View Full Version : Can wheels be too wide for certain tires?

Just curious about wheel/tire sizes. I still have the (stock) BFG Rugged Trail 265/70 16s on the truck but I'm at 50k and I'm going to be needing new tires within 4-5 months.

Since I like the idea of the tall/skinny tire, I'd like to go with a 235/85 16. According to my calculator that's only an inch bigger than my current tires. Since that's just a half inch of radius, I'm not worried about clearance.

What I am worried about, though, is whether my wheels are too wide for those tires. I don't see anything on the tire given the width, though, so I'm not sure. The wheels are the optional 16" steel wheels - anyone know what the width is off hand, and/or whether a 235/85 16 will fit on it?

My concern is that if the wheel is too wide, I imagine I could run into problems with the bead unseating, especially at low pressures.

Thanks for any help!

Toyota stock 16" steel wheels are 7" wide, which should be fine for a 235/85.

Check TireRack.com (http://www.tirerack.com/) for available models in that size and look under their "Specs" tab which will show what tire size fits which rim size, properly. According to their site for instance a BFG AT KO in a 235/85/16 size is recommended for a 6" - 7" rim.

Although I personally would run a 6" wide rim the 7" rim should cause you no issues. Just be er a littl eon the side of caution as you air down the first time or 2 till you fins a good medium om the wider rim. Wide rims can cause you to loose a bead if you go to low in comparrison to a more narrow rim witht he same tire.

The spec table for a specific tire model gives the allowable Rim Width Range, as well as the Measured Rim Width for each size. A quick look at several models, shows a range of 6-7" or 6-7.5" for this tire size.
