I thought I would start a thread on my Taco to track it as it grows up!

My Taco is a 2001 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 TRD. I feel in love with the styling of the first gen Tacoma's and knew one day I'd get one. 2001 rolled along and out popped the Double Cab... I had to have one. After years of nagging, my wife finally caved and now I have my Taco!

The RevTek lift came direct from the dealer along with upgraded Bilstein shocks.

My future plan is to go with some DR coilovers in the front and a Deaver 10 pack in the rear.... this will come early this summer.

I mounted a Uniden Pro 520XL CB radio in the ash tray location. It was very easy to make flush, and seems like a lot of others have problems making it flush. First, I removed the 2 screws that hold the ash tray slide out and cut the rear out with my dremel tool. To make it flush I used a heat gun and a screwdriver to make a small indentation on the air duct. I heated the duct up for about 20 seconds and pressed the area in with the back of screwdriver where the 90* coax elbow would hit. You only have to press it in about 1/4 of an inch. I used an 90* coax elbow to connect the Lil' Wil antenna coax to the CB. I them used 3M double sided mounting tape to secure it in place (it is a tight enough squeeze it really is not needed, but I wanted to be safe for future washboard roads).

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/2079000-2079999/2079781_56_full.jpg

I think the end results look great. (Pardon my dust, just got back from a 4 Peaks run when I took the pics!)

I ran the Coax for the antenna through the door sills on the passenger side. When I am not using the CB the antenna stores behind the rear seat and the cable is not visible. Total install took about 30 min.

http://stypica.org/AZTTORA/2005-09-24-Four_Peaks/images/9-24-2005-Four_Peaks%20015.jpg

Soon as I get around to a bed bar I'll move the CB permanently back there. But for now, and my 6'2" parking garage at work, this will have to do. It's bad enough hearing the radio antenna cllink all the way up to the 5th floor, I can't imagine adding the CB antenna.

The CB also has a PA out put which I would like to add in the near future, but not sure how I will do it. Why? I think it could be beneficial to help in spotting when in tight areas with out blocking CB waves when in large groups. Not a necessity so its last on my list.

For navigation I am using a Dell Axim X30H PDA, and a Bluetooth GPS. I modifed a glass powered PDA mount and mounted to where the air bag selector witch would be in a mini or a xtra cab.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0551.jpg

The above photo is my PDA running OnCourse Navigator, which will automatically direct you to your destination along with voice prompts.

The Rikaline GPS is tweeked for accuracy while flying... (I use Pocket FMS) and from the Rally I learned has to be retweeked during ground usage, with OutDoor Navigator.

With the PDA I am able to use Bluetooth to access the internet and surf the web and download Topo's!

I plan on upgrading this to a CarPC in the future... Just need to lay down the specs and build.

As of right now the only protection I have for my Taco is my Demello Off-Road HD round bolt on sliders built with 1.75" .120 wall round tubing.

This type of protection is critical in guarding the body panels during challenging terrain.

1. The rock sliders act as a skid plate, allowing the vehicle to slide over rocks, mounds and logs, instead of damaging the vulnerable sheet metal.

2. The rocker protection guards the side of the vehicle from damage caused when sliding into a tree or rock, as often occurs on slick surfaces.

3. When properly mounted the rock sliders provide a secure jacking point for lifting the vehicle to change a tire, or to add rocks or traction aids to extricate the vehicle from being stuck.

4. A well designed slider also acts as a step, running the length of the cab, providing easy access to the roof, racks, kayaks, etc.

5. In heavily rutted terrain, the slider allows the driver to use the bars as a transition point between the front and rear tires, as the slider allows for a smooth change from the front tire to the slider to the rear tire without causing damage.

6. On longer wheelbase vehicles, the rock sliders can act as a pivot point, effectively rotating the vehicle against a solid point (like a rock or rut) when under power. This action "cuts" the corner of a narrow, tight obstacle that does not permit backing up for a multi-point turn.

Here are my new sliders:

Future Mods:
I am looking into a Bentup Fabrications bumper for my front similar to this one with the addition of a stinger/headlight guard for animal strikes.

However I am still debating the ARB bull bar.

For the rear I am going to go with a Bentup rear bumper similar to Peter Parks Taco:

Ahhh to breathe better... I of course did the deck plate mod. (http://www.wattora.com/mods/deckplate/)

For the Air filter I am running an Amsoil filter. I had played with K&N and out of the box, I was getting oil deposits up the intake and the K&N found it's resting place in the trash out of fear of damaging the MAF.

Thanks for the compliments...I have been fortunate enough to see both Scott and Pasquale's rigs in action and check them out too:exclaim: They are some amazing rigs that are truly inspiring.

The Hoe's in the front and Deaver's in the rear set up seems to have the best results and almost the standard (if not SAS/SAC) over on TTORA. I have even thought about the SAC but decided against it, for now. I have also toyed with the idea of more than 3" of lift and shot that down too... not as reliable and may create issues out in the middle of no where.

I was looking forward to my Africa trip, but it is now cancelled due to family issues. We want to be reachable in case my wife grandmother passes. So for now it is put on hold, guess that just mean more planning, and should be for the better. Family always comes first. PERIOD.

I was a bit disappointed, but it is for the best.

I try and blueprint/plan out the entire build as before I jump into anything, and am just at the beginning build up stages! Should be some fun upcoming months as the parts and pieces com trickling in.

Great truck Wil! I have a question - how do you like the Axim / Bluetooth GPS solution for navigation? My old Sony Clie has died a painful death, and I'm in the market for a new toy for the desk. Getting one that would double as a navigation unit would be slick :jumping: .

The PDA is a great ground for expansion, however, not a PC. I love my Ax, but if I had to get a new one would opt for an X50. When I got mine it was top-o-the-line, and still holding par.

The pairing with BT devices works great and you can do just about anything you could do on a PC on the Axim. Check out Aximsite.com's forums if you have any questions.

Thanks for the reply, Wil. After some cajoling, the company sprang for a x51 (624 mHz) with the bluetooth enabled GPS :luxhello:. I'll get it rigged up and report back.

The PC setup sounds awfully nice, though. Can't wait to see it.

Scott-
I am toying with a few different idea's for the solar pannels... One, would be the the soft solar pannels similar to this Brunton unit (http://www.brunton.com/product.php?id=420):
http://www.brunton.com/images/catalog/Solaris_26_L.jpg

and my other option is a Piranha hard mount solar pannel, (http://www.piranhaoffroad.com.au/products/solarpanels/SolarPanels.htm) which might end up on top of the tool box.

Wil - the soft roll up [ edit - or fold up ] versions will give you more flexibility in mounting as your truck grows - and you can always position them for the best solar energy output - I have the mini Brunton 25 - I like it for its mini size and ease of use - I will be investing in two of the roll ups before the summer trips start. :sunny:

I agree, but the solid ones seem to be more bang for the buck... It'll all change as the build progresses. I am leaning toward the soft one to mount on the rooftop tent using Velcro, but am a bit leery of theft with the soft ones. I did find a few hard mount ones that go into the sun visors on the interior, that might be up my alley, but that is pending the CarPC set up which is yet to be determined at this point, and goes back to me trying to blueprint my basic plan prior to modifying the crap out of my Taco....Ahhh the homework never stops!

Either one you choose - hard or soft (did I just say that?) I think portable instead of fixed is the way to go. A fixed panel really limits your options to capture the sun and has too much influence on how/where you park the truck.

I am running the exact panels you have pictured, with the exception that mine are 12"x72" each. They are made by Iowa Thin Film for Brunton.

I have had excellent success with mine. 40watts of power rolled up the size of a newspaper.

Ok, I have ordered the Engel 45 Fridge/Freezer with a transit bag...

http://www.i-m-d.com/engel/MT45-rear.gif

I opted for the 45 since a TwoZone and TZ transit bag will be added to the mix. I was worried about a nasty rumor I read on the OZ Forums that the TwoZone voids the warranty from Engel, however, it does not and in fact TwoZone and Engel do trade shows together. If any one else is interested in me picking them up a TwoZone let me know (via PM), they'll be crossing the pond soon!

http://www.bta4wd.com/images/tz05.jpg

Now the Question:
I will be removing my rear seat to install the Engel, but need to know which mounting solution is best suited for me. I am thinking the Engel Slide (that wil slide Length ways, so the Fridge/Freezer could be slid in a fashion similar to BajaTaco's (pimping design BTW). Or my other option is the Transit Slide-lok mounting solution.

What do you think is best?

Everything is going to be removable, and be able to transform back to the "stock" way. For example: I want to make it so that it can quickly transform back to a 4 person seating. I have plans for all quick connects, and disconects and proper seat bolt disconnects in the works!

Any advice?

basically it is an add on compartment to your fridge freezer. It is hinged so you can lift the twozone up and access the engel. By placing the engel on freeze you end up with a freezer in the engel and it cools the two zone down to fridge temps.

It does mean that you fridge will be working overtime till temps get regulated, however with a quality fridge this should not be an issue.

Wil - First - congratulations on this fine purchase - you will not ever be disappointed in the unit :)

(This is for an xtracab) I located my Engel behind the pass seat ( so I could still recline if I was solo) I did not mine loosing the mini storage space under the floor - and the slide-lok was less $$ - I used the Slide-lok and mounted it on a piece of 3/4 ply and screwed it down to the floor where the mini back seats fold down to it over hangs onto the fold out cup holders - I can remove it at anytime and bring the back area to stock with four screws.

Foot note: if you store most of your food in Zip lock bags your fridge will stay cleaner longer - making the removal for cleaning less. This will also help you to layer food depending on when you need it - I was able to keep food frozen at the bottom and kept the fridge at 32 degrees keeping the food on top at appox 45 degrees -

Last tip - get a temp gauge so you can monitor it - I have the simple Engel one you drop the one end in - I mounted it near the back window so I can see it in the mirror.

Other notes - when wheeling hard or washboard roads the fridge does have a small amount of movement due to heavy vibrations - this appears due to how the slide lock - locks the fridge in place and how tall the fridge is ( leverage)

I am ordering another Engel for the 80 series with the Engel slide and will be able to see if that mounting system is more solid

Thanks for the input! I am thinking the slide might be a nice feature, and the ability to slide the unit could come in handy, as mentioned for reclining purposes. I am thinking of mounting in in the center of the cab for (C.G) and the slide could aid in removal. I also have some tranist wheels coming along with the unit! Should be a nifty add on when needed!

Prior to the ExPo Rally in Nov I did the dif breather mod, following these two write ups:
WATTORA's Write-UP (http://www.wattora.com/mods/diffbreather/)
4x4 Wire's Write-Up (http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/minutemods/breather/)

The following is a summary of the two and what I did... most pictures are off of the WATTORA Write up. The have a note stating that this does work on the 3rd gen Taco's too!

Parts/Materials Needed:

1 Toyota part number 90404-51026 Listed as a "Union"
8 feet of 1/4" rubber fuel line
2 small hose clamps
A few nylon wire (zip) ties

Tools Needed:

Box/Open wrenches, 10mm and 14mm
Screwdrivers
Wire Cutters
1 cup boiling water

Estimated Time: < 1 Hour

Procedure:

Here's a shot of all the parts, with the exception of the hose.

Dip one end of your rubber hose in a cup of boiling water for 30 seconds, then insert the stock breather threads into the hose. You want to get all of the thread into the tubing. This will allow your diff to continue to breath as it would in a stock configuration and will cut down on the chances of dust or moisture getting sucked in. Secure the breather with one of the hose clamps. Some folks use VW type fuel filters on the ends of their breathers.

There are a variety of places you can vent to. Some choose to run a hose all the way up to the engine compartment, I followed the electric locker cable/brake lines up by the fuel filler neck. This view is from the perspective of the left, rear tire, looking up into the bed rail. The stock breather end of the hose was secured with wire-ties so that it was above the fuel neck. The hose was routed along the fuel filler neck, over the frame and along the locker cable.

In this case I removed my fuel cover and drilled a 1/4" hole in the cover and chose this place to mount the breather (behind the fuel door)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0564.jpg

Once the hose was routed down near the differential, I left a bend in the hose so that it would not be pulled tight when the suspension flexes. Once the hose is secured, cut off the excess and fitted the hose over the "Union". Secure the hose with the remaining hose clamp.

nice post Wil.
One question though, when you route the hose through the filler cap, do you just push it through and the expansion that inserting the breather in the hose causes hold it in place, or is it attached somehow else?

I attached the breather using the boiling water, masked and spray painted the breather black, then inserted the end of the hose through the 1/4" hole I drilled. With the hose on it is thicker than 1/4" hole and holds nicely, but I added a hose clamp and zip tie on the rear for redundancy. Then ran the hose down the fuel neck then followed the e-locker line to the breather. If you look closely at my pic (behind the fuel filler door)... you can see where I changed my mind and removed the fisrt hose clamp.

Hope that helps you out Erin!

Next mod is going to be the Engel Fridge/Freezer, with a TwoZone compartment!

I am currently debating Line-X on the lower Rocker pannels...Prior to the DO Sliders I had a rock do a good number on the passenger side, so now it is Line-X or repaint to prevent rust.

One of the two is next... then the snorkel! YEAH BABY, YEAH!

A few weeks after I got my Taco I did the "Grey Wire Mod." For those of you unfamilar with this mod, it enables you to use the TRD e-locker in 2WD and 4Hi rather than 4Lo only. This is done by grounding the grey (not grey on all model years) on the #8 pin from the Denso 4Wheel drive computer.

Note: This mod works for only the first and second generation Tacoma's.

Parts/Materials Needed:

1 12" piece of wire (18g if you want to match factory)
1 butt connector
1 ring connector
some electrical tape

Tools Needed:

10mm socket and ratchet
wire cutters
philips head screw driver

Estimated Time: < 25 min

Procedure:

1) Remove the plastic strip that has four screws in it on the driver’s side.

2) Remove the driver’s side-kick panel. This would be down by your left foot.

http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-corner/reading/Toy-locker/image002.jpg

3) Locate the 4WD computer, it is toward the back of the panel area close to the firewall. It's obvious which box is the 4WD computer by the decal placed on it (it is about 4 inches square by 1 inch thick).

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/4x4%20Computer%20small.jpg

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/4x4%20Computer%20Close%20Up%20small.jpg

4) Unplug the white connector going into the 4WD computer and remove the tape and protective sheathing.

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/Connector%20small.jpg

5) Make a 12" patch wire using your wire, ring connector and butt connector.

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/12%20Inches%20of%20Wire%20small.jpg

6) Locate the the #8 wire on this conector as noted above it might not be grey on all models. The GREY wire is located between a GREEN-YELLOW wire and a WHITE-BLACK wire.

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/gwlm-diagram.gif

7) Cut the GREY wire about 3 inches from the connector and connect your patch wire. Also tape off the end of the grey wire that goes into the wire bundle.

8) Next, locate a screw to ground the patch to. Any screw going into the body will work. The one I used is right above the 4WD computer and already had some equipment grounded to it. Itís a 10mm brass colored bolt which is easy to reach and is an excellent candidate.

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/Ground%20Screw%20small.jpg

9) Install the the driver’s side-kick panel andplastic strip.

The locker will now activate in 2Hi, 4Hi, and 4Lo and the indicator light on the dash will function same as it did before. That's all there is to it!!

The above pics are not mine and from various websites... I did not think to document my modification.

Well, after seeing Scott's truck up at the expo, I was jealous that he had all of his "stabilizers" on his cup holders since mine got torn up by Nalgene's and larger cups, and looked like this:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0583.jpg

I went in to the three local Toyota Dealership's to get a replacement and they all told me that the 2001 does not have any cup retainers. Huh!? So after some searching came up with the solution, < $5.00 fix, and < 15 Min!

Parts/Materials Needed:
4 cup retainers Toyota Part 6695-AD011 ($2.32)
1 cup retainers Toyota Part 6695-AD012 ($0.58)

Tools Needed:
10 MM socket, and extension
Philips head screwdriver

Estimated Time: < 15 min

Procedure:
1) Remove the two screws on the center console just below the forward cup holder (1 per side)

2) Remove the two 10mm bolts on the aft bottom of center console

3) Remove the two 10mm bolts in the "hidden" lower console.

4) Remove the console, and unscrew the 5 Phillip's head screws and plastic spacers.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0585.jpg

5) Remove the old cup retainers and replace with the new ones.
This picture shows the difference in materials, (my only two that were not ripped off!) The new ones are made of a rubber compound as opposed to the old foam ones.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0586.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0587.jpg

6) Reinstall the console and all screws and bolts.

7) Enjoy, new longer lasting retainers!

Next is the 43 QT. Engel Fridge/Freezer with all the goodies! Should arrive this Tuesday according to UPS. I ordered the works:
43 QT. Fridge/Freezer (MT45)
Transit Bag for the MT45
Fridge Slide (Slide Lok from Africa)
Engel digital freezer thermometer
Engel Hinge Lock

Oh, waiting is the worst part, especially when they are all supposed to arrive on Tuesday 2/14 (my Monday/first day back to work) and I have to be at work at 19:00. YIKES!

Monday the TwoZone compartment shipping arragenments should also be finalized and on it's way this week... more waiting.

After opening everything and installing the handles, I installed the hinge lock.

The lock was super easy to install.

1) Remove lid.

2) Seperate Lock from spacer.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0608.jpg

3) Remove hinges on Engel, install the lock behind the LEFT hinge and retighten screws.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/2079000-2079999/2079781_76_full.jpg

I decided to coat the hardware with black Plasti-Dip to mitigate vibrations, and prevent scratches to the Engel's handles.
http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/images/plastidip.jpg

At this point and time I only have one side coated and will do the other tomorrow since I had to go to work  I also hope to finish the complete install tomorrow, if time permits. A write-up will follow.

Tell me more about this two zone compartment...
The TwoZone (http://www.twozone.com.au/) is an add-on compartment to the Engel. It basically goes in place of your lid and your lid is reused on top of the compartment, thus increasing the size of the Fridge/Freezer. Your lid is then reused on the top of the TwoZone. There were Rumors on some OZ Forums of the compartment Voiding Warranty, but these rumor are false, and in fact Engel promotes it uses and does exhibitions shows with TwoZone. (I will take pics as soon as I get it). The TwoZone will increase the capacity by 21 liters (22 quarts if I calculated it correctly), for a weight gain of 11lbs. It measures 21.65" X 14.96" X 10.24".

Also, I heard the slide takes up a large footprint, any chance you can take a picture of the fridge on the slide? I have the same fridge and I just want a reference before I start building/buying...

It is a slightly larger Footprint, at this time I do not have a picture, but I'll get you one as soon as I get off of work. I'll post it up tomorrow for you.

Well the Engel is finally installed.:victory:

It took me a bit longer than expected, but I think the end results are great. I was originally going to mount the slide in the middle of the cab, but with the addition of the twozone, I did not want to cut out the rear view mirror too much. I also became concerned about the height, and wanted to make sure I was able to get things in and out easily. I was questioning my decision to get the slide as opposed to slide-lok...when the light bulb went off! END RESULT: Mount the slide so that it sides out the door!

It slides out about 4-5 More inches than in this pic...

Easy Loading and unloading now!

It is close but not touching any of the door molding.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/IMG_0641.jpg

Now that my Plasti-Dip had dried, I also installed the eyes for the hooks today, now that I decided to keep the slide. It was real easy, unscrew all four hooks holding the handle in place and place the eye brackets behind the handles. While everything was out I also installed the temperature gauge. I am impressed by the sensitivity of this thing. Just by my body being near it I could watch the ambient temperature change! To install I just took of the back and ran it through the clay. Here's some pics:

Note the temp difference because I touched it to move it...

Thanks for the compliments! I just might take you up on the bed bar (shoot me a PM). My future plans for the bed is a tool box (dual battery, air, and tools), I am thinking of adding the African Outback Drawers (?) water storage, and top it off with a rooftop tent. My set up will be very similar to Scott’s truck, with a few variances. I want my kitchen off the drivers side and tent and shower on the Passenger side. I hope to be done by the end of summer!

As mentioned above, I think the slide will be a nice touch for the side kitchen set up, as well as aiding in loading and unloading. I have spent a long time planning, and couldn't have planned this one... It was just dumb luck, with a great outcome.

My general thoughts on the slide are positive. So far no rattles, and slides with ease, the more weight, the easier it slides. The bearing are sealed and I think they will be highly durable. Only thing I need to do is tweak the mount, and get rid of my erector set setup I have going (I need a welder).

I am going to mount all Electrical connections under the slide, and hope to have some room to spare.

You truck is coming along very nicely. I’ve very envious. Ditto on the BajaTaco.com. A few questions about the eye brackets that you installed behind the handles to use for tie down points. Did these come with the Engel or the Slide? Was the Transit Bag “pre cut” to accommodate these?
The install is real nice and professional looking. The slide out through the door is a very nice touch indeed. Job well done. I just wish that I had a Double Cab instead of the Extra Cab. It seems to make access to items in the rear much easier.

No the bag was not pre-cut, however on the front it did have the stiching to cut it out... for some reason the back did not have this feature.

Over the weekend I got new shoes, again! This is my third set of tires since the ExPo Rally, and hope these ones stick for a while.

I too joined the club, and ended up with a set of 255/85 R16 BFG MT/KM. Not to bad, fit snugly, and as you can see anxiously await some Hoe's and Deavers. I think the Deavers, will be first on my list since they move the rear axle forward a 1/2 inch. It is needed as you can see:

I also got around to installing my auxiliary fuse block. It is a Blue Sea block (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=91545) from West Marine (thanks Bajataco, DesertDude, Expeditionswest). These are really nice units, and a bargain compared to other units on the market.
http://www.westmarine.com/images/full/fuseblock_f.jpg

Although, my installation is only temporary, it is beginning to serve it's purpose. It will later be moved to the rear tool box, along with a second battery. It will support the full time power requirement units, such as the radios, Engel, lights, ect...

For the time being I mounted it to the rear wall using an old 4 ga. amplifier kit I had laying around. The pro to this is that it has an in line fuse on the positive cable, that will help prevent an fires, or melt downs.

Very nice Wil. Good looking shoes on the Taco. What did you do with the old new set? They surely were not that worn, were they?

Umm.. What set? LOL. Set one was the GY Wrangler's which got punctured on the way home from the Rally, (there's a post somewhere around her about that!)

Set two, was to replace the GY's and were BFG All Terrain KO's. They had about 2,000 miles on them, and Discount tire could never quite balance them out, causing my dash rattle to be more pronounced. I took them in to have them rebalanced for the 5th time in about 6 weeks, since they would not deem them out of round. While in line at discount tire, I thought about the commercial of the old lady "returning" the tire through the window. Bam! Now I was returning the tires. So I returned the set of BFG KO's, and upgraded to the MT's for about $50. Best part of all this was they were super nice about it and had no problems helping me out. I have to give to them, they may be slow, but the customer service, rocks. Just plan on half a day, but it is so worth it at Discount tire.

Congrats on the new shoes Wil!

As you mentioned in your PM. Without moving the rear axle forward a bit you are going to have some major rubbing.

There are really three options to solve this:

1. Deavers (best long-term solution)
2. Fill and re-drill the center hole: Weld up the center-pin hole of the rear axle, then move the hole by .5" and re-drill.
3. Use this http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&autofilter=1&part=AFC%2D20270&N=115+311540&autoview=sku

hey wil...i thought you were at 22% on the mod-o-meter yesterday!?

what is this 1% mod that you're not telling us about!?

:D

:victory: My TwoZone unit and Ezy-Move arrived into PHX on Tuesday and I am awaiting it to clear customs. It should be clear on Friday. Customs has to clear it by Friday at noon or they don't get paid! So with that in the works, that brings me to 23%.

The TwoZone:
http://www.expeditionportal.com/equipment/equipment_reviews/fridge/Research/Research/smaller/fig10.bmp

The Ezy-Move:
http://www.expeditionportal.com/equipment/equipment_reviews/fridge/Research/Research/smaller/Fig11.bmp

Still on list is over $10,000 of mods, so who knows if I'll ever be fully complete. The list never ends.

But upcoming will be a snorkel, on board air system, suspension, tent, shower system, and a CarPC to replace the radio.

I am finding the PC is the hardest to research. My current PDA set up is great, but a PC can do more. The plan is to use the PC to replace the double DIN stock radio, and replace that with a touchscreen monitor. The PC will act as the primary source of navigation using GPS, have radio interface with AM/FM and XM, Camera Capabilities (Recording), Voice activation (PRO), MP3 ect. Players. I figure my laptop can do all above so why not incorporate it into the vehicle?

Though I am not a computer guru, the build up should be fun, and involve some learning. As for mounting, I am toying with using the glove box or "hidden console" to minimize dust exposure. It will be based on Pentium mini ITX motherboard. I thought about using a MAC Mini, but the GPS technology is a bit behind on the MAC's at this point in comparison to the PC platforms.

As of now it is all research and a dream, but easily feasible under $1000. I guess I just have to win the Lotto!

I wonder if I am the first in the US to have this, but know someone else has to have brought one of these back home with them.

I will be doing a review on them to be added to the Equipment section in addition to the fridge/freezer review. It'll be fun testing them out during the black mountain trip!

In the last picture you can see my *temporary* Engel hook-up. I twisted the wires to prevent electrical interference with the CB.

Okay Wil, my question is what gauge wire did you use for the Engel? 12 gauge or 10 gauge? I'm doing mine now and want to make sure I do this right...

Mine is 12 ga. I found it was the largest i could find locally. I is an waterproof female socket designed for outside. I got it Checker for about $9.

The Engel has a built in fuse, but I thought it would be good to double up, and have it fused on the block as well.

HongerVenture
04-24-2006, 07:11 PM
Yeah, I found a female 12v socket at Frye's already... though I'm somewhat dubious about its current rating. I think it will suffice though.

12 gauge wire it is then... I just wanted to make sure. 10 gauge seemed like a little overkill. I will more than likely use 10 gauge from the battery to the fuse block however. For now I have a much cheaper Buss Fuse block in my cab... I will eventually upgrade to the BlueSea block. =)

Thanks for the tips.

A Twozone is probably in my future as well. I'd like to hear more from you on its performance. Can you really keep the bottom section frozen and the top section just chilled? Does it truly offer a Fridge and Freezer all in one?

Joel-
I should have a review on the TwoZone posted up once Scott returns. You can have dual zones, and with enough playing you can have one larger freezer or fridge, pending your contents of the fridge. Our our last trip we had a bottle of rum, some beers, some Cokes, Fish and shrimp, in the Engel, and lettuce, carrots, pineapple and such in the Twozone. I had it on setting 4 for the trip out to utilize the turbo and get everything cold. We left it on 4 overnight, and then went to a setting of just over 1.5 for the remainder of the trip. Worked great. The bottom stays just a bit colder, and with the TZ area just abit warmer. TwoZone in Aus. states a difference of 1 degree C, but I have yet to test of what the actual difference is. Look for the upcoming review when Scott returns.

I installed my bed bar this weekend.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Taco/IMG_0829.jpg

This is a temporary set up to haul the hi-lift. I also painted the handle for now... We'll see how long until it turns red again!

As you can see I installed some el-cheap-o lights I had laying around from my Jeep... not too bad. They are 55w H3's... I think I picked 'em up at a garage sale in Prescott for $5 or $10 dollars new in the package.

I installed a switch in the blanks under the ash tray location (my CB). So watch out if you tailgate me!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Taco/IMG_0831.jpg

Now I just have to figure out how to tie the lights into the reverse switch to enable them to come on when the truck is put into reverse and still be able to use the switch for off and on. As soon as I figure that one out I'll post it up.

I use a relay for all the wiring, the switch is fused with a 15A, and the lights are 30A to the relay. (I am not sure but maybe it should be 15A too?)

The bed bar looks good, I like the fire extinguisher mounted on the wheel well. How often do you check the pressure? I had one in the back of the truck and last night while installing the sleeping/storage platform for the summer I looked at the fire extinguisher and it was reading 0 psi! Not good if I would have had to use it.

Your 15 A fuse should be fine since the two 55 W lights use just over 9 A. The 30 A relay will be fine as well. If something goes wrong, the fuse should blow before anything else asuming you isntalled the fuse immediately after the battery.

Thanks! I actually spot check my extinguishers, however the sun has done a number to the gauges.

As for the wiring, I have all power leads coming directly off my aux blue sea fuse block, and should not encounter any problems from that.

The rear of the cab is a mess, as I plan on adding a tool box to mount the wiring in along with a second battery. It is just a waiting game on funds, as my wife goes into surgery at the end of the month and we have been pinching every penny in preparation of going to just one income through the end of summer!

PART 1: I added and OEM alarm. Sourcing the alarm and the wiring harness was the hardest part, however, eBay came to the rescue. I decided to OEM for the vibrations, and starter disable. Why do I need am alarm? I guess I really do not, but the starter disable helps ease my mind a bit. The alarm was super easy to install, and took under 90 min. Works great!

Well last month my Taco Finally got the new Brakes it needed badly!:jumping: I ended up with powerslot Rotors and some Hawk Performance pads. Huge improvement, and the deal with the dirt/sand/mud well. The slots are large enough to allow the gases from under the pads escape from above and below. So far nothing but praise about them from me.

Well, I decided to play around with the rear of the cab and build a platform similar to BajaExplorer's set up in hope that we might have more room for the dogs (1 Husky and 1 Lab).

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Random/IMG_1206.jpg

It is made from Plywood and covered with the cheapest carpet from Home depot. I was able to use all the existing seat holes to mount the wood, and the rear shelf utilized the existing hole that held the hooks in place.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Random/IMG_1208.jpg

I am not sure what I want to do with the factory jack, and have actually used it places I could not get the Hi-Jack so it is staying in the truck. I made cut outs and a cover for the rear shelf.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Random/IMG_1207.jpg

Also another cool thing came in the mail, I thought it was a sweet find on ebay for $9.00! (I think BajaTaco has this same unit.)

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Random/IMG_1210.jpg

Tested it out and the pressure is a bit less than what I wanted, but definitely a vast improvement over a gravity fed bag.

The platform will have the Fridge on it, as some saw during the Gunsight run. But that was version 1.0 and I am upgrading it to version 1.1 and it will have a "TWIST." My lovely wife came up with a great idea and I am runing with it. We'll test V.1.1 on the trip to Baja.

The platform also provides stability for the Engel slide and has eliminated all rattle issues that I did have, it is all a part of the testing process that I should have in my review for you all shortly.

The shower did come with the 12 plug.

Yep, that is the shower I have. I dig it. 9 bucks is an awesome price. Did that incl. shipping?

A "TWIST" eh? I am imagining another piece of plywood on a post hinge, that sits just above the deck. When at camp it pivots so the slides are parallel to the rear wall, and the fridge slides out the door. When driving, it pivots perpendicular to the rear wall. One dog on each side of the fridge, and you can open it from the seated position while driving. :)

Close, both dogs like to be by each other, so it is going to go in then pivot so that it is perpendicular to the rear wall. The Blue Sea fuse block will also be relocated to the new portion of the wall.

The water heater issue has yet to be determined what system I will use. It is a HUGE toss up between GLIND, HELTON and PIRANHA. I want to avoid the electric one for now, IMO just another thing that can break and be hard to get parts for if needed. But that is a two fold issue, on the other hand I am taping into the coolant system, but I think repairablity will be easier this way.

Next up is a dual battery set up... I have everything except for the isolator combiner... on to more research... any suggestions?

Get the mobi-arc unit. Here's my write up...(which I think you read already)

Key Components...
main battery - odyssey 1200mjt
aux battery - odyssey 1700mjt (battery specs (http://www.odysseybatteries.com/batteries.htm))
mobi-arc isolator (more info here (http://www.perfectswitch.com/isolator.htm), and tech specs here (http://www.perfectswitch.com/images/isolatorspecs.gif))
Rockford Fosgate 1/0 cable for the (+) and 2/0 for the (-)
I only used 2/0 because we had some left overs at work
Rockford Fostgate positive battery post lugs

I'll try and keep this as organized as possible so forgive me if I ramble...

My reasons for choosing the 'perfect switch' is efficiency, reliability, and the theory behind the isolator works for my application.

Efficiency/Reliability

There are a couple ways of isolating batteries...
1. Solenoid - You can find these in your winch. Essentially they are contacts that open and close, isolating and combining your batteries, respectively. Solenoids are rated for interrupting large amounts of current that's why they are found on your winch and with battery systems. When contacts open and break excessive amounts of current a layer of oxidation builds on the current carrying contacts. This layer of oxidation creates resistance. Resistance reduces efficiency. In turn making it harder for your alternator to fully charge your batteries. Also say when you combine your batteries to winch, the battery that has to power the winch through the solenoid will waste power because of the solenoid. And I hear occassional stories of solenoid failure with winches. Maybe because it's not only electrical but mechanical as well.

2. Diodes - such as the surepower isolator. Diodes by nature waste power (watts). Typical diode isolators drop the voltage by 0.7 volts, I know it doesn't sound like much but at high currents the losses add up. Power (watts) = I (current) x E (voltage) So let's say you're winching and the winch is drawing 200 amps.
140 watts = 200 amps x 0.7 volts. What this means is at a loss of .7 volts, and 200 amps of current flowing you're wasting (losing) 140 watts. This loss of electrical energy becomes energy in the form of heat. That's why the diode type isolators are larger and have heat fins. As heat rises, the resistance rises, and excessive heat can cause premature failure.

3. MOSFETs - this is what mobi-arc uses. The electrical theory is a little too deep for me but I've actually tested my isolator to see if what they advertise is true. I didn't write down the numbers but what I did was hooked up the winch to draw current from both batteries (not how I would typically use it, I'll explain later). With a clamp on DC ammeter I measured how much current was flowing through the isolator. I think about 120 amps were going through the isolator. I then measured what the voltage was before and after the isolator and it was a difference of about .04 volts. So with the same P = IE equation that equals 120 amps x .04 volts = 4.8 watts.

Now I know it's not a whole lot of power, I think I'm just critical about it because electricity is what I deal with every day. But think about this - would 140 watts of heat or 4.8 watts of heat be easier to dissapate? Hence the reason why the perfect switch is smaller and doesn't need heat sinks. Another benefit of this type of isolator is that it's solid state, there are no moving parts = less things to break.

How it works...
I have the Single Rectifier Unit, (think direction or current flow)which isolates the main battery from the aux battery. It does NOT isolate the aux battery from the main battery.

Another way of saying this is the aux battery can and is feeding the main battery as well as everything connected to the main battery. In contrary the main battery cannot feed the aux battery.

Essentially what this means is, anything fed from your aux battery will only take power from your aux battery, your main battery will be untouched. Now anything fed from your main battery will be fed from your main battery and your aux battery via the isolator.

Now because it is designed this way, the main battery will never have a lesser charge than the aux battery. Why? Because the isolator allows the current to flow from the aux battery to the main battery, but not in the opposite direction. So it's like the aux battery is always jump starting the main battery. That's why the main battery will always have a greater charge than the aux, so it's a guarantee that I will be able to start my truck.

So here's the jist of what's connected to my aux battery..
1 fridge
multiple 12v outlets
3 lightforce lights
4 rock lights
2m
cb
air compressor
winch

All of these accessories take power from the aux battery and the aux battery only. These are the accessories that have a greater chance of draining a battery, either over long periods (fridge camping) or short one's (extensive winching).

Why don't I combine my batteries for winching?
I haven't done too much winching but after talking to many many people, one good battery is enough. I don't frequent anything too extreme and even if I did, I could always use jumper cables to combine the batteries. And if I did an extreme winch pull and killed a battery, it would be my aux battery and not my starting (main) battery.

If I did use a system that would combine the batteries and did a crazy winch pull that killed both batteries - then what? Drive around for an hour to make sure your batteries are somewhat charged. Chances are slim but I don't want to take that risk.

Now let's say you use your radio while camping a lot (which would be connected to your main battery), there's always the possiblity of killing your main battery and your aux battery. I typically don't use my radio or anything wired from the main battery, while at camp. If you do use a lot of factory wired accessories when the truck is off then this may not be the choice for you... If I do choose to listen to xm at camp I'm not afraid to because the current draw is so minimal and slow that I can catch the battery before it's too late with a voltmeter.

Whew, that was long winded. Clear as mud? I hope I helped people more than I confused people :(

FlyingWen got me this wonderful set up for my birthday. I didn't even ask for it, she just thought it was bad *** and got me it. How cool is that!?

Well the install was pretty basic, remove the old A Pillar cover and replace with the Lo-Tek. I had to drill 2 hole in the A-pillar and total install was around 2 hours.

Here you can see the two, OEM and Lo-Tek side by side:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Taco/Gauge%20Pod/IMG_1286.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Taco/Gauge%20Pod/IMG_1285.jpg

The Lo-Tek required slight sanding for the Cyberdyne Gauges to fit.
I ended up with a Voltmeter and an Ambient Temp gauge (for the fridge).

I took Duct Tape to the rear to prevent rattles on washboards as shown:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Taco/Gauge%20Pod/IMG_1288.jpg

Final install Pics:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/flyingwil/Taco/Gauge%20Pod/IMG_1294.jpg

I am toying with the idea of adding more temperature senders for the temp gauge.
Engel Fridge/Freezer
TwoZone Unit
Ambient Air

I could then use a 3-Way selecting switch to switch between the three. That be kind of cool huh?

Yep, sure looks like it to me! Arrived in great condition, with the exception that the hardware bag was broken, but hey, it did go halfway across the world to get to my door!

The color seems to be a bit lighter than I remember the Series 2 Eezi-Awns. It is currently "airing out" in the garage, since it has the fresh coat of wood sealer smell to it.

You mean I have to mount it!?

Really though, we have given it tons of thought, and have not yet decided, but are leaning towards a custom cover similar to Scott's set up, and along the lines of Mark F'n S's and Capt. Coors.

Ultimate bottom line will be a CanBack, but that is down the road. The CanBack will allow the fidge to go in the rear, (with the slide) and Outback style drawers! Sweet! But it is one step a time for right now.

Yeah, I am thinking to hold off on that until I get my drawer system in, once that is in it will become a must! (plus I have 10K left on the warranty). AT this point I do not think it is too much weigh over the weight of say a topper, but once the drawers are in it'll push it over.

Shrockworks makes killer stuff, I was hoping they had stuff for my 4Runner, but I was too impatient to wait ... can't wait to see your Taco with one. And can't wait to see the dual-battery setup as the Taco and 4Runner are the same up front ... good deal.

Did you call Shrockworks? They have sliders and a killer front winch/bumper

Currently they only have items for the 4th gen 4Runners and 2005+ Tacomas. Wil's truck looks like the test truck for the 95.5 to 04 Tacoma equipment.

I had some money sitting there for a Suzuki bumper I was going to get, but then ended up with my 3rd Gen 4Runner and they weren't sure when that stuff was going to be built. Oh well, happy with the TJM and it's on.

can't wait to see Wil's truck ... and Mark F'n has his supercool Shrockworks bumper for his Nissan too.

Still waiting on Shrockworks to finish the test fitting, dang do I miss my truck.. But it is sooo going to be worth it.

For the batteries I went with two 1200MJT's in the stock location with a custom tray made out of angle iron using a SurePower 1315-200.

Do you know if Shrockworks plans on making sliders for the 01-04 trucks? Hey...if they need a truck to help them measure some out...I would be MORE than willing to lend them a hand....:D

I can't wait to see how the bumper turns out....

They are using my truck for measurements... so I believe so, along with some Diff Protectors!

The application will be for Tacoma and 4Runner rear third members.

That is awesome. I always lusted after their TJ stuff when I had the Jeep. It has got to be the stoutest sliders out there for the Jeep. Figure the same will probably be true for the Taco's.

Unfortunately, I still do not have my truck back from Texas. Seems like it has been a long time with out my baby.

Planning and design are still in the works with out the truck here in Arizona, as rear bumper nears finishing, and powder coating dates are set.

The rear bumper (CBI Off-Road FAB (http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/)) will be a swing out design, with the rear quarter panels cuts and built in skids. The rear tire mount will have a rear view camera, jack-mount with Quick Fists (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php/action/category/id/3/subid/47/), Hella Matador light (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php/action/item/id/207/prevaction/category/previd/4/prevstart/0/), and a storage solution.

The Front Bumper, once completed by Shrockworks (http://www.shrockworks.com/), will be outfitted with PIAA's (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php/action/item/id/61/prevaction/category/previd/4/prevstart/0/), and LightForce (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php/action/item/id/49/prevaction/category/previd/4/prevstart/0/) lights, the winch will be (testing) T-Max EW-9000-WCP, with Master Pull Synthetic (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php/action/item/id/154/prevaction/category/previd/1/prevstart/0/) winch line. The Shackles will be Black Rat front and rear.

Most items are sitting in the garage waiting for the install once the truck and bumpers are complete.

The Camera system is in the works thanks to Total Vision Products (http://www.totalvisionproducts.com/products/racing.html) in Tuscon, AZ. They are working on the monitor placement using the OEM rear view mirror assembly. The Taco will be equipped with underbody camera's and front and rear viewing camera's.

For navigation, the Delorme Earthmate PN-20 (http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10106&minisite=10020) arrived a few days ago, I have yet found time to play and upload maps. Basic playing around with the unit, it is a SWEET unit. The Deluxe bundle does not include a mount, to on to more searching for a mount.

The seats and drawer saga continues as I am leaning towards out fitting using Recaro Seats as we can get matching baby seats for the new one on her way in June. This will result in a complete overhaul of the rear deck system, and I am trying to avoid stock if at all possible to maintain my increased storage solutions. The issue will be making the seat removable and replaceable with a storage platform while maintaining safety.

I will keep you all posted as things progress.

Thanks... The 15's wouldn't work with my 255/85 R16's... I looked into it more and the Wheelers wheels are just ProComp's 1069-6883. I loved how thick they looked on your tuck at the holes.

It sucks right now with all the goodies sitting in the garage waiting to be installed. I have one thing on... and that is to be continued....

Ok here is a rough estimate time line:

Dual Batteries - Done... working on article
SurePower - 50% done, need to install the indicator light this weekend
TwoZone Cover - In testing right now ... working on review article
Front Bumper - I don't know when they will be done with it... but as soon as I get it I think I am going to be sick (so I can install the lights, winch, and the bumper!)
Rear Bumper - I should get an update in a few more weeks, then there is a long wait for powder coating here in AZ... so I would guess 2-3 weeks for them to complete the bumper, 1 week to ship, and 2 weeks to powder coat. so that would be the end of June for the rear.
After the bumpers are on the camera's can be installed, they have my rear-view mirror right now for the monitor placement.

Very cool Wil!

The Total Vision system will incorporate a review camera which will replace the rear-view mirror. With the rear swing out bumper, I am planning on loosing most of my rearward vision and this should correct it and give me an aditional views of underbody and fron and rear. The dub din location in the Tacoma is too low IMO for a rear-view, and taking the eyes off the road/trail too much. (I tend to fall into holes). I am working on locating a PC there with a touch screen face.

So far this one is the winner:

Last week......what was your CEL all about?
The CEL was triggered by the Cat system and reset and has not tripped since. I blame the mud. I also had them replace a leaking rear seal, prior to leaving for AZ.

Unfortunately I have to make another appointment here to replace my driver's side window track. I think I bent it, and it sqeaks incredibly loud if the window is not completely closed. Then again it may just be a clamp popped out.

Rear suspension is on with the exception of shocks. It is nice to no longer have blocks in the rear!

I went with All Pro's 5" lift springs, and tonight I will begin working on the front CO's.
