After quite some time planning and the last two months underneath the truck, we're finally getting close to finishing up our expedition build.

I've learned tons of information on this site, so I thought I would share what I'm up to with you guys!

Leaving towards the end of March, we are going on a multi-month expedition throughout the US, Canada and hopefully up to Alaska. On this trip, we are stopping off at a number of national parks, 4x4 events and even being FEATURED at the Overland Expo in May.

This is an offroad trip, so once we leave the east coast, most of the trek is offroad (agenda still to be finalized)

I'm not online as much as I used to b/c i'm literally under the truck 8+hrs/day, but I'll try to respond as much as possible.

Here are the plans for the vehicle:

O2Tahoe your rig was my inspiration for this build!! Just wait until next week and I think you will see what I mean :)

The amount of work has been hectic, but its been an incredible learning experience!

As an example, my AC compressor went out last week so as I'm finally done installing the new parts, evacuating the system, etc etc it finally becomes time to hook up the new gas into the system...my buddy's bottle runs empty. I run out to Advance Auto, buy two cans and then we hook them up...not enough pressure in the can to fill the system!!! (tomorrow we check out other options)

Stebel Electric truck horn...I'm not sure on your NBS, but on my OBS, the wire running to the OEM horn was green. I simply ran a relay to the new horn, tapped the OEM and instant awesome horn. It's not obnoxiously loud, but definitely gets people attention.

Thanks Cal!

If it wasn't for my cousin helping me every step of the way this would not be possible; he's an electricity guru and really good with a wrench. When i first started this, it seemed extensive on paper, but it wasn't until i started installing and modifying that i realized what a huge task I had ahead of me for such a short time.

I'm pumped to see this done and finally get going!

The updated MPFI injector conversion is worth every penny, but why is there a 2" hole in the bottom of the intake?

I cut it out to flow more air :)

I'm still in learning mode so i'm not really sure what that hole is...

Thanks guys, I will definitely keep taking photos of the build and once the exploration gets underway I'll post links to our webpage.

Today is finding a way to charge the new AC system and starting to rebuild the drums from the 14bolt.

The other night I was up to 11:30p POR'ing the underside of the trailer and it came out pretty good! (photos to follow)

A few quick updates for everyone following.

Finished prepping and POR'ing the 14bsf - now I'm waiting for my Wagner severe duty shoes and I'll rebuild the drums and bend up some new brake lines.

After installing the new system, evacuating and filling with refrigerant...the high pressure relief valve went south...and I had to do it all over again!

I also installed a new idler pulley today and fixed my hi beam HIDs!

i finally was able to upload some more progress photos...so here we go!!

Can anyone guess what may go in here? (i cut and grinded the heck out of it...came out pretty clean IMO)
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8565.jpg

On to the venerable 14 bolt and Alcan springs.

If you are going to replace your springs, plan on dropping your tank. I decided in my infinite wisdom that if I cut all the old bolts, it would piece of cake...wrong!

There is one bolt that butts up against the gas tank that once you cut the head off, it falls in between the frame and gas tank. The head of the bolt is bigger then the opening in the frame, so you can't simply grab a magnet and pull it out...also, these are grade 8 bolts, so unless you want to spend hours with a Sawzall, grab a grinder and go to town

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8566.jpg - 10bolt stripped and ready to come out
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8571.jpg - got it out nice and easy! I had new ubolts, so this part was actually pretty simple

This is where it gets painful...spring removal...it took me over a day to get these out b/c I didn't drop the tank and had to run to home depot twice for bigger cutting blades
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8574.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8572.jpg - i did this at about 11p when I saw it was going to take hours of squirming to cut the bolt

New springs in - really easy - I installed with the head of bolt facing out
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8577.jpg

14 bolt in - POR'd it and with that ridiculous thick BlueFab diff cover, this thing is beefy
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8583.jpg

The RCX shocks are in the rear (white in the photo) as I wait for a bracket for my rear 5150's...sadly, the front 5150's are no valved heavy enough for this truck, so i'm ordering 5100's tonight

The driveshaft is also in, tomorrow is some buttoning up and then I go to pick up my new rear bumper!

The venerable 14bolt is in and so far so good!! I only ran the truck on jack stands, but tomorrow it's road tested.

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8585.jpg

The 14bsf mod is a piece of cake if you are retaining the stock springs...but i definitely was slowed down by mine.

This thing looks awesome under the truck! I POR'd it (dont mind the spots i missed) and it looks really clean under the truck.

I also painted the drums and any visible rust on the frame... (this photo was taken before I touched up all the rust)

This mod I'm actually pretty excited about and recommend to folks that if they wheel, copy this!

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8581-1.jpg

This is my 100% Cycle Duty VIAIR 450H. If you want to run a tank, they make a pump with an auto shutoff...the "H" is not designed for use with tanks, but with a little ingenuity, it easily could.

We essentially purchased two brackets from Home Depot and with self taping screws, drilled into the body. To reduce vibration when this thing is on, rubber sealing material (roofers use it - see the shiny material on the fender), was placed on parts that have metal to metal contact. You will also see there are rubber grommets on the screws that mount the pump to the black mounting plate.

I also purchased the mounting bracket specifically for this pump and it made installation a piece of cake. You can tug on the pump and it doesn't budge.

From a wiring perspective, this will be wired directly to a relayed switch in our center console. The air line will run from the pump to a quick disconnect that will be mounted on the custom rear bumper.

Also, b/c this rig will go through water, I siliconed the heck out of the parts of the screws that went through the metal interior to the outside.

for my spare (33"), I had a tire carrier incorporated into a bumper i had made.

I was told a tire on top can drag 0.5 - 1.0mpg off your average, so I put it on the back...i also think it looks cool :)

i just mounted the bumper but don't have pics yet...i'll get them up within the next few days.

I went with Tactical Armor Group....but even though they fixed it in the end (had to send out a second one), it was painful experience. The first one was built incorrectly and the owner immediately offered a correct replacement at his cost (great service). When i sent him photos of how poorly built the first one was (poor welds, painted over welding slag, sealant smear, crooked mounts), he became really sarcastic and unpleasant to work with. I was very professional with him throughout and never raised my voice, so to be treated with sarcasm and such difficultly was uncalled for. I only highlight that so if you go the route of TAG/Kennessaw Mountain, definitely do some searches online to see what you're getting into.

On a positive note - I received the second one a few days ago and the overall build quality increased dramatically. I requested a more senior builder take on my bumper and he must have done it b/c everything I had issues with was fixed.

So, this is a not a "stay away" warning, but if you order from TAG, call them up with your order and discuss expectations for overall build quality before your order. One word of warning is that they place sealant on top of all their welds!!! My first bumper had it (the stuff was smeared everywhere) and I requested for the second bumper that no sealant was placed on the welds. When I chipped away the sealant (first bumper), I found welds that were not prepped correctly (brown & white residue below it) and quality was deplorable...

Second bumper - no sealant and much better welding. Also, they do not put a grinder to their welds...I personally like nice clean seams, but as a practice they leave them raw.

Going out of order a little bit today, but here are pics from the RCX install we completed last month.

The good - fit and finish were solid and directions were spot-on

The bad
- NO WAY CAN YOU INSTALL IN 8hrs - two guys who have done this before on a Tahoe with air tools and a hydraulic lift could not bang this out in 4hrs (2 guys x 4hrs each). My recommendation, start Friday evening and hope you are done by dinner on Sunday...our rigs are not spring puppies, you will run into rusty suspension bolts and some are a beast to remove.

- My front anti sway bar kept banging into my tie rods after install - you will have to seriously consider if you want to remove your front sway bar, b/c bending a tie rod is not an option.

- Order longer brake lines from the front & back; RCX has this ridiculous solution for rebending your brake lines - bad idea - don't do it! I didn't have the lines on me so I carefully rebent the lines and the rubber lines are still fully stretched when my wheel drops all the way...I received my Skyjacker extended brake lines this week and they're going in next week.

Quick tips:
When doing this lift, it's a great time to replace your pitman/idle arm/idler arm bracket. These parts wear on our rigs and you're taking apart the entire front end anyway, so spend the extra hour or two and put in some new hardware. I also recommend replacing your upper & lower ball joints - again, these parts wear and you're taking apart the front end anyway. I do have one precaution though, all of this takes up a lot of time, if you need your rig for work on Monday and you haven't completed this type of work before, don't do it...same the extras for another day so you're not stranded.

This lift requires a LOT of tools. Download their install directions online prior to ordering and make sure you can get your hands on this many tools if you don't already own them. I would also seriously recommend you have an air gun to assist you b/c manually doing all of this would be exhausting and a number of these bolts may be seized from rust. Definitely have a least one friend helping you out...there's a lot of work to be done and an extra set of hands is invaluable; especially for resetting the torsion bars and front differential.

Ok, off my soap box - on to the photos

Here's where we did the install...I got really lucky that someone in my family has a commercial garage attached to their house
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8249.jpg

First up - new torsion bars from Sway A Way (http://www.swayaway.com/) - these are huge compared to OEM and very little preload is needed to set the suspension up. B/c I'm going to have an extra 350lbs off the front (winch + bumper + battery), I decided to try these bars as they are much stiffer then OEM.

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8236.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8235.jpg

FFR Fabrication (http://go.ffrfabrication.com/Tie_Rods.php) made these for me and I have to say, the craftsmanship is superb. These guys are well know for tie rods ends in the NBS community, so I called them up and they made these special for my OBS. These tie rod ends are leagues ahead of OEM and I seriously recommend them for anyone that offroads

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8238.jpg
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8240.jpg

For anyone running the np246 transfer case (it has the Auto 4wd pushbutton), you will need to order the custom driveshaft from RCX - if you don't, you will have vibrations while engaged in 4wd. I was a little skeptical of what RCX was going to send, but I have to say, this front driveshaft is incredibly well made. It's perfectly balanced and a serious beast of a driveshaft with a high end joint that allows greater articulation

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8243.jpg

Also, for folks with rear sway bars (4dr Tahoes + Subs), you will need the longer drop down links for your rear anti sway bar.

Most IFS lift require cutting/grinding/etc - the Tahoe going under the knife by one of the guys helping out
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8248.jpg

Keep a rattle can available and you can make most of your old rusty parts look pretty new; I also painted the frame and IMO, it looks great
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8252.jpg

Shot of the IFS completed!
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t117/sparg93/IMG_8260.jpg

In terms of overall lift, I'm up 4.5" in the rear (Alcan Springs - no blocks), and about 5" up in the front. I just ordered z71 bump stops and i'm hoping that b/c these are smaller then non-Z71 rigs, I can lower the front 0.5".

Once the new bump stops are in, I'll take a photo on level ground to show everyone the new stance!

those bars are nice and they allow multiple adjustment points due to their splined ends...give sway a way a call and tell them your needs ( i think you have 54" bars - but not 100% sure), if they don't have them in stock, they can have them made.

How does your rig ride now? Does the front end sag and/or your torsion bars are completely maxed out?

According to SWAY AWAY 's web site they have discontinued chevy/gmc torsion bars.

Chevy/GMC OEM torsion bars can be had in capacities far greater than needed in most applications. While I have not raised my suspension when up-fitting my Suburban the stock torsion bars that my diesel Burb came with are 1 ton so change out not required.

When I ordered I spoke to them about the "discontinued" part on their website bc they actually have them in stock or can have them made...they have a few in stock and it only takes a few wks for them to make a set if needed; calling them up may also get you discount b/c it appears they're not selling a ton of them :)

You are correct - what's nice about the burbs is that can you upgrade to the heavier OEM tbars; I would imagine you will also need the keys. If your tbars are maxed out and the front is sagging, you can also try re-indexing your OEM set for more preload and that may solve the problem.

I like the overall design, nice and beefy bumper. I have to swap out my EGR valve today (electrical short in the unit) and start wiring up my dual battery setup (Group 34 Sears Platinum Marine)...when my 5th tire/wheel combo comes in and I mount it on the bumper, I'll take some photos!!

I actually dont have any issues now, front end doesnt sag, and i have the bars on their stock adjustment. I have a 3/4 ton so im guessing the torsion bars would be a little heavier which is why they didnt feel the 400 lbs much

Yes, the 3/4t bars are stiffer. The best part about tbars is that if the extra weight starts sagging your front end, you can simply crank them to stiffen them up...this of course is within reason as they will eventually start to sag again, but it may not be for awhile. In your setup, it sounds like all is good!

For some reason, mine wore pretty quickly (w/o the extra weight) so I decided to dump them and go heavier since I was only going to put even more strain on the bars with the bumper and winch i'm adding.

some more progress over the past few days...

The Bilstein 5150's with their heavier valving were simply not valved heavy enough for this rig. So I went with application specific 5100's (they're for lifted rigs) and they are awesome.

I had them on the highway today and they absorbed bumps nicely but still gave a nice tight feel. I actually like the 5100's more then the Bilstein HD's I had on the rig before it was lifted...a little bit softer so the ride isn't as rough.

We also installed a new EGR valve a few days ago b/c simply cleaning the EGR didn't work (electrical short).

Tomorrow is mostly transmission stuff working with the install of a larger cooler and swapping out the tranny fluid.

Some BIG updates this week.

Yesterday I received my package from Viking Offroad - photos to follow tomorrow! This is the highest quality recovery gear I have ever seen, I'm blown away from the fit & finish so far of everything. This gear is our lifeline for when we need recovery, so i will post a review on everything throughout and at the end of this trip...but from what I've heard, their gear is all top of the line.

ARB bumper arrives on Friday and custom center console should be here early next week!!

Last week I finished installing my rock sliders. To test them, we lifted the truck on a auto lift just by the sliders.... and they didn't budge..these things are beasts.

Also, the final date for departure is the 10th (next week). It took a lot longer to finish this rig then we thought, but it's almost done.

Tomorrow I will have lots more photos for everyone!

Ok, tons of photos folks!

Here is the new stance of the rig! 4.5" lifted in the rear (springs, no blocks) and ~5" lift up front. IMHO this stance looks awesome and with a 35" tire, it would look incredible (i have 33's on)

Once the ARB bumper is on with the Superwinch, I'm guessing it will drop ~ 0.5" and sit more level.

Group 34 battery, Sears PLatinum Marine edition - has the same CCA as the auto, but quad terminals on top...I have this as my secondary truck battery and another one in the trailer. The group 34 fits perfectly and has a higher reserve then the group 78's

I got really luck with this part - my 14bsf did not have a tab for the e-brake and Dave (@ Crum's Welding) was installing the rock sliders he built when he made a quick bracket and welded it on...perfect fit

Some photos of the rock sliders. These are amazing and can literally hold the weight of our rigs. If you go this route, one side you can easily bolt on (use Grade 8 hardware), but the other you will have to weld unless you want to drop the tank.

Ok guys, out first site is up and running and I'd like to invite everyone here to follow us. In the next few days I'll have the digital map up which tracks our rig via satellite (SPOT connect)

Also, there will be a few youngsters watching us via facebook, so please keep the commentary on the fb page appropriate :)

I'll definitely keep posting on this forum throughout the expedition...so always feel free to ask questions and comment!!

Loving the build!

Thanks Chris!

Some toys came in this week! I called up Viking Offroad (www.vikingoffroad.com) a few weeks ago and was lucky enough to grab the owner. I had lots of questions b/c I was still pretty weak on my recovery gear and wasn't sure what to go with. We had a long discussion for the type of rig I had and what I planned on doing with it, my budget and then he put together a sick package for me based on his recommendation.

I had always heard of Viking Offroad's infamous quality and their synthetic cable being the best in the industry...but I was seriously blown away by everything when it came in - it's all top notch. I know a few guys that have run their cable for years and swear by it. Once i use this stuff in the field, I'll def post up some videos.

I went with their 3/8" synthetic line w/thimble (17k lb capacity), 3/8" synthetic extension, 3/4" Van Beast Shackles, Trasharoo, synthetic repair kit and some other odds and ends.

With all of us running IFS (Independent Front Suspensions), one of the big pushes for me upgrading to synthetic winch line was the 30lb savings on my front end; not to mention this stuff is much safer then steel cable.

Some really good news and updates!

We left NJ @ 4am on the 15th and drove like mad to reach Flagstaff AZ by the 17th...and we made it. We first camped out in St Louis, then in New Mexico. The first leg was really long...we stopped around 2:30am local time as neither of us were in any condition to drive further.

Even though we hauled across many states, the scenery was amazing and the trip was a lot of fun.

I was at about 3k miles on my synthetic oil when I left NJ so I knew I needed an oil change along the way. After sleeping in New Mexico, the gentleman running the KOA site pointed me towards a small town on old Rt 66 that had two auto shops. I went to the first and they did not have full synthetic oil, went to the second, same story. So, I found a Napa store, bought the oil and filter I wanted and drove back to the second shop...and for $15, he changed my oil. Really friendly guys and they let me borrow a wrench to tighten a leaky valve on one of my calipers and even did a quick one over on the truck for me...this town was almost exactly like the movie Cars...very cool experience.

On the road right outside Oklahoma - over the next few days, you WILL see more equipment on this rig. We ran out of time and bought a few boxes of parts with us.

Our first destination was the Overland Expo in Flagstaff. We were a Feature Vehicle there and the ONLY chevy in the group...let alone a Tahoe. The reception to our build was pretty amazing and three guys from other Chevy forums stopped by to check us out!

For anyone thinking of building an Expedition ("Overland") style rig, I highly recommend going to the expo next year.

Enough of my rambling, here are some pics from the Expo

This rig is a GREAT platform for overlanding within the US/Canada....for this trip we're close to 4k miles and I haven't come across terrain I was not able to handle (within reason of course). It's a very comfortable cruiser and overall I'm really excited about how it turned out.

It's been awhile since I've had wifi access, but I'm hoping to put some big updates together for the last 1.5wk of traveling we did.

Some highlights:
-We parked/camped on the RIM of the Grand Canyon for three days and wheeled/hiked each day (amazing)...check out "Crazy Jug" on the north rim and you will know what i mean
- Slept in the valley of a canyon (high clearance 4x4 only access) two nights ago and the scenery was beyond breathtaking
- Did a bunch 10%+ grades off road with the trailer and it handled like a dream, but we had to shut it down x2 in one day due to engine and tranny temps getting too high
- We've met tons of incredible ppl in the middle of nowhere with some incredible stories (check out Gooseneck State Park in UT), we slept on the edge of the canyon there)

For the next two weeks we're in Moab UT - wheeling, hiking, swimming and possibly sky diving - so check in for some more updates coming soon!!

Some ppl have asked how the rig handles with a suspension lift, tires, armor etc etc. Legally, we've done 75mph with a 2500lb trailer and the truck drives like a dream...minimal vibrations, tracks straight as an arrow and suspension is just how I like it.

We've probably driven close to 500miles purely offroad (some really nasty stuff) and the alignment is still spot on.

Sooo....if you're wondering how a suspension lift will affect your rig....if you replace worn parts, grab a nice set of shocks, run your CV's at a comfortable angle, you can have a really nice handling and SAFE truck. My only gripe is that steering is a little soft after I removed the variable speed sensor so I could run a hydroboost setup...but with close to 9k lb at a steep angle going down a mtn pass, these brakes have been amazing.

The ARB bumper was for a big Land Cruiser. I worked with the owner of Liquid Iron Industries and we created mounts on his CNC. Fit was perfect with his mounts...I highly recommend giving him a call b/c I know he saved the specs and we specs hours figuring it out.

When I get back from the trip, we're going to raise the hoops b/c right now they're a little too low for my taste.

I have no idea why guys in the US don't rig their tahoes/burbs for expedition use. THe platform is truly amazing IMHO and I have done some really crazy trails with this thing over hundreds of miles....and she never hesitates....big engine, comfortable ride, etc. I've towed that trailer offroad in 20%+ grades, all in 2wd and the truck never stuttered.

And to expo these rigs out, you really don't need to do much work other then body armor and a good limited slip or locker in the rear (the OEM G80 is garbage and WILL wear out)

Awesome rig and I'm enjoying your pics and videos a lot.

I've often thought a Tahoe would be perfect for me in many ways... if only there was a 2500 version with the 9.25" IFS and the 9.5" rear. I've been worried about how well the 8.25" IFS would last and also Tahoe's are a little expensive around my way. Looks like you've done a great job strengthening the IFS and working out custom solutions to make up for the limited after market options available.

Obviously the 9.5" SF 14 Bolt gives you some security on hard core trails, especially since you are towing. Then again, the trade off is weight and an inch or so of lost minimum ground clearance. Did you consider sticking with the 10-bolt rear given that you're only running 33"s with a limited slip (admittedly, this is probably the upper end of what one might reasonably expect out of a 10-bolt)? I'm not at all suggesting that you shouldn't have upgraded, I'm just curious as to your thought process.

Thanks and safe travels.

I personally could not find a space large enough under the hood to mount that compressor. For me, grinding out that space in the trunk was perfect...it fit like a glove and I was able to run a dedicate hose out the body and through the bumper. Everything is hidden for me (except the quick disconnect coming out of the bumper) and I have the air pump switch built into my 12volt guy panel.

To reduce vibration when the pump is on, all the screw mounts have rubber on them and I insulated the area with roofing rubber (cheap stuff). Also, if you plan on running an air tank, the spot where your spare tire is (or used to be) is a great spot for mounting a tank safely out of the way.

If you remind me next week (truck is at my brother's house right now), I'll take some photos of the setup.

That would be great. My plan for where the spare used to go is for a fuel tank from a 2 door Tahoe to be used as a transfer-style tank. There is some space forward of the axle that I think I can run a small tank or two. Actually, I thought of this but need to crunch some numbers to see if it will actually work, is behind the rear quarter panels. I think they might have enough room to hold a 2-gallon tank or so.

A thought, I suggest using fuel cells w/bronze wool inserts to prevent an explosion in quarter panel areas if impacted hard enough as there is no real impact protection there.

Boy howdy I didn't word that right:yikes:

I had two thoughts going on there, one was for the transfer tank idea where the spare was, something like fellowtravellers setup, have a low-amp high-volume pump to transfer fuel from the secondary tank into the factory main tank when it gets empty, and put the filler neck somewhere like the wheelwell.

The other idea about putting tanks in the quarter panels was for the on board air system. I think a little 2 gallon tank could fit, and with some serious framing around it, would be reasonably safe from impacts. Though I think in front of the axle would still be smarter.

Spargman
08-30-2012, 10:24 PM
ahh...now I get what you're saying!

Personally (and this is just me), I would scrap the 2 gallon transfer tank idea and grab a portable tank and put it on the roof. It would take me such a long time to fabricate everything and then the wiring for the pump, etc etc...I would just buy a good portable and throw it on the roof.

If you ever go the route of a custom rear bumper, you can put as many as x2 5gallon gas tanks there!

However, i do know a guy that did that with his Land Cruiser and was pretty happy with the install.

noJeepshere
08-30-2012, 11:14 PM
No, not a 2-gallon transfer tank, but a full size, 26-gallon 2-door Tahoe tank between the framerails! Then have a low-amp high-volume pump to transfer the fuel into the main tank.

No, not a 2-gallon transfer tank, but a full size, 26-gallon 2-door Tahoe tank between the framerails! Then have a low-amp high-volume pump to transfer the fuel into the main tank. You might find some ideas in my rig: BLT Offroad Avalanche (https://sites.google.com/site/bltoffroad/avalanche)

http://www.s-10crewcab.net/HenryJ/Avalanche/Tank/filler2.JPG

I found the Ford F150 tank fits really well and orients the filler neck in the right position. At 18 gallons It doesn't drop down as low as the other tanks that I checked.

http://www.s-10crewcab.net/HenryJ/Avalanche/Tank/tank9.JPG

The stock fuel pump works just fine for transferring fuel.
I use a Dakota Digital gauge that reads out in gallons. the transfer switch and an indicator LED right below it.

http://www.s-10crewcab.net/HenryJ/Avalanche/Tank/fuelgauge.JPG

Even in a worst case fuel mileage scenario, I have a 600 mile range :)

I have been fortunate to visit Moab twice. I met a friend from Kentucky and one from Brazil to do the White Rim Trail. Good times. My wise friend from Brazil had been there five times and said that was not enough. I agree.
We will return. I set no limit on the number of times...

I like that, even better, though I don't know if your filler door has more space behind it, I'll have to look. With my stock 30 (29.5) gallon tank and the extra 26 gallon tank, I'll have a total of 56 gallons, and at an average 16 (mostly highway) I'm looking at a range of 896 miles. That'll be nice.

That'll be nice.Mine has a combined capacity of 49 gallons. I can get as high as 18 mpg at times. The would be over 900 miles. I don't like to run under 1/4 in the main tank since the fuel is the cooling and lubrication for the fuel pump. I feel very comfortable filling at 400-600 miles. The nice part is being able to choose when you want to fill. I have been able to wait past a weekend price hike. It is painful to the wallet when it comes time to fill up, but the time between those sure helps.

I have to ask, how much does the extra tank lower the SUV?

I would assume not much, but then you know what they say when you assume

that seems a much better option than say 5 jerry cans

I loved my blue suburban and loved the torque of the 454 but the mpg was killing us on long trips. I had been looking for like 2 years to find a good diesel suburban, their damn near impossible to find around here. Its a 94 k2500 with the 6.5td and the 4l80e. The nice thing is its basically exactly like my last one same tranny, same body style, same rear end, etc.. but with the engine i wanted and 4.10 gears. I stripped everything off my blue one bumper, winch, lights, rack, all interrior stuff, etc.. and luckily since this one is the same body style everything will just be able to switch over. Im just going to probably make a new bumper for this one and sell my other one, just because i think i can make some improvements to the design this time.

Thanks guys!! I spent tons of times planning this build and then completing it...I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve (photos forthcoming) and some things I'm going to improve upon that I'm not thrilled with....but like all good things, it's a work in progress!!

As an aside, when you put a few bucks in your rig and customize, call up your insurance company and let them know. For all the money I put in my rig with custom parts and general modifications, it only cost me $75 more per year to insure everything.

Here are a few more pics of Utah...all Moab region. Moab is AMAZING to wheel and our rigs do really well there...why? Well, they have slick rock and there rocks are huge...essentially large enough for our entire trucks to drive up and down.

This is very different the a trail like the Rubicon which has small/medium bolders...in Moab, the mountains are the rocks you need to get over
This is the beginning of Fins & Things - a RED (hard) trail in Moab. The truck behind me WAS a Chevy Suburban. Check out Xtreme (http://www.facebook.com/#!/Xtreme4x4Tours) 4x4 Tours . This truck is the ONLY rig in Moab that will take passengers on the hardest trails in Moab...and it's a Chevy!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments!! I actually met at the Vermot Expo this weekend a Chevy guy from this forum - always love meeting ppl at the events!!

We decided to move quickly through Nevada, except for staying x2 days in Reno. In Reno this was the first time we grabbed a hotel room...our thoughts, when are we ever coming back here??
While doing research on the area, we did not come across too much info on great spots to wheel and explore. But while we were crossing through the state...which by the way, don't take Extraterrestrial Highway (there's nothing to see!!!) b/c it's VERY long and straight...we came across a number of locals that mentioned great places to wheel, caves to see, etc.
Unfortunately we had booked our rooms already so we had to make it there by nightfall...but if I was back in Nevada, I would definitely spend a few days there wheeling around b/c there were trails everywhere off the main roads.
At the photos below, we were crossing by a Naval Lake (I didn't know these existed) and there a hatching event going on. There must have been billions of bugs bc the air was so thick with them, it seemed like fog. We had to pull over twice in just a few miles to wipe them off the windshield b/c it was impossible to see!

Apologies for the long delay, here are some updated details and photos for everyone.

After Nevada, we arrived in Cali and the great little town of Chester. We were blown away by all the little things to do here - fishing, hiking, hot springs, etc.

Luckily, there was a network of logging roads near the town so we set up our base and stayed a few nights. One morning we came upon a Search & Rescue team training their dogs...very nice group of ladies

Some photos of the Rubicon Trail @ Lake Tahoe!!

This trail is amazing for anyone willing to attempt it. For a fullsize rig, I recommend 35's and at least a rear locker or LSD...plus tons of body armor. The entire trail is loaded with small through large boulders and for us big guys, it's slow going unless you don't mind body damage.

It's definitely one of the tougher trails we encountered and you will need a CB or HAM radio b/c there is no cell service and it seems like every year someone rolls off the trail and emergency services are required.

One of the buggies on the trail:

Yes, plenty, all are private land that were secured through leasing agreements with the land owners.

There are two that are quasi-public that I can provide you info for, but the locations are kept to a "who's who knows" simply to keep them open and protect them from over use and abuse. Here in the north east, it is nothing like out west.

That is certainly the tough part about the east....out west is 1,000's of miles of beautiful land to explore...here, it's either private or the state won't let you touch it.

Thank you Chevrolado!

There is a LONG list of items pending for this truck..so it's funny you ask! In addition to the mechanical listed below, i'll be going to events up and down the east coast throughout the year and wheeling trips of course. But in terms of a long run, nothing for '13 unfortunately...unless I can squeak out a trip just to Moab for a few weeks.

Truck/Mechanical Related
- larger tranny cooler & modify front mounts
- tcase - new bearings, pump steel protector
- tcase body armor
- install new Napa Gold CV's
- Tbar relocators + truck cross member
- all new fluids
- finish modifying ARB bumper (hoops + lights)

Misc
- new pure sine inverter
- rear drawer system
- some form of a divider between trunk & cab
- LED interior

haha...check out this thread I created regarding that Rear Bumper in a Product Review category...if there are two words that sum up Tactical Armor Group, it's STAY AWAY!

http://www.gmc4x4.com/topic/888-tactical-armor-group-kennesaw-mountain/

I take negative reviews very seriously especially of small business owners b/c I'm a big believer in supporting them, esp US based.

I was bummed when I read all of the negative reviews on them as I was interested in them for my 05 Suburban. I ended up going with Ranch Hand but still need to have a swing out added.

I bypassed Death Valley last year (no way in June) and 9hrs makes sense.

Yeah, a trip would be perfect. I'm thinking of spending a bit of time in Moab, but like anything...finances & free time are driving this decision.

This is a build thread after all...so I'll take a brief departure from trip photos to show some recent updates to the Tahoe

After swamping the truck in a mud hole in Maine, just about every breather tube took on mud & water. The most vital for me to change out was the transmission fluid. I've been wanting a serviceable pan for quite some time, so I found one with the deep dish option. To properly service the transmission, I had a shop hook their machine up to the aux tranny lines and flush the system using Dex VI fluid and NO CLEANING agent. After 1k miles+, tranny runs like it always had...no problems!

The rock sliders were rusting on the tops (from stepping on) them and numerous rock strikes (bottom). I used a simple rattle can of black and it came out pretty good. But I need a better solution b/c the paint hasn't lasted long and I really don't have a lot of interest in repainting them every few months

I also installed this massive 12k GVWR radiator (AC Delco) that was originally intended for the 7.4L K3500. I ended up having to fabricate new top mounting brackets and purchase the upper/lower shroud to clear the taller radiator. Otherwise all the cooler mounts were identical and it was fairly plug & play.

Get them powdercoated.. You'll have to do a little searching for someone local if you want to avoid shipping but you should be able to get them done for $100 or so. Well, at least as far as pricing goes in my area. That is going to be your best option for a durable finish.

Hey chili, thank you for the advice but I stay away from powdercoating on these types of parts b/c when it's scratched it would have to be redone versus touched up. With these parts sliding over rocks, it would tear right through the powder coat.

In that case I don't know of any other option that would not require the same.

Do those sliders work okay as steps? I like that style and I need to do something that will work as a step for the kids and the Mrs :ylsmoke: How about grip-tape (any skateboard shop) where the paint wears on the top?

They're ok as steps and I've had a lot of people get in/out without a problem. However, if you're not sure-footed, it can be dangerous b/c your foot can get stuck. I've seen some guys weld in a plate covering the gaps between the round bar and they reported it was a better step (something I will do one day when I have time).

Not a bad idea on the grip tape - that would definitely help and provide a better surface to step on!!! (i slipped on them the other day b/c they were icy)

Me neither :) . If I stayed with the painted surface theme, i've seen some really durable spray-on sealant for rims...i was thinking of spraying a clear coat of this protector over the tradition rattle black I have on them now.

Hot dip galvanizing would cure any rust issues and is extremely durable. You can paint it with the proper prep if you want, or powder coating works very well on top of galvanized. Advantage of having it galvanized is if you do scratch off some paint or PC it won't start rusting on you.

It's been awhile since I've updated the build thread!!

Over the last two weeks I installed a reman AC Delco steering pump and a new Moog pitman arm...for some reason the Moog pitman arm I had on there was shot in about 20k miles; idler was ok.

Also, the big improvement was....

Installed a set of Realift Torsion Bar Relocators - very cool product!!

Below is the link to an initial Product Review and next week I'll launch the How-To video for installing these:

Very nice!

I don't understand why more IFS lift kit manufacturers don't supply some sort of product like this with their kits. I never saw the point of lifting the suspension while leaving the torsion bars exposed and hanging down so low.

I completely agree. For guys that lift so they can 4wheel their trucks more, that cross member is a disaster to deal with.

Riley - are you staying IFS or eventually sticking a solid axle under it?

SAS all the way. For what I want to do (exploring mostly, but with more techincal trails thrown in) (and being able to get my axles crossed up in a gully fully loaded with a trailer) a solid axle with a selectable locker seems the only reasonable way to go. Simpler, tougher, stronger, and more options as far as lockers are concerned top the list of pros. Ride quality might suffer some, though I'm not sure, the front end hates the ditches here, and the rear end barely notices them, and the ifs is way too soft for my liking on the highway.

And I thought you would be one the guys to stick with IFS!! Swapping does make life a lot easier to four wheeling and I still consider it as an option on this Tahoe...even though I pumped a lot of hours and $$ into the IFS.

What shocks are you running that your IFS is too soft?

Yeah I was doing the price outlay for ifs and it would run me $2500 in the front end alone to get it how I wanted (good travel, locker, etc) and I would still be dealing with ifs. So to seperate it from the bro truck crowd and get what I want, sas seems the way to go. I'm running Rancho rs5000's on it and they're not enough to keep the front end from floating over bumps.

The more I dig into this IFS system, I agree, it would cost a ton of money to really beef it up. With that said, I still have some time with my IFS before I rip it out. It handles well and the strength has been fine for me...but I do wish I had the ability to lock it and articulation is limited.
