I am wanting to buy some wool pants. I have found Filson brand carries the whipcord and Mackinaw. Can anyone comment on either styles. I live in Louisiana so super heavy may not be needed, but is there really any differant in the two styles in the real world. Or any other brands that I should look at?

You might want to check out the M1951 wool field trousers. Depending on size they can, in some cases, be found in as new condition. Also there are a number of surplus wool pants from other countries on the market. I also think L. L. Bean has both dress and outdoor wool pants.
You wouldn't be near Fort Polk?

The Filson Mac is very very warm and thick. The whipcord is much lighter weight. Don't own a pair of whipcords but would like to. hope this helps?

Almost all of the surplus wool pants are sized 34 in the waist or smaller. They would have fit me in high schooll 35 years ago.

I have several pieces from Ibex. Kinda pricey but super well made and will last forever. Plus its NOT itchy!

I checked out the Ibex. On line the styling looks odd. They are priced like the Filson. I want a more traditional style for casual wear as well as outdoor sports.

Having sold Filson clothing when I lived in Alaska in the 70s I can tell you that the clothing will hold up, as I have some items that I have outgrown but have nothing from them that I have worn out. With your location I think a pair of their wipcord pants will serve you well the mack's I think wouldbe to warm. While Ibex is good I don't think any of their pants could hold up to the wear and tear that Filson can handle.

Here are a few other brands I can think of offhand that carry wool pants:
First Lite
Stormy Kromer
Johnson Woolen Mills
Bemidji Woolen Mills
Woolrich
L.L. Bean
Cabelas

Codet sell some good wool pants. The most important piece in this equation is your long underwear. I can wear a wool shirt, Carhartt pants with no trouble down to below zero with no trouble with a good set of wool long johns like ones from Icebreaker. Proper layering is the most important thing to do when outdoors year around.

I'm also a fan of wool long johns. I know if I have them on then any kind of cold weather will not be an issue. As Far as Filson goes... Buy it once and keep it forever. A 5 year old wallet I bought from them was just replaced for free (Lifetime Warrenty) but the rest of the stuff I use from them is still as good as new.

I went with Filson Mackinaw bib and a pair of whipcord. Both in green with a green merino wool cuff cap. I found them cheapest at Montana Woolen. They have been on my bucket list sinceI read about them in Outdoor Life 40 years ago. At 52, November 30. I decided that I was not getting any younger. I just hope that my wife understands. Thank for all the input. Stay tuned, I may have some like new Filson for sale if the wife diagrees with my bucket list.

Capt.Eddie, You will love your filson gear. I have those bibs and like I said they are very warm and I wish it got cold enough to wear them more up here! The whipcords look like the will wear forever. I am just starting to wear out my filson wool long johns. They are getting tatterd after 12 years but will be worn to work tomorrow. Enjoy and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I got the Filsons in last night. I wear 36 inch waist in everything I wear. except gear I know I will wear longjohns with. I ordered 38 inch in both the Whipcord and the Mackinaw bibs. With out longjohns on the Whipocord were large in the waist. Just right for what I bought them for. Now the bad news. The Mackinaw bibs were quite a bit smaller then the Whipcords. It was extremely small. It was all I could do to suck in enough to button the bibs. I do not know if they are sized wrong or sized in a different way then pants. On Monday I will call back to Montana Woolen to see what I have to do to correct the sizing differants.

I still have 2 pairs of Swedish Armed Forces Wool Pants that are dated 1940 and 1942. I use them every year for hunting, winter camping and the odd dogsled trip.Wool pants rule in cold weather. Get your sizing issues sorted out and enjoy them. I have enjoyed mine for the last 10 years. Some poor recruit enjoyed them in the forties.:coffee:

I got my bibs back. I had to go up to 44 inch. I wear the Whip cord all the time. Wife even lets me wear them to church. After I wear any of my wool, I hang it outside on the porch . So far no odors.
