What are you guys wearing? How long have you had it and how is it holding up? I am looking for a new watch after my scratch and dent REI highgear watch died last week. I've had good luck with Timex, but I want something more "adult" looking that I can wear to work and out on the trail. I need something that will handle abouse.

I've been looking into g-shock watches. I like the Atomic clock and solar features. I travel alot for work so one less thing to adjust to local time when I land would be nice. Also really like the negative face look (black with white/silver numbers).

What are you all using and how does you like them? I'd like to stay under $150 it its possible, but I can move around a bit on the price for the right tool.

I bought a Luminox Navy Seal Colormark a few years back to replace another watch that I still have, but no longer wear.

The Luminox has gas lights built in that illuminate the dial and hands all the time, no need for sunlight to charge them like other watches.

The gas lights put out a lot of light so you can see the dial/hands very easily when it is dark out.

http://www.luminox.com/assets/Pictures/Products/A.3067_big.png

http://www.luminouswatchshop.com/luminox-3067-evo-navy-seal-dive-watch-colormark.html

My intentions were to use it as my work watch, and my other one for non work.
I like the Luminox so well it is the only watch I have worn now for the past few years.

It gets bumped and scraped against things at work, and it looks like the day I bought it, zero wear on it.

The original band broke, I now have a better one for it.

I also like how simple it is, just a date on it and a second hand.

I bought a Suunto X-Lander about 7 years ago. I was going through other watches like crazy. I decided to go with one that had something other than metal for the battery cover. I've had this one for 7 years and have replaced the battery only twice. It's more than $150, but an amazing watch. It keeps great time and is super tough.

Awesome, thanks. I'll just look through those. Thanks everyone else for your responses. I really like Luminox's and I might have to bite the bullet and throw down some carsh for one. Suunto's are also great, I used to sell them, but could not afford the one I wanted (Core, all black)

A bit more than $150, I wear a Hamilton Khaki Aviator (yes, I am a pilot) Automatic watch. Been through two leather watch bands since I bought it in 2005 and the black painted increments and numbers on the outer E6B calulator have worn away. Everybody thinks its a Brietling...

I like my 5.11 Tactical watch. It has a built in ballistics calculator, which is nice if I'm doing any shooting. Been wearing it for a bit over a year now. Before that, (and still now, if I'm not bringing my rifle) I'd wear a Suunto Vector. (nice altimeter and compass features) Had the Vector for almost a decade.

For in today's world, no less being out in the boonies, who for God's sakes needs a watch? Paleeeeeze I got rid of mine when my cell phone was as big as a brick. Honestly....what would you do with it???? Check some ones pulse? Get into the 2011's + some plus some. I plan to never own a watch again.....same goes for a typewriter. Give me a break!!!

I had a Highgear that died on me recently. I replaced it with a Suunto Core. So far I love it. The altimeter is much more accurate than the Highgear was, the display is better, and it's lower profile.

I work event security for a large multi-national org and I often work in locations where my cell phone loses signal (even in 2011 we don't have signal everywhere) that and working events I am checking my phone all the time. It would be nice just to look at my wrist and not reaching into a pocket for my phone every few min.

I understand though. I have not worn a watch (except for camping and skiing) for almost 10 years now. That is why I'm after a new one. Mine is pretty beat.

I'm leaning to wards the luminox 0201 blackout. Anyone have one?

So far I have looked at:

5.11's - cool watches, always wondered about them since they came out
G-Shock's - I like them, but the ones I have tried on are a bit thick and look like they would snag easy
Suunto Core - Still want one of these, but I don't think I would use all the features enough since I already carry a Garmin 60CSx backpacking so I have compass, altimeter and other things covered.

Ive been wearing my Swiss Army Cavalry watch for the past 10 years and it has accompanied me on more outdoor trips than I can count. The silver on black makes it easy to read with a quick glance, and isnt too flashy.

I found a used Suunto Vector (foliage) for $85. It needs a new strap. That seems like a pretty good deal. I am having trouble comparing it to the Luminox 0201 Blackout though. How big of a watch is the Vector? I've tried on the core and its almost a little big for an everyday watch.

I used to go for the big multifunction digital watches, but recently I've been going more towards slim watches.

I have a few Skagen watches, all of them are super light (titanium) and very low profile. I never take them off, and I've only scratched one of them on some granite.

My big boy watch is an Omega, but I leave it at home when camping and non-business travel. For everything else I have a Victorinox and a black plastic job (dunno, casio?).

My Advizor is essentially the same as the Vector (The updated the Advizor's display and called it the Vector, they're the same watch). I don't have particularly big wrists and Ive found the Advizor to be plenty manageable for daily use. That said, the Advizor does feel bigger than the Core and the Core was significantly lighter than the Advizor is. And IMO there is no comparing the Suunto to the Luminox, the quality and usefulness of the Suunto far exceeds its competitors.

Once you go Suunto, you will never go back. They are far more accurate pieces than any other ABC watch out there. One of the best features of the Core is the Sunrise and Sunset times. That can be Very important when you are out in the woods. BTW I have had four Cores and currently down to two. I also have several other Suuntos which are also amazing.

Ok, update. I tried on the 0201 Blackout and it felt really "cheap". It was very plasticy feeling as opposed to the Suunto, which is plastic but feels more solid. I think I am going to go with a Vector, but I found a Core for $50 and have to justify the difference. Those who have tired them why is the core $50 better?

I'm currently rocking one one of these:
http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss328/alextmodeler/pu-pf3779_1.jpg
I've had it for a couple years now, and it repeated "takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'." I beat the snot out of my watches, and they usually only last me a year at the most, but this one has managed to hold on for quite a while. The crystal is scratched pretty bad, and several pins in the band keep trying to pop out, but thats nothing a bit of electrical tape cant fix. :D

And it never comes. Never.

Suunto makes 13 Core models... which one?

A watch is a chronograph and some are able to provide other data bits, but it's also about personal expression and style. The question beyond function is what makes you happy? The one you like best, that appeals to you at a gut level, is the the better one.

If my Vector wasn't so flippin' good (11 years now) I would get a Core All Black (SS014279010) in a nano-second (pun intended).

All of the different Core models have the same guts. They are essentially just covered differently. And, yes, the Core is Well worth the extra money over the Vector. Don't get me wrong though; the Vector is also an awesome piece. I am currently wearing one of my Vectors. I have four. The Core just has so many more features than the Vector. Spend the extra money. You also get a crystal face compared to the acrylic face of a Vector.

Those Cores are nice, but I would still take my Luminox I posted earlier in this thread.
I just do not have a need for anything other than to tell time, plus I do not like digital, I like analog hands.

This is my other watch I have not worn in close to three years.
It is very nice, but I like the Luminox for its ability to see it in total darkness.

There are a couple reasons for why I would go with the Core over the Vector. Depending on the model, the Core will come with a partial aluminum case, the Vector is all plastic. The Core also felt much lighter to me. One thing I don't like about my Advizor (aka Vector) is that the display is not nearly as clear as the Core. With my watch I have to be looking straight down to see the display properly, you can't look at it from any angle. That IMO is the biggest flaw of the Advizor/Vector. That said, the Vector is a time tested and reliable watch and I would not hesitate buying one again. I love mine and the issues I mentioned are very minor.

Citizen Nighthawk EcoDrive. Nice dial for night time and doesn't need batteries.

You better re-read the manual, I have the same watch, it does indeed have a battery that is charged by the sun collected by the face.

Depending on your source, some say the battery will never need replaced, some say it will, its about $60 when/if it comes time.

The replacement battery for the Citizen Skyhawk Eco-Drive JR3000-51F wrist watch has costs around $60 to purchase if you ever need one. Citizen claims that after 20 year the battery will only have lost about 20% of its capacity.

That being said, my watch dealer said he has indeed replaced one, but it was likely faulty to begin with.

You do not want the Vector series Suuntos. Our Suunto rep isn't even sure why they still offer those. The key differences between Vector and Core series watches is the navigation between modes. The Core series is "menu" driven. The fifth button selects modes. The two right buttons flanking the menu button make selections within the menus. The vector series is not menu driven. You have to sequence through modes as you would a traditional watch. Not nearly as easy to master.

The Core series is the number one series in the Suunto line as it relates to backcountry type watches. Great watches.

I also have a couple of G-Shock watches that I wear when I am getting really dirty. I am so impressed with how tough they are. I had a Highgear Summit for a couple years then got a Suunto Core about 6 months ago. Battery life in the Core seems the same as the Summit but the build quality is a lot better. I sent the Summit back within 3 months of purchase due to water infiltration. I also like the Cores face better.

I've worn Seiko analog dive watches for some time now. IME, they're not the best at keeping time. Tough in all climes, yes. Easy to read at night, yes. Classic good looks, yes. Always running fast....definitely.
-
I've switched over to a simple, digital Casio watch with second time zone (essential for me), stopwatch, countdown timer (essential for me) and compass. The compass is actually adequately accurate but I'm a traditionalist and find compass watches a novelty / only-in-an-emergency feature still.
-
I'm surprised all the high-brow watch owners (who missed your stated budget by a mile) haven't recommended a Sinn. Several of my lads have owned them.....pretty jazzy timepieces but a little over-the-top for my blood.

Ditto, but its doesn't have a passport....so it just stays in the US (in my safe) when I travel. A few years back I got worried with all the "nice watch" comments while on vacation.

BTW, I have a buddy who used to work for "the Peace Corp" who traveled with a handful of very nice Rolex replicas, they came in handy for negotiating his way out of sweaty scenarios in the middle east...

I'am a fan of Casio.

Had the previous one 24/7 to my wrist for 25 years. Change batteries every 3-4years.

I'm back with casio g-shock tough solar.

I think one of the secret for longevities is the 200 m deapth mark, since the cassind as to be sturdy.

Wirst band, that is an other story. Nothing i've tried realy lasted more than a year, so I'm now the velcro nylon band type.

I agree with the statement about the Submariner being an extension of his arm.

My Sub was a high school graduation present in 1975.

I have worn it everyday all over the world and in some dodgy places. Now with my parents gone I always have a pleasant reminder of them every time I look at the watch. It still is my primary watch but I do like wearing something different every so often.

In terms of surviving pure abuse Casio is high on my list.
I bought one of these in '83 for about $9.
http://www.casio.com/resource/images/xlarge/w59-1v_xlarge.jpg

I called the Naval Observatory and set it to within 1 second of the UNSO clock.
Unfortunately, within a month of buying it, it was in a tool box that caught on fire near the top of a building I was working on (a couple 100 feet up). It got hot enough to melt the band and for the LCD spread and turn the face black. Of course I thought it was trashed and tossed it off the building.
At the end of the day I happened to see it on the ground while walking to my car. If it hadn't been face up so I could read the face I'd have ignored it, but I could read the time and date. I picked it up and all the functions seemed to work so I put it on (the band was melted and distorted, but I could still fasten it.
About a year later I was still using it and checked it against the USNO clock again and found it to be within 10 seconds of the correct time.

I wore it for another 5 or 6 years until the crystal cracked when changing the battery. But it was getting hard to read anyway with all the weld spatter on it.

Definitely not a glamorous watch, or one for coffee table magazine photo shoots, but they do the job.

I sold off some of my watches, as I had acquired a few too many. I left myself with three. I have a dressier Seiko chronograph, and a cheap Fossil that I received as a gift from my father (so it has sentimental value) that dressed up well with a nice leather strap.

But for everyday wear, and activities, I like this:

Seems like I have a response similar to others. I have had the Luminox for 7 or 8 years and have beat it up pretty well. There are scratches on the glass and the numbers on the bezel are pretty much gone but it is still working. I have been thru about 5 batteries. Leather, cloth, and plastic bands don't hold up as well as good metal watch bands. This watch has the best indicators in the dark, good for taking pulse and respiration's in low light.

Just got a Timex Expedition Rugged Core watch. It's really light weight, and not too pricey, so I'm not cringing when it gets scuffed, etc.
- Andy
X2 - cost about $70 and is tough. If you smash it up, just toss it and get another.

I also have a bunch of diving watches that my wife keeps giving me - a Tag Huer and a couple Omega Sea Masters. The high priced watches are very good, I wear them when I have meetings, etc. ...but the bracelets are crap. Leather or rubber band is better.

I was issued this somewhere around 1999 or 2000.

I have only taken it off for a one month stint to replace the rubber watchband that finally gave way in 2009. It survived many countries and several engagements, but the crystal is still unmarked...the bezel, well...its a bit dinged up.
Love the tritium gas lights...so bright I have been able to use it as a low level flashlight in pitch black.
It still runs a few seconds fast per 24 hours, but most automatic watches do.

I wear the Luminox Evo Navy Seal Blackout Mens Watch 3051.BLACKOUT as my daily. I replaced the band with a standard 22mm NATO strap. As others have stated, the Luminox are super easy to see at night, and this one features purple and orange tritium tinting rather than the standard green. Looks pretty sharp overall. The quality is pretty good and since it's a composite case it's very light as well.

I've had a bunch of G-Shock watches thanks to my sister and brother-in-law working for Casio in the timepiece division. They make a good product between the standard G-Shocks and the Pathfinder series. I also have a Citizen Ecodrive field watch I wear on occasion. I got rid of my $500+ Suunto after it crapped the bed on me more than once (was issued to me when I was active duty).

I'm on this thread because I've been shopping for a digital. My Luminox is around 8-9 years old and is still "read the fine print at night" bright. I had to replace a broken clasp on it and the crystall is beat up and scratched, but if I'd replace it, it'd look 95% new. Also it holds time amazingly well, especially compared to my Seiko automatics.

I've been thinking of a Casio with an alarm

I have been wearing a $9.99 Walmart watch kayaking this spring. There is no brand name on it, but it says "water resistant to 30 Meters". I strap it on over my neoprene glove so I can easily see the time. It stays soaked for long periods of time. After six trips, it's still going strong. I new it would be abused, so I went cheap, but so far so good. I carry my blackberry in a waterproof box, but it is too much hassle for quick time checks between rapids.
