I just picked up this book (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/mappinghks/) recently & started reading it a few days ago. Pretty interesting read so far (if you're a GPS/GIS nerd like me). Although I think I need to now learn Perl in order to implement some of this stuff myself. What's interesting is that most of what you read about in the book can be seen & downloaded from their website (http://mappinghacks.com/). I'll use this thread to post up anything I learn that might be relevant to vehicle-based exploration that hasn't been discussed thoroughly in other threads...
