Good day all, and bare with me as I get my bearings on this site. I found this site while looking for 4x4 utility trailers!
The below post is copied and pasted from a reply to an already going thread "Post pictures of your 1st generation Montero/Pajeros". While posting and adding pics, some responded I should do a build thread...so here it is!
On way to Walmart one day with wife NOT looking to buy a new car, or an old one for that matter. Next door in Home Depot parking lot saw this Montero for sale...sign said $1,800. Called the number and bought on spot pretty much. All original, nothing had been replaced or swapped on this vehicle. 159k original miles, automatic V6 3.0, electric windows and locks, A/C and EVERYTHING WORKED. It had a miss in it, turned out the fuel injection wiring harness was corroded. Found replacement one in junkyard for FREE! Runs like a top now.
1st thing I did was get rid of old wheels and tires, purchased ULTRA GAUNTLET wheels and threw on some NITTO TERRA GRAPPLERS.
Next I replaced the interior carpeting and re-upholstered the seats in leather and added heated front seat elements. Works like a charm. I have posted some before and after pics! (I say that assuming I will figure out how to post the pics!)
It has some rust around rear wheel wells and windshield frame. Recently it began letting rain in around top of windshield and it was running down the front pillars. So...into the body shop to get all rust removed and new paint on it...that just went in today 3/6/12. I will post pics as the progress happens.
I just ordered a snorkel, one could not be found in the states and had to come from ARB Australia...go figure.
I also had specially cut diamond plate to cover the rockers and, ready for this twist???? I am adding diamond plate to the right and left side of the hood much like you would see on a Land Rover Defender and I also ordered a shovel and pick axe mount kit to mount them to the hood much like a Defender. Axe, Shovel and Shovel mount kit arrived from Rover North but Axe mount kit is on back order.
I want to give this a full on Safari/Expedition look.
Monty is all white now, would love to paint it that Jeep NATO Brown/Sand color, but way too much time/money/effort to make it worth the while...sooooo, it will be repainted white BUT...the ROOF will be a flat black and the HOOD will be a flat black.
$1800 purchase + $3200 interior up grades + $4500 exterior work + $1,000 mechanical + $1,000 transmission work = $11,500 so far and not done. $4500 exterior hasnt been paid yet as they just begun and could go higher! OUCH
I will not pretend to be a gear head, as I am not...so with that said, I am looking to retool the suspension and anything else on the under belly of the beast. Recommendations and advise would be greatly appreciated!!
I will post pics from when I purchased it to where it is now and as new things are done to it along the way. Thanks for any interest and advice you may show and offer along the way!
First pic is of day I bought it.
Second pic is after adding wheels and tires
The others are of the original interior...not bad for an 20+ year old vehicle

I took it a local upholstery shop and they did excellent work...here are a few pics of the new carpet and leather seats, on the center console is the mounts for the 2 front seat leather heating element switches

The vehicle was a Colorado truck its whole live until 2 years ago. Couple moved to Kansas City and after 2 years decided to move back to Colorado and sold the Montero. During it's 2 years here, it began to rust around windshield frame and rear wheel wells. Our city uses salt and it DESTROYS cars finishes!! The front grill area and hood had many rust spots from rock dings. The grill was originally chrome with chrome headlight moldings. I searched from Florida, to Maine, to Washing and California looking for replacement grill and headlight moldings in black...one thing I will say, parts for these are IMPOSSIBLE to find. I was told the grill is the ONLY one in the USA still new in box...and I believed him.
The pics below are of the Monty's 1st day in the body shop which was March 5th, 2012. On the hood is probably 50 circles in red of hail damage

Here is DAY TWO in shop. Grinded down and cut out the cancer spots and put in new metal. Removed all dents from hood, top and sides!
ktmk36

Day 3 of Monty in the shop
As stated before, adding diamond plate to hood and will have it bed lined in black then mount the shovel kit to one side and the axe kit to the other side. Kit came with rivets, me and body guys fear putting rivets through the hood so we are mulling around options.
Front end has had all rock rust spots grinded down.
Rebuilt some spots around windshield frame and coated is Naval Jelly to prevent future rust.

Here are a couple pics of some Landrover Defenders with the shovel and axe mount on diamond plate.

Day 5 of Monty in the shop
Primering it and taping off...going to do the roof and hood first.
Contemplating running a black 2" stripe down side in line with the handles....body shop thinks I should, I'm beginning to think no.
We are modeling the paint job after the Landrover Defender ICE limited edition paint. I will attach two pics of it as well so you can have an idea.
The roof rack is a custom made rack that was on it when I bought it. Dropping it off to have it Rhino Lined as well.
Also had diamond plate rocker panels cut and will do those in Rhino Lining as well.
This brought us to Friday March 9th, they will start painting Monday. Gotta decide quick on the stripe!!!!

Nice post. Great to see another Gen1 come back to life. A friend of mine has a Gen1 Montero that he's done a nice job updating too. Here's a link. (http://www.expeditionportal.com/vehicules/58-other/736-spotted-nicely-modded-mitsubishi-montero.html)

Funny, I found that link and checked it out too. I found another guy who had "painted" the dash as well. I wish I would have found sooner...would have loved to change the brown to black

So stopped by today to see what's been done on DAY 6: Not much....sanded vehicle down, applied a "test" coat of black to hood, real thin layer...hopefully more done tomorrow!

Just thinking out loud but maybe you can weld some bolts or threaded rod to the diamond plate so you can attach your shovel mount to that instead of the hood itself. Then just make sure your diamond plate is securely mounted to your hood.:ylsmoke:
I do like your idea of mounting diamond plate to the hood (may 'borrow' that from you).
ktmk36
03-14-2012, 10:29 PM
The mounting kit from Rovers North does mount to the diamond plate...via rivets. Problem with using a bolt pattern to mount to diamond plate, is then wind lifting up axe/shovel and pulling on diamond plate. Therefore diamond plate needs to be secured to hood via rivets or screwed into hood, either way you have to put holes in hood..
Otherwise, if not mounting the axe/shovel to the diamond plate, I would just use a real strong 3M adhesive to mount diamond plate to hood. I'm afraid there is no adhesive strong enough to hold diamond plate and shovel in place and excess speeds????Maybe there is????
As far as "borrowing ideas" the MAIN reason I am on here is to share ideas so please use any and all things seen here by me, as I PROMISE I have already done the same to somebody else!!!! There is nothing original in my thinking on any of this!!!
I have always loved the Defender 110's but cannot and will not pay $60 to $90k for one decked out as I would like...next best thing is to take a GREAT MONTY and do some cosmetic touches to help acheive a cool (I hope) hybrid of the two!!

OFF-ROADER...I tried clicking your build thread link and I see the thread with description, but no pics...'am I doin something wrong??
Some of the pics were lost when Montypics.com's servers crashed and they didn't have a decent backup. Rather than upload literally hundreds if not over a thousand pics, I decided to pass. Later posts in that thread do have pics which are there because I began using better picture hosting sites.
What picture(s) in particular are you looking for? There's also a similar thread on 4x4wire but unfortunately many of the pics are also gone.

IIRC there are a few build threads both on here and on 4x4wire.com.
Also depending on the kinds of upgrades (for specific technical needs? for looks? etc.) you're considering and the budget you have in mind, we may be able to shed more light on what's possible.
ktmk36
03-15-2012, 12:11 AM
I told myself when I began, budget is not a concern...with that said I already have over $11k in it.
HELP: When I bought it, it had a knock in the engine, sounded like a bad lifter. Took it to shop, they broke it down and found NOTHING..since then the knock is still there and maybe even louder. Any thoughts? It does increase w/ acceleration.
After it gets out of shop, I plan on looking into suspension..it drives/rides real nice now, but it is 23 years old, others have mentioned Old Man Emu, so I will look into that...any other ideas on suspension?
Then plan on scraping frame and applying naval jelly...yes I know I did this all arse backwards, haha.
Roof rack had some old stainless steel off road lights, I busted them pulling into garage...funny how you assume the door is tall enough!!
Looking at a low profile light on roof so as not to get broken again when throwing kayaks and stuff up on top...any ideas?
Then wanting to add a rear light on rack as well, low profile.
Also want to add 2 lights to front bumper.
Ordered an ARB snorkel, 4-6 weeks out as it is coming from Australia.
Any other suggestions???
I also read on an Australian blog they did a diesel engine swap out..anyone know any info on that?
Not terribly interested in a lift, maybe a 2" lift at most.

I have a decent Gen 2 build thread in my signature. Definitely a budget build but that's because I do all of the work myself. Might give you some ideas. A 2 inch lift and some taller tires do more than most mods as far as where you can go. I'd start there and progress as needed. You have a Gen 1 so I probably won't be able to help too much.

I easily see where 2 of the pieces go, but the rest??? Axe handle???

OK, got it figured out..did a mock up based off pics I saw.
For handle there is 4 mounting brackets with 4 L brackets. The L brackets keep it secure from sliding to right or left, so just alternate sides on mounts of L bracket.
Here is a couple pics, pick axe is still shrink wrapped to handle for ease of transportation for now.

The new/replaced metal around the wheel wells looks great, cant see any seams or imperfections...nice!
That is going to be one nice looking monty! Can't wait to see the final product! :luxhello:

Take care man, sure glad I sold her to you :)

Thanks for the nice words....Joe, glad you found the link so you can watch your Old Monty come back to life....I love the FULL MONTY name, may change her nickname to that!!
Ok, DAY 10: Me and wife on our way to BWW to meet some friends for the MU game (yuck, that game blew)...anyways, stopped by body shop for giggles knowing not much would have been done.
The had the 2nd coat of white done, I think, and had it taped off to apply black. Not sure if black was going on Friday or not, I kind of doubt it. First week progress flew, now it's dragging and I am impatient...I can't wait to drive this bad boy now that the weather has turned nice!
ktmk36
03-19-2012, 08:52 PM
DAY 11: Black has been applied, I thought it was gonna be more of a matte black...turns out it is more of a semi-gloss. We'll see how that looks after vehicle put back together. Glare on hood doesn't seem too bad!
Body shop I think is tired of me stopping by daily, told me today, POLITELY, that the next 2 or 3 days will be putting interior back in and getting door handles and mirrors and emblems on. Sooooo...I guess I will give them some space and check in Wednesday night or Thursday day.

Great Job but I could never do that.
If it were my rig, I'd be too worried and it's simply still too nice to take off road. I'd be uber-paranoid of just scratching it on the bushes much less getting a dent or rock rash!

off-roader: When I started this I didn't envision it becoming so nice...now that were 80% there, that is EXACTLY my fear. I own a pest control company and I modeled it after a Safari type theme...see pics below. So during the week this will be my sales truck (Montero) and weekends will be my fun truck. I guess one of the good things is when you own your own company, you NEVER get the time off you would like to fully get yourself into trouble in this truck...so that may be The Full Monty's saving grace!! I plan on having magnets made w/ our logo so I can plaster it on the doors during the week and pull them off on the weekends!!

Ok so....I show up on Friday (day 15) Monty still not put back together. Was waaaaay frustrated as I anticipated picking it up and having it for weekend. One good thing, my roof rack was done getting Rhino Lined so I did pick that up...pics below.
Monday (day 16) get there and have put together and told tomorrow 3pm to 5pm she will be ready. He wants to discuss striping the Monty..I want to see if put back together as I am having serious doubts with the semi-gloss black, wish it had been the matte black. Only way to tell how it looks is to get everything back on it, so we will see.
Still awaiting the snorkel from Australia.
Shop is heavily backing off mounting the pick axe and shovel to hood fearing it is not strong enough...if they do that, I will fabricate a "X" bracket on the bottom side of the hood to give it support and mount the stuff anyways. Didn't do all that research, shopping, money spending and fabricating diamond plate to not use it.
I had diamond plate cut for the rocker panels...now I have fears of drilling into rockers to mount it and then not getting the best seal between the two and then it rotting out in a year or two due to water and mud. I have seen many a Jeep rot out after the owner SWEARS he sealed it perfectly. SO...I may just have them tape off the rockers and Rhino Line them as well, wont be as strong but will help cover up dents already there and protect against scratches and small dings.
ktmk36
03-27-2012, 01:45 AM
I made mention of how they painted the headlight housing white, I really fear that will look too "hip" and that is not the look I am going for. Soooo...I ordered the housings in black for $24.00 just to be safe, if I dont like the white I will switch back to the black.
Other stupid stuff...they put the side mirrors back on but did not repaint the black arms, the arms were faded black with rust spots...I felt like an arse, but pointed it out and before I could say it was unacceptable, he said they would get it squared away ASAP...that's all you can ask for!
It was LAST Monday the 19th (day 11) that they said don't come back for 2 days as we put it back together...one week later still NOT PUT BACK TOGETHER, I know stuff comes up...but come on. Tomorrow we will sit down and go over vehicle with fine tooth comb and final invoice. I am NOT paying for a week of shop time where nothing happened.
On top of it all, he said he was ordering some Jeep Cherokee fender flares to see how they lined up on the Montero, he never did, so there is an instant $300 savings!!
ktmk36
03-27-2012, 11:08 PM
OK...DAY 17 and starting to get on the absurd side of things....
Today it was suppossed to be DONE & READY for pick up...keep in mind DAY 11 (Monday) I was told 2 days to put back together then NOTHING done on DAY 12, 13, 14 and 15!!!!!!! Put back together began on DAY 16!!!
I get there 4:30pm, 30 minutes before close...they are washing it and detailing it (not really). I tour the outside of vehicle and find 8 to 10 small things I am not happy about...1 or 2 you can live with...once the count passes 5 you know your gonna complain, 8 to 10 and danger of sounding like an arsehole is close at hand.
Then I open the doors to find my NEW LEATHER SEATS covered in dust and large size dust particles...dash and new stereo covered in dust. Leather on doors was "shot" with some kind of cleaner and never wiped off leaving spotting...WTH? Now my temperature is through the roof...exterior crap they missed is easy to fix...my brand new interior all mucked up IS NOT something easily overlooked. A couple of SCUFFS in the LEATHER on back seat and passenger seat...the interior above all else is what has my blood boiling. $4,300 should get a interior detailed especially considering all the dust that was in there.
So I did the walk around the exterior with him...
1. around the headlight bezel is a rubber gromet that is used to hold it firm, it was missing and it rattled around just sitting there, imagine hiway speeds what it would do?
2. Trim piece beneath the grill had black paint oversprayed on it about the size of a quarter, very easy to see.
3. Windshield wipers which are black and 23 years old and faded, were not repainted as we spoke of.
4. Drivers and passenger side mirrors same as wipers, not repainted....the worse part we spoke of it 3 times, the last time being YESTERDAY when I was there!!!!!!
5. Yellowing in 2 spots on the white paint, WTH? Pointed it out.
6. Rear side windows I TOLD them to remove them when they were painting as I had new ones that needed to go in and I BROUGHT them the new ones and explained again...didn't happen. The reason I needed it done was the previous owner was doing some repair welding on the roof basket while it was still on the Monty and molten metal fell down onto/INTO the glass and embeded itself in the glass and now has begun to RUST...RUST in GLASS!!!! I paid good money for new ones, they were taking everything off....the glass was to come too...damn it!!!
7. White paint over spray on chrome rain gutter.
8. Black paint bled through tape onto white around the rear window.
9. Paint scratch/chip around BOTH headlight bezels.
10. Can't remeber..probably something I didn't see.
11. My diamond plate and axe and axe mount no where to be found in truck, though shovel and shovel mount kit was. Also had towels I brought to cover leather to protect them not there.
12. Plastic piece on rear gate that holds lights that illuminate the license plate was put on but had 1/4" gap between the gate and the piece, very noticeable.
All in all, the exterior stuff was HIGHLY VISIBLE to anyone with 20/20 vision, I feel it should have been caught before I found it!
I will say this, Dave, the owner was very cordial, he always expect customers to nit pick his work and seemed truly embarrassed with what I found. With that said, I feel he should have checked his shops work and inspected the MONTY before I got there so he would not be put in that situation.
So...I took some pics, but will wait for final product before posting any REVEALING shots...I will post where he took some notes with issues directly on the car, kinda funny.
What is your thoughts folks...does it need something on the side of it...they removed the original molding to paint...should I put new molding on? Some kind of stripping? Leave as is?
Also, still need to install Snorkel, diamond plate and axe and shovel.
ktmk36
03-27-2012, 11:14 PM
Let me add this...the body work turned out fantastic! There was lots of rust that was cut out and replaced. His team did a great job on that, the body looks like it did the day it came off the line...except for the rockers which we didn't work on!
The paint was applied beautifully and the black on the hood was done cleanly with no bleeding from white to black and vice versa.
Where they lack a bit in is the finishing touches. The last 10 yards is always the hardest and most important.

I think it looks fantastic, man. One of the nicest Montys I think I've ever seen, really.
Shame they dropped the ball on execution. A "six-footer" might be perfectly acceptable for something done with rattle cans in the garage (how I tend to roll), but for that kind of coin, I'd say you're right to expect better. It makes no sense to me how those who would accept such large projects would then half-*** them. As if the economy is SO generous to the automotive industry these days and any of us can expect to piss off a customer.
Good call on the black headlight buckets, too, by the way. The white is neat, but looks like the sort of thing those monsters at Mansory would do to a vehicle. (See their latest Range Rover offering (http://www.mansory.ch/mansory-range/range-rover/range-rover-vogue/range-rover-vogue), for example.)

You know that the chrome stripping around the rain gutter can be pulled off fairly easy. I pulled mine off and (I know it sounds funny) it looked a lot better. I know they already did the paint job and whatnot so it's probably too late, but it does come off and looks good without it.

One thing I've learned with 12 years of sales under my belt... 'Under-promise & Over-deliver." Same as setting the right expectations which may not mean exactly correct expectations either. It sounds like they haven't learned that at your paint shop yet.
Aside from those problems it does look to be very nicely executed though! I sure hope you haven't paid them yet?

03-28-2012, 10:08 PM
No pay yet, at time of pick up and I plan on negotiating some...I mean I do count 6 FLIPPIN DAYS it sat at shop and wasn't even touched!!! If they fix all issues and DETAIL MY INTERIOR, I will not argue the quality then at that point, just the inconvience of their delays and broken promises...again I SHOULD of had this ONE WEEK ago!!
Growing up, my old man and I restored a 66 Mustang from the Frame up, including body work and paint. The value there is you NEED the right tools for the job. I have no tools for body and paint...really wishing I did now, would have saved a ton.
I am not independently wealthy, as a matter of fact the funds for this build came from my 2008 Nissan Titan Pro4X that I sold and made about $10k on. I used that money to fix the Monty, justifying in my head...
1. The Titan gets 12 MPG...seriously 12MPG, the Monty as she sits gets 14-17, so making her a daily driver pays off there.
2. If I do it right the Monty will be JUST as nice and even more unique than the Titan
3. If I maintain and take care of the Monty, resale will be all I could ever want.

I asked about pulling the chrome off, he replied back that they could put black tape on it if it looked bad underneath the chrome...I thought "Black tape, are you serious, cadillac paint job with a Pinto band aid...forget that!"
I may down the road do just that and yank it off and paint it

Ok, finally picked it up on Friday DAY 20....
Still a few small things wrong, but not ebough to cry about.
I couldn't leave without letting him know my dissapointment concerning everything but especially the interior and the fact it sat for 5 days untouched when they were to be outting it back together. In the end I anticipated a $4,500 bill and we settled on $4,000. So here's the pics...some after I picked it up and some with the roof rack on it.

Ok, so I had to pull in garage due to high winds to do a mock up of diamond plate and shovel/axe mount.
Handles are too long to fit on hood without going over the edge, so will have ends hang over rear of hood onto cowl. This means anytime hood needs open I will have to remove handles. Here is some pics...thoughts?
Will Rhino line the diamond plate, though the "silver" effect does match other pieces of truck.

Perhaps you can trim the shovel end to size and then reshape it to fit the shovel head? That's what I'd shoot for if I were to shorten it but IMHO, I don't believe it's too long myself.

Definitely want to lose the bling on that diamond plate. Riding off into the sunset at the end of the movie is supposed to be brilliant - not blinding. ;)
And what about mounting the shovel/axe on the front and side of that epic roof rack, sir? I can think of (3) reasons for doing so:
1. Aesthetic: Balances out the other tool currently mounted up yonder, axe up front (least wind resistance), shovel on passenger side (they'll be the ones using it!)
2. Aesthetic: Hood looks cluttered with those tools parked on it. Offsets the 5hp gained via racing stripe. Retain the diamond plate for roof access/spotters.
3. Functional: Do you really want a shovel and pickaxe (A) where passing miscreants can reach them (B) between you and whatever immovable object you might, unfortunately, encounter?
Just my .o2. Fantastic rig, boss. Really. I'm even thinking about doing something similar with mine. I've got classic, Mitsubishi clearcoat fade/peel on my hood and have been thinking about shooting it with flat black. But then I thought about how your truck turned out and decided I *might* go with a desert-themed hommage to my favorite manly beverage.

There is NO DOUBT the roof rack mounts are by far the best option and I have mulled it over many times and STILL may do that.
The PROBLEM is I have LOVED the Defender's and the hood mount shovel/axe mount since I was a kid and I watched Merlin Olsen's World of Wildlife.
My wife too has fears of hooligans grabbing the tools and smashing windows or just plain mischief. I see the thought process but don't share the same fears...besides the straps it comes with, I figured I would also zip tie it to the mounts to ensure more difficult time in getting it off by strangers as well as secure it more tightly while driving.
Intentions all a long have been to Rhino line diamond plate.
My biggest fears with hood are popping holes in it for the diamond plate and mounts.
Everyone I know is trying to talk me out of doing it...so why 'am I being so damned stubborn in wanting to do it????

Mmmmm...
As for the OP, well, it is your rig and you should do what you deem it requires. I am with DR1665 on the point about road glare. As for miscreants stealing it... well that would be a major concern for me where I live. More important though IMHO is the wear and tear on both due to their exposure to the elements. If it were me, I'd keep them off the rig until I was actually wheeling or at least kept in back safely secured inside both to avoid theft and also any added damage that could occur in an accident if they were stored in back.

Because it's your truck and, in the end, opinions are like arseholes?
Diamond plate on the hood is a cool idea. And done up in black, I think it will look righteous. Just not sure about those tools, mate. A pair of matching spears or swords, sure - that's symmetry - but if you really need to use them, do you want to lose the additional leverage and control that comes from the extra few inches of handle?
Have you ever thought about mounting horizontally across the hood, as opposed to lengthwise? Side-by-side at the rear, shovel blade could act as a bug deflector of sorts. :P
And yeah, @off-roader, mmmm...

Thanks for the kind words, it is nice to hear others see it the way I do...I had a guy last week tell me "It has to be in the top 10 of best looking Montero's in the country"
At the time I said, Ahh shucks, nahhhh
But I have been looking and looking online and must say in the USA I have been only able to find a handful of really nice, well maintained Monteros. I still don't think its top 10, but I wold be happy with top 50 for sure!!
Most have been converted to hunting trucks with interior ripped out and beat to hell...I have obviously found some nice ones on here as well.

The FULL MONTY goes in Tuesday to get all lights hooked up and 2 6" KC lights mounted to front bumper...I have a few friends who say "Heck we can run those lights ourselves", then each has a completely different way of running them. I have heard horror stories of fools running electrical wrong and burning down their rig...so, to the pros it goes to get it done right...I cant force my buds to pay for a burned down rig, but the shop does it wrongs and it goes in flames, they will pay, insurance is how I look at it.
Everyone wants to drill through roof to run the lines...I do not like that idea, old lights came off roof and into door weatherstrip on headliner...so I will try that first, may look crappy...if so, will then try running lines into rear exterior pillar through the top of black plastic vent at rear of the rear window.

Check your local laws regarding rearward facing lights in case they have to be disconnected except when in use off road or on a loading dock.
I was actually pulled over once for having a rearward facing light left on. The officer said I need to wire in a disconnect for them but didn't give me a ticket because he had made the same mistake himself on his rig (used when disconnecting his boat).
I never did. Instead I removed the light (was mounted on my hitch) and when I mounted them onto my roof rack, I used a trailer wiring connector (4 pin) with cap to wire them up. I would just keep it disconnected until I needed them off road. This way the rack w/ lights was easily removable between my monties.:smiley_drive:

He was saying I need to wire it so when not towing they won't stay on even if the switch inside was left on. I think he was wrong on that but never pursued it further since I totally changed the configuration and left them disconnected for the most part.

Ok, so picked it up out of the shop on Tuesday where it had the Amp, Sub and automatic door locks installed. As most know, the Montero (Gen 1's) have auto locks that if you press down on drivers side lock it then locks all four doors and conversely if you pull up on drivers side lock all 4 door locks unlock. Thats their definition of electric locks/automatic locks
Car stereo place looked up on their computer and informed me that installing remote door locks would work on this model. So $129.00 later it was done, and it does work!!
The amp went under the driver seat, it is a mono output just for the sub (I'm a rock n roll guy, so there will be no window rattling base at stop lights by me). I wanted a multi channel output but truth be told, Mitsubishi putting the 3.5" speakers in dash screwed that as any amp worth it's muster would blow the speakers, and I added NICE Infinity speakers.
May look into building into rear pillars a spot for some frontward facing 6 x 9's...we'll see.
The Sub is a Pioneer Premium, face down model...I wanted something that took up as little room as possible and like how it appears I can possibly stack stuff on top or lay across if need be with no danger to speaker itself.

So on Saturday I picked the Monty up from Chux Truck from getting the lights done...man they did a great job and took meticulous care with everything. We have a quick disconnect attatched to bottom of the roof rack, so just pull it out and remove roof when needed!
The lights on front, I did not want the bumper drilled into as chrome would chip then rust begins and 1 year from now its screwed...so they created a small bracket and mounted to frame.
All in all I am very pleased...
As you can see they came out the rear passenger pillar to get power to the roof, worked out nicely.
There was plenty of room to add the light switches next to the interior light dimmer.

Looks like you need a key to get to the bolts to remove the roof rack, eh?

Hey Bart,
CURT makes the disconnect. The gutter clamps are made by YAKIMA with YAKIMA bars that the roof rack sits on.
One key works the gutter clamps, we get lots of hail around here (Kansas City, MO) and my rig DOES NOT fit in my garage with the rack on. I have U-bolts that attach the rack to the bars...it's a pain to undo that from the bars...so now when I need to take it off, I unlock four locks and lift the ENTIRE rack off the roof with 2 people doing it. Not terribly easy but by far the easiest I could come up with.

Do you mean the rhino lining will rub on anything I put up there? Not sure if thats what you were reffering to?
Only plastic totes, canvas bags and such will go up there...nothing of value that WONT be inside something strong and weatherproof!
If I have anything I am concerned getting scratched I will put inside...beside, this is what all new trucks come with now in the bed of them and most people get their old ones lined as well. My Nissan Titan, my OLD Titan had it as does my Nissan Frontier...most stuff slides on it easily, it is meant to protect the bed not scuff up stuff...with that said, if care is not taken it could do just that.

You know, I was making this to be my baby...then I met a guy. He has owned EVERY cool car/truck you can think of. I was looking at all his pictures and asking him about them. He would buy one, keep it for a year or two and sell it and buy another one, always getting cars he had dreamed of. Not getting emotionally attached is the key he said.
It changed my perspective on things, because there are LOTS of cars/trucks I would love to own but have not the room to store them or the $$$ to buy them. This way, every year or two I get to get a car of my dreams, experience it for awhile and move on and get the next car of my dreams!!!
With that said, yes, I have reservations about selling it....but maybe its like murder or adultery, the 1st time is the hardest then every time after that just gets easier!!! Not that I am speaking from experience on murder and adultery!!!!

I'm going in the reverse direction, actually. I've had vehicles for short times, found something I don't like and booted em to the curb.... kind of like my ex girlfriends.
I spent about a year deciding what I wanted in my next vehicle and at what price point. It took tons of research and many beers with the guys to figure out the Montero. Heck we even used a chalk board and listed key features, pros, and cons. (OK, the chalk board is a stretch, but we may as well have used it.) But in the end I think I've found nearly the perfect truck for my small family and I. It's taking some work and that work investment is, perspectively speaking, going to force me to keep the truck for a while. But why wouldn't I? Hell, every time I work on it I bleed from my veins and my pocket. Its hard work and its an investment. Besides I don't think I could get my money back on my investment, but in my eyes, the investment is the value added.... opportunities to get the family out exploring.
Besides, I'd be VERY surprised if you got 17k for your truck as (unfortunately) it isn't the most desirable truck. But it only takes one person to be willing to spend that much, I suppose.

Hello all...been gone awhile, so just read all the post I missed. Funny I used to get an email when someone posted now I don't...oh well.
I have done nothing new to the Montero since last report...except add about 8,000 mile to the odometer!
My business is growing and I am in need of a new work vehicle, looking at Toyota Tacoma for dependability and longevity.
Also buying a home on the lake. I always told myself, "Self...if you had a chance to own your own business and own a house on the lake but you had to sell the Montero to do so, would you?" And the Answer was always yes...so here we are 3 years into owning my own company and now moving to a crazy *** house on the lake...so it has come time, even though I really don't want to, to sell the Montero.
It appraised at $17,500 with the transmission seal leaking...cost to repair is $700 unless you're mechanically enclined then cost is under $100 for you to do...just wanted to give heads up on that.
Have many spare parts such as rear side window, front 1/4 windows that swing out. Grab bar on dash and roof, grill and other misc. stuff. I still have the shovel and pick axe and rhino lined diamond plate for the hood if anyone decides to use it.
Listen....we all know how rare a find this truck is and how painful it is for me to release, but I wanted to give all on here a first crack at it. I will eventually put on Craigslist and try Ebay as well.
Cash talks, I have right at $18,000 in it...I do expect to take a little loss...but not much, I am also willing to drive it half way to where you are when the time comes for the purchase. I have driven it 3 hours away from home and back in the same day and did 70+mph the whole way....solid truck.
I will see if I can post a video of it starting and driving.
I am also gonna post this in the for sale section of Expedition Portal...I have a strong feeling many will want it but few or none will have the funds to get it, so I am completely resigned to still be owning it this time next year...we'll see.

LAOutbackTrail...in this economy $200,000 homes sell for $120,000....$100,000 Lambo's sell for $60,000....so do I expect it to sell for $17,500? No...hence why I am not asking $17,500.
Just as in the above examples you get an appraisal to show it's fair market value, you list the item and let the market bare it's value to you...maybe $15k...$10k or it may not sell at all. I am 41 and have sold many things over the years...#1 lesson, 90% of people will not pay what an item is worth....but that 10%...if you can find them! I wont pay $20k for a Mickey Mouse Painting, but some Disney die hard will shell it out quick. Get where I am going? This may not be for you and you may not see the value and rarity this vehicle is...thats cool.
I'am not an idiot and I know how things work...including a guy who wakes up on Sunday, with, as my wife would say, "Wearing their angry eyes" and posting negative, non helpful, troll like crap.
A better course of action from you might have been..."Wow, nice truck, but $17.5k in this economy...I dunno, I sure hope you get close to it though!"
See how that works? You still get your message across without sounding like a sarcastic blowhard!
If you were just some "dude" on craigslist or ebay saying that, then it would be "Oh well F' him"...but your a member of the forum and I expected a little class/respect from you...that's why I gave back as much class/respect as I felt your post deserved.

If you know of a $100K Lamborghini selling for $60K, I would love to know about it!

well for ****s & giggles took the montero to 3 different dealerships looking to get a trade in on new truck, knowing full well what an up hill battle that would be...surprisingly last dealer offered $8k towards a $20k truck. Not bad, I passed...for now....I really thought a dealer would not even touch it, funny thing, this Ford dealer said they have an outfit across seas that buys exotic and enthusiast type cars/trucks and they sell it to them. I need to find who that outfit is,,,if Ford was offering $8k you know they were gonna sell it for even more to the overseas outfit

I have a question when they wired in the Rack did they drill into the plastic piece or did they pop it out and squeeze the loom in? I will buying a Montero soon and am really curious because I will be adding a rack to it.

You maybe expecting too much if you read many of his other posts.
Anyway, good luck with the sale and I hope you get at least what you put into it. I'm not the type to judge or tell someone what they should or shouldn't do without knowing all the details what I do know is that life's a constant change and one must adapt to it.
