For those that haven't had the chance to walk through a slot canyon here are a few shots from a highly accessible and photographed one just outside of Page Arizona near Lake Powell.
A wide wash dumps into this narrow slot when it floods. Not a place you want to be when storms are nearby.

Once inside you wander through the narrow passageways cut out of the sandstone by the water and take in all the beauty of the constantly changing light.

December is slow for the wife and I, plus its probably a good time to down towards the Everglades because the bugs will be slowed down due to the colder weather.

Thanks for the kudos...I use a Nikon D700 and crop instead of stitch. I know a lot of people don't like HDR but I think it more accurately captures what I see. Again, thanks for the positive remarks. I've enjoyed looking through Brad's website and other's here on the forum are real inspirations...like LostCanadian, CCHOC, LaOutBackTrail, SMSLAVIN to name just a few.

BOHICA- what are you using to create your HDR's? I noticed some issues in a couple of your shots such as the tree in the Bryce Canyon shot and clouds in the others. Something to always be aware of when shooting multiple exposures is movement. Whether it is grass blades, tree limbs, or clouds- these movements between exposures affect your image and give tell-tell signs that it is HDR.
A couple ways to work around this is to do a faux HDR which is to use a single exposure- make a couple copies and adjust the copies to different exposures. This gives you a similar situation of taking multiple exposures but all of your images have clouds and other moving objects in the same place.
Another technique is manual blending multiple exposures in Photoshop rather than using a software program.
You have some great comps and have been blessed with some great light on your trip. Hope you can make the best out of your shots and get some images that you will be proud to print large and hang on your walls. Keep sharing your shots!

Very nice Bohica.
Sometimes noise is generated from the HDR processing and even more so if you have noise from higher ISO shots to begin with. If the Lightroom noise filter can't clean it up then I use the Noiseware Pro plug in on Photoshop that works pretty well.
I mention this because I really like this shot but the noise in the sky is distracting to me. I bet a pass through Noiseware would clean that up. :sombrero:

Nice shots Brad! I really hope to get down there in the near future. I only have one tip for you that would have helped these a bit, and it's your choice of aperture.:ylsmoke: I noticed what looked like diffraction killing the real resolution on a couple of these so I peaked at the metadata. If you'd like we can discuss it.
Tucson T4R
11-13-2011, 06:10 PM
I would enjoy hearing your feedback on the diffraction. Yep, all of these were taken with my 10-22 wide angle at F20. I thought I needed that small an aperture to get the depth of focus I was going for.
Discuss away. I would love to learn how to keep improving. :sombrero:
Another factor is these are all HDR processed followed by some noise reduction that I'm sure also softened the resolution some too.

On a cropped sensor, like the 7D with 18 megapixels and an ultra wide lens, you really don't need to go past F11-13, F16 would be my absolute max on a cropped sensor. Remember, the smaller the sensor the greater the natural depth of field. F20-22 is for something like a full framer, and even then only needed when you are dealing with extremes of perspective and distance, like this below where the lens was probably less than 6 inches from the ice.
http://www.trevorlbrown.com/Photography/Nature/DSC4278/1135124396_d3sPa-S-7.jpg
For a higher perspective like yours, if you place your center of focus properly I'm thinking a F7-9 range would have been sufficient, and would have kept the lens close to its peak, which I'm guessing is in the F5.6-7.1 range. It really is a tricky equation of distance to subjects, lens choice like wide to tele, capture format size from point and shoot to large format, and where you place your center of focus. As a rule of thumb though, at least with a cropped sensor, anything beyond F11-13 really starts to become a point of diminishing returns, where by any gain in depth of field due to smaller apertures is negated by a robbing of resolution due to diffraction. We could get a lot deeper into this, but for now that's kinda the Coles Notes version.

Thanks for sharing that Trevor. I've found after a lot of trial and error, that this is largely the case with FF cameras too. :)
On the 5dm2 with 17 -40mm, I am rarely if ever pushing f13.
The kicker for me, is the point of focus. Sometimes, " a third into the scene" is hard to decipher. :)

Actually that doesn't surprise me Joash. I'm not 100% on how it works but pixel density also plays a roll. A lot of Sony guys were grumbling about diffraction rearing its ugly head at f9-10 on the A77 because of the A77's pixel density.
As for focus, I think Aaron mentioned it before, but live view and/or the depth of field preview button can help quite a bit.

Trevor, back to the discussion on aperture settings. When I want to try to catch a star burst of the sun rising or setting across the horizon I was under the impression to get the best staring effect I need to stop all the way down to F20 or F22.
I have not tried to capture this effect on more open apertures. Was my understanding incorrect? Can the same staring effect be picked up at say f8?

Hey Brad,
Yeah small apertures are best for very pronounced star bursts, but you give up a considerable amount of resolving power by doing it. There's certainly a trade off.
You could always try a little test for yourself. Just take a couple controled shots at home of the same scene with varying apertures and look at the results. I'll bet F20-22 looks like mush compared to something in the F5.6-11 range.
I can get satisfactory sun burst results at around F11 with my D7000, albeit not quite as pronouced as yours above. Nice shot by the way.

I know my pics above are pretty cool.... but I know they certainly are not the pinnacle of this thread. Where did everyone go? Or did everyone get eaten by a turkey?

I actually was eaten by a turkey but I am recovering now. Playing with off camera flash opens up all kinds of artistic opportunities. It seems the flash may be bit bright on the first one. At least on my work laptop monitor her cheek and jaw seem a bit blown out. I like the little miss attitude shot but again I would either reduce the flash power or exposure just a bit to improve it. The direction of light is so important and I am not an expert but the shadow from her nose under her eye is distracting to me.
I like the fair ride shot. I keep saying I'm going to go play at the local fair but haven't made it out there yet.
Maybe others with more experience can provide more usable feedback.

Portraits are hard... that's something I struggle with a lot. I love candid shots, but none of my family acts natural when I bring the camera out. I think you did good there, getting the non-standard camera response with a good crop that made it interesting. One of my biggest challenges with shooting people indoors is lighting (because I hate flashes)... people either move too much, or the lighting looks funny.
Did you hand hold the night shot? Must have been a pretty high ISO? I was surprised I didn't see more noise.
Actually, I would have cropped that a little differently to get rid of some of the distraction.

Good point on the crop.
I did hand hold it. In a previous life I shot rifles competitively. ;) I think I had the ISO on 100, too.... forgot to check it. Lucky shot really. And I only took THAT shot at the festival.

The hydrant is cool, either change your dof and/or get rid of the windows in the background by changing the angle that you're shooting from. Although I bet you would have more of that tree in the background in the pic.

Tucson was socked in fog this morning so I hiked up into the Catalina mountains hoping to get some sweet shots when the fog lifted. I only got about 2 minutes of it opening up to a partial views and then the fog rolled back in and stole my views.

I went out camping and exploring this weekend and got what I think are a few good shots that may be worthy of this thread:
Of all the shots I took of the fire, I liked the composition of this one best... I think it has interesting negative space:
http://images.thedownings.us/tb/gwnf-dec-2011/1.jpg
This one was actually done with a 3-shot HDR:
http://images.thedownings.us/tb/gwnf-dec-2011/2.jpg
I liked the colors in this shot... maybe I should bring up the saturation a hair more? I'd like to bring out the sky.
http://images.thedownings.us/tb/gwnf-dec-2011/6.jpg
This one was also a HDR composite:
http://images.thedownings.us/tb/gwnf-dec-2011/9.jpg
I liked the "layers" of this photo, but it's otherwise a bit bland:

Good call, I took a few there, but it was more of a scouting trip for a landscape contest. I ended up taking the shot at a different location, across the county. Funny though, how sometimes a shot can look perfectly proportioned on the camera screen, then during later review, you realize it's a bit off.

Thanks guys, actually looking at a couple of them now I'm not feeling it,...and that is exactly why you don't work on images and post them when you're tired, ha. The iced rock is too close to the edge of the frame and in hindsight I think the sunrise is a little too much even though it was that colourful. It's distracting somewhat. Here is another take of the same rock shot only a couple minutes apart from the first but positioned slightly different and without the intense colour of the sunrise. The colour didn't last long and began to fade from the sky in this one and I think the highlights and tonalities roll off much nicer. I also lowered my position and moved the rock away from the edge of the frame making it a more central and prominent element,...as it should be IMO. Let me know what you guys think.
http://www.trevorlbrown.com/photos/i-zGdJHVg/0/XL/i-zGdJHVg-XL.jpg
There's also this one which I think works a bit better then the portrait orientation as well. Shot much lower, which hid the yellowish rock beneath the ice and simplified the colour palate somewhat. It also puts the viewer into the image better I feel. I also pulled down the saturation just a touch. I didn't add any in the original but felt there was a bit too much purple coming through. Again let me know what you think of these reworks.

Beautiful winter pictures Trevor- I liked the framing and composition on this the best , the two (spruce?) trees in the foreground on the right tied it together well- eyes went around and back again.

Thanks Joash,...they're white cedar I believe. The irony of this shot is that it's the warmest of the bunch in terms it's colour thanks to the orangy/redish rising sun coming out of the east lending a warmed up colour cast to everything, you can see the sun just catching the tops of the trees across the cove, but it was by far the coldest morning I was out in. Convincing myself to get out of my sleeping bag was the biggest challenge of that morning.

Thanks Brad and James-
This was the very last bit of light which occurs right as the sun drops below the horizon line. The water was indeed very calm as while we were at this location for about an hour only one boat passed by. In fact the entire time we were at Lake Powell (Lone Butte area and Alstrom Point) we only saw 3 boats total.

Looks delicious, nice dish and nice photo composition! My only criticism (and take this lightly, I'm no pro)... is to use a slightly deeper depth of field, so the entire food portion is in a bit sharper focus. I noticed my eyes instantly go to the shrimp, but then want to look at the sauce which is blurry.
Mmmm, shrimp...

A few of mine that I thought I'd share. I seem to be going through South American withdrawal this weekend, all my posted photos have been from my 2006 trip there (I've been four times and am planning trip five). I'll lay claim to these having had a tremendous amount of thought put into their framing, I'll leave the concept of whether they are artistic to others! :)

From Rio De Janeiro during Carivale a few years ago. I was focussing on trying to demonstrate movement through the use of very shallow depth of field-induced blurring and 'bokeh'.
<edit to add detail>
These were both shot after a rain storm passed through the sambadrome, hence the shine and high ambient light reflectivity. It helped for the same reason movie/TV scenes are often 'wet down' beforehand as it adds a significant amount of details and interest to an otherwise flat shot. In this case I really wanted to have the reflections pick up the crazy colours, shadows and activity going on around the performers. These performers were at the end of the sambadrome and were in the process of stripping off their costumes and going for the afterparty. They were shot on a Canon D20 with a Canon EF L 100-400mm (f/4.5-5.6) lens fully extended to 400mm. Autofocus settings were Pattern metering mode for the first photo because I wanted the surrounds only a little out of focus, but the ground completely out. The second shot was manually focussed to try and pinpoint the donkey's eye and rose hat (I missed slightly and got its horn, but pretty close!). The metadata says it was spot focussed, though??
400mm, f/5.6, 1/25th sec, 0 EV, ISO400, 0.3ND filter, manual mode, IS on
87138
400mm, f/5.6, 1/15th sec, 0 EV, ISO400, no filter, manual mode, IS off

And finally from the train graveyard at Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, where salt trains go to die (for some reason I thought I was in Chile when I labelled these Salar photos, I blame too much cerveca and MinuteMan pizza... :sombrero: ).

Composition is there, but I think they turned out a bit soft, especially the beer.
I think that has to do with my lighting, I only have one flash/softbox and two bounce cards. Also, the lens I was using isn't the best. I will see what I can do in Lightroom.

Put a big white piece of paper on a glass table and fire the flash from below with some bounce cards on each side of the glass and maybe on on the top to reflect some light back down into it??????

Yeah, sorry for not stating that. I was set at 16mm and it's on a full frame body, so that's a true 16mm and not cropped.
This is somewhat grainy on my monitor because of the ISO3200. I'm thinking of having it printed to see what the grain looks like when put on paper. I've found that a lot of the grain we see on the monitors is lost when printed

I'm not sure where the purple came from? Must be because this was only a few hours after sunset, so there must have still been some glow in the skies that the naked eye couldn't detect, but the long exposure picked up?

I thought it might have been from the reflections of the house lights. The 5DMKII and the 16-35 f/2.8 is a killer combo. That lens rarely comes off that body of ours.

Cool shot Pat. I enjoy trying to capture lightning storms and get plenty of chances around here during the summer monsoon season.
I like the stars you picked up with the ISO 3200 but that may be a factor in why the lightning strikes are blowing out some of your captures. You might have to balance less detail in the stars by using a much lower ISO. I usually am around ISO 200 for my lightning captures.
There are always trade offs though. I like the star details around the thunderhead in your shot. :victory:

I agree with Brad on the ISO. I think 1600 or lower and a longer exposure would have worked out better. Pretty awesome as it is though.

It was a cold night...I always choose to go out and camp on the coldest nights it seems. I had a hard time keeping the camera still long enough to take the pics! Funny thing is, it was only in the high 20's but I didn't come prepared for that at all. I was all on my own and started thinking about how I could take shots that kind of worked with that. I'm no expert, just someone having fun. I kept walking into the mesquite and creosote trying to find something interesting :D

I likes it too. :) Tricky exposure with the sun blazing through the branches, but it makes the composition.

Thanks guys! The 3 mountain shots are all from the Bugaboos, different years. It's my favorite place on earth. I ride there (snowboard) and I've even been so fortunate as to have climbed there. No sign of the hands of man for 360 degrees on most of the the peaks - for hundreds of miles. It's truly amazing. And the spires are white granite. Beckey and Chouinard put up many a route there. Almost every photograph on my website under *Photography in High Places* has been made there.
Thanks again - glad you enjoyed them :wavey:

Been awhile since I've posted anything. Work has me buried and we just relocated to Denver. Just starting to get out and explore a little. These were taken on the Greenbelt Plateau, just south of Boulder. I had headed out for a trail run but cut it short so I could make a few images.

It's got some character to it. I noticed I was sitting there staring at it for awhile, which is probably a good thing when it comes to an image
By the way, I should have mentioned, this was with a disposable camera. I thought it was striking, and wanted to create more pictures like it. Learned quickly that it’s a lot harder when luck isn’t on your side. That was a long time ago, and still one of my favorites.

Beautiful shots, all of them. In the one above, what did you use to paint the hill behind the tents? Is it the same source with which you illuminated the left-hand tent?

Thank you!
There were two Rigid LED flashlights and an LED lantern. The lantern was behind the left tent, one flashlight inside the right tent, and one flashlight to paint the hills.
I would actually like to recreate this at some point as I have much better ideas in mind, and much more efficient processes to achieve what I have in mind.
I also forgot my cable release on this trip so I was standing there with my finger on the shutter release for all of the shots I took that night.
