adventure......wandering around Utah

When I was a young kid I would read in magazines tales of the travels of the Turtle Expedition and their adventures traveling the world, pretending I was there with them. On family trips to southern Utah I look out the window lusting to see the canyons in the distance our van couldn't go. I read books that detailed amazing journeys and adventures that others had taken. I would oogle muddy 4x4's as I passed going the other direction wondering what adventures they had seen. I think is is safe to say I was bitten by "wanderlust" at a young age.

Fast forward to the last few years:
During my time in college I promised myself on many occasions that if I studied my hardest and passed a class I was struggling in and could manage a good grade I would reward the effort by going out and exploring. I would study my hardest, exceed my expectations and get excited about the reward. But then reality would sink in.....it was the end of the semester and I was completely broke and without the vehicle or equipment for such a proposition. Finally graduation day came: I worked hard and supprised myself by graduated with honors, but still hadn't gone camping. Time passed and I got a new Jeep, started rebuilding it and had saved up a little bit of money. I finally had the means to reward myself for all the effort that I had put forth into school. Only problem was was deciding where I should go? Sitting next to my computer was a growing list with pages of places that I longed to visit. Then the crazy thought struk me: "Why not just visit all of them?" "Have I gone crazy", I thought to myself.....but then started to realize that right now was the time in my life for do a trip like that. I am single, have only a few bills, no girlfriend, no apartment or lease, haven't started my career. It seemed there was really nothing tying me back. It struck me that a chance like this only happens once in a lifetime and its not likely that the stars would align again as they had at this time. I put my bills on auto pay and started researching: I did not want to live with the regret of not following my dreams.

Thats how we got here: me sitting in my roof top tent on the outskirts of the remains of a ghost town, in the middle of nowhere, hours from the nearest town, yet feeling the happiest I have felt in a long time.

I hope that you will follow me along my adventure as it unfolds. I invite you to share it with like minded friends and to ask quesions if any come up along the way. (I only ask you be patient, internet service is rather sparce on the dusty two tracks far from civilition. I may be a bit slow in responding) And thanks to all those who have helped me realize this dream by being supportive and helping me along the way!

Enjoy

I plan on spending about two or so months living out of the Jeep, really just depends on how far the money I have set aside holds out. Maybe my title should have been "The coolest place nobody has ever heard of.......except the cool kids" It was good to meet you in the Wendover pits, that class 5 looked fast as it flew by!

Thanks everybody for the kind words of support! I hope you enjoy following me as I wander around.

I cant tell you how many times I heard people say "I wish I would have done something like that when I was younger." Being born in raised in Utah there is defiantly a push for working to acquire a wife/ family/ house by the time your my age. I decide long ago that I was not going to put my dreams on hold for anything, the responsibilities of life will still be there when I get back, i don't want to regret the things i "could have done" in the future.

It was good to meet you too. Its always nice to be able to put a face to a screen name. All it took to get the cable fixed was a pair of vice grips and a zip tie. Thanks for radioing Jason and having him pull over to see how the repair was going!

I am glad (and honored) that you are enjoying my updates. I am a bit ashamed to say that I have gotten a little behind on posting them up......and currently my adventure is on pause pending two quick repairs :( I most certainly agree that Utah is a fine location to wander in a Jeep. There is so much that this great state has to offer and its all right in my backyard!:smiley_drive:

Ok folks that last post will get you up to speed with my adventure! I have spent since Sunday till today (Friday) waiting for the new throttle cable and preparing to get back on the road again.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UqHM04ngvCo/TekhF0lB51I/AAAAAAAAAOE/x17a4KKWREY/s400/IMG_1257.JPG

The bracket that holds the striker pin for the door was very broken. The cracks in the bracket made it impossible for the drivers side door to open. Mu throry is vibration from the door rattling on the washboard roads caused the cracks. I was able to weld up the cracks and make it work. The welds arent the prettiest since I am terrible at welding sheet metal. But with a little grinding and a little paint, makes a welder what he aint!

I got the tires re-balanced also. Apparently my little trip up Goshute Canyon on the way to the Oro Dey Ray mine removed all the wheel weights for me. On the same trail a rick ripped a large hole in the bottom of my muffler, I got several price quotes and deceided that I will just have to deal with the added noise for now. In reality most of these repairs were just minor annoyances and none of them would have left me stranded........but all of them combined were sure annoying!

Anyways I am headed back out on the road here in a few minutes. Thanks for following me on my adventure and in a few days I ought to have some stuff to post up for you!

Hey Daniel, I read your blog a couple days ago and now look forward to the additions. I travel up 93 thru the basin every august for speedweek and although I never have the time to look around it sure seems like some really cool country to explore. I have poked around the hills northeast of Wendover and the Newfoundlands but only when weather puts a stop to running on the salt for a day or so. Anyhow just wanted to say Hello and that I really enjoy you blog. If you make it to Speedweek this summer keep an eye out for my truck.http://i700.photobucket.com/albums/ww4/Timber5086/Bonneville%202010/P1050068.jpg I generally dry camp at the reservoirs just up from the bend in the road, Cant see them from the road and never more than myself and one other guy there all week. Except for the bighorns and ewes that wander thru in the evening to drink out of the reservoir. Talk to you later. Tim

Ok folks that gets you caught up to where I was on Thursday night......I am in St George tonight so I should be able to get you all caught up tomorrow.

To all EXPO members in central and or southern Utah: Does anyone have a used 31" tire that is good for a spare? (Preferably on the cheap) I have had three flat tires so far this and I have been traveling without the safety of a backup tire.......ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

I have some 32" tires that are good enough for spares, you can have them. While in St. George, remember to see Silver Reef area.

Thanks to StaceyE and his tremendous generosity I now have a NEW spare! Long story short the 32's were actually 33's so he hooked me up with a new one. Thanks again Stacey for being so gracious and helping out a fellow Jeeper. Not only did he give me a tire, he showed me some cool ruins, let me camp on his property outside of town, let me stay at his house and use his poolside cabana to shower and refresh......in fact I am typing this from there now.

A million thanks StaceyE!!!!!!!! I can never thank you enough!

The pix from Antelope Slope Canyon are brilliant.
Another place to add to the list. Interesting notion where reality meets the road to $$$.
Similar with some of the cliff dwellings. Unfortunate, but the price you now have to pay to see some of these places.

Ok folks its long past time that I give you an update.........sorry for neglecting anyone following me along.

As cruiseroutfit mentioned I was a special visitor on the Relic Run. I had an absolute blast hanging out with like minded individuals in the unique setting of the Relic Run. It has spurred on an interest in vintage camping gear and has sent me hunting for old gear at local thrift stores and netted me some awesome finds!

Short story about what happened with to me and my adventure: While I was staying in Moab when I got a call informing me that my Grandmother was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer. Feeling that my presence was needed with my family I headed northward to home. While at home I had transmission issues (lost fifth gear), attended the relic run, lost my job, received a possible book offer, etc, etc.......needless to say the trip has been put on hold.

I have already written most of the blog updates up to when I ended my trip however I have had little time/ desire to be on the internet in light of recent events. (If the moderators would like to move this to the "Completed Adventures" section that would be fine) I do plan on posting up what material and pictures I have here in a week or so when thing start returning to normal.

The adventure will never over, just the focus and pace have changed somewhat. All is well and I will be returning to Blog and the my wanderings as soon as time will allow me to.
