A good friend of mine just stopped by to show me the new 2008 Grand Cherokee Diesel. Very nice ride if i do say so myself. Thing purrs like a kitten (Doesnt even sound like a diesel) and it even had a little get up and go in her. Totally Mercedes engine bay.. (of course its a Merc. engine!) All in all, nice ride..very comfy inside and comes with a pretty big price tag. Notice the silly green cap for reminding people to put the correct fuel in! (says it on the fuel gauge too).

Nice.... I'm really looking forward to all of the German diesels coming our way in the next few years. Like the VW's that are all debuting at the Franfurt show right now. Who needs a hybrid?

Now, if they'd only put it in the JK. After riding in my buddy's with the 3.8 V-6, I'd pay the extra $3700 over the Rubicon price for a diesel.
What sort of MPG is that GC supposed to get?

That's exactly what we said! We'd buy one for sure if they do that.
Supposedly lifetime 18mpg it says on the Odometer when we were driving it around. Thing about the diesel is... whether your a heavy foot driver, grocery gettin' momma or towing a rig/boat behind it.. you'll get 18. We'll see....... my buddy went to get a rig and is towing it back with it today.

it's approved by CARB and all, it's just that we have a law here preventing the sales of new Diesel vehicles below a certain weight. That's why used Liberties with the CRD cost more than new ones here.

Couldn't you just purchase the vehicle in Nevada and bring it back to California to register it. Or does it have to be registered in Nevada first?

You have register it in another state and put a certain amount of miles on it before you bring it here. So i've heard.

7500 mi before registration in CA, that goes for any non-CA vehicle though.
My first vehicle was a diesel. 1986 Chevy Luv Diesel 4x4(Isuzu Mikado body style).
Burned 1 quart of oil every day, and the front tires went flat every other. My dad didnt want me going fast and he meant it. We swapped the engine out for a new J-spec and sold it about a year later.
I still kick myself in the butt over that one.

Fergie is right. You can buy it and register it out of state. I am not endorsing it (technically illegal to do so :D), but it is very easy to do. Then, once you have 7,501 miles, you can legally register it in CA.

For anyone interested, check out www.ausjeepoffroad.com
They have a very cool section for WJs, most with TDs!
There is also a company in TX that is converting WJs to diesel using the Euro, or South Asia variant with very good success.

He got 18mpg up there and 14 on the way back. Not very impressive. Said it towed fine, nothing out of the ordinary. It was funny cause he said the stupid back up sensor thingies kept going off everytime he backed up with the trailer attached. lol
