Amazingly clean work... but $135k, good luck with that :D
The 3.4l is a killer motor, I've been a longtime advocate of it... in Tacomas ;) While it would scoot the FJ/Bandy around nicely, I'd personally prefer a torque inline 6 or a high output SB, such as the Toyota 4.7

Some of the trucks in TLC's shop are near that price range. Their shop is down the street from our house and when driving past the wife saw a nice restored metallic green FJ so we stopped to check it out. It was really nice but it was $95k. Needless to say, I don't own a nice metallic green FJ!

Yup, many of their Icon builds are in the low $100k's, not surprising really. The do some amazing builds, but they also market their rigs to a totally different crowd than the average Land Cruiser affecionado IMO (ie. basketball players and rap artists ;)). The day I see an Icon getting used I will change my mind... they are just too much money to use, they offer little advantage over a custom built $25k Land Cruiser IMO. Would I love to own one, absolutely! ;)

You know, I don't disagree about TLC's target market. But I will say this much, you do see guys using Hummer H1's out in Moab and those aren't cheap. So while I'd reasonably expect I'll never see a TLC ICON out there, I also won't say never...

Your absolutely right... but there are some advantages you get with a Hummer that you don't get out of any other build... whereas with the Icon I just don't see $100k worth of increased performance versus a reasonable built FJ40. Neat rigs... but I won't be holding my breath for one to show up in Moab ;)

You'd at least have to upgrade the rims for me to pay that price tag... a bajillion dollars dropped into the rig... and $40 on the wheels.

Nice rig, out of my price range!
*snip*
aaaahhhhhhahahaha... ok lets put this into perspective with their other auctions:
For the $135 they're asing for that, I could buy...
..the H1 for wheeling:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130172496783
..the '61 Vette for sunday top-down crusing
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130172488548
..the Mustang GT to commute to work:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130173465099
and I'd STILL have enough let to cover a years worth of gas and insurance, and approximately fifteen thousand pine rear view mirror air fresheners.

I am just seeing why it is $135K, Kinda plain jane, don't you think?
It just has a interior from a Tacoma or a 4Runner, big deal, anyone could of gone to a salvage yard it got that.
Not impressed at all.

In a place like LA, where hundreds of millions of $$ change hands every day, it's not hard to imagine someone dropping $100k+ on a toy. Certainly it's unique.
What does a Ferrari or a Maserati go for?
What I find interesting is that they seem to have cannibalized an '01-'04 Tacoma, right down to the seats and the tires. Now, I like the 3.4l motor and the 5 speed in my Tacoma just fine, but I would think for 135 grand you'd want something a little less common - either a diesel or a big honkin' V-8. I'm also a little surprised that someone would drop north of 100 grand on an SUV and still want to shift his own gears.

It is a great motor and it fits in the engine bay VERY nicely.
i dont have an issue with any of it, per say. id love to own it as is. 135 k is just stupid money for truck with 0 collectability. im sure one could put 135k into restoring a 75 ford maverick, but.... who'd pay for it?

That is a nice truck. I have to agree on the pricing, though. I would trade him straight up for a 03 DCab Tacoma and a 99 TJ in a heartbeat though. A little more room than a TJ, with Toyota reliablity, add a chaser trailer, and that would be the vehicle I hang on to until the grave.
Hmm, so can a normal guy import an older LWB LC like that?
At 135K I would expect a lot more bling............its not very marketable to the crowds in cali that would have that kind of money to drop on a toy.

I just finished a quote for a custom FJ45 today. Not an expedition style rig, not a daily driver but could be, $120 000 and we don't start with any old parts. The parts are fairly priced and so is the labor, there is just a ton of it! I'll be starting in a couple of weeks.
There are all kinds of people with all kinds of ideas, dreams, and desires. I think the pictured Cruiser is a little pricey but very cool and the rig I'm about to build I wouldn't build for myself....but it is what my customer wants. So thanks to all those that can afford these one off creations, I think they are inspirational from a mechanical standpoint.

The current issue of Toyota Trails magazine (magazine of the TLCA) has a BJ46 very similar to that for sale for $18,500. It's RHD and located in Japan but will be in the US in January.

i wouldnt say thats cheap for a 25yo truck thats a frame with sheet metal, but thats about what id expect to pay. 3g to convert it to lhd, and youre set. its even a diesel. bonus.

Yeah - it's a badass ride to-be-sure, but that's like me trying to sell my truck for $35,000. Just because that's how much I have in it, doesn't mean that's what it's worth.

that shows you the brain mentality of the people that spend that much for so little...my tires and rims cost more than his and my rig is four times cheaper and four times more functional.go figure

Why bother to convert it? Nothing wrong with RHD. Might be a little hard to pass on a 2 lane road, but come on, it's a diesel LC - who are you going to be passing? :xxrotflma
