I may be late to the game, but I couldn't find mention of it previously:

Terrabrowser will find topo maps and sat photos for entered locations off the web. You can then download regions surrounding the location making custom maps. Will also com with GPS. Database is the USGS topo map set, so currently only works for the US. Pretty cool though.

Has anyone used this with a USB Garmin? I have a G5 PM and a GPSMap 76CSX and cannot upload streets or topos because there's no official support yet. I can barely even manage waypoints through Google Earth.

Unfortunately, no Garmin GPS supports raster imagery right now. You only have a couple of options for Topo Data, most notably Garmin's Mapsource which is Vector Topographic maps.

To view this sort of data you typically view it on your laptop. You hook the GPS up not to transfer the data to the GPS, but so the GPS can send it's current location to the laptop. The laptop typically uses this location to show where you are on the map.

You can achieve a similar setup with a PDA, or DeLorme's new GPS.
