We did this trip in 2005 and it was a blast. Three days in the mountains East of Superior doing some rock climbing and a fun 3 rated trail.
The schedule is very relaxed, but follows this general theme:
Friday 5/19: Drive into camp at Lower Devils Canyon at around Noon. Those who need to come later can get directions. One of my absolute favorite campsites looking over Devils Canyon. Loads of climbing routes in the area. Stuff for beginner on up to multi pitch routes. We will arrive in camp with enough time to get a few climbs in and set-up some ropes.
Note: Arriving- Take US60 East out of Phoenix, past Superior and through the tunnel. Just after the tunnel is Oak Flats Campground.
Waypoints (WGS84):
1. US60 Turn-off: N33 18.775 W111 02.942
2. 1:00 PM Meeting Location: N33 18.572 W111 03.023 (just a dirt area west of the RV campground)
3. Leave Magma Mine Road: N33 17.875 W111 03.601
4. Top of climb, before switchbacks: N33 16.742 W111 02.726
5. Windmill: N33 16.487 W111 02.403 (Note: make sure to bare left at the Y)
6. Camp: N33 16.582 W111 01.895 Camp is at the Lower Devils Canyon overlook
There will be two established meeting times:
1:00 PM- I will be at the meeting location, and leave at 1:15 sharp. Please advise if you intend to show-up at this time.
6:30 PM- Anyone that has a full work day should plan to meet at this time and travel in together. Coordinate in the thread.
Group Dinner-
I will do the Tequila tomatoes again this trip. If someone else wants to do another side, that would be great. Everyone can bring their own meat and grill (I will bring the grill)
Saturday 5/20: Leave camp for the days 4wd adventure on a challenging trail. Can be done in a high clearance stock SUV if all bypass' are taken. Lots of optional play areas. The goal is to be back in camp for a late lunch and more climbing! Those who dont climb can enjoy the numerous hiking options or take a nap in a chair. Just enjoy the afternoon.
Sunday 5/21: Lazy morning of sleeping in or climbing. Leave around lunch for US 60.

Scott,
Any word on whether or not this truly is the last year to make this trip? Previous threads had discussed this area being in danger of closure. If that is the case, I may have to give this some serious thought.

There is a very good chance that this will be the last year of access.
Friends of Queen Creek have fought valiantly to preserve access to this area:

I cannot underestimate the beauty of this campsite and climbing area. It might also be fun to have two adventure options. The 4wd option on the trail system and a trekking option into Devils Canyon.

Man, I have been itching to get back out west again.
That looks like SUCH an awesome outing. I remember browsing thru some of those pics a few weeks ago and daydreaming about taking that trip. I would love to go, but seeing as how the date is less than a month after my wife's due date, and we will be smack in the middle of adjusting to parenthood, I won't make this one...
Here is hoping that the lands stay public so you can do it again next year. Heck, here is hoping that the lands stay public because it is the right thing to happen! If things work out so that it is possible to do it next year, then I may just have to join in the fun...
Scott,
This sounds awesome! Can I be a tentative for ths trip? I'd also like to know if you've got a GPS capture for the camp area? I might try to make a shorter one night trip out there prior to this scheduled weekend.

You've probably been within 1/4 mile of the campsite Bman. It's just off of "hackberry creek".....down at the cattle pond by the windmill, you normally make a right and go up the hill (towards powerline)....well, don't make that right. Just continue strait on for another 1/4 mile or so, the trail will dead end into a great campsite.
I'd like to make it again this year, but I don't think it will happen. My schedule doesn't allow much of a social life until late in the year.

Ok, it looks like the trip is full :rappel:
Because of the interest, I think we should have a trekking group and a trail group for Saturday. The trek will be into Devils Canyon, so rope and climbing skills are required.
The trail group will run the Hackberry Loop trail. Rock protection recommended, but not required. Limited slip or better in the rear diff recommended, but not required.
I am considering doing a group dinner on Friday night again. I will let everyone know in the next week or two.

Hackberry isnt too difficult, your 80 will have no problem. There are a few optional lines that present more of a challenge, and it also depends which way you run the loop(s).
Here is a trip report from two consecutive weekend runs on Hackberry we did:

We will have loads of climbing gear, but everyone that wants to climb should have a minimum of a harness and locking carabiner.

No sweat Scott, we can help you out if you'd like.
If you want, I can bring a portable BBQ hibachi thingy with several cans of propane and the usual grilling fare (burgers, hotlinks, buns, condiments, etc...) and of course, one bag of the "Top Secret, Ultra Fancy, Imported All The Way From Boston" Sirloin Tips! :clapsmile
I dont have enough for all, but am willing to share what i have!
I am also willing to share cooking duties, but, if you MUST cook for the group, i wont complain! :hehe:
Can we see a show of hands for volunteers for dish cleaning duties? :hehe:
I guess we need a stove too huh? I have one (somewhat big and bulky) i can bring if its needed, if someone else has it covered, let me know!

Trekking and Climbing:
The hike into Devils Canyon is "technical" and will require a few rappels. :rappel:
Anyone that wishes to do the trek needs a harness, descending device, carabiner(s), and a personal anchor like a sling or two. Anyone need help in this department? I'm glad to do so.
Also, explorers ye be warned: Poison ivy is extensive in the canyon. From what I read, there are some pools at the end, though. Bring a suit or a harebrained level of adventure and go naked.
It could very well be a full-day program because the going is slow - and it's only 2 miles to the pools :). I totally suggest sporting some Keens (or something similar) on your feet. Hiking boots probably won't be the best choice because we'll have some water to slosh through. We'll have to do some class-5 climbing to get out, but nothing extraordinarily difficult. Pack enough water and food for the day, too. My apologies if this info is too basic.
I'll have several ropes as well as all the gear required to set up anchors. We can set up several mild to moderate top rope routes near the campsite, too.
Here's to life,
Mark

Will there be routes for my level? If not, no biggie, just curious.

There are several routes in the 5.5 to 5.8 neighborhood. On the canyoneering trek, we'll just have to be able to scramble back up the rappels...they say these are no more difficult than 5.0. But if we're satisfied at the first of several pools, it's a short rap anyway.
Cheers,

How about the personal anchor - is it something I should get?

Ha! I have no clue what 5.5 and 5.8 mean. I am guessing the higher the # the harder the climb? Or is it like golf? :D

Excellent. Well, as far as the canyon is concerned we aren't doing anything more than what we did last fall. Except the water will be far more pleasant. New gear is unnecessary - I have an assortment of carabiners and rappelling devices that I'm happy to loan out. But I won't stand in the way of good money spent on cool gear. :)
If you want to participate in the top roped climbing near the campsite, climbing shoes are a good idea.

Baja, Boston (hey...look at those place names....)
Sorry about that. The only pertinent thing you should have of your own is the harness. While everyone will need the biner and sling/anchor for the trek, it ain't necessary to purchase. I can supply this stuff to a degree - I have 5 or 6 rapping devices and a pile of slings and anchors. But I know some people like to just have their own goods and not worry about it. So, here is the classic ATC style belay/rap device (the official MarkDStephens.com recommendation):
http://images.rei.com/media/471034Prd.jpg
Less than $20 at REI (http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=979&parent_category_rn=4500695&vcat=searchrefine). For a trip like this, don't bother with something like the Gri-Gri or a "Reverso." You can also use a figure-eight style belay/rap device, and that looks like this:
http://a1072.g.akamai.net/f/1072/2062/1d/gallery.rei.com/media/471098Prd.jpg.
What ever suits your pleasure. :) I have a few of each kind.
An anchor would just be a sling - and they come in four billion lengths, widths, materials and so forth. Again, I've more of these than I can use in my lifetime. They look like this:
http://a1072.g.akamai.net/f/1072/2062/1d/gallery.rei.com/media/709160_350Prd.jpg
and run between $5 and $20 depending. A whole wide world at REI (http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?storeId=8000&crumb=Original+Search%5E%26link%3D1%26cat%3D450008 1%252C4500089%26query%3D*%7ECords%2C+Slings+and+We bbing%5E%26cat%3D4500089&link=1&cat=4500089&query=*&text=1&group=4&vcat=REI_SSHP_CLIMBING_TOC:N)
Let's see if I can say this more accurately: You'll need your own harness for sure, and I'll have everything else. If you want to purchase your own stuff, check out the items above.
And WOW! I'm stoked so many of you are doing the canyon. I thought the BajaTaco machine would be driving the trail. :ylsmoke:

Well, no amount of stripes or cool colors will get you up the rock any better, so you may as well be comfy. :xxrotflma. Also, the Dripping Springs area... here is a press release (http://kyl.senate.gov/record.cfm?id=253248) on it. Okay, went over to REI tonight and used the anniversery coupon on some climbing shoes. We'll see how I did after this trip:rappel:
Thanks again for the advice!
BTW, they were quite a bit more than $100 because I took too long and gave my wife too much time to find stuff in the store. She walked out with a much bigger bad than mine:p

I am planning on running the trails. I have never been in the area though so we will be relying on my topos of the area. i need to get to the map store and pick up the right ones. Chris do you have any of the quad names for the area so I get the right maps? Maybe some waypoint coords along the way would even do for me to get the right maps.
I have the CSC Sonic meet on Friday night and haven't yet decided if I will be heading out directly from there (late friday night) or just heading out on early Sat AM (probably do this) so I'm hoping to get some turn off info from one of you that's been out there more than once so that I can meet up with the group w/o major hassles for anyone.
The 60 WILL NOT be ready so I'll be ground tenting it with the 40.

BMAN, will you be using a GPS? If so, what kind? I might be able to send you some data.
The "Superior (AZ)" topo quad should cover it.

I can provide a GPS, waypoints and a trail book for the trail. It is a really fun loop, which will challenge the stockers and still allow for some optional challenges to the better built trucks.

Really looking forward to the weekend, and this little adventure.
Does anyone have a computer projector available? That would be very cool to have for the slide show.
Prolly an etrex legend but I have no way of DL-ing to it. I got the waypoints for the campground from the #1 post so I'll be good to go for getting to the site. From there I can figur ethe rest out before Saturday AM.

Never camped in weather this hot, should be interesting! If it really is going to be that hot, the plan to sleep in my rig might be altered due to the fridge running all night! :D

That would probably be me, but I said "80's", not around 80 :) - so that could be like... 89.5 and still be "eighties" :p
Yea, you can leave the down at home. But still might get into the high 50's to low 60's in the middle of the night. I think the closest forecast is Superior, and we will be a little higher in elevation - about 3,500 feet or so.

I was out last weekend, not in lower devils, but it was hot everywhere.
I have been thinking of places around there with water...There are a few ponds but they all serve as watering holes for cows and aren't the kind of thing you want to jump into. There may be water at the bottom of the canyon. Lets hope. I don't plan on doing much climbing though.

This is going to be a fun weekend!
Alright fellas I got all the waypoints and whatnot figured out. Seems to me that the trail in to camp should be easy enough to navigate with what I have so... the plan for me is to be rolling into camp relatively early on Saturday AM, say 7:30 or so. Looking at the topo maps it looks like there is a loop trail into Devils canyon that I'd like to run Saturday morning. Anyone who is planning on the "run" for Saturday pipe up so I have an idea of how many rigs we'll have. That is unless Scotty or Chris have a better idea for a trail. I've never been in the area so I have no real idea of what the loop actually looks like along the lines of dificulty but I am assuming it is passable by the markings on the topo maps.

Maybe a dawn climb or something before you show and then head out to the trails?

I have never been that route, but it could be fun. I always continue south at 6 and proceed to N33 14.917 W111 02.544 and turn west. Then you fork back north again around N33 14.807 W111 02.963, which will bring you back to the windmill. :rappel:

Yeah, the schedule is VERY flexible this weekend. Climb if you want, trek if you want, 4wheel if you want, or even say to hell with it all and take a nap.
We will have slide shows at night, and maybe a DVD or two also.

It's alright... I like Google earth too. This one is nice for creating maps with points of refference. The problem is that you can only put 10 points on any given map. The good thing is that I can bookmark any map I make and use it at a later date for posting up as a link like I did here.
Unfortunately this program does NOT have lat/long coords built in. I use USA Photomaps for mapping out my trips and pulling coords then just get it close with LiveLocal for posting on the net. Kinda a pain to use 2 programs but I've become pretty efficient at it.
USA Photomaps kicks *** because you can switch back and forth between BW pics and USGS topos at any time. The long term plan is to Run USAPM on my laptop with a GPS rec'vr hooked in to live track my progress directly over the BW images and Topos both.

Sounds like that's exactly what I'm doing with OziExplorer. I also can switch to the NASA sat pics and have the 100K, 250K topos also. Sure is fun AND comes in handy when looking for trails. Has helped us on the Nevada Trophy and many other trips.

My intention has always been to use Ozi for my laptop but since I found usa photomaps (freeware) I've been kinda favoring it. The one thing that Ozi has thet USAPM doesn't have is the night screen option. I haven't yet set up my laptop for either at this point so the setup is still in limbo but as of right now I'm planning the USAPM route.

Wow, they must have added a lot of stuff to the program. When I looked at it the last time there was no comparision in terms of features. However, if it does all the things you are looking for than the price is a pretty good argument!
I guess my statement was misleading. I haven't truely "used" either program yet in the field. So it is not fair of me to make a comparison statement like that. What I meant was that from what little time i have been able to spend with Ozi compared to the long hours I "have" spent with USAPM, one of the cool features that USAPM is lacking, is the red nightscreen. As a freeware USAPM is a powerful tool. I may however be persuaded to buy a full version of Ozi after getting some field time with the program.
Does that make sense?

BMAN, I finally had a chance to take a look at this. I'm not too sure about the part of your loop between 6, 7, 8 & 9. I think this is actually in Devil's canyon and some of the side canyons. And I don't think there are any driveable trails down in there (?) I haven't been down in there yet myself, so not sure.
