Nice program, and free:

Good for route planning and evaluating terrain conditions. Also helpful for validating if topo route is still open.

I got a Magellan Meridian Platinum in early summer and Bajataco clued me in to USAPhotoMaps. This is truly a great program.

I've used it for wayfinding, route planning, even in-the-field orientation. As a civil engineer, I've found it very handy for work related tasks as well.

Be sure to check out TerreFetcher (http://www.starrsoft.com/freeware/TerraFetcher/) as well. This program supplements USAPhotoMaps quite nicely. You can set up a closed loop route and TerraFetcher will retrieve all mapdata within that area. This was handy for my summer trip to California. I created a closed loop encompassing southern and central California and let TerraFetcher do the work.

Thanks for pointing everyone to USAPhotoMaps Scott... I need to be more proactive about sharing such info.

Regards,
Joel

has anybody been using this program and have any good tips?

I can't figure out how to get rid of downloaded maps that I don't want or how to save them to a disk.:(
