-I hope Piaa and Hella introduce LED lighting
-Not sure if tour-a-tech will be there, but I would like to see some KLR stuff from them. They told me on facebook that KLR stuff was soon to be introduced.
-I can't wait to see pictures of the new AEV Jeep
What do you hope to see?

SEMA 2011 is upon us and dozens of ExPo members and vendors are descending upon Las Vegas. If we survive Halloween Monday night, we will post loads of images from our treks through the halls.
Here is a little teaser of our SEMA project prep for this year-

No photos available prior to the show, but this drawing shows an F350 outfitted as a fire fighting brush truck. The truck has a 10 inch lift by Superlift, 41 inch Interco IROC tires and a full exoskeleton roll cage. It's easy to see the ExPo potential in this sort of truck.
The Matchbox folks have made toy replicas of this vehicle. Stop by the Ford booth and get one free.

Dodge will show a custom version of the Dodge Durango SUV at its booth. (Remember, the 2011 Durango is built on a stretched Grand Cherokee platform). This vehicle's 22 inch rims and monster V8 make it an all weather street machine rather than a rockhopper.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z241/expeditioncampers/durangotowhook.jpg
Toyo Tire will show four custom vehicles including a Ford F150 Raptor and a Dodge Durango. Toyo is giving their custom Durango away. You don't have to attend the SEMA show to enter. Visit this website http://www.toyotires.com/sweepstakes if you can't make it to the SEMA booth.

The Icon Bronco will have its official debut at SEMA. This homage to the early Bronco will cost $150-200K, depending on options.

Icon makes more than 4x4 replicas. Look for the resto-mod Icon Derelict, a rusty 1952 Chevrolet Business Coupe body, resting on a modern frame with Chevy V8 and up-to-date running gear. Details and photos here

The Icon Bronco is beautiful. I personally don't think there is a real market for a $150k "toy" in today's economy. A $50/60k Hemi Wrangler...now yes, there is a market for that...AEV...

Garage? Check out e-conolight dot com for the garage or house... Way affordable... It's owned by the big name light companies, but they push no name stuff from the same factories... I use it all the time (I'm an electrician)
Vehicles? Affordable? no clue, but I keep looking... It's all still wayyyyyyy to much... LED is still up and coming. But will be the real deal soon.
Awesome pics of sema guys.
I second that equipts tents are extremely quality stuff, I drolled all over them at the hollister overland rally, I want to bolt one to the 4runner ASAP!

SEMA staff photographed show vehicles as they entered the convention center. Galleries of photos are displayed here, including categories for street trucks and SUV (including lots of ExPo-style vehicles), 90+ photos, and off-road road trucks, 50+ photos. You also can search for a particular manufacturer, i.e., Jeep.

Will the Brute be available with a turbo diesel? Also, any thoughts on having a door to access the bed from the back seat? Maybe 2 captain chairs in the back and then a door to get to the bed? Just a thought. Looks awesome!
Maybe portals under the Brute as well.

Will the Brute be available with a turbo diesel?
Just my THOUGHTS...AEV components/vehicles can be bought from the parts counter/sales dept at any Jeep dealership. -this includes financing.
I don't see them offering a diesel vehicle for that reason alone.

Will the Brute be available with a turbo diesel?
Nope, with pretty much 100% certainty. Big EPA no-no. Since Jeep hasnt offered a diesel motor in years and it cannot legally put an older diesel motor into a new frame. Not allowed by the EPA and a majority of states. If you have a TJ and can get your hands on a VM or the Merc motor, then, if youve got the ridiculous amount of coin to do the swap, its a possibility. There is the Merc/ Freightliner/ Sprinter motor but it depends on how that motor is classed. If its a MD or HD motor, that would be a no go too. I know the OJ 4 door JK is diesel powered but it also still runs with manufacturer plates, if Im not mistaken, giving it some leeway with the rules.

Its nobodies truck. Its the Raptor competitor that Mopar just released. Its all available over the counter. Everything Ive read about it so far says its not very good at anything. The mods work okay off road but kill you everywhere else. The Raptor is about the same price built and is better at everything apparently.

I believe that it is the Ram charger? That is supposed to be in a kit form (fenders f/r, suspension ect). Supposed to be the Dodge compition to the Raptor exept you have to put it together. I could be wrong though.

JT Grey Racing has prepared another Lexus LX570 for desert racing. An article and copyrighted photos of the truck at SEMA appear here
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/02/jt-grey-racing-lexus-lx-570-is-an-unlikely-desert-king/
Changes to the truck include removing all glass windows, filling in the rear window openings with metal plate, removing the tailgate and installing a spare tire carrier, lifting the suspension, adding extra-long coilover shocks, installing 37 inch tall tires, gutting the interior, adding racing seats and building a full roll cage.
JT Grey Racing and Lexus were last year's SCORE Stock Full Size champion, with four 1st place and one 2nd place finishes.

No, it looks to be true. When the runner up in the off road category are little, itty bitty fuel and water tanks that hold, what, a gallon max? its old news. There really isnt anything cool that Ive seen so far. No combination of stuff thats ground breaking or original. Wow, another overpriced Icon. Wow, a stretched out Wrangler. Wow, a Tacoma with a bumper, winch, a couple of surf boards and a shower. Wow, an 80 series with a snorkel. Wow, a long arm kit on a Jeep. Wow....
Only thing cool so far is that someone bothered to restore a Subaru XT (wonder whats powering it).

Vegas is defiantly loosing it's flare if house parties are the hit. Funny, most of the BNG urban definitions fit into the Vegas definition (I didn't know either, im only 30) don't feel old unless you are younger than me. What's the motor in the stretched 80? Probably the 4.7 2UZ-FE knowing those guys.

The setup with the mounting brackets and one can (they each hold 2.5 gallons) is ~$120. Each additional can is ~$65-$70. I say approximately because I'm going from memory. I liked the mounting system but would like to test it in some real world conditions to see how it holds up. Certainly another option for vehicles with limited interior space.

That pretty much sums up the show every year :). I usually find a handful of new products that catch my eye. In the lean years (early 2000s come to mind), I came home unenthused and not sure if I would go back the next year. I would probably rate this year's show in the top 5 that I've attended.
The positive thing that I came away with this year is that the show is growing in size again. The last few years with vast swaths of empty floor space and creatively displayed cars were depressing. This year had a more positive vibe and more people in the aisles again.

Nice to see this option.
I wrote Expedition One more than once and inquired in a thread of theirs over at fjcruiserforums site about their long/skinny cans and mount for the spare tire of the FJ Cruiser.
They never responded, so this looks like a good alternative.

I agree with Todd that at least things are growing and that helps us all

No, it looks to be true. When the runner up in the off road category are little, itty bitty fuel and water tanks that hold, what, a gallon max?
one on each wheel (x5) equals 1 Nato can...

Except that the cans are 2.5 gallons, not 1 gallon: http://daystarweb.com/productdetail.php?productID=1221. That would be 2.5 NATO cans if you mounted 5 of them.

OK, according to the URL above, it will fit a Toyota lug pattern for the spare tire.
I would like to pick up a green one for water.

They were stunning and are currently being produced by a restoration house in Germany. They have a modern AMG drivetrain.

There's always tons of useless swag handed out at the show every year but this year I inadvertently found something useful. We all have a zillion koozies from various sources from over the years and I declined this one (great company for fuel tank sending units, btw) until they said theirs were special! And special they are - two magnets attached to the backside (covered so it won't mar your paint) so you can have your truck hold your beverage if you desire. Static testing is complete and was successful. Dynamic testing TBD.

if you ask me, I believe this was the most impressive display of all of SEMA.
They take an older body and put a new powertrain. The level of quality and final result is what you would expect of German engineering - it is absolutely perfect.
I did not dare to ask the price...here's their website:

Here is another picture. I wonder what the bolt pattern is. It say any Jeep or Toyota, but jeep had two different patterns for TJ and JKs.

The Daystar fuel carrier has caught my interest but two concerns. First is 2.5 gallons is much..so..is it really worth it. Second I see no way to secure the lids of the cans so with it sticking out like that i see a problem with someone adding something to your water/fuel/etc why you are in getting supplies.
Also, anyone get one of the Matchbox trucks they were handing out they want to get rid of?

I believe that one is the Bestop Modular Rack System.
Sorry, no pictures of it but I did get some of the hard top with some acrylic panels installed on the same Jeep.

Except that the cans are 2.5 gallons, not 1 gallon: http://daystarweb.com/productdetail.php?productID=1221. That would be 2.5 NATO cans if you mounted 5 of them.
So, this begs the question of how would you mount 5 of them, how long are they going to be if you mount 5 of them and is the $100+ a piece vs. $40 a piece worth it? Im thinking not really. The bike market, maybe but there are already spare tanks for that. I dont see the point to these little things.

The whole thing was a Mopar show it seemed and there looked to be a lot of the same thing with different paint jobs. Kind of disappointing really.

one on each wheel (x5) equals 1 Nato can...

The first post I've quoted here is the one I was responding to. It would appear Flagster envisioned attaching one to each tire (spare+four tires on the ground). I was only correcting his math, because he was wrong on the capacity of the cans.

More about this one, photographed by GTABurnout:
http://www.desertstreetcars.com/pics/gtaburnout/SEMA2011/110511020.jpg
It appeared in the Optima Battery booth. It's a rock crawler with a rear mounted Chevy V8. The V8 powers a hydraulic pump that drives each wheel independently. The amount of power to each wheel is controlled by the driver. Independent suspension all around, extra long wheel travel, steering front and rear, immaculate welding: This is a truly unique vehicle. I can't find any information about who the builder is.

Looks like driving will be a handful because you have to set the power level to each wheel, and manage front and rear steering.

Yes, I have been in contact with them and exchanging emails.

Sweet! I had one in red, my first Subaru. Air ride and you could put in 4wd at any speed with the push of a button. If you parked it on an uneven surface it would try to level itself. The suspension had a push button high and low position. It would lower itself after you got it up to 55 if I remember.

The rack is a Bestop unit. They currently only offer it for a 2 door JK, but with some slight mods I made it fit the 4 door. The roof panels are from a new company called "Jeetops" out of Wisconsin.

Your threads are stripped......at least the first few on the female part and male threads look a little messed up but, salvageable. A trip to the bow shop may cost less than a 30-40.00 tap and die set unless you buy only the correct size tap and die from a hardware, tool or home store. Sears and automotive stores carry those as well.

shame the Action Camper didn't make it to SEMA as I think it would have really made an impression.
It really puts us into play with alot of what you see in Europe, very cool stuff there
I agree with Todd that at least things are growing and that helps us all
I agree with many of you guys who wrote about this. We just recently made a Website for all US Overlanders. http://www.actioncamper.info. Here you'll find the newest pictures, 360x180 interior panoramas, etc.. Now I'm back to Austria, to get production ready. My friends from AT Overland will answer all questions in the future. Of course I'll allways answer design related questions.
.
Panoramas: they can be controlled individually with the mouse; the buttons at the bottom enlarge when the mouse arrow approaches; by holding down the left mouse button and moving down an 360x180 can be turned down ; the mouse wheel is a zoom wheel; depending on the connection speed they may take a while to load; please be patient!
.
Why didn't we make it to SEMA on time? The container ship had bad weather in the panama canal = 4 extra days; it arrived in Long Beach Friday night, until the container got to the deliverers warehouse it was almost Saturday noon; the union doesn't allow to move things until Monday morning at 8:00; we where lucky to get a VIP spot at the entrance where the check-in is on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.; mission impossible. Sorry! I hope for next year.....

I think it's really odd that a forum about in progress travel and a subset of that about a one week vehicle that is over get it's own sticky. Is it just me or this out whack?
There are trips on here that get less views then then the 300th article on someone changing the wheels and tires on their Tacoma. The only real way to get visits and replies up on a trip report is to mention guns.
Just something I noticed......

I think its funny that it has portal axles together with the 6 foot tall tires - I guess it really needed the extra couple of inches of clearance!
I also hadn't thought about how it steers - its rear steering only - The front axle is a fixed (rear) alxe as there is no clearance for the tires. That's got to be really odd driving it.
I suppose it might work in CO but I wouldn't even try it here in the Pacific NW with all the trees to drive around.
