I always said the H3 should have gotten the larger I6 instead of the I5, now they are going to offer it with the 5.3 L V8. More power and more payload/towing. Sounds like a nice option to offer, minus the crome.
Perhaps 09 or 10 will see the introduction of the new diesel v8 into the H3 lineup.

So I guess we know that the upcoming 4.5L "Duramax" will fit in there too?

The Vortec I4/5/6 engines were some of the best stuff I've seen from GM in ages and they'z plumb gonna pull the whole drivetrain in favor of the everloved marketing campaign called the V8. Sheesh.
Let me guess, they'll offer now only automatics. Sounds like Toyota.
the 4.8/5.3 gm motors are also some of the best. I bet the H3 will get better mileage with the 5.3 than it did with the 5 cyl. I know a few guys with 1/2 ton chevs with teh 5.3 that get low to mid 20's mpg on the freeway! and my friends LS1 camaro (5.3) gets 25 mpg cruising in 6th on the freeway. and he can still punch it and pass almost anything if need be.
Other freinds have an envoy with a inline 6 its a good motor but the front diff is part of the oilpan!!! I kid you not!

Chet, no doubt that GM's V8s are fine machines that have undergone years of development and refinement with some decent mileage considering their output.
What I'm referring to is the qualification of the power and torque bands. It's not the quantity of torque/power that's important to me, but rather the shape and ability of it for my needs. The I5 (and I4) is IMO especially impressive due it's overstroked design and it's low 2800rpm torque apex, vs. the 4800rpm on the I6. The I6 on the other hand IIRC has placed a few Baja racers in the V8 categories. It's qualities and ratings look perfect for off-road racing.
The 4.8 & 5.3 are both overbored engines. I can't immediately find the torque apex, but my guess is it's well above 4k RPMs but I could be wrong.

I don't understand how the torque peak could be 2000 RPM different between the 3.5L and the 4.2L. They are the same engine with the exception of one extra/less cylinder. No difference in bore or stroke. Maybe the 3.5 doesn't use variable valve timing? The torque peak on the new punched out 3.7L is at 4200 RPM, same as the 4.2L.

No difference in bore or stroke.
Maybe a significantly different intake? or valving and cam? Timing would obviously be different, but could only make slight changes.
Odd that you say 4200 on the 3.7? I remember the peak being low and pulled the #s from Wikipedia and GM:

The latter link shows the new 3.7 at a high 4600 :(

I'm here, but as Calamaridog stated I'm kind of busy driving the new Jeep. The Alph should be awesome. I had a deadline on the new purchase and the Alpha was not available. I'm still guessing on the pricing. Last I heard just under 50K, Ouch.
this is the website i use to get specs on my truck/I5 engine:
http://www.trucktrend.com/roadtests/pickup/163_0402_2004_chevrolet_colorado/specs_overview.html
it lists it at 225 @ 2800 rpm. while i will gladly admit my truck is not perfect, i feel the engine is a homerun. ample power ( let's be honest with what we "need", not what we "want") with great fuel economy. 22 mixed driving and approx. 28 best hwy.

I think the I5 is great in the truck but not enough in the H3, but that is just my hunch.
GM has definitely built some good motors lately.
