Freeze,

Thanks for the great pics, they brought back so many memories. We just got back 2 weeks ago from Whipsaw, what a great run. It was our first time and we will definately be going again.
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/ericbirk/Whipsaw%202010/DSC01273.jpg

The only negative was not knowing exactly how to get around to the cabin @ Wells Lake. I followed a bit of BAD advice and decided to try and go through the mud hole. Turns out it is a bit deeper than it originally looked. The water was about a foot from the bottom of the DS window on my Taco. By the time we got her out there was 5+ inches in the cab. Unfortunately no pictures as everyone was scrambling to get me out.
2 days of work yanking out the interior and hosing it off to get the swamp smell out. Everything works fine and now my entire carpet is clean! definately worth the trip!!

spent the last 6 days on the lost coast with the family. one of our stops included Usal Beach in the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park where i think the state just added their name so they could charge you for nothing. the area is awesome but the state gov has nothing to do with that lol
Anyways 3 generations of toyota on the beach at one time with no links to each other, says toyota is #1 in my book.

I would love to hear about the Alvord when you get back! I have had it on my list for a few years, keep getting sucked the the cool coast and sand tho LOL.

Thanks 4Rescue its been a long road to get it were its at now but all worth it. Really glad I stuck with the goal of 33's and low solid axle swap. Having the 2dr is great and a curse at the same time. I love driving it around and in the US I get lots of strange looks from Toyota people and then lots of thumbs up's. "Wheelingnoob" I love the stance of your 4runner. Could you give a little more info about the OME front spring and if you used a kit. How is the ride and how about a few more shots including one of the rear bumper? I have a 1988 4runner V5 5spd IFS as my daily driver and bunch of parts at home including a 1998 3.4, 1985 front axle, some extra rear leafs for a RUF swap, etc. I hope to put it all together this winter but maybe I should look at the OME leafs? Nice rig!

Nice rig!

Thanks,

It started with a TG 3" IFS eliminator kit. Once it was done I was not happy with it at all. Way to high and soft, felt very unstable. I then started looking at alternatives, I looked at everything from selling it and getting a 2010 taco to just putting on 35" tires and not daily driving it any longer.

I talked to the limited number of people out there that have done low SAS on the 2nd gen and started getting all my data together. After lots of research I settled on the OME parts as they are the best in the business for quality and construction.

I ended up getting the OME Heavy load leafs from a 84-85 4runner (CS009FA x 2) for the front. As well as there Extra duty leaf (D17XL x2) to cope with the added weight of the V6 and the winch and bumper. I also got the OME shackles (GS4 x 1). After installing all the part I have to say there quality is so much better than the trial gear stuff I took off. I also installed 10" travel shocks to compensate for the lower ride height. The rest of the SAS stuff is the TG swap kit and whats left of it. A word of warning I would not use any of the TG bearings when rebuilding your front axle and would only use 555 brand FJ-80 TRE's.

I'm still not totally sure I need the extra leaf in the front and may pull those out and see how it handles that. As it sits right now its nice and firm and I have had no problems with stability.

Hope this has helped you out. I do not have any pictures of the rear bumper yet as I got it done the night before I left on my Oregon trip and still need to finish it.

Guess I should join in! Been lurking a while, finally joined up. Haven't done too much, as the Tacoma is my DD. Silver, 2009 Double cab, Short bed sport. You can see the mods in my signature; pending a Total Chaos UCA installation. Future plans are hopefully a bestop camper shell, sliders, and likely a Best Built skid plate in the next week or two.

Haven't done much yet, as you can tell the tires are getting a bit inadequate.

ohh the memories of that damn hole. I remember it every single time I walk up the DS of my truck, good ol spruce tree pin stripping...

Thanks man, it needs a few things (like bigger rubber) but all in all it handled more than I thought it would on that trip.

I couldnt believe how well controlled that trail was. Tons of signs, a few idiots in the past wrecked it (cable marks on trees going up falcon hill, garbage at the 2 lakes) but other than that it was amazing.

I was taking a look at www.ct4wda.com a few days ago. I have taken a look at a few 4wd club sites and I have to say you guys definately look and sound like the most professional group I have ever seen. Great writing, great driving, great vids! Are most of the runs in Alberta/BC?

That sounds like a great idea, I really do not know a lot about the area or areas to go other than I love the coast and really am interested in Alvord (SP) area. I would love to do the North/South Oregon trail some day too or even do it all the way to the border with Canada. I need more vacation time than I have right now tho to do a trip like that.

Do you get any rubbing issues with those tires? UCA fender etc?

I do have some rubbing on the frame at full lock. A little in the back when it was loaded right down and would take a big bump but I was surprised what little I had on our trip for as much offroad as we were.

None known on the UCAs. I know my shocks are all about worn out and was hoping to get some 5100 Bilstiens before the trip but everyone is out until Oct. I am hoping that those will take care of what litle rubbing I have.

I must also say, I think I am among the ranks now in support of Treadwrights. These tires performed excellent in everything I threw at them.

The Mombasa RTT (same as a Camping Lab basically) was excellent too. We had some pretty bad weather thrown at us on one of the nights and we were camped damn-near in Lake Superior and we didn't get a drop of water in the tent. A shout out for Jacque at TRDParts4U (where I purchased the RTT) too for his help. I would have gone with a CL but Fernando wasn't going to have any in in time to prep for our trip.

A pic of the truck semi-clean now.

Lotta nice rigs in here.
Reminds me, I still need to pick up a Trasheroo.

These are from last week on my vacation to Mt. Rainier National Park.
The new BajaRack model MG worked out great too for the tent.

I am ready to get out again next month or in early October.

Yeah the Devil horns are from some guy on Tacomaworld.
Some of the photos are from our UP overland trip, pic#2 Gay Beach & pic #3 near the charcoal Kilns on the last day. Pictures #1,#4, are from Ardbeg Ont. Good offroading but a little extreme for me,(I like more expedition overlanding stuff like the UP overland trip.) Its lots of rock crawling stuff better for built rigs, but I did it with only a few scars.
Here is a little video of some of that weekend, if you can put up with the porn music.

Yep, should have posted a little about it to begin with...

We took this in on a trade in, the previous owner has been a customer of mine for the last 4 years. He did most of the modifications and barely used this thing.

2006 with 49,788 miles when I bought it, which was about a month ago.

Donahoe coilovers in the front
OME springs and shocks in the rear
sliders
ARB front bumper
CBI rear bumper and tire carrier
Toyo 255/85/16 tires

So far the only things That I have done to it are mount:

co2
axe/shovel
tool box
Blue Sea fuse block
12v power outlets in the bed
Softtopper
fuel and water cans
fire extinguisher
bottle opener

Future plans:

winch
gears & lockers
skid plates
Snorkel
rack over the soft top
Lights (on work bench)
CB/ antenna (on work bench)
Awning (in garage)

Almost done with the fender flares, just need to get real Line-X done to them. So I chopped the fenders about 3 inches . They are painted flat black for now. Also chopped the cab mount and cut the rear bumper back almost 5 inches to line up with the new fenders. I think she is almost ready for some 35's

Sorry for the massive pic, it's not letting me resize it..

Anyways, 1992 4Runner that I bought end of May 2010. Bone stock without even a CD player. Came with 138xxxkm's and the original tires.

Now it has 153xxx km's and I replaced two of the tires as one of them developed a massive bulge. Already have a bunch of parts stacked up for it.

Next important "mod" i'm wanting to do is put a locker in it, probably an Aussie because it is cheap and then a emu lift and some 33's. Don't want to go much bigger than that as I'm a broke Flight school student and DD the truck 100+km's a day... But I do love exploring with it, even just as it is it's surprisingly capable.

Love the site, i've already sacrificed lots of homework time by reading.

Some of the best rides I have ever done are shuttling up where the truck couldnt even make it to the top, then surfing down on the DH rig.

night patrol?
did you fix that blown bead or put the spare on?

Haha I just said night patrol cause my blue and amber dust lights look like police lights :)

Yeah we fixed the Bead in about 15 minutes, it took some time to get thar wheel elevated in the sand using a hilift though... Boy do I hate hilifts!

Actually it was quite simple, we got the tire elevated and then hooked up my compressor til the tire popped back on

That was how I did it before the T-Top RTT. I hauled the canvas in the truck and cut poles where I wanted to camp. I usually would only do this if I planned on being in one place for a week or so. The RTT has made it so much better!!

Here are a pair of shots, one from the top of Saddleback yesterday, and tonight watching the sunset from Red Beach. Notice the roof rack change. Just left BajaRack with one of their new low-profile Utility racks. Was able to climb up and sit on top to enjoy the sunset. The flat design is going to be a great platform for a number of things including a roof top tent.

Been lurking on this site for several months now, and just finally picked up my 2010 Trail Edition about 10 days ago. Loving it so far!

Planning on keeping the truck pretty stock; I have 265/70/17 Goodyear Duratracs on order, and will likely install sliders in the next few months. Other than that, I need to get some basic recovery and camping gear.

I am pretty new to off-road driving and expedition travel, so if anyone in the Mid-Atlantic is up for some weekend trips, please reach out!

When I reached the last switchback in the Tacoma, I got out and was up to my waist! It was deceiving because the Tacoma floats above the first 1' to 1.5' of snow. :26_7_2:

Snow is super fun!

There were a few camera's involved:

Panasonic GH1 HD
Sanyo Xacti 720p Waterproof (they make a 1080 now)
GoPro HD

Anything that Marty was shooting with and the in car was the Xacti. Anything that was non fish eye was the Panasonic and the fish eye was the GoPro.

It was edited in 780p but now I'm noticing that 1080p will be the next format for the video's. Perhaps an upgrade in the Xacti in the future :D

The GH1 is very nice... still learning lots about it!

First pics of stock 2002 sport 4runner. 120k. Will be a slow build but I'm sure the wait will be worth it.

Plans:
CBI Bumpers and sliders.
Corbeu seats
4.88 gears, arb lockers
Icon suspension/arb rear springs
dual batteries
fridge
skids
255/85-16 cooper st's
brake upgrade
mean green starter, alternater.
etc...

needs now:
tires
suspension
blower motor resistor
power steering pump
belts, hoses
fluid change
etc...

I should have gotten an inspection BEFORE (blower motor, power steering) I bought it but... Hindsight 20/20

It was cheap and it WILL be an excellent rig someday...

For some reason I cannot attach pics right now, stay tuned...

I love putting the Toyota in 4LO and going up into the snow and seeing all the "built" red-neck trucks on their super wide tires and 14" of lift having troubles where the good old Yota just walks through anything in it's path on it's "wimpy" 33x10.50's (the Red-neck's words not mine eh ;) )... I think Petersens once called old Toyota Mini-trucks "the Go-Anywhere Tractors of the trail" and I can't argue...

I WILL post pics of the snow outing tomorow. I'm giddy just waiting to go... I can't sleep so I'm up cruising the Portal for inspiration and I just pound it eh.

Cheers

AHHH so very simmilar terrain... God how I love the NW/Western Canada... Well, we ended up NOT going up the mountain cause we had a Tornado touch down that day and then just trying to get up Hwy 26 was a complete circus. As the old Police offivcer doing the road-side checkpoint (for chains etc) put it... he looked my truck over and said" Well, I'm sure you'll get through anything and your truck certainly looks safe, but if I were you I'd be more worried about all the other idiots up there right now..." couldn't have put it better myself so we turned around and came home and got trees from a little farm down the road. Last year when we were up there there were SO many 'red-necks" in their huge lifted trucks with giant tires and NO ability to drive in the snow it was pretty scarry. Seeing an F350 on 37's with 12" of lift sliding at you is what I call major pucker factor eh ;)

SO I missed another chance to go wheel the truck. it's ok, I made up for it by coming home and trying to slice my finger off doing some wood-carving HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Wait, that doesn't make up for it... I think I lost a little blood there ;)

Nice truck mate, you've made me jealous since I didn't get to go up to the hill and get a tree let alone play with the truck. Man does she (I call her the "Super Turtle" ) LOVE the snow, but hey, she's a Toyota, that's what they were made for eh. To lay in the woods, the farm and litteraly anything other lesser vehicles can't do.

Cheers

When I reached the last switchback in the Tacoma, I got out and was up to my waist! It was deceiving because the Tacoma floats above the first 1' to 1.5' of snow. :26_7_2:

Hey Freeze, how are the uni-balls holding up in the harsh winters up there?

I live in Wisconsin and they use a lot of salt/beet juice and sand and was wondering if the uni-balls would hold up vs. ball joints that are well protected?

I could design a boot for the uni-balls but just wondering. I have a 2010 Tacoma AC with mods listed below...

Hey that's a great question..

They really don't like the weather here. I usually change them every spring. I also think it's from the wet salty roads, over night it'll freeze inside the cup, then first crank of the steering wheel it messes up the teflon inside. The steering heims last for two years. The suspension balls last for about 1.2 years.

Working on a solution would be most excellent! There's a dust shield that you can get for them but they're really not that great for moisture. Some sort of gore-tex bootie would be great. Just trying to figure out how to get it to seal up and not get ripped up from all the travel.

Went out and tested more of the goodies the new 4Runners have to offer. Crawl control, diff lock and 4lo helped to get me out of a deep mud hole today. I also gave the wife a period of instruction on the 4Runner's gadgets and she drove the truck around with ease. Even made it up some parts that a modified Jeep had some serious trouble with.

Front tire was just a hair off the ground here. Rear tires still had contact.

Nicely Done! Really like the Bronze color. Could you post the info on the size of those AR Mojave's (Backspace width) that your using. Those are the same wheels I've been contemplating and wondered if you had a reason for 17" vs 16". They look great, how is the power with that size tire?

Thank you. The wheels are 17x8, 4.5" backspace, 0 offset. I had read about a couple folks whose 16" Mojaves were rubbing the brake caliper. I didnt want to mess with grinding the caliper, so I opted for 17".

I lost about one mpg coming from 265/70R17s. No doubt due to the larger diameter. The power is still there, I just have to press down harder to get it...I will re-gear one day, and throw a locker in the rear while I'm at it.

Good eye. It is in fact a schedule 40 PVC rack. When you're a poor college kid on a budget, you make use with what you can. It works well for my needs which are simply hauling a few bags and a tent and occasionally a cooler or two. I do plan on upgrading to either aluminum or something else more sturdy in the near future but first I have to finish up this semester and then I'll hit it hard this summer with some more upgrades.

Something looks off with your far right light..?

Yea I rubbed up against some thick brush and it got bent. Knocked off the cover. Back tracked and found the cover on the ground. I had actually ran it over but some bending of the plastic and it fit right back on.

I like it. It looks clean. I always liked the Toyota Super White on their trucks though.

It's a V-series, which is the "econo" line.

^^^ THat old abay's a BEAUT!!!!!!! @103K it's hardly even broken in eh!!!! Too bad about the bed rust, but a Flat-bed will be AWESOME. You should build an "Aussie-Esque" Ute-style bed with removable bed-sides and tail-gate. THat would be awesome.

Nice truck mate.

Cheers

Dave

EDIT: Oh and lose those Rocker killers/NERF-bars before they wreck your cab, that's too nice a truck to do that too eh.

Awesome rigs here to say the least! Unique down to every nut and bolt, and each with their own great story, I love it. This is my first post and wanted to add to the Tundra fans here. I just discovered this site and now I'm hooked! A few trucks here I recognize from TS and TORRA, and alot of new ones. Well here she is, ready for some expo mods!:victory:
