The very last year for a 5-speed 4Runner was 2000. I wouldn't say they are rare in the 1996-2000 years, but I also would not call it common. What is rare would be a 5-speed with the TRD package, in other words with a factory locker. Hard to tell, but there is a button to the lower left of the steering wheel. Might just be the clutch defeat button, not the locker button, though.

Nope, that is a RR DIF LOCK! The clutch interlock button is the one under the vent on the left side. I don't know 4Runners that well, but I was under the impression that all of the 4Runners between 1997 and 2000 had the Dif Lock?

Naw...it looks like a red LED light for an alarm. Or just a LED light.

I can't tell for sure, but, my one of my Toyota's had a alarm light in one of the switch blanks. Installers like to put them in the blanks, so they don't have to drill any holes in the dash.

That's what I thought. The switch to the left under the vent is exactly where the clutch defeat is on my '91, at least.

For what its worth, it is not that hard to retrofit the locker into the rear of those.... I believe it should have the wiring in place too...!
