passed a few bikes on the road last week all loaded down with gear. I get a rush from it every time. I've searched here and don't find many photos. Can you all post some for me to drool over. Thanks

Here are a couple old ones of mine to get it going.

3 day trip over to Flaming Gorge

Ugly as all get out....sure was fun.

Doing the single track thing for awhile, then I am getting a big bike. Maybe the new KTM 690 will be out when I am ready. Next fall, we are doing a dual sport ride in Copper Canyon. A little pre-run for when we do the "big" mainland Mexico trip.

My new single track weapon. :)

actually a gravel forest svc road... had been grades with lots of spots of deep gravel and soft shoulders.. hit the gravel in a turn doing about 50, and lost it over the bank and into a big *** boulder.. .over the bars and on the back, bummer.

I've found for outback riding the biggest heaviest bike I would take would be a KLR, or maybe a F650, both heavier than I like if I'm doing more than pretty tame dirt roads.

A good lighter bike from a 250 to 400 would do fine as well, though might be challenged to run 70 on the highway, small price to pay if you plan to do a lot of rough offroad to make that easier.

Better to use a bike that weighs in at closer to 300lb like a Honda WR, XL, DR650, KTM LC4 or so with a 5 gallon tank, and pack light. For me if I'm over 30lbs of gear I'm too heavy.

Makes for a much more pleasant ride that way, and lets you go pretty much anywhere. Not to mention picking up heavier bikes after a wipeout (which is more likely with a heavier or overpacked bike) can be a real bear when your wiped out too, or hurt.

I like to pack using a lot of the same practices an ultra lightweight backpacker does.

I also will never own a dual sport with hard side cases for luggage, I've seen too many very nasty leg breaks from folks stabbing a foot down in a rough spot and having the case hit the back of their legs, and guys going down and getting nasty breaks. Maybe soft side bags like "dirt bagz" brand but hard side cases and dirt riding do not mix that well IMO.

Hi all, Brian in NM here with some pix of my current bikes. I am closing in on 64 Y.O. and I find the dirt is not so intriguing after 40 years+ of riding. I sure do love my traveling though and have toured a great deal...mostly on pavement any more...lots of gravel and very little off-road.
First is my main ride for long several month trips with my dog...I camp always...none of this "Motel camping". I am a dedicated sidecarist these days.
Second is a pic of our two tiddlers for any off roading and trail riding we do and I actually use one for all my around town driving yearround.
The third is my Funduro (you can see my wifes behind it) which we use for trips without the dog.

Nice expedition bikes, but here's an alternative approach: The bike on expedition. :)

http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp283/mhiscox01/JoeHaulerwithTLR200.jpg

Can't say enough good about this old Honda TLR200 sorta-trials bike as a fun thing to take on your expedition. Doesn't weigh half what most "real" expedition bikes weigh, making it trivial to get on and off the rack, and light enough it doesn't affect handling. Serves as the go-for-help vehicle should the main rig get stranded, great for riding around the campground or making a little run into town (fully street legal), and much easier to ride on a trail or fire road than a quarter-ton adventure bike. The point being, at the cost of some lost departure angle, I get to have a whole lot of the fun parts of backcountry riding while still having the comfort and weathertightness of an enclosed vehicle.

Yeah, I know it's not the same thing (I also own an ex-Iron Butt Concours and an XR600R), but I'm convinced this "light bike on the truck" approach has a lot to recommend it, so I figured I'd post up a picture.

And yes it feels like a toy after the GS... I'd guess that it is the better part of 200# lighter.

That is nice in Red, one of the two reasons that kept me from getting a KLK was they're only available in Kawie green in Thailand. How's your mileage, pretty great for a 250 isn't it?

With mine I find a tank bag and a rear 30L dry bag allows plenty of storage. Though in the land of cheap accommodation and dinning, there’s no requirement to carry camping gear.

Heyduke, my wife and I both read your wife's entertaining thread about learning to ride. My wife is 5' too so your missus is an inspiration to her. How much did you have to lower that bike so she could flat foot it like I'm seeing in the pictures?

At first, we slid the forks up about an inch, and the rear preload all the way out (no easy way to lower the XT at the rear). We also cut the seat foam down by about 1 1/2 inches.

As she became more confident, we added rear preload and slid the forks back down in the triple clamps. She is now comfortable with it at stock height, but with the seat cut down. She can't exactly "flat foot" it like in the pics above, but close.

After a couple of years of ALOT of off road riding, she is out-riding the bike, wishing for better suspension and more power. Right now we're trying to figure out what to do... find a different bike to make work for her, or spend alot on this one and try to creat the "ultimate" XT225. Too bad there aren't any decent options for a 5'0" person out there. That being said, the XT225 is a great bike- she's just asking too much of it now.

Not low enough. Plus, the kick start is a deal breaker for her- well at least on the XR. She has to use her whole body to jump on the kickstarter to get it started. lol

Here is the bike I sold last year to pay help pay my bills as my business fell apart around me. Hardly seems worth it now, since it only paid for about two months worth because I "short saled" it. It had a hard seat and gave me a back ache after a half hour of riding, not that that kept me out of the saddle for hours on end.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3610/3334773397_38db782818.jpg?v=0

Here is the bike I sold to get the SV1000. In hindsight, the SV650 was my favorite bike ever. Its torque curve is nearly plateau flat with instant power, but not overkill. Also, it was incredibly light. The maneuverability was awesome. The handling was near telepathic. I would love to get another, but my next bike will be more for touring. I am thinking a V-strom when I get back on my feet.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3561/3335608308_ce44782506.jpg?v=0

The blue bike was my friend Ken's. He crashed it going into a corner too timidly. Slipped on some gravel, panicked and went flying. This is one reason I want out of sport bike riding. Too many high speed crashes. Lost one of our group a couple years back going 120 over a ascending-descending corner. Two more friends crashed the year previously. They were fine, the bikes not so much. The only humor was that one of the bikes, a CBR1000 had a water sealed battery case and we could see the headlight underwater in the Mississippi river.

Edit: Speaking of the SV650, this guy (http://www.motocorse.com/pd_main.php?mode=album&album=Special%2FSuzuki+SV650+Enduro+by+Gaspare+Mom esso) had converted his into an enduro. I love the look of this bike and may try to emulate one day. The engine of the SV650 is superb. On that little thing I could out ride guys/poseurs on liter bikes. I imagine that this would be a pretty good expo-style dual sport set-up if a luggage rack were to be added.http://www.motocorse.com/pd/albums/Special/Suzuki%20SV650%20Enduro%20by%20Gaspare%20Momesso/suzuki_sv650_enduro_1.jpg

This is my brothers BMW 1200 GS I think it is?
All set up with GPS, air compressor to air back up after airing down, and a lot more.

Here's some pics from this past month's cross-country (eastern NC to Idaho and back) on my 08 Wee-strom. Only issue was a flat tire near Denver, but I switched to Heidenau K60s and those things are amazing BEASTS! and they wear better than the Bridgestones! :victory:

200km per day through the worst off-road conditions.

Yeah, that's a trail through a swamp with a "Corduroy Bridge". No frame, just a deck floating on the bog.

R LeF, have you packed it for an overnighter?

I haven't yet, but sort of want to and sort of don't.

Truth be told, I want the Mrs to follow me around with van support so I can sleep in the pop top.:sombrero:

Like yours, my bike is not geared for the highway. And my front knob is way to soft of a compound for asphalt. (Running a Pirelli MT trials tire on the rear).

This is actually me and railbat Brian exploring with the bike on the back of my van. Came to some nasty stuff, so I took the bike off the back to scout out the rest of the road to see if it was worth taking the van thru the nasty stuff and ended up finding the coolest road with great views, including this bridge over a really cool creek. I ended up ridin and he chased in my van.

I guess I'm hesitant to pound my body on the Gas Gas for two days in a row broken up by only a night's sleep in a tent. I'm well into my comfort lovin 40's, man.

No packing for overnight camping. Always return to base. Carrying gear on that bike would start to have the suck pretty quick. I'm getting ready for my second run of Corduroy Enduro next weekend. 170km one day, 15 minutes service and Parc Ferme overnight. Camp out in the trailer, cold engine start in the morning, and another 170km. Yeehaw. :D

Just a quick trip meeting friends in a couple different places in Utah. Five days 1800 miles.

First I had to drone along on the 15 to Washington, UT. I had pre-ordered a new set of tires at Pro Cycle Sports to be waiting for me. I can't say enough about everyone at Pro Cycle Sports, greast prices... nice people and had me ready to go in about an hour (After I pulled my own wheels they offered to mount the tires for free).

One reason was, the 525 has "longer legs" than the XR 400. Wider gearing (6 speeds) makes it more capable for longer, self-supported dirt expeditions. I'll be adding more fuel capacity (has about 140 mile range now) and a Giantloop bag for luggage.

I think OJ should have included the GL bag in their test.

I slowed down a couple times to make sure the bag was still on my bike... I could not feel it at all. Unless you like to bring a lot of stuff I would try the Coyote (30l) and on those odd times that you need a little more room you can strap an extra bag (or your tent) to the out side of it. IMO the Great Basin (40l) is a bit too large.

I havent used a GL bag, but I dont think I would be interested, honestly. I put a lot of miles on my KLR with a wolfman alpha bag on the back. The alpha has a similar design as the GL bags. But the rule of thumb is to keep your weight down low to keep you COG right.

Last time I checked most of our bikes are quite tall. My point being, some sort of saddle bags are the way to go (for me at least). I love my dirtbagz, although now I need another set after doing 3 lowsides on them, and forgetting to clip one side to the rack, I drug the one bag along a gravel road at about 60mph. :coffeedrink:

What I would like to see is the Dirtbags setup with a waterproof construction more like the Ortlieb or the Wolfman Expedition saddle bags. Yet, I'll probably buy dirtbags again.

traveltoad
11-11-2009, 03:16 PM
I agree with your logic. I had DirtBagz on my SE for most of the last year. I had a BBriggs rack to support the DirtBagz that kept them low and forward for better weight balance. It was a great set up that worked very well. I spoke to a few people with the GL bag but could not figure out why anyone would want the weight any heigher on the bike. And remember the KTM 950SE is as tall and heavy as they (dirt bikes) come.

Then, after significant peer pressure, I decided to try one. In a word... AMAZING. The DirtBags/rack set up felt really good on the bike. The GL bag doesn't feel like anything on the bike. Not a subtle difference.... an amazing difference. On top of that, even though the GL Coyote and the DirtBagz are both 30l, I can fit more into the GL bag. I guess because of it's shape.

Yeah the GL business is an afterhours deal for them thus far (they have real jobs).

I don't have any photos of what was in my bag this past weekend... but the list included: sleeping bag, small Thermarest, bivy, Cooking pot, cup, stove, stove fuel, shoes, a little food and coffee, tube, clothes (pants / sweater / socks / underwear / 3 shirts), water bottle, coffee filter holder, plate

One can easily strap a small bag to the outside (like a tent) of the GL is more space is needed inside.

Not to butt in on the Coyote topic but I have some images to answer questions.

My friend Steve on his Factory KTM 690 Rally bike, his brother Pete and his wife Gwen went for their first non-supported ride a few weeks back. We all had the Coyote and 3 of us used the Fandango tank bags as well.

There is a ton more info here: http://www.giantloopmoto.blogspot.com/

I've been out for 9 days with the Coyote down into Nevada from my house in Bend, OR and many shorter, multi-day, un-supported rides pounding the crap out of the kit. No racks, no melting gear and the dirty little secret is, the Coyote is like an 'air bag' that will actually defend your bike in the inevitable get-off.

I decided my F650 wasn't enough bike for me (based on absolutely nothing since it is an amazing long distance machine) and true to form, decided I needed something else. I settled on a BMW airhead of some sort, I originally panned to find some kind of bastardized /6 or older that I could pick up cheap, but then my ultimate dream bike fell into my lap. Thanks to my dad for finding and working the deal for this beauty.

Nice!!!

I have one of those too. Instead of "Dual Sport" rides, we dub them "Cruel Sport". Very little pavement, a bunch of miles, dirt roads, technical single track, free riding, jumping, huge drops, etc. Make ya earn that beer at the end of the day.

Trail Tech does great work for stators and HID lights. I am thinking LEDs are the wave of the future though.

:D Nice bike! Yeah, that tank is a monster but I wouldn't have it any other way. Being able to ride 400+ miles and not think about getting fuel is very nice. Great for those trips to get away from it all.

Very cool. Did you make that tank yourself?

Back in Germany, a friend of mine and myself constructed two of those tanks. Unfortunately that was 13 years ago (pre-digital age...) therefore there are not too many pictures available.
We both owned the same type of bikes and planed to travel across Africa. But at different times. Back then, our bikes were fairly new to the market and people couldn't believe that we would do that to our bikes :ylsmoke:
Anyhow, by the time I left for my trip, my bike was 3 years old and already had 100.000km on the clock:bike_rider: About 4000km into my trip, in Mauretania, my bike crapped out on me in the middle of the Sahara desert... Bummer! Brought he bike to Dakar. Visited the start of the Dakar-Dakar Rally and after 3 months I booked a flight home.
Anyhow, that bike was amazing! Too bad they are not sold in North America.

After our trips, we sold those tanks and I'm proud to say that they are both traveling the world!

Cheers,

You know, I am not sure what risers they are. A few people have seen them and called them Rally Risers but not sure what that means. I personally like the Rox Risers that allow just about infinite adjustment of the bars.

No stabilizer on this one, although I had them on both my previous LC4's. Colin over at Stenhouse Racing (http://www.stenhouseracing.com/) makes a really nice setup and knows his KTMs. I might put one on in the future, but not in the budget right now.

I bought this beauty with 8500 miles on it. I can't think of a single thing it needs. Came with a bunch of stuff not even mounted on the bike... Touratech luggage rack extension, TT headlight guard, skid plate, brand new set of tires, suitcase racks, loud airhorn (always wanted one of these!), speed bleeders on the forks, the bar risers, a better looking recovered seat, a better looking high fender, probably some other stuff I am forgetting.

Can't wait for the weather to break for her maiden voyage tomorrow. Supposed to FINALLY have a nice sunny day here.

Not totally an "expedition" bike, but more of an "adventure" bike. This is my first dual sport and despite the street oriented tires that are on it currently, it's a BLAST. 2000 Super Sherpa with 5800 miles.

I've been building this bike up over the winter in pursuit of the ultimate overlanding bike. It's a 2004 KTM 950 Adventure. I bought it last spring, rode it for the summer, did a few trips and I am now working on fixing it up a bit more to my liking. This is how it stands as of today.

http://64.136.20.22/2637879_l.JPG

Last year it did a trip up in Northern Quebec TRIP REPORT (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=506183). Did the Trans Taiga Rd and a few other remote backroads. This year it's off to do the Trans Labrador Highway and the T'Rail across Newfoundland.

Recent modifications done
Wider foot pegs
Painted body
New GPS
Longer shift lever
Giant Loop Great Basin bag (replaced hard panniers)
Single low side exhaust
Black Dog skid plate (modified for exhaust)
and a few other bells and whistles

Modifications to come
Rear aluminum auxilary fuel tank (extra 8 liters)
Rear aluminum tank for oil and water storage
and a few other bells and whistles

I went threw several dual sport bikes before ending up with this one. Others were either to light for long distance riding or to heavy for offroading. This bike seems to be the perfect mix :ylsmoke:

i went through a few bikes looking for "the one" like you did. turns out the only way to get it is to build it. so i have a just legal dirtbike and building from that, i'm not interested in long slab rides so it was an easier pick than yours. i like to base camp from the truck and explore big loops, or put together multi day big dirt mile rides with slab connections.

I had her ride on the 640 with me..... DUH!

Well, besides that, here are the two main details that made a difference to me. The seat is more level than the XRL- which dips towards the gas tank. On the XRL, I am forced into the gas tank.... which isnt good for my manly bits. The passenger foot pegs are a couple of inches lower and slightly farther back than the XRL. My wife's feet, especially with riding boots on, were digging into the back of my leg. OK, she has big fit!

Overall is does weigh more but the 1150 seems to be better balanced. The 1200 always felt...not sure how to put it but awkward I guess. The 1200 does have more power but not enough to make up for the lack of....FUN. The 1150 is just plain funner (haha I know not proper English)!!!! It has this weired feeling of being more planted, I know that's probably gravity, but just has a better feel. Also LOVE the fact that there is no CANBUS system. Adding electrical farkels to the 1200 is a pain unless you add a fuse box.

The only real thing I could think of that if it were possible is to take the non-servo brake system from the 09 and replace it with the servo assisted on the 04. Although I could honestly say I have never read or seen the servo system break, that mechanical whine make me feel as though I could break it, say sitting at a stop light and holding the brake for a long time.

I really think it comes down to personal preference. Kinda like running shoes, everyone swears the ones they own are the best, but probably not the best for me.

Oh and the 1150 is mine...not BMW Financial's. Sold my KTM 640 and my Burgman 650 to get it. Down to one bike that does it all.....and couldn't be happier.

Did I confuse you more.:ylsmoke:

I finally was united with my R100GS Paris Dakar about a month ago. I've done about 7000 miles on it since then. It is in pretty good shape for a 20 year old machine with 67k miles on the clock. I've got several hundred in parts coming in the mail to make it like new. I'm kicking around the idea of a frame off restoration with custom paint (thinking green/silver to replace the red/white with silver frame and polished wheels) this winter if my other bike project doesn't work out. A new set of Happy Trails Teton's ( powdercoated silver) are also in the mail. Until the stuff arrives, I'm just having fun letting this bike take me wherever I want to go. I've ridden it in five states and two provinces and burned through four tires so far and have lived off of it for three weeks on (and off) the road. I think it's a keeper.

After fighting the size and weight of my R1150GS above timberline in Colorado I decided that I needed a smaller bike for that kind of riding. Since I'm a BMW addict, I really had only one choice, the 650 XChallenge. And riding it in rough stuff is much easier than on the big GS. However, riding it on the road is sort of like going 60 mph on a sawhorse.

over the last couple of years I've done more traveling on this than in my Cruisers

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2343/2218329612_39bb91be4a.jpg

and my "adventure" bike. Anyone that thinks this isn't an adventure bike - well, they've probably never done much touring on an AMF-era Shovelhead. THAT'S an adventure :xxrotflma

I ride an 83 Shovelhead Sportster and I understand...after 100 miles my back and kidneys are beaten to death and I need more gas! I love it though :victory:

Im not saying I haven't been down but its funny how many pictures there are of BMW's taking a nap on the side of the trail or road. If i could find it I have a great picture that was taken when I had a Beemer that was a little tired and wanted to nap in the dusty trail. I thought there were sand people standing over my bike we were sooo dirty.

Ha!
mine takes a nap one or two times per trip :victory:
one of the inherent flaws of the BMW- they will randomly decide to quit and take a nap :Wow1:

1st Post...

New Member...

Spent a few years running the Riders Association of Triumph out of the Indianapolis, Indiana dealership with my brother and at the time I was riding a 2001 Triumph Speed Triple...
http://www.triumphrat.net/photogallery/d/77594-2/adb.jpg

Then, in 2006, I bought a new Triumph Daytona 675 and spent some time doing a bit of sport touring...
http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr156/TripleThreat719/Tennessee%20Trip%20October%202009/DSCN5435.jpg

The sportbike led to the desire to ride at speeds that were not advisable on the street, so that led me to purchase another Daytona 675 and set it up as a dedicated track bike...

I've spent the last few years at the race track doing track days and honing my street riding skills...
http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr156/TripleThreat719/Mid%20Ohio%20Triumph%20675%20Trackday%20with%20STT %202008/MO092208MA_380.jpg

After earning my way up to the Advanced class at the track, I realized that I really wasn't enjoying the 675 Street Bike, so I sold it in favor of a bike that could handle a 30 day trip to Alaska via Canada during the summer of 2011 and that has led me here...
http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr156/TripleThreat719/Interlake%202010-7-17/Interlake2010-07-17-30.jpg

I've put a few hundred miles on it since I purchased it and have been having more fun than I did riding a sport bike on the street...

Looking forward to seeing the experiences of others on this forum... I also have a 2001 Land Rover Discovery that may eventually get modified to be more off road and expedition capable...

Cheers...

Jeff

My wife and her "newest" expedition bike- a Yamaha WR250r. Amazing bike- does great off road, will cruise 70 + mph on road all day, fuel injected, 26,000 mi. valve adjustments.... She loves it.

She's barely 5 ft tall, so it required "heroic lowering"- seat height is now 5" lower than stock.

July 1995? Solo trip to Death Valley - No fancy panniers (I converted my bicycle saddle bags for use on the motorcycle) No doohickey upgrade. No support like GPS or cel phone. Just enough luck...

This pic was taken around 0830hrs in the morning. It was already 85 degrees on my way out. I think this is Mahogany flat road after I camped at Wildrose peak.

My '89 Honda Transalp, just getting started with it. Hope to have the hard bags by end of the year for a trip to Big Bend in Feb '11. I like to plan way ahead.
