2/14/12 WHEELS PAINTED see my most recent post in the thread for pics

Just got back from Seattle. Flew over this morning to pick this bad boy up. Figured i would post some pics and its current state. Big thanks to Dumpolina on here for selling me this awesome truck.

I plan on taking the fam all over the western part of the US in this rig, small trips at a time when I have time to take leave at work.

Electric locking rear differential

Future Mods: Camburg UCA's

Steel rear bumper with Tire swing out and space for 3 jerry cans and hi lift jack, sliders and skids will all be fabbed shortly.

in dash stereo, and a rear TV screen for the kiddos. Tint the windows, FJ Cruiser TRD 16" wheels in black Or Rota Grid Offroad rims with 285/75/16 Duratracs or MTR's when these KM's wear out. I'd also like to get a CB and HAM in the rig

More lighting. Dog barrier (I have 2 Siberian huskies) to separate the cargo area as well as a built in drawer storage system for the bottom of the cargo area. a decent sounding exhaust, and hopefully somewhere down the line a TRD S/C install! Maybe a complimentary trailer build to go along, but most of the big money items won't be for a long while

Those are the ultimate goals for it hopefully I can get a decent chunk of those done this year. The suspension upgrade will probably be last.

Plus I've got my 2 toddler Recaro car seats sitting in it! lol
Here's some pics! I'll get the wheels painted tomorrow and hopefully have some updated pics soon

Really nice looking 'Surf. I think that's the Anthracite color--it looks great.

Do you really want to paint those wheels? The clear coat looks good in the pics and it looks excellent how it is. I imagine you want to paint them black? I definitely wouldn't if it were me.

02-11-2012, 04:03 PM
Indeed its the anthracite color (i love it, you don't see em that color all over around here)....On the wheels, I agree in the pics they look perfect. They do have some wear on the clearcoat up close though. I think even if i scotch guarded them and lightly sanded and sprayed a gloss silver with new clear it could look great and OEM as well. But I think I am going to to black for the time being. I can always change it if i don't like.

Thanks for the kind words

02-11-2012, 04:49 PM
I think even if i scotch guarded them

are you trying to waterproof your wheels???

02-11-2012, 04:58 PM
You are a lucky man. Enjoy!

02-11-2012, 05:51 PM
Awesome score! She looks ready for anything just the way it sits.

02-11-2012, 05:59 PM
are you trying to waterproof your wheels???

LOL, come on, you know he meant Scotchbrite!

Love the 4Runner. Anthracite is such a cool color, and that thing looks to be in great shape with low miles. Nice upgrades, as well.

Regarding the wheels - I've heard bad things about Plasti-dip... I say you buy a set of 16" steelies! It's so easy to spend someone else's money.

02-11-2012, 11:26 PM
Lmao, yes i meant scotchbrite....But scotchguard would be cool too hah j/k! Thanks for catching that.

I Don't want to invest in some steelies as I am trying to save up for some TRD FJ wheels, I was just trying to improvise for the time being.
Anyways, its raining today so instead of painting the wheels I decided to gather up the family and make a little journey for about 4 hours

We went to do some exploring on the Old Oregon Trail and Bennett Mountain near Mountain home.

Had the kids, and had noone else to go with so we kept it pretty mild and tried to stay away from the snow.

Nice lookin' rig. I wish I could find a set of those roof rack rail fillers.

02-14-2012, 11:11 PM
got the wheels done, last night and this morning had to do 2 at a time due to lack of jack stands. didn't spend an Abundant amount on them, but quick sand down, 2 coats primer, 2 coats semi gloss black, 2 coats clear.

going to be ordering some aftermarket wheels soon! But for the meantime this is 10x better imo

Sorry for the crappy cell phone shots. will be taking it out wheeling later this week and will try to get some better ones.

02-16-2012, 10:16 PM
Went out on some dirt roads today for a snow picnic. Had to get some poser pics while I was at it. Swaybars are all still attached. Also confirms my need for a rear bumper lol. I probably could have gone a little farther before one of the tires lifted off the ground, but I'm a noob so that's as far as I went. :)

02-17-2012, 07:47 AM
No one told you about the index card trick (http://www.tacomaworld.com/gallery/data/500/medium/r4.JPG), huh? ;) The stock tow hitch definitely is a hindrance. Check out my style rear bumper; pretty easy to make if you have some tools available. There's probably $250 in materials and it would compliment your front ARB well.

02-17-2012, 12:18 PM
Nice looking ride. The wheels turned out nice. Thanks for sharing.

i've been going through your build thread, your truck looks great. i like how the ARB is color matched.
I'll be fabbing up some sliders, skids, and a rear bumper here shortly. The rear bumper will probably have a jamboree rack so that i can remove the jerry cans and rear swingout when I'm not wheeling to keep the weight down.

I really like your lock box that you did, as well as your rear storage. I'm wanting to do a similar storage and basically make the top flush with the wheel wells that way my dogs have an even surface to sit on.

02-22-2012, 03:48 PM
Congrats on the Yota. A nice clean looking rig.

02-22-2012, 11:46 PM
Truck looks great man! Lovin' the colour and the shiny black wheels!

02-23-2012, 10:33 PM
Glad to see another good looking 4Runner here in Idaho!

You would be surprised how much the rear will flex, even with the sway bar connected! Unless you have extended bump stops, installed with your lift, stop when you hear the driveshaft hitting the skid plate for the gas tank! ;-)

02-24-2012, 08:01 PM
That's a great 4runner! It makes me miss my 99 Limited. Some wheel spacers or 8" wide wheels with slightly more off set look better with the massive fender flares on the limited. Good to see you're making good use of the truck.

Lucky you! Grant let you keep the NWOS badge, they are rare and that one is in great shape!!! Enjoy the rig you have a great rig for your growing family. Wished you could have made it to the Everett meet and greet.

02-27-2012, 12:21 AM
Lol, someone actually PM'd me about the NWOS badge the other day. The picture that I have posted with the badge attached was a pic he had in his FS add. After the member on here pm'd me i had to run out to see what he was talking about. Needless to say it wasn't there :(

Would have been nice to stay in town for that long, but I had to venture onto the long drive back home.

I've got some plans for some wheels or spacers in the future, not sure which I will do. More armor (sliders/skids/rear bumper) will be done next time I visit AZ. Not sure how much more I can do after that for a while though

05-26-2012, 06:29 AM
Long time no update I suppose....Nothing new done to the rig other than basic maintenance. Oil change, check air pressure, clean filter, windshield wipers, a few baths and overall enjoying it. Side note: I am selling one of my DD cars this week (the only vehicle that i make payments on) so that will clear up a lot more funds to put in savings and upgrades.

I've only got about 4 months left in Idaho, so i'm pretty excited to get back to AZ and take it around down there. (huge bummer that crown king has been on fire the past couple weeks, and all the other fires down there)

Thought that I would keep the thread alive and update with some more pics! Seeing as I have a 1yr old and 3yr old, this spring we have mainly been trying to acclimate them to our little safaris in the middle of nowhere. We plan on doing a few overnight camping trips this summer so these 4-6 hours rides have been great in getting them used to it.

Last weekend we went up to Silver City (old mining town/ghost town) just to see the area and enjoy the pines. Also headed over to Castle Rock and Anderson Dam, where we enjoyed views of the solar eclipse. We ended up driving all together probably 150 miles all off pavement in the 2 separate days

Nice 4runner I belive ive seen you around Mountin Home we should meet up some time and hit some local trails. idaxj97

06-17-2012, 01:03 AM
I think I've seen your jeep on American Legion once or twice before...not positive though. How often do you go out and run some trails? You go with many people?
I'm definitely interested in tagging along/meeting up to hit some trails over the next few months before i move back to AZ! Nice to see some other local people on here

06-17-2012, 07:18 PM
I try to get out as much as i can but with getting married here in less than a month its kinda slowed trail rides down a bit, i try to get a group together and go out and explore, im trying to get a group together to go up on a camping trip to boulder basin which is up past sun vally around the end of july if you would like to come with.

06-17-2012, 08:40 PM
did you notice any fuel economy changes when you put the warn hubs on the front?

06-17-2012, 09:14 PM
I bought the rig with the warn hubs already installed. Apparently it is supposed to help increase mpg1-2but I still average 17 on about every tank. Idk it my heavy mud terrains have an affect vs at tires. I do appreciate not having the front cvs constantly moving when unlocked though! It should help with wear

08-05-2012, 09:11 AM
Went out to a retired Rock Quarry down here in Mtn Home just to mess around for about an hour or so. I got a new camera so with little time to really learn anything I just went out with it on Full Auto and uploaded them straight to here without any editing. Wish I could have found some more things out there to get some more suspension flex. I couldn't get a wheel in the air for anything! (and I tried lol)
I plan on learning a lot more to make better use of the Camera, but figured might as well go bust out a couple dozen pics. (and a few hundred more back at home of the kids and dogs lol)

Couple of new things here in the new future. got a CB radio coming in the next couple of weeks. Hoping to do some more interior/exterior lighting and my sliders will be on as soon as I get down to Phoenix in October. 2 D-rings up front and a hitch adapted one in the rear. Also going to rhino line the plastic cladding and flares as they are getting destroyed on the narrow trails.

I really wish there was some aftermarket out there for larger fuel tanks. I hate only having a 230 mile range. I know there's stuff that can be done, but not just a simple bolt in kit.

08-05-2012, 11:49 PM
what is your average mpg in the current setup?

08-06-2012, 12:22 AM
I feel like it's terrible. but people on T4R seem to average either similar to me (15.5-16mpg) or higher @ around 19-20. I know the mud terrains are kind of heavy, the winch and bumper don't help, nor does the 3" lift but I am hoping to figure out a way to bump it up to closer to 20. When these tires wear down I'm going to get all terrains, but they will be 285/75 so that will be a wash I'm guessing.
However I'm also moving back to Phoenix in October so the lower elevation along with flatter terrain when I commute places may help my MPGs. I'm thinking about doing a Cat-back exhaust with a Cat delete and maybe replace the plugs and wires to see if that helps.

She runs like a champ, and I never expected to get wonderful gas mileage with her, but it would really be nice to have a range of 300 miles without fuel cans

08-07-2012, 07:43 PM
Gorgeous 4runner! Especially the color.

Regarding your fuel milage/range: Do you know what gears you have? Are you anticipating better economy with a cat delete? My experience is that on newer vehicles a cat delete doesn't generally do a whole lot for you, unless of course its massively clogged. I have however had good luck with a complete replacement free flowing exhaust with a high flow cat. Factory bends are often very kinked at the corners, and some serious flow can be gained with a well built and bent exhaust. i will be watching your mpg progress as i will be swapping my 3.91 axles for 4.30's when i get home and am hoping for decent milage when coupled with my 265 duratracs.

08-08-2012, 04:53 AM
I have 4.30 gears. I am not anticipating better economy from cat delete alone, but what I am banking on (which you kind of elaborated on in your post) is that the factory cat now 15 years old w/125k miles may have seen better days and could be restricting some flow. I would go with a high flow cat, but it will save me a couple hundred bucks to just have the exhaust tubing begin there and mandral bend it back to the muffler (and hopefully eliminating those kinks you mentioned)
I've put an aftermarket intake/exhaust at minimum in every vehicle i've owned and usually net a ~2mpg increase. However, with as much off pavement driving I do I will only change the intake filter at most, and maybe clear up some of the restrictions inside the factory tubing. Still going to retain the factory air box.

I have been eyeing the duratracs. I think that could help my MPGs as well due to how light those specific tires are in comparison to my muds. Rotational mass is probably killing me....all in all, really just guesses on my part. It won't be the end of the world for me if I'm stuck with these mpg's but I can always try to improve! I think just moving back down closer to sea level in AZ with flatter roads will help quite a bit!

thanks for the kind words about the rig BTW :D

welp, its been a long time since I've posted in this thread. I really haven't done much to the rig over the last year. Just enjoyed the crap out of it.

It is currently down for some maintenance at the moment. I am replacing the rear axle seals, all of the wheel bearings, the CV boots, brakes, and upgrading from my 32" tires on 16" rims to 285/70 on 17" Tacoma wheels.

I should be done in about 2 weeks and I'll post some updated pictures of the bigger meats, and hopefully some wheeling activities!
She did get a new roommate to share the garage and wheeling duties with :D
