Iphone or I pad how to?

Can some one post a detailed explanation of how to set an I pad or I phone for nav what programs to by do you need an external gps antenna will it work from a mac ( it better) durability power issue mounting etc, this need to be as complete as possible Thanks in advance and if you would why is it better than say a dedicated stand alone hard wired gps with topo like a lowrance?

IPad Wifi model
IPad + GPS + Map software (topo/street): I use the Dual XGPS150 bluetooth gps and the Scenic Map West software. Ipad is mounted via a RAM locking ipad mount.

xgps150 doesn't like the wifi running when you connect so when I run it in the rig, I have to turn off the wifi first, then turn on bluetooth and connect to the gps. I then turn on the Dual app to check the gps status and wait for it to lock on. Once locked on, I turn on the Scenic Map software.
