We just returned from a long trip, mostly road driving, and after spending way too much $$$ on gas. I am curious to see what everyone is getting for gas mileage. I know 80s are not known or purchased for their gas sipping abilities, so that doesn't need to be discussed. But I am curious to see what everyone is getting on average.
Please also add if you have a rack or Roof-top tent.
Thanks.
So...I will start.
With tent I am now getting about 10-11 mpg.

I've found that if you drive the 80 like it's carbureted; drive it with the throttle position no further than to reach your desired speed and then ease off slowly and incrementally just to maintain speed, you can do almost 5+mpg difference. I know someone will tell me that's crazy-talk and the ECU with injection should be able to make that moot. Alas I still find the carb-style driving does better on the 1FZ-FE.
Okay, so I range wildly between 10 and 16 mpg, with rooftent.

'92FJ80 on 33's with stock gears. I run a basket on the roof, quite often havea canoe or kayak on there too.
I seem to get around`12mpg if I'm taking it easy going no more then 60mph on the highway. I drive similar to what Scott is saying and use very gradual throttle inputs. In a headwind, traveling above 60 or 65mph my mileage drops below 10. My worst recorded yet was 7mpg driving freeway in a strong headwind in eastern Montana. Most around town driving I get about 9-10mpg. The other interstingthing that I've noticed is that the canoe or a loaded roof basket, or even towing my boat(small boat 15 footer) makes no noticeable difference in my mileage as long as I stay under 60mph.

...as long as I stay under 60mph.
Interesting anectode: took an old-school Sunday drive (literally) to see some sights for a day in the 80, speed really low between maybe 20 and 45 maximum on some back roads, a few short stops, but just a real mild drive. 20-21 mpg. This was a few years ago before the rooftent.
Drove to Steamboat `normally' that next weekend and got 12-13.
Looks like the roots of the Cruiser are quite true in that it's not at home on the highway, rather the back roads and slow speeds.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I have/am considering downsizing to 265/75's vs my 285/75's which I know would help with the mpg.
And I totally agree with the driving speed...in Baja, where speed limits are about 50 mph, I was getting 16-17 with a rack (no tent).

No roof top tent, no roof basket, and 285s.
I usually try to drive like there's an egg between my foot and the pedal. I typically get 12-14 around town, 14-17 on the highways.

Between 10-13 mpg. with a roof top tent and a gas station up top :)
On the freeway i don't ever break 63mph.
I've been playing around going with 285's also.

What type of mileage do 80 owners get with a diesel motor? I think that Toyota fitted the 3B engine to this model. I'm toying with the idea of buying an 80 for my personal use and doing a diesel conversion

I'm not aware of any 3B going into an 80 from the factory (due in part to mfg years) although I know one person in particular is considering that exact swap. More likely the 1HZ and 1HDT engines?

Yeah Martyn, i'm pretty sure Scott is right. Your probably thinking of the engines he mentioned in a 81 series.

Yes Scott is correct the 1HZ and 1HD 4.2 Liter I-6 went into the series 80 Land Cruisers from 1994-1997 in Australia, possibly Canada??

13.25 mpg... With a super charger, bored 40 over, 315's, 4.88's, roof rack w/ Hella 4000's.
With me in the seat not loaded for a trip my 80 weighs 6250...

35's, 4.88's, eezi awn 1600, loaded for camping or not
10.5 - 13mpg
And I drive really light footed and keep the speed down and I may see a 1-2 mpg increase if I'm lucky.

Partly copied from a similar thread on IH8MUD:
Vehicle:
1996 FZJ80
Mods:
ARB Front
Kaymar Tyre Jockey
OME 3" Heavies
285/75/16 BFG AT/KOs on OEM alloys
Average mpg:
12.5-13.5 mpg, 95% freeway (65-70 mph)
If I drive ~55mph, consciously avoiding rapid acceleration, I get closer to 15-16 mpg.
Notes:
When I tow my 2,300 lb. tent trailer, I get 12.5 mpg, because I'm doing 50-55 mph the whole time, and the savings from reduced speed is offset by the towing weight, so I literally get the same mileage towing as I do when I'm commuting.
Roof tent brings me down to ~10-11 mpg @65 mph highway conditions.
In conclusion: I need a Tercel.

Loaded to the gills (nearly 7K) RRT 35's 4:88's 12.5 MPG drive under 50 MPH and I can get up to 14.5 MPG
Unloaded seems to make no difference, even with or without RTT average 12.5-14.5 MPG
Off highway Approx.. 9-10 MPG
On the Alaska Cruiser Trek 4 MPG :Wow1: (as did three other 80's on that trip, due to high RPM low range and deep mud)
I buy all my gas/oil and 80 parts with American Express at least I can get points and flyer miles out of the deal :wings:
Unless you can increase the MPG X 2 - it hardly seems worth trying to make a difference

Well...........I am almost there. I have a 91 FJ80 and I average 22-23 mpg. That is a combination of city/highway driving with speeds up to 80 mph. Off road does not seem to matter nor if I am loaded or not. I have not mounted the RTT yet so not sure how that would affect it. I have seen as low as 19mpg but that was loaded and I was flying up some mountain passes. Here are my specs:
1991 FJ80
-4" Slee lift
-35" AT tires
-ARB bull bar
-Kaymar rear bumper
Ooops, almost forgot to mention that I have a Cummins 4BT turbo diesel in it? :wings:
It's after market intercooled and the injection pump is at factory settings.

Loaded to the hilt with RTT and 3 occupants i usually get around 12-16mpg

Hey Martyn
This has been discussed on MUD a ton and almost everyone that does it agrees that the MPG difference isnt even close to making up the cost of the swap.
Most report less then 19-22mpg with the diesal swap (various models)

1995 FZJ80, 285 MTRs, stock gears, 2.5" OME, no roof rack, but rear drawers, gear, front slee bumper and winch, etc, 90K miles.
I'm averaging about 12-13 with mostly highway driving. With more city driving I see closer to 10-11.
The highest I've seen is about 16 mpg when perfectly stock...on the way home, driving back down from up in the mountains..so it was mostly downhill.
I don't think I've seen higher than 13 since the mods started, even with mostly highway driving.

92 Fj80: 3FE, 31" BFG ATs, OME, Bull Bar. no rack or RTT = 10 mpg in town, 12-13 on the Highway, depending on the speed, terrain and headwind.

11-12 MPG in town and I have a heavy foot in town. Tucson sits above 2000' elevation if that makes any difference.
14-15 MPG freeway and I don't usually go much above 70 MPH
Running 34.6" Muds on steel rims and diffs regeared to 4.88. custom 2-1/2 hi flow exhaust and head milled down a hair for more compression. Runs on premium most of the time, sometimes I use mid-grade. Timing turned up to 7* BTDC. Nothing on the roof. Fully armored.

Did you correct your speed when you went up a tire size? Bigger tires make your speedo and odometer run slow.

If this is correct for tire size MPG you guys are scaring the crap out of me.
I was wanting to replace a 454 powered suburban with a 80 as a DD for my wife. I would want to put some mild lift and a little bigger tires.
Some of you guys are reporting MPG with loads worse then my 454 Burb is getting pulling a 4Runner on a trailer (about 5500lb on the hitch) at 65mph with the AC on (10.5). Now that’s all it ever gets as long as you stay under 70mph. If you guys cant manage but 12-14 around town its not a lot better then what I get with the pig.
Maybe I should just buy the cheapest highest mile 80 I can find and plan to shove a 4b in it. There are a couple around me around $3k with clean bodies.

My #'s are corrected for larger tires and gears. I used GPS to verify. After the re-gear, my speedo/odo are 8.5% fast. So, yes, these things get crappy mileage.

I just got back from a trip up north (1500 miles)
Stock 97 with 170K, minus 2nd and 3rd row seats and seat belts, minus subwoofer, but with a medium load that I think puts me back in the stock weight category. I'm running Michelin Cross Country 275/70/16 which I believe is the same size as stock, and I measured them at 31.4". When new they were probably over 32".
On the highway getting up there I averaged 16 mpg with the AC on. On the way back I averaged almost 20 (no AC) until I hit the Grapevine. After the Grapevine, I averaged 18. Both times there was a good cross wind.
For the trip which included city driving, dirt roads, mountain passes, I averaged about 15. Not too bad. But my 80 runs real good. It's real smooth and quiet. And unless the shocks were replaced at some point, my stock ride is comfy, stiff, and feels pretty new.
I also noticed that I'm only getting 18.5 gallons or so per fill up. I usually get about 170 miles until the halfway point on the gauge. When I'm all highway I get almost 200 and sometimes even better. For a full tank, when I'm on E (which apparently means I have around 6.5 gallons in reserve) I get somewhere around 340 all highway and around 300 mixed.
These are just rough figures and estimates and they were derived using numbers from the gas station (gallons) and the trip meter (miles).
EDIT: highway speeds are usually around 70-75.

After the 2.5" ome suspension, and ARB Half roof rack i got 13 miles per gallon at an average speed of 78mph!
I totally agree with you on this point. I get much better mpg in Baja in general.
hmmmmm...
Because they top the tank totally full maybe?
I do notice a difference in Baja also not much. When they fill up it is very full and the highway speeds are lower.
35's RTT loaded very heavy 10.5 to 13.2 average city and highway.
OffRoad in deep sand washes less than 4 mpg
Slight grade makes a large change. But always averages out in the 10.5 to 13.2 range. I have tried being very light footed many times and never get more than another mile to mile and a half per gallon.

Normally around 10-11 mpg average.... best ever was 13.6 with very bald front tires.
the 6 inches of lift and 37" tires don't help though..... If I could get a little more power out of the old 3FE I wouldn't have to drive with the throttle down so much.

drove from south dakota to philly = roughly 1400 miles.
all stock, factory roof rack, some older "suv" tires. since i was moving, i had the cruiser loaded up to the gills. all interstate, 90% on cruise control at a little under 65mph. averaged 18.3 miles.
