I am the proud owner of a Lexus LX-450, I have been exploring for a couple of years, usually i do camping mix with hotels.

Just a couple of months ago my LX-450 turn 100k and it was time to let go or to do my PM.

I have been very please with this vehicle and since I have never own a vehicle with over 100k miles, I was sceptical to keeping and doing all the PM and Mods I have been thinking on doing!

I finally made a desicion to keep this vehicle for another 100k ( I hope ) and do some PM and Mods.

1. Old Men Emu Suspension Medium
I have the Yoko's Geolanders AT+II tires 285's
2. Light Switches for lights
( Yellow Top Optima Battery )
3. ARB Roof Rack small ( to carry fuel and water )
4. Safari Snorkel
5. Slee Short Bus Bumper
6. Warner m8000 winch
7. Nato gas containers 2
8. Nato water containers 2
9. Hella 500 4 on roof
(I have installed the PIAA 520 ION long range yellow light)
10. Slee Sliders

I have the first three done, and my questions are as follow!

Am I correct in choosing the Hella 500 lights to install on the roof rack?

Would the Specter gas conteiners be safe to carry on the ARB Roof Rack, and I am planning on installing the A/T Gas Carriers with locks?

Need some help and what are you thoughts?

Lookin' good bro.

The spector cans should be fine up on the rack as long as they seal real good like the NATO style. Make sure to get some can brackets to hold them properly.

I am looking at the Spectra or should I go with Nato, would the A/T carriers be stout enough for the ARB Roof Rack?

How about your lights on the top, do they give you the light that you need on the trails?

i have installed the Roof Rack and will post pictures tomorrow.

NATO is not a brand.. NATO is a style of can. http://www.britishpacific.com/landroverparts/NATOjerryCans.html

The AT carrier should work fine, but may be heavy up there. I would only do 2 of them probably to keep the weight down.

Im running HELLA 500's up top and they work okay up there. The biggest problem is the lights blinding you from the hood glare.. you really have to watch this if your lights sit out passed the window.

Hood blackout may help with this, I know it worked wonders for the sun glare.

I have install the ARB Roof Rack hald size 43"x49", it comes with mesh floor and air deflector, it weights 120lbs. and will hold up to 220lbs.
In city driving I can not tell I have it on top, in the hwy at 65 miles per hour I do not hear any wind noise!
At 70 miles per hour i can tell there is some wind noise however I need to turn the radio off in order for me to hear the wind noise.
At 75 miles per hour I can hear wind noise.
This roof rack is made to last, it is very well made and I will recommend buying one!
I installed the roof rack on top of my old oem roof rack because I did not want to take it off. It will clear if you set the ajustable feet to the highest mark!
I am presently wating for my Nato gas carriers and gas holders, I did order them in olive color!

Overall I am very satisfied with the ARB Roof Rack.

Here are some pictures of the Rack.

They are here!

My NATO Gas Carriers and can holders are here.

They are great quality, the carrieres come with some rubber mountings so you mat not get any rattles, the gas containers come with some nice pins, and they are very high quality, I order them in Olive color, because I did not like the red color on top of my roof.

I will mount them on the ARB Roof Rack and will let you know how they perform in the real world.
Overall I am very happy with the quality of these set up!

Thanks again SOCALFJ

Those nato cans and carriers look good!

I'm going do something a little bit different when I finally get a roof rack. I've got those same style cans, except the smaller 2.5 gallon version. I've got about 4 of them, plus a couple of 1.5 gallon cans, which are really neat, but not much useful in a 12mpg vehicle. :)

With the smaller cans, they can be mounted up right, and not stand as tall and with less gallons per can, there's less sloshing of fuel or weight transfer and the smaller cans are much easier to fill with.

But like I said, that locking gas can carrier looks awesome!

I can testify to the strenght of that gas can design. A few years back I had a 2.5 gallon nato can in the back of my CRX on a particular hot day. Because the rear window acts like a greenhouse, I imagine temps got VERY high, because my square gas can was round the next day. But the welds held and not one hint of gas vapor.

Of course, lesson learned.

Will post pictures as soon as possible!

I am also looking into a Warner winch at this time, I am looking at the m8000 or mile marker.

I do not think I will use very often, so I need to make decision soon!

I will also go to the heavy springs in the front or maybe the J's unsure yet ( after the winch installation ) since I do not want any vibrations and would like to have the same suspension feeling that i have right now!

Soon my next tires would be the TOYO MUD TERRAIN in a 315 size, followed by some possible gear's.

You guys are braver than me. I'd love to have a snorkle, but I can't bear the thought of cutting into perfectly good sheet metal. It was a lot easier to cut and drill and poke holes and paint and do all kinds of thing to my old truck, but not this new one. If I just had a perfectly good matching fender all painted and standing by, I could probably do it. LOL!!

Your Lexus is looking good by the way. :)

PS: I didn't see any further mention about what winch you were going to get. You can usually get pretty good deals on a standard, very basic WARN M8000, in the $500 dollar range. I picked up a brand new one for just over $500 on sale at 4wheelparts a few months ago. Like you, I don't expect to use it much, but I want something that is actually going to work when I need it, and I've had really good luck with Warn winches over the years.

8000lbs is not a lot and you rarely get to use full capacity anyway, so don't forget to pick up a snatchblock so you can double line if you need too.

as for the winch I am looking into the Warner 8000,as you stated it should be good enough for me, however I am unsure on which would be my next mod, I am looking into Slee Sliders, rear bumper or winch for the month of September, i like to keep on doing one or two mods per month!

As for the ARB Bumper I hope to have it installed by this coming Friday!

That's a tough call. Of course it all depends on your driving. If you go off road at all, of all the things you mentioned, only the winch can actually save you.

If you get into a situation where you might need sliders, you're in a situation where a winch may be necessary.

I went through the same thought process as I only had so much funds left and I put off the sliders and rear bumper in favor of the winch just for that reason. I'm careful where I go so as not to cause rocker damage, until protection can be installed.

I've used the winch for utility work on our research projects, but I purchased it first, mainly for peace of mind and knowing that if I'm in the middle of nowhere and ran off the road or got stuck in a mudhole that was deeper than it looked, with no help, sliders and rear bumber aren't going to look like the wisest priority.

Plus winter and snow are just around the corner. But there are other factors to consider, such as if you always travel with more than one vehicle or almost never go off road, a winch is not as high a priority

Double lined, its 16000lbs. I would imagine that would do it, or break something trying.

In most cases yes. If it has trouble you double the line on it.

We run a m12000 Warn on our rig. Thank god too, cause we weigh 7,000+ lbs fully loaded. Also, we had to pull out a F350 4x4 out the other day and it pulled without even hesistating.

I have the Warn 8000 on my 80. It has only seen use a couple of times so far...

However, make sure you get the correct "accessories."
Shackle
Gloves
Chain
Tree Strap (or two)
Snatch Block (doubler)

Another item to think of is the pull-pal. I have been contemplating purchasing one b/c we often travel solo. And especially in Baja where there often aren't very many BIG trees for anchors.

great device for self-recovery in combination with the winch.

Of the three (winch, sliders, bumper) I'd say it depends on what you will be doing for the next month (assuming the next month you can do one of the other mods, and on what kind of trips you will be taking).

I'd say if you are going out alone anywhere, get the winch. If you are going out with several trucks where body damage may occur, get the sliders. Either way, I would do the rear bumper last.

So you sent it out for powder coat before mounting it or did you paint it yourself? Is it supposed to be the flare color or the body color? Totally looks different with the two tone black tube for sure. Do you have any above shots showing where the paint stops and the black starts? I was wondering how it looked with the welds right there.

A completely different look, and I am unsure if I like them like this!

I am looking into installing Fog lights made by Hella in a yellow or amber color!

Unsure at this point!

I had it painted by some vendors that I have used in the past, as far as the color it is color match to the flares.

I will take some pictures in the morning and will post them.

Iam also having second thoughts about the lights mounted that high, however at night I tested them and they seem to put out a better spread.

Let's see if I have time to switch them back!:arabia:

No I have not decided, however I am considering the Warn name Brand as the winch to get!

I am also looking into getting the Hanna Rear Bumper just because of the 3 gas can holder,( I which Slee would make a rear bumper with this feature ) it seems easier to handle the Nato Cans, plus i will be getting a better departure angle? Since I will move the spare to the back and I could remove my towing hitch!( my protection for my rear bumper ):wings:

What are you going to use the rig for? That would be a good starter for people to recommend a rear bumper.

Well the main reason I feel I need a rear bumper is to be able to get that spare tire out from under the vehicle, I have the towing packg and for now it is my protection to the rear, however i keep on hitting my rear all the time when I am in some trails.

As for the rig, I want to continue going in the trails to Baja and in the near future to Alaska.

I am not into rock crawling, nor I think I will ever be I am more into exploring virgin bay areas, and trails.

I also know that Slee is coming out with a new bumper, I do not know what the main differences might be, however they are at my top list.

Hanna makes a great rear bumper, with some good options... decisions decisions.

I think one of my main concerns would be wich ever bumper I choose, I do not want it to block my rear lights.

Oh! and I will color match the bumper to silver, I may just do the bottom part of the truck in the same silver color.

I'd get a slider before a rear bumper. Even though you're not into rock crawling, your "virgin bay area" explorations might take you to some rock infested areas. Just an opinion. :)

But good-looking rig, nonetheless!

We run slee's step sliders. They're a perfect combination for what we do which would be dirt roads and occasional rocks here and there. Plus you can stand on them to strap your junk down on your rack.

Thanks, I finally made a decision to keep the vehicle for awhile, so I gave my self 6 months last year to do some mod's, and I was done in 4 months, However the more I would do the more I want!

Now I am planning on doing the sliders followed by the rear bumper, better suspension and a few little things.

Those 520's would work good on the bumper, since they are ion. Ion lights are ideal for fog, which means the lower the light, the better it works (if you get much fog in Texas?, I know we get plenty up here). By the way, really nice LX!
