It's been trade show week for the Expedition Portal Team, we just finished up with the 2012 SHOT Show last night (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/72395-Expedition-Portal-Visits-The-SHOT-Show-Live-Updates/), and we've been driving all throughout the night to get to the 2012 Outdoor Retailer Winter Show.

http://www.expeditionportal.com/mscott/Users/mattscott/OutdoorRetailerWinter2012/outdoor-retailer.jpg

Outdoor Retailer is the premier trade show for the outdoor industry, with the majority of the products that our members use every day, being debuted at this industry only show. We'll be bringing you live updates very similar to our 2012 SHOT Show. There are two editions of Outdoor Retailer - Summer, being the largest and Winter, a bit smaller, we'll be there this afternoon and can't wait to get started!

The Outdoor Retailer show is in Salt Lake City, Utah http://www.outdoorretailer.com/. They have two shoes each year, a Spring show and a Winter show. It's an expo for clothing, footwear, and all sorts of outdoor gear. 'We had a retail outlet for 6 years and have been an outfitter and in the firearms business for just over 20. If you're into the outdoor sports or are of the Boy Scout/self-sufficiency/survivalist/camping-hiking/traveling mindset or just like to see interesting and new gear, then this show is very good to visit. (If you decide to go and need real credentials in order to get in the show, just send me an PM)

Finally, over the past 5-6 years, I'm starting to see the REI/Northface/greenie-weenie-eco type of companies merge and meld with the outdoor hunter/Cabelas companies. There's a quite a noticeable amount of carryover from the LE (law enforcement) and military. Just this last year, Remington bought out Mountain Khakis, and Woolrich has displaying their tactical line of clothing.

The downside of knowing what there is to know about fabrics, clothing, footwear, gear, etc. and what is available out there is how disappointing it is when we do visit other stores such as REI, BassPro Shops, and others. There's some great gear out there these days and it only is getting better!

Matt, thanks for the update.

Your report would be easier to understand if you include what the item is used for. For example, "rechargable battery." And please tell us the name of the manufacturer if it's different that the name of the product. Thanks.

you'd think that before going into a big trade show they'd make sure they have their webiste functional. I know for the toy company i work for i spend a month before every show getting catalogs up dated and then a week before the show updating the website and make sure everything works right..

I mentioned the website to them today. They said that getting a working prototype for everyone to look at was a higher priority than the website. I agree. If they had a website but no prototype we wouldn't even know about the product at this point. I imagine the company reserved their spot at the show long ago and thought they would be further along by now.

I wish them luck and hope it works out well. It has several features like self leveling legs carbon fiber legs and the ability to turn into chair that are quiet novel for a cot. The production model is expected to weigh between 2 and 2.25 lbs and cost between $250 and $300 dollars.

I didn't write down the cots folded dimensions but it seemed to be about 22 inches long and 4 inches in diameter. If that is small enough for "moto travel" probably depends on you and your "moto."

They didn't want to risk breaking the only prototype so we didn't get to try it out or handle it much (prototypes are often made out of less strong but easier to work with materials). Therefore, I do not know how quickly or easily it assembles.

A company called Toughstake makes a revolutionary product that allows you to have a solid anchor point in sand or snow...

The Toughstakes are pretty neat, I have a set I've been using with my ARB awning for a few seasons now in scenarios when traditional stakes don't quite work, i.e. sand. For that intended purpose they work really well. They kept the awning secured in some pretty legit wind storms in the SR Swell last year, I was super worried that the awning was going to get destroyed before I could make it out of the tent but it didn't budge so I left it for the night. Come morning it was still as secure as I left it. I'm planning to include a pair with every awning I sell to supplement the included standard stakes.

Thanks for all the reports, I definitely cruised through and missed a few things.

It looks like it. It has the smaller anderson connector as an input. Looking at it, this is a pretty sweet (although expensive) solution. The interesting question at this point (which we will investigate), is if the input has a charge controller. We will report.

I think this could be a killer-app for the entire house system on a truck.

Awesome, thanks Scott. I'm thinking along the same lines, while more expensive, it's potential ability to fulfill multiple roles is impressive. I found a Goal Zero video online that shows it has a connection on the back to "chain" additional batteries together. If the charge controller isn't built-in to the input, perhaps it could be introduced with the "chain" connection.
Looking forward to hearing what you find out.

Grilliput (http://www.grilliput.com/02en_grilliput_design.php) is the manufacturer but I think Industrial Revolution (http://www.industrialrev.com/products/) will be the US distributor for it. They were the ones displaying it at the show this time.

Goal Zero is also working on a charge controller that is a stand alone unit to be wired in between any solar source and a vehicles battery.

I saw it at OR and it is a clean simple design although the unit I saw was a prototype ready for production.
It should be available this spring.
