Acetylene bottle in the back of a Toyota FJ

You can make the rules but you can't make people follow them.

This happened in Regina Tuesday (29 November 2011).

Here is what the owner said:

So my time almost came to an end this morning... I'm very lucky to be
alive.

I had an acetylene bottle in my truck, the valve was bumped so slightly and
over night the truck filled with the gas. I noticed the smell, and opened
the doors to air out the truck. I drove the truck out of the garage to get
some more air movement. I went to roll the pass side window down and as
soon as I touched the power windows. BAM - with me in the truck. I lost all
hearing out of my right ear and got a scratch on the back of my head. All
things considering, I'm alive.

Pictures tell 1000 words.
Don't take any minutes or seconds you have for granted... it may be your
last...

Well, the tires still look good :sombrero:

Most likely the guy escaped serious damage by being inside the explosion. Most everything was moving away from him. At first I couldn't believe the extent of the damage. The thing is pulverized! I think the reason is that the gas had time to settle into every cavity before igniting.

I'm glad the guy was OK, but geez. You should never leave a gas bottle in a closed vehicle or transport a gas bottle without the protective steel cap.

Thats intense. Glad to see no one died.

My neighbor fills Acetiline balloons on New Years or the 4th of July. Fill the balloons up from the un-lit torch, tie them one at a time to the end of a peice of bamboo (a long one), and set up aand light a small bottle propane torch about 15 feet away. Hold the baloon over the flame using the bamboo pole and BOOOOM. Loudest fireworks I have ever seen. I wouldnt do it myself though. I am afraid static electricity would set it off.

This was big news on the FJ Forum when it happened. Then I believe the post was deleted at that member's request due to the pressure from the insurance company. Of course, once the pictures get on the net they'll always be out there.

well the drive train, engine, and wheels are still good probably. Some guy can use that as a donor vehicle, or take saws all to the top of that FJ and put in a nice roll cage.
That guy is lucky.... That truck got pulverized
