View Full Version : Today's commute

I’m driving home from my 9-5 today, in the rush-hour clog, and I saw a rig with an interesting swing-away tire carrier. Had a vertical hi-lift mount and a ladder for roof access built into it. Pretty cool.

So I start wondering about the vehicle. Looks like maybe an ‘80’s ‘Cruiser? Lotsa lift. Serious tires.

I get closer and sure enough, it’s a 60 series. I always did like those trucks.

Hm, that’s an unusual license plate. Maybe as the traffic crawls along I’ll get close enough to read it.

Venezuela! Cool!

I pass by in the other lane, checkin’ out the truck. That sure is a nice looking ‘Cruiser. Like the dark green paint.

What’s that badge on the fender? TurboDiesel! Color me green.

Cool-looking snorkel. Bet it's seen some use.

I slow down to get back beside the guy and give a little honk and a thumbs-up.

Guy gives me a little nod, as if to say, “Yeah, that’s right, I’m living the life you’ve been dreaming of.”

Which is . . . stuck in traffic like you but in a seriously sweet rig?

I approve of "Today's Commute" being in the In Progress Expeditions section. Nice touch.

Ahhhhhhh................you must be around Austin, TX? That rig belonged to Henry C. It now belongs to a guy named Dave. Sweet truck, yeah I was one of the first to drive it with the Cummins ;)

You're not telling me it didn't just come up from Venezuela, are you? That would seriously screw up my fantasy.

I believe you crossed paths with davegonz, a member here who bought "Princess" from 60seriesguy aka HenryC.

Crap.

Yes, it's a nice rig.

Crap.

I'd envisioned it mid-way through some around-the-world expedition, stoping in all the exotic places.

Crap.

What's he doing with Venezuela plates? (besides screwing with my imagination)

This is a very funny thread! Small world, aint it?

Crap.

I feel like I've been 'had' by a guy who was just on his commute.

Crap.

Sorry to burst your bubble. (hoping all participants of the next Texas M&G adorn Venezuelan plates) :sombrero:

If it's any consolation Henry and "Princess" are both from Venezuela. :safari-rig:

That helps a little. And it certainly is a nice rig.

But, ... crap.

By the way, tell Dave if I see him again I'm gonna...

...shake his hand, slap him on the back, and ask if I can borrow the keys!

Cliff notes for Lynn:

"Princess" is a dark green FJ60 runing the streets of Austin,Texas.
60seriesguy AKA HenryC is from Venezuela and brought Princess to the US with him.
60seriesguy sold said FJ60 to davegonz who we assume you saw on your commute today.
Engels keep the beer cold.

We clear now?! :D ;)

saw this on today's commute ... I blushed. Although, I guess the British SAS did use pink Rovers at one time so maybe a new expedition portal color is in the works.

Be careful. It might belong to someone on the board...

Mary Kay must be upgrading. When my wife sold, they were giving away Pontiac Vibes.

FWIW, the Princess (4BTJ60) that you saw on your commute is in this forum. You can see it under the Land Cruiser section. I believe the thread is called "Cruiser pics from Expo Members".

It is a very cool truck and has inspired many people to build their trucks like it.

How could I have missed this post...Too damn funny.

Lynn, what are you driving? I'll keep an eye out for you on my way to work (NE Austin, Applied Materials).

Man, I don't get those looks in mine :(

But then again, I don't sit in traffic 20 miles each way. Fortunately, I am 5 miles and in neighborhoods pretty much.

Lynn, just so you know, there are 2 Proffitts rigs in Austin. And, we just met a chap at the local meeting Tuesday who is gonna drop a 4BT into his 91 80 next month.

There are actually a lot of diesel cruisers in Austin. I know of only one in Dallas, and none in Houston. Not saying I know all, but diesel cruisers kinda "find" each other, if you will.

You had to revive this thread, didn't you!

Actually, I think I spotted you again a few months ago, in a neighborhood somewhere south of Anderson Mill road around Spicewood??

And, to save face, I WILL NOT be admitting to what I drive. I'm just a WWW Wheeler, but have plans. Big plans.

Ha..come on man. Let it out.

I live in Anderson Mill Estates off of Anderson Mill. Jason (Arcetryx) lives off of Spicewood..so you probably saw me coming from his 'hood.

We really need to set up a meet-and-greet night for all of the CENTEX people on Expo.
