Since most of what I shoot is spure of the moment I have few planned out images. What I do have is mostly large format and have not had the funds to get those scanned. SomedayI will. Here is one 35mm image I took back in college studying photography. I general take a photojournalistic approach to my work. I will see what else I can find. I have been heavily influenced by Margaret Bourke-Wright and German Expresionist Films, so as with this image I like using high contrast with my images. When I get my Expresionism Series from Montauk point/Camp Hero scanned I will post a few.

I can't say an artistic eye made this shot- I was standing on top of my Jeep getting ready to shoot my buddy's, looked down at my camera and saw this in the LCD. I was merely the button pusher here!

A marathon weekend trip to Moab- in 2 days we drove back-n-forth and wheeled 5 trails. Of course we were on the trail from dawn to dusk so great sunset photo opportunities presented themselves!

I have weighed in a few marlin at the end of that pier. I remember when we pulled in and had our marlin flag flying on the outrigger the harbor master would fire off a cannon and soon the bars at Avalon would empty and everyone would come down to see the fish weighed in. Been many years since I brought one in there. We are talking the 1960's then. Crewed on a swordfish boat in mid 60's with Hap Jacobs( Jacobs Surfboards, Hermosa Beach) and we stuck a number of broad bills off Avalon and around Catalina. Came close twice to a bad ending. Great memories i

I shaped hundreds of boards in the PCH shop from 1964 to 1967. Hap is doing great and has been making boards at the old Greg Noll shop on Valley Drive in Hermosa. I will have to dig out ,scan and post an 8x10 photo I have of Hap and I weighing in a marlin on the Avalon Pier on the "self portrait" thread.

Its been a few years since I've scanned any film and it was scanned to go on a web site when dial up 56K was fast. The frames around them were made from html tables so don't translate here.

But here's a sampling:

on the outskirts of Bannack

Bannack is a ghost town located in the Eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains of Montana.

The first gold strike in the Montana territory was discovered near the site of Bannack in 1862. The town was founded and grew to support the gold miners. In it's heydays the population was approximately 3000 individuals.

Bannack's first sheriff was Henry Plummer, whose gang are said to have killed 102 people and robbed countless others before he and his gang of 24 people were caught and hung by town vigilantes.

Bannack grew to become Montana's first territorial capital.

But like many gold boom towns the population slowly left as the mines and stream were mined out and exciting gold strikes were made elsewhere. The miners left followed by the merchants who had no one left to sell to leaving the once thriving territorial capital a ghost town.

Sand tufa formation at Mono Lake.

Tufas are limestone structures that are the result of a chemical reaction between carbonate rich Mono lake water and calcium rich spring water. Since it needs both spring and lake water for the reaction to take place, tufa formation only takes place below the surface level of the lake.

Sand Tufas are a special kind of tufa that are formed below the surface of the sand where springs bubble up at the lake edge.

The sand surrounding the spring's path is saturated with lake water. The chemical reaction that takes place in the wet sand around the edge of the spring forms hard tubes of sand grains cemented by limestone.

These tubes form completely under the surface of the sand and are not visible.

Beginning in 1941, water that would normally flow into Mono Lake was diverted to supply water for the increasing needs of the Los Angles area. This caused the water level in Mono Lake to drop dramatically.

As the water level was dropping, the lake's wave action washed away loose sand from around the hard spring tubes or "sand tufas" exposing them.

As the lake level continued to drop formations of sand Tufas were left behind on what has become dry land.

September and directly below the photo of Ken and his wife you will see D40. Click on that and read his feelings about the D40. Hope this helps. I am about to order a D40 myself.

Absolutely. I had actually had the D40 before the D40x. My D40 was stolen, long story. Anyway, unless you want to crop your pics a lot or blow them up really big the D40 is every bit the camera the D40x is. With the money you save you can pick up a 55-200mm VR lens.

Try this (not that the b&w looks bad), do it in a sort of sepia or antique color. You will be amazed at how it turns out. Or post the original on here and I'll do it....

Just to show how the color changes can be so dramatic.

No, I don't mind at all! They look good to me. I do like the look of sepia prints on some shots and I think that works out well!

Since I'm a noob with Photoshop, where do you change the coloring to sepia? If you used CS2 that is.....

I don't have photoshop nor do I know anything abou it. Find something that says enhance colors or the like.
Personally I use a free program called Irfanview or HP Image zone. Both have those sort of things. The only things I do are crop (shape of photo like what i showed above) and color, contrast, saturation, etc.

The polarizer and evening light make the colors quite bold.

Great shot Brian. I just got a Singh-Ray LB polarizer. Shots like yours here, is making me anxious for spring to arrive so I can get out and use it.

Heh .. I like that thinking. :)

The bigger issue is that I spend more time photographing random stuff and my toys than the kids/family. Or that I snap plenty of the family but they never make it beyond review in Bridge/Lightroom. :-O

Case and point, this shot of some random surfer from our family vacation in San Diego/Coronado Island a few weeks ago. My kids and wife were all on the beach at the time, and I have a crapload of family photos from the trip, yet chose to process and post this one. Hehehehe.

Great little flower. I like the side lighting, and the texture it brings out of the pettles. I wish the flower were not in the center of the image. Left side would be better, as the light is coming from the right. Nice Macro view, and ground squirrel perspective. :luxhello:

Shot while in Pinetop, AZ over Memorial Day weekend; the only clear night.

This is a 5630 second (94 minute) exposure, shot at f/16, 12mm, ISO 100.

There's a lit cabin camera right which provided ambient light to the trees above (and added some light pollution in the lower right of frame). There was a constant breeze, protected at camera level but causing the trees to sway toward the tops ... hence the blur.

In hind sight, while I loved the perspective here, I wished I'd composed with more open sky to afford more stars and, therefore, more pronounced trails. As shot here, there's a relatively small window of sky, so only a few stars passed "through" it. I also would have moved further from the ambient light source as well, which I think diluted the number of stars visible (through the lens).

I was also shocked with the level of noise, even for an hour and a half exposure, given it was quite cool out (no chance of overheating the sensor) and set to ISO100.

Rob,
This is a very cool shot. From your text, is sounds like you wanted the star streaks to be the subject. As it turned out, the trees are the subject, and without your info, we would all be wondering how you got the trees lit, and had star trails.

As for the low noise issue: Many of the DSLR cameras use a "Dark Slide" to get rid of noise, in long exposures. It works like this - After the initial image is done, the camera turns the sensor back on (mirror down and shutter closed) for the same or similar amount of time, as the initial shot. There will be color noise recorded on this "Dark Slide". The camera then subtracts the data on the "Dark Slide", from the first image file. It works very well, but the camera is on for a long time, and it can kill a battery, before it is finished.

Very cool, either way.:wings:

I find that images which are composed using color line over form line are sometimes equally or more intriguing. While having that thought in my head I came across this single rose sitting up out in front of its leafy green backdrop. So of course I had to prove the thought to myself so I pulled out my camera and moving it in small circles using a 7 second exposure I effectively painted this shot. Any watercolor fans here?

Regarding noise, I actually turned off the camera's LE NR for these because I've found it offers marginal help in suppressing noise on images over 5 minutes yet adds 2x the time to shoot because of the in-camera processing. So I'd have had to wait nearly an hour for the camera to run between my first and second shots. When I did star trails over the Superstitions last summer I used LE NR function and it took forever ... without tangible benefit. YMMV. ;)

Oh, and on the battery life thing, I took the 1-hour and this subsequent 1.5 hour shots on the same charge and the batt meter showed 2/3s after. I shot the entire next day -- maybe another 50 shots, most with fill flash from the 580EX -- and the batt still had 1/2 life left. In fact, I've not changed out the battery used on this night shot two weeks ago and it's still good to go. Amazing.

Buzz buzz buzz. This little guy was starting to build a nest on my deck. Shot taken with my G9, I was shocked by how good the macro is on that little camera.
http://TrevorBrown.smugmug.com/photos/312517266_togfV-M.jpg

For this below shot I was experimenting a little with a new technique I picked up. It can be frustrating when the camera does not capture the light quite like you see it. So here I slowed the shutter, and about half way through the exposure I blew on the lens fogging it up a little. Of course you could do this in Photoshop or with a special effects filter but you'd loose sharpness going with one of those two routes. I fogged up the lens a little too much here, but it illustrates the effect you can get without the need for destructive editing.

We were in dark sky country over the long weekend. We had great weather, not a cloud in the sky, and the stars at night, oh my! I didn't want star trails, I wanted to capture it the way we saw it. In order to do so I had to do the unthinkable and set the camera at ISO 3200. I tried other lower ISO combos but even with a 30 second exposure you start to see trails so I had no other real options. There is noise here, and plenty of it, but I got the shot I was hoping for.

There's not many places left where you can see the milky way on a clear night...

Here are another couple from last weekend. I was doing some back country hiking and came across a clear stream with wild orchids scattered here and there. I actually sat in this spot for some time before I pulled out the camera. I only took about 10 pictures but the first image I took was, IMO, the best. It's the first one presented below.

We had a monsoon storm pass through last weekend and my daughter was mesmerized by how hard the rain was falling. The right pane is the branch of a Hibiscus tree on our patio that was being pounded by runoff from the roof.

Shot at ISO 1600 for that grainy look; 580EX bounced off ceiling.

It's intimidating and humbling to post pictures to this site and to this thread. There's some amazing talent represented here. Y'all have taken some stunning photos. Here's a few that I have taken that I like. Mostly just point and shoot, but I'm making an effort to point and shoot at things that I like. My camera is a run of the mill Canon Powershot A40.

This is looking toward Niagara Falls, Canada from the U.S. side. I liked the mist and I like the verticality of this picture.

http://www.zoto.com/todarinm/img/45/588025f601d6067648521d1eaedd678a.jpg

Next is a picture I took through the security fence at the World Trade Center. I think the fence almost makes the photo look like a puzzle, or a mosaic or something.

http://www1.zoto.com/todarinm/img/620x620x2/dd45bc695ed9f275b6d4938fa9481b1a.jpg

This is a picture across Lake Merritt in Oakland. I set the shutter speed to stay open for a few seconds and let it go. It's not great, but I kinda dig it.

and 2nd place in a college photo contest (nature and landscapes category)

Taken in some jungle in Costa Rica and I swear the scene looked just like that and I took like 10 pics of the same shot at different settings.

could anyone critique these and tell me why i might like these more than a normal full bodied shot, and also tell me what they lack (how could the shot be better)...

fyi-

-these were both framed such that the subject was to one side of the frame
-these were both picked out of several shots for good facial expressions.

i'm picking up bits and pieces of technique from you guys.

both were taken with an A300-DSLR

Look good. You may want to adjust the color a little bit. Make it a bit more saturated I guess.

Try cropping the first one where you can only see the heads of the kiddos. Might be an interesting shot. Less distraction... the focal point is obviously the expressions on their face, which are coolishly contrasting.

The second photo is similar, the expression is what you were going for... background uninteresting or says the kid is in a pack of moms. If the kid was sitting in the back of a boat or like on a school bus or something, the background could tell a story.

I always think its cool to get down to the child's level and slightly lower.... like these...

On holiday for two weeks in Breckenridge and did the Peak 10 trail today (takes you nearly to the summit of 13,000+ feet. We got to around 12,500' then stopped for a brief leg stretch (the bumpy climb took its toll on bladders and th 18 mos old strapped into her child seat). Unfortunately we had to head out because of thunderstorms moving through before we could complete the last section, which is slightly technical because of the switchbacks, loose rock and some snow on the trail.

The Pathy parked next to my Tacoma was a couple of chicks up to snowboard about a 2,000 sq ft patch of snow with a jib setup for off-season riding. Like us, they bolted when the lightning moved in (no pun intended).

Agreed, that is an incredible picture. If you had the rod/reel company's logo displayed on the equipment, you could probably sell it to them; that photo has a lot of pop to it.

And this one is equally sweet, in fact I may like it better. It has an awesome feel to it. mrbishi - do you have any details about this pic (exposure settings, lens, post processing, etc)? I would love to be able to take pics like that.

Thanks for your kind words everyone. I shoot with a Nikon D40 with a combination of Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 24-60 f2.8 and Nikon 55-200 VR lenses. I shoot in manual all the time and all my processing is done in Adobe Lightroom.

The picture of the fly reel is a favourite and brings back some fond memories. I remember setting it up and having as much fun taking the picture as I was fishing in that amazingly beautiful location.

The windmill shot was taken at Ninghan Station in Western Australia - the day was slightly overcast. I post processed it with quite a lot of contrast and sepia tones to get it the way it was.

I'd love to submit some images to stock photography websites but have no idea where to start - any tips/advice?

Heavy subject, we should probably start a new thread if people take notice and want to talk more about it, but having just started this whole process myself let me offer this up here and now.

First step is finding one you like. Some of the better ones are, Corbis, Getty, Alamy, Jupiter Images, Aurora Photos, Masterfile, Digital Railroad and Marketplace.

Be prepared to go through your images and only select the 'cream of the crop'. Also make sure the file size is about 50 meg's or larger, as the requirement to go to print is indeed a marketplace for these firms. Make sure all of the spotting and adjustments have been made, take them up to 100% and see if there are spotting problems or noise issues. Dont over sharpen anything - as they will ususally do the final tweeks.

You'll probabaly need about 50 or more images to submit depending on the stock agency. They will review your 'style' and the content of what you shoot. Some will also require an annual submission number, so they continue to get good stuff from you.

You could also use a microstock agency, there are tons of these. Most working pros though are critical of these and see them as "killing the buisness." The difference is that micro agencies typically specialize in royalty-free, low cost photos and traditional agencies specialize in high cost, rights-managed photos. If you want to make some money the micro agencies are almost a waste of time. For instance they might charge as low as $1 for an image with somewhere between 20 and 50% going to the photographer. So to make $100 in commissions with micro agencies, you`ll have to sell a lot of images. Almost a waste of time considering the amount of time and effort that has to go into preparing and tagging photos for these agencies.

If you`re really serious about selling some images pick up Richard Weisgrau and Victor Perlman's book "Photography Licensing (http://www.amazon.com/Licensing-Photography-Richard-Weisgrau/dp/1581154364/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222350072&sr=1-3)". It`ll give you a ton of info about the business of photography and licensing.

Most importantly shoot the good stuff, submit often, and be patient.....as things typically won't happen until you've got a lot of material out there.

Perhaps PM some of the pro's here as well. Sinuhe, (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/member.php?find=lastposter&t=19993) and Michael Slade (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/member.php?u=147) are but a couple of the talented pros here that may have more insight.

FYI Digital Railroad closed... lots of stock places are dieing... plus you need thousands of images to start at most of teh good ones, or else you are lost... at least that was what I was told a couple of years ago when I started looking at them

mrbishi - you mentioned in a previous post that you use Lightroom for post processing. How did you learn to use the software? Did you have previous photo processing experience, or did you start with Lightroom? I ask because I've been working a lot on my photo-taking skills, but I'm just starting to get into post-processing aspect of the photography process. I'm starting from scratch as far as knowledge goes, and the pics you've posted are pretty impressive. Do you have any recommendations for books, websites, etc? Or did you just learn as you went? I'd appreciate any help you (or anyone else) can give me.

Lost Canadian: ah huh tricked! let me try to guess but I don't really know. Number 1 looks like water droplets on some sort of non stick surface - maybe a pan? Number 2 is a dense thicket of trees. Number 3 the surface of some freshly cut chipboard maybe? I'm struggling

soonenough: Thankyou :D Chris Orwig is awesome - I thoroughly reccomend purchasing this: http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=539. Search around for his name and you'll find A LOT of really good articles with useful stuff. Other than that there are a lot of good resources online and most importantly experiment and play - it's a good way to learn what works and what doesn't.

LOL, isn't funny how we all see things differently.?.:D

I'll be nice, 1) is Christmas lights on my house viewed through the water droplets of melted snow on my windshield, 2) is trees with the keys catching the light, and 3) is an ice pattern on a pond. The setting sun revealed the interesting shapes.

Here's a couple more from today.

We were in the Alabama Hills (near Lone Pine, CA), working with the sunrise. It is a huge place; so many images to create; so little time. I turned 90 degrees to the sun, and started looking for repeating shapes, and contrast. The black framing is easy to do from within Photobucket (edit/decorate/boarders)
Criteria: Thought out, composed, artistic. At least I hope it is artistic.:)

MrBishi, I really like the Australian coast photos. Great use of the wide angle lens, and a great story in the "Fly Rod" photgraph.

Trevor, your abstracts are very interesting; but they are also well composed, using pleasing lines, space and selective focus. Well done.

A couple from our trip last weekend to a nice little spot we know of.

It's really hard to get a correct exposure with the amount of dynamic light changing from the shadows to the sky!

Not planned or well thought out but I think it is an interesting picture of a friend's JK. I was just on one side of a pond and they passed by and I noticed the reflection.

The second is my 5 year old's photo of a Willy's Mud Racer. He has his own camera and takes pictures of what he likes. I like this photo. It isn't perfect, but the colors just jump out at me.

I took this one few years back in friend's garage after he died. The mustang belonged to one of his clients who had not yet picked it up. The garage has long since been demolished the image for me is a sad goodby to so many happy childhood memories.

Here's a cool one I took this summer while doing the 'UP adventure weekend' (in completed adv. section).
Didnt really realize the image until I got home, nor did I ever hear that this is a 'known' image. Any Yoopers want to comment?

As mentioned in another post (random rig) ... I've been away from ExPo for too long, with no time for surfing (site), wheeling or photography :(

Did step out last night after a good day of rain here in the Valley to snap a shot of the neighbor's Christmas lights reflecting off the wet pavement.
