My '89 Honda Transalp, just getting started with it. Hope to have the hard bags by end of the year for a trip to Big Bend in Feb '11. I like to plan way ahead.

My, then, new XR650L on top of Mosquito Pass in August. After stopping for the photo, it did not want to restart at that altitude. I have since added the 4 gallon gas tank to for additional range.

34444

I have the same problem here in El Paso...My old 83 Shovelhead doesn't like the high altitude in the mountains!! Had me worried one time when it took a couple minutes to get her goin.

I'm on the look out for a cheap dirt bike to get my off road legs so to speak.

Friday, to Kernville, Ca to meet up with the rest of the guys. Then all over Calif and maybe even into Oregon depending on time over the next 10 days.

Just traded this:

For this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/flux_capacitor/photo.jpg

Needed longer legs. The 640 Adventure was great for around this area but lacked what I need for longer trips. I truly believe the 950A is the finest do-it-all motorcycle ever made. Looking forward to some good times.

Driving back from a weekend of fly fishing at Lees Ferry this afternoon and I stop at the Express Mart in Gap, AZ.
Start with the obligatory feeding of the resident rez dog my lunch leftovers, empty my bladder, buy some Funions (mandatory road trip munchies) for the last 30 miles to Tuba City, and go outside and find this parked in front of my truck.
Start talking with the owner and turns out he has been out for 5+ months everywhere west of SD with nothing more than a backpack. No GPS...stock tank...didn't even start the trip with the side bags. Super nice guy, won't put his name or where he is from out on this forum but someone might recognize him. I told him about the website and that I would throw up his picture. Hopefully he will post some pics of his trip. I think the bike was a KTM 525 EXC but I am not a bike pro. Going to go and dust off the CRF450x after I am done posting. Looks like I need to start researching a more trip friendly bike...:coffeedrink:

My bike started out as a brand new 1996 Yamaha Super Tenere. Was my daily driver and I new that bike in and out. The first trip was to Tunesia.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/TheSchwall/TenereSenegal.jpg

After 3 years 100.000km on the clock and many adventures around Europe I made some modifications for a 6 month trip across Africa. The bike ended up looking like this: (including my handmade 60 liter Kevlar fuel tank)
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/TheSchwall/10-17-2010_18.jpg

Dragged it from Germany 9000km all the way down the west coast of Africa.
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/TheSchwall/10-17-2010_6.jpg

Had a "minor" electrical issue in the Sahara that took two months to figure out...
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/TheSchwall/10-17-2010_36.jpg

Got a ride on a truck to Dakar/Senegal
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/TheSchwall/10-17-2010_38.jpg

Made it work:
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/TheSchwall/Africa04.jpg

Booked a flight back to Germany (with the bike) where I ended up selling it....

But it was 4 Harleys. Great bikes for adventure and overland rides. Bit heavy I should admit, but great!

I wish that was all. Got the GL Great Basin, so that's covered. Need to turn my attention to the undersized tank and get a Safari tank. I'm going to do some rear subframe mods to beef it up as it needs it. Need a side stand relocator, better bash plate, buy and modify a center stand to work, etc., etc., etc. Ordered some new plastics today as the orig owner thought it best to paint the orig orange plastics black. Also ordered the touring windscreen for the 690 Enduro as it fits well on the 950 (with some drilling, of course). Even with all that, there's the preventative issues I want to address now (aftermarket clutch slave, aftermarket fuel pump and so on). Yup, this bike has a ways to go before its ready to head out to parts unknown. Oh, that freak'n stock seat has to go too!

Black Dog Skidplate... Black Dog side stand bracket... Vacuum fuel pump... good call on the 690 windscreen... early 950S Center stand...

The other stuff is not as important.

Modified a non-S center stand (added 33mm length to it) and reinforced my subframe so I can carry gear/fuel. Ordered spark arrestors for the Akras. Next month, I'll be writing a heck of a check to Black Dog Cycle.

I may build a rack system to protect the cans and keep the Great Basin off the cans, but after that, its bolt-on bliss from this point forward!

right on! - what do you ride?
I am at pachaug all the time. I ride with the ADV guys most of the time.

check out these threads:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=368922&highlight=pachaug

those Camp and Rides are a blast - a ton of different riders/abilities/styles - there is something for everyone - come check one out this summer.

I ride a KLR. The lovely Mrs. Trip has a lowered TW200 that I used to ride myself. I like to ride parts of the Pachaug loop, Arcadia, my own secret routes all over western RI/ eastern CT. There's a lot out there.
I recognized your name from ADV...long time lurker, mostly. You guys look too rambunctious for me to actually ride with. :yikes:
I just might take you up on a Camp & Ride this year, though. Looks like a good time!

Figure that being a rare bike alone is neat, but plenty of potential for some off the beaten path riding makes it even better.

I'll start a thread of the build up later on with plenty of pics.

Oh don't worry, it has been down on rocks, and mud and trees and various other sundry items plenty of times. If you skip to about 3:20 you will see one of many stupid crashes I have when I ride (yeah, I suck at it):

It's a dirt bike, that is what it is made for. The plastic gets scratched up a little, but it is easy and cheap to replace if it gets broken. It is the engine you don't want to put a dent or hole in, but that hasn't happened - yet.

Good catch. Push Button on the Camera. Not much on and off necessary. It is a GOPRO HD camera. 2.5 hrs of battery life per battery, 32 gigs of memory per SD card for about 6 hrs of high def 60 fps video per card. Also can plug into the bike for unlimited power. Have several mounting places on the bike as well.

How hard is it to locate and manipulate the button while wearing motorcycle gloves at speed? Was it difficult to co-relate what the camera 'sees' and what you are looking to photograph?

Ohhhhhh pretttty! How does it compare to the XR? Dumb question, I know.... but its one that I like.

We'll, the XR is a great bike it just really needs updated. The KTM has much better power from the fuel injection, better mpg, way better suspension, much lighter feel under you, better handling. The first check of mpg was 53.99 on graded roads and two track running around 45-65 mph the XR was in the low 40's on the same route. In strong winds I have no problem holding any speed. You have an XR so you know how they are. I was over riding the suspension on the XR much to often (6' 4" 230lbs). I like a bike to run down the hiway and to be fun on the trails when I feel younger than what I am. I almost went with the 990 Adventure and I most likely will buy one next spring to replace my Versys but, keep the 690 also.

LaOutbackTrail
05-12-2011, 03:50 AM
Thanks for the comparison. Yeah... after having raced enduro, harescrambles, and MX.... I find myself outriding my XRL's suspension.

I'll likely end up with a 640ADV, since it is nearly perfect for me in so many ways.

But, how much do the 690s like yours go for?

I have a 2000 model in the same color. Yours is in a lot better shape than mine :D

Those look like Shinko 705's on there, how do you like those on the KLR? I hear a lot of positive things about them on the bigger bikes in tubeless format, however they had some de-lamination issues and had to be made a radial instead of bias-ply.

Thanks,
They are Avon Gripsters and I love them. Some people call them "slipsters" I hear they suck.

I've had them on three KLR's and I don't have much to compare them to.

I run 35psi front and rear on the street and 20psi front 21psi rear in the dirt. I rode about 80 miles of dirt on Sunday and they were awesome! They got me through rocks, gravel, mud, and hard pack.
I know there are better tires out there and I've lots of good things about the Shinko's.

I've got the Wolfman Explorer tank bag mounted on it in this picture, and hope it still fits the larger tank I'll be ordering in a week or so (Clarke 4.2 gallon vs. 2 gallon OEM). For luggage, the plan is to pickup a GiantLoop Coyote bag. That should be plenty of storage and range for what I intend to do. I'll post pics as this progresses..

LOVE this bike! I'm just about ready for a full summer of fun with it. Still getting ~60 mpg with it on a short shake-down ride yesterday. 100 miles of windy asphalt and gravel roads, warm temp, and very little traffic. Heaven!:bike_rider:

Thanks,
They are Avon Gripsters and I love them.

I know there are better tires out there and I've lots of good things about the Shinko's.

http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo275/elcabritos/Adventure%20ride/P5220012.jpg

a pic of the MUD that they made it through.
http://i383.photobucket.com/albums/oo275/elcabritos/Adventure%20ride/P5220020.jpg

Sorry for mistaking the Gripsters for Shinkos... though the tread patterns appear similar to me

If you've had them on that many KLR's and have the pressures all worked out, the performance must work well for you and there's no real reason to change. I wish I was so consistent in my tire buying to achieve that kind of knowledge about how the bike handled with a particular tire.

This is my work in-progress expedition bike. It's a '98 Suzuki DR350 dirt model (kickstart-only) that's been dual-sported. I'm planning an Indiana-Oregon-Indiana trip this September on it.

http://scarysharkface.smugmug.com/photos/i-kw57mQC/0/XL/i-kw57mQC-XL.jpg

I've got the Wolfman Explorer tank bag mounted on it in this picture, and hope it still fits the larger tank I'll be ordering in a week or so (Clarke 4.2 gallon vs. 2 gallon OEM). For luggage, the plan is to pickup a GiantLoop Coyote bag. That should be plenty of storage and range for what I intend to do. I'll post pics as this progresses..

John

The Coyote rear luggage bag is interesting, I've seen it on a few long-distance thumpers before and it seems to work well from my observation, but I don't have any first hand experience.

Nice KLX. I need to take some more recent pictures of my XT250, feel like I'm finally getting the bike to a point that I'd feel comfortable one a multi-day ride, just have to get my faith in my own ability in check and get out there.

I added a Coyote about 2 weeks ago, love it! Plan on getting the new GL Diablo tank bag, and I've emailed them the with the chance of hoping to get a front fender bag in matching colors to the Diablo and Coyote.

Yeah, me too... I went round and round debating between the Great Basin and the Coyote thinking I would eventually upgrade bikes and could just cinch down the big one if I got it. So glad I got the Coyote, I think the Great Basin is only at home on a 590 or larger bike. The Coyote is big enough that with an "ultra-light" mentality it will work on any bike.

I dig the S converted SM, do you ever swap to the SM wheels. I recently got an S and want an SM wheelset for commuting around town and maybe some fun at the track.

What are you using for storage? I'm leaning towards the Giant Loop Coyote, is that what you're using? Are you happy with what you have?

I don't swap wheels as much as I used to, riding in the dirt is more funner :bike_rider:

I have a 1st gen Giant Loop. It's really nice, but the new ones are WAY better, I may replace mine if I can spare the coin or if they do some sort of loyalty trade-up thing (hint hint GL ) Wolfman Enduro tank bag, happy with it as well. The tail bag is a stackable set of tank bags from a larger touring bike. I made a rear rack with a removable plateform that holds the bags, then a bungy net keeps them from bouncing around. Kind of a mish mash of bags, but it works for now. My ideal setup would be a combination of Giant Loop Coyote, Wolfman Tank and Rollie bags, and some Rotopax for fuel and water. But for now, I'll just keep putting my $$'s into the fuel tank :coffeedrink:

Kinda like a dirtbike on pavement... ? Not sure how to answer that any better. It's not made or used for many miles on road. Just a way to get from trail to trail legally without use of truck or trailer.

I dual sported an XR400 and it was great. Was actually more stable than my KLR was on the hwy (go figure) and handled like a dream on the dirt. The only thing that killed me was the kick start.

Did a trip to Mexico on the XR400. Rode from McAllen, TX to the Los Ebanos Crossing (which has a hand drawn ferry btw) down to Montemorelos, NL, Mexico where we got into the mountains... About 4-5 hrs on they hwy. Did fine at 60mph droning.

Then we did three days of exploring in the mountains.... I got sick at the end of the trip (ear infection) and couldn't keep my balance and was really weak. Slept for the fourth day.

I'm seriously considering doing a similar build but with a WR450F. Large capacity tanks available, great suspension, great power. ELECTRIC START. Or, I may just go with a WR250R and do without the power... unsure yet.

Oh and I did a few roads on the XR400 that I had done on the XR650L and it performed only slightly poorer on the hwy and way better on the dirt.

Check out this bit a friend just found while doing some research.

RECORDS, SPORTS AND LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL: AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE VESPA

The Vespa also has a racing career behind it. In Europe back in the Fifties, it took part, often successfully, in regular motor cycle races (speed and off-road), as well as unusual sporting ventures.

In 1952 the Frenchman Georges Monneret built an "amphibious Vespa" for the Paris-London race and successfully crossed the Channel on it.

The previous year Piaggio itself had built a Vespa 125cc prototype for speed racing, and it set the world speed record for a flying kilometre at an average of 171.102 km/h.

The Vespa also scored a great success at the 1951 "International 6 Days" in Varese, winning 9 gold medals, the best of the Italian motorcycles.

That same year saw the first of innumerable rallies with the Vespa: an expedition to the Congo, which was to be the first of a series of incredible journeys on a scooter that was intended primarily to solve the problems of urban and intercity traffic.

Giancarlo Tironi, an Italian University student, reached the Arctic Circle on a Vespa.

The Argentine Carlos Velez crossed the Andes from Buenos Aires to Santiago del Chile.

Year after year, the Vespa gained popularity among adventure holiday enthusiasts: Roberto Patrignani rode one from Milan to Tokyo; Soren Nielsen in Greenland; James P. Owen from the USA to Tierra del Fuego; Santiago Guillen and Antonio Veciana from Madrid to Athens; Wally Bergen on a grand tour of the Antilles; the Italians Valenti and Rivadulla in a tour of Spain; Miss Warral from London to Australia and back; the Australian Geoff Dean took one on a round-the-world tour. Pierre Delliere, Sergeant in the French Air Force, reached Saigon in 51 days from Paris, going through Afghanistan. The Swiss Giuseppe Morandi travelled 6,000 km, much of it in the desert, on a Vespa he had bought in 1948. Ennio Carrega went from Genoa to Lapland and back in 12 days. Two Danish journalists Elizabeth and Erik Thrane, a brother and sister, reached Bombay on a Vespa. And it is impossible to count the many European scooter riders who have reached the North Cape on their Vespas.

Few know that in 1980 two Vespa PX 200s ridden by M. Simonot and B. Tcherniawsky reached the finishing line of the second Paris-Dakar rally. Four-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Henri Pescarolo helped the French team put together by Jean-François Piot. The Vespa continues to travel: in 1992 Giorgio Bettinelli, writer and journalist, left Rome on a Vespa and reached Saigon in March 1993. In 1994-95 he rode a Vespa 36,000 km from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. In 1995-96 he travelled from Melbourne to Cape Town - over 52,000 km in 12 months. In 1997 he started out from Chile, reaching Tasmania after three years and 150,000 km on his Vespa across the Americas, Siberia, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. All in all, Bettinelli has travelled 254,000 km on a Vespa.

OK, so this part is not so impressive: "The Argentine Carlos Velez crossed the Andes from Buenos Aires to Santiago del Chile."

That particular pass is no big deal unless he didn't take the main road and went over one of the little horse trails. The rest of these accomplishments, however, are pretty darn cool.

Next big trip is Mexico this Nov./ Dec....if all goes well, down Baja and back then around the coastal plain of mainland Mexico, crossing over in the sate of Chiapas. Lots to do along the way...including checking out the coffee co-op I buy my green beans from in Chiapas and picking up some amber and a few other stones to help pay for the journey...:sombrero:

My wife will probably join me in Tulum for a week where we will rent a cabina.:snorkel:

Happy trails.

So tell us more about the 350 suzuki. Kinda' small for an Expo. ride, no?
Is it elect. start & air cooled? What does it weigh? Wouldn't you rather have a
- 1200cc, 600+lb Behemoth to throw around & slog through the mud??
BTW - is that the one those guys did "Mondo Enduro" on, you know -

Well AZ BMW good questions.
I had a BMW GS and while I enjoyed it I also was restricted to where I could go off road so I sold it and bought the Suzuki. The DR350 is a very capable bike and yes its aircooled, 6 speed transmission, will cruise all day at 65mph, 4.5 gallon tank, approx 325lbs and the best part is the 65 to 74mpg. I added a seat concepts seat and a small windscreen and now I'm able to ride all day in comfort.
I prefer the electric start as I hate kick starting a stalled bike on a slippery hill.
The Mondo Enduro team did in fact ride DR350's around the world and with only few problems (great book, every adventure bike rider should read it).

I see you are in Arizona so drop me line and maybe we'll go for a ride sometime.

I had a BMW GS and while I enjoyed it I also was restricted to where I could go off road so I sold it and bought the Suzuki.

I went the other way on this trade-off.

I spent many years and many thousands of miles off-road on DR350 / DRZ400 bikes. I had the dual sport and dirt models of both bikes.

I ended up buying the BMW 1150 GSA so I could show my wife some of the places I was seeing on dirt bikes that she would otherwise never have the opportunity view and experience.

The DRs have bulletproof motors that pull all day long and just never give up.

The DRs are relatively heavy compared to some similar bikes, but are usually less costly than those alternatives.

The DRs respond very well to:
- Aftermarket shock (get one built to your specific, fully-loaded for overlanding weight)
- Fork suspension kits (same rules apply for weight and your desired style of riding)
- Proper tire selection for your intended riding area
- Gel seat
- Light loads

I highly recommend an electric start model. It will make you a better rider. No, it won't really change you into a rocket-ship over the boulder fields, but it will make you much more confident and save you a ton of energy, especially when you kill the bike on a goat trail with a sheer cliff off your left foot. Make sure to put a kick-start kit on it for when you leave the lights on and run down the battery.

In my experience, if you change the oil & filter regularly (at or before recommended intervals), use high quality aftermarket components and don't abuse it (beyond normal dirt bike abuse), you will have a very long and mutually fortuitous relationship with your DRs.

Of all the DRs I owned, this was probably my favorite. I rode this bike down the length of Baja, border to Cabo, three times. Those rides were offroad, and I was riding with Malcolm Smith, so you can imagine the route.

http://www.hackneystravel.com/photos/2002-04-DSC03536-edit-800.jpg
Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico

Not every single kilometer of it was Baja 1000 course, endless whoops, rocky single track and single track through deep, soft sand twisting around jumping cactus -- but it sure felt like it.

http://www.hackneystravel.com/photos/2002-04-DSC03530-800.jpg
Baja single track

From the purely riding standpoint, the DR is not the perfect bike for this type of route, something lighter probably would be.

However, from the overlanding perspective, it is nearly the perfect bike. The DRs were the only bikes to make it on this ride end to end, for sure, with dead-certain reliability.

The other bikes I rode with over the five years I did this ride really struggled to survive if they were Blue or Orange. The red bikes did OK, but the 650 Hondas are a handful in these conditions unless you're a really big guy and also a good rider.

In 2004 I had the chance to do a direct comparison between the DRZ400 and the GS1150A. We were between the Middle East and Japan, so I accompanied two friends on the Continental Divide Ride (CDR).

While the big GS did feel a lot lighter than it did two-up, fully loaded for unsupported travel in the 3rd world, it was not the optimum bike for the CDR.

It's the age-old thing: just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Can the GS keep up with a couple of dirt bikes riding off-road from Canada to Mexico on the CDR?

http://www.hackneystravel.com/photos/2004-07-17-IMG_1196-800.jpg
Along the Continental Divide (we did not do the spray painting)

Well, technically, yes.

Along the way, however, Bob, one of my riding buddies, swears I had the GS laid out horizontal in mid-air over a boulder field. That was just one of many instances of wrestling the GS down that trail.

The DRs, meanwhile, were the perfect bike bike to ride between the start and stop.

http://www.hackneystravel.com/photos/2004-07-cdr-begin-finish-800.jpg
Head and tail of the CDR

The GS was bearable on the CDR and super-comfy riding to and from the borders. My buddies suffered getting to and from the borders but had a super time on the CDR on their DRs.

The GS, however, can do the one thing that was possible, but tough on a DR.

Can you put your wife on the back and ride two-up, off-road through central Mexico on a DR?

http://www.hackneystravel.com/photos/2001-07-16-Dsc02078-edit-800.jpg
At the end of a day of riding, central Mexico (this was a friend's bike, ours had the dual sport rear sub-frame and passenger pegs)

Well, technically, yes. But, it's not a viable thing for world exploration, at least for us.

So, we switched over to the GS, and that worked out very well for my goal of taking my wife places she wouldn't otherwise see.

Great looking 1150GS, I occasionally miss my GS mostly at the end of a ride when I want to ride the interstate home but it was just way to big for the trails I'm currently exploring. If you ever get up Prescott way give me a holler and we can do some trail riding, I have a couple friends who still own GS's.

I really think it's too bad they don't make an updated DR350. People who have owned them wax poetically about their charms. Although I've never ridden one, based upon the reports and stats, I can see why.

I had a DR-Z 400S. It's a good bike and I think a great bike for the right niche. But I think that niche is pretty narrow and an updated DR350 (or a revised DRZ) would be better and appeal to a larger audience.

The two bikes have almost identical dry weights.
The DR-Z makes about 5 more HP (a good thing).
The DR350 has 6 speeds (an even better thing IMHO)
The DR350 has a 35" set height, versus the DR-Z's 37". This turns off A LOT of people.
I won't get into the air cooled vs water cooled as both are very reliable bikes.
DR-Z has a more modern suspension, but I think travel is actually similar.

I guess the frustration for me with my DR-Z was that they seemed to make it more dirt worthy (and likely succeeded to some degree), but they actually made it somewhat worse on the street. Frustrating, because I don't think they really needed to. I was forever cursing my DR-Z's street manners at speed and longed for a 6th gear. I never took full advantage of the suspension (and I think most riders wouldn't).

Now the fact is, when I bought my DR-Z I had been shopping for a DR650. And I should have bought a DR650 for the riding I do instead of trying to make the DR-Z into one. But I thought I could make it a lighter alternative to the DR650. And there's the rub, because I think there are more riders like me that would like a lighter DR650 alternative and will never use the DR-Z's advantages.

Now if I lived 30 minutes from wide open spaces, I could see myself getting a DR-Z again (or WR). But for most of the world who buy DS bikes to occasionally get off road but mostly commute and ride street, the DR350 is better suited.

I don't mean to bash the DR-Z. But even today, if I wanted a bike for a week long DS trip that included stretches of highway and mild single-track - I think I'd take a DR350 over the DR-Z (if I didn't already have my X-Ch). If I wanted to spend the day on more aggressive singletrack that was a half hour road ride away - I'd take the DR-Z again.

Unfortunately, the DR200 (also a good bike) really isn't a substitute for the DR350 either.

I could not agree more with what you wrote, I think Suzuki could make a 6 speed DRZ500 with a larger tank and have a real dual sport. I also felt BMW was heading in a good direction with the Xchallenge and have no idea why they stopped, maybe it had something to do with the Husqvarna purchase.
I wish the DR350 had a bit more punch for highway travel but I do not want the added weight of a 650 but I love that 6th gear.

It's really a shame the DS market is so small in the US. It seems to be even further divided as some folks want a pseudo-dirt bike, some just a commuter, and some want more of an adventure/travel bike. But it would be so simple to broaden the DR-Z's scope by adding a 6th gear or even just a wider ratio 5 speed with a few more HP. The 3x3 and re-jet alone makes a world of difference on that bike.

I'm not sure why BMW abandoned the XChallenge so quickly, even with the dismal sales. I guess they felt it wasn't worth it if they couldn't sell them for $8000. I will say this: I love my mine. It essentially does everything a DR-Z or DR650 will do, and typically better. I paid $5995 for it brand new with a 3 year warranty. I was set on a DR650, but don't regret spending the few hundred more for the XChallenge. Same thing for Husky TE-610/630. Great bikes at $6000. At $8000? Not so much.

But I bet Suzuki could build a 6 speed, EFI, DRZ-450 for a grand less and it would be rock-solid reliable.

I bet any of the four big Japanese manufacturers could, and maybe one day they will. I think that Yamaha is aware of the depend for something in the 450-600 range for this, If they would do for the WR450 what they did for the WR250, I think that they would sell even more of that hot little bike.

It's really a shame the DS market is so small in the US. It seems to be even further divided as some folks want a pseudo-dirt bike, some just a commuter, and some want more of an adventure/travel bike.

We had lunch with the top two guys at BMW Motorad U.S. last year. At that time, the GS product line accounted for about 6 out of every 10 units sold in the North American market.

I bet any of the four big Japanese manufacturers could, and maybe one day they will.

During the last downturn, the U.S. motorsports market shrank by 50% (more in some categories). Some of the brands barely survived. Suzuki brought in zero bikes for a full model year.

At about the same time, the kid-size bikes and quads were outlawed due to lead, leading to additional massive financial losses in the immediate term, and worse, the choking off of the new customer pipeline (start them young, keep them for decades).

There is a fundamental break-even point for number of units sold where it makes sense to bring in a bike to the highly regulated North American market. That break-even point varies by manufacturer due to their different cost structures. One cost that is shared by all factories is the warehousing and distribution costs for parts, which they must keep on hand for many years for discontinued and past models due to U.S. law.

Bottom line: It's a lot harder for a U.S. market moto product marketing manager or executive to get a bike developed and brought in and marketed and promoted and sold and supported and serviced and litigated than you may think. It's especially a lot harder when this market has shrunk drastically and, due to demographics, is almost certain to never recover to past sales levels. The factories' product planning today is driven by markets that are growing, not graying.

The good news: dual sport bikes cross multiple slices of the remaining, shrinking demographic pie and adventure bikes are one of the few healthy segments.

But, enough of all of that. We've gone and hijacked a great thread. Back to photos of expedition bikes... :)

I've had both at the same time of various vintages.

If you live in a state that has tough licensing requirements, such as CA, the S is much easier to deal with in that regard. CA checks the VIN number to see if the bike qualifies. Recent vintage Es do not.

We always stripped off everything we could from the S models, added an aftermarket shock, fork kit, etc. By the time we were done the S was still heavier than the E, but not by much. IIRC, we got one S down to within ~10lbs of a stock E.

If you look closely the motard actually has a flat. It happened to be only the first flat of the weekend. It was due to hitting a rut that popped out on us at 50mph :Wow1: We replaced the 17" tube with our spare 21" tube. Got over 200 miles out of it the rest of the weekend. On our last ride before coming home we decided to hit Lippincott mine. At the end of the most difficult part of the ascent the 21" tube pops. Very long story short, we patched the holes and continued. About 10 miles later it fails again. While trying to put all the weight on the front wheel he rode the flat back to camp over 50 miles. The Michelin Pilot Power held extremely well and protected the rim beyond expectation over the rest of the washboards, rocks, ruts, silt and sand. Needless to say I ordered a Michelin Pilot Power to replace my rear for my SM wheelset. That tire did excellent inflated and deflated :sombrero: My buddy kicked but with that setup. I don't think we ever would have encountered any flats if it wasn't for that initial rut.

Lessons learned: Bring tubes for every size tire if car camping with the bikes. And bring more patches.

We faced A LOT of adversity this trip. We overcame all the adversity and it made for an unforgettable, excellent adventure! :bike_rider::bike_rider::bike_rider::bike_rider:

Chuck (AZCCP) - can you tell me about the fuel bottle holder on the right/rear of your KTM 690? I'm looking for a convenient way to carry a bit of reserve fuel without going to a big after-market tank.

Thanks,
Steve

I'll likely limit my travels on this little jewel to the Geo. Washington National Forest...

Another local C-list find...just too clean and fun to pass up!

Neat features:

1: Trans has two ranges. In High...speeds of 45mph. In Low...I can reach maybe 25 in fourth gear...but this thing has real pull in the low range.
2: Four speed with an automatic clutch.
3: "Canteen" looking grey tank on rear is a reserve gas tank...fill it and dump in main tank under seat when needed....and at about 90-100MPG...that will take awhile.
4: "Mars Orange" is the OEM color...gotta love the 70's!
5: Rear cargo rack/seating area.
5: Street legal and tagged!

I'm not usually a big fan of Givi luggage, at least on "ADV" style bikes as they are too curvy for my tastes, but that is a really good looking setup!

Thank ya, I am really happy with them. I have two of those "trailer document tubes" to mount to the back of them to hold 30oz MSR fuel bottles.Only having an idiot light dosen't give me a warm and fuzzy, so I like to carry extra when I head out west....lol.

So mine isn't really an adventure bike, but I do have many adventures riding it. I rode out east of Austin today - the weather was less than beautiful, but I enjoyed the ride. The wildflowers are really starting to come in and it's going to be really, really beautiful very soon. Anyway, here's a pic I took of my ride with a few flowers in the background. It's an 07 V Star 1300 that I'm modding as I can afford to. So far I've added the windscreen, the bags, a very nice Mustang seat, highway pegs and most recently a Cobra exhaust. Next will be a big air kit and possibly a PCM. I am getting very conflicting advice as to if a PCM is necessary.

Ride with the same 2 or 3 guys every year in the last week of OCT. or first week of Nov. Perfect weather in Baja that time of year IMHO. I had a 950 ADV before the SE. It was a great bike but the SE is just that little bit better in the dirt.
