My recovery kit started as a Hi-Lift Off-Road Kit (http://www.truckcustomizers.com/products/R4HLF450.6.html) plus 1 recovery strap. I've added to it over time as I've seen fit, and it's grown into what I just listed. I would like at least 1 more Snatch Block, and a couple of wheel chocks to call my kit complete. BUT - as is, I'm pretty sure that I could get myself and/or someone else out of just about anything.

Add 3 half moving blankets, 1 to pad my backside on rocks 1 -2 to prvide friction pad on/over corners and as damper on steel cables. Cylum sticks!!!!! the freakin batteries never go bad, waiting to be used.

I've gathered a few pieces together, though I luckily haven't had much need for any of it. Most of my recovery efforts have involved pulling people out of ditches and snowbanks in the winter, and I've primarily used my recovery gear to fell trees or skid logs.

The only things I'd like to add to the mix would be an amber strobe, a towing/tiedown cluster (t-hook, j-hook, etc.), and maybe a winch extension though I have never had the need. I should probably add some snacks and water, since it is always easier to think through a good solution to a problem when you're neither hungry nor thirsty.

I got Bill Burke's Getting UNstuck DVD for Christmas. I watched it last night, and it's a GREAT DVD! I already knew and practice a lot of the stuff he talked about. I wish every 4-wheeler / Off-Roader had this DVD and practiced such safe, and responsible recovery techniques.

There is a chapter on the DVD where - before he actually starts demonstrating winching techniques, he goes to the Superwinch factory and explains how a winch works, and then there's a big part about safely operating the winch, and communications. My sister thought that part was dumb and boring but I explained to her how dangerous a winch and recovery situation can be, and how stupid and unsafe some people are. Some people know little to nothing about recovery, but think a winch looks cool and makes them invincible. They just bolt the winch to their rig, and down the trail they go... :rolleyes:

It made me feel good about myself that I have NEVER seen this DVD before, yet I have EVERY SINGLE piece of recovery gear that Bill Burke recommends and carries. The only thing that he has in his kit, that I don't - is a Pull-Pal Earth Anchor. ...and at $500 a pop, I guess I'm just going to have to use my poor-man's Pull-Pal, and bury my spare tire!

I highly recommend this DVD. Both newbies and veterans can learn some good lessons.

I have all the same type of gear as well ,here is a thought ....
I went to harbor freight and picked up a welding blanket they are like $10.00 there, It can be used as a welding blanket of course also a lay on the ground to fix your rig , and you can drape it over a winch line for saftey while winching,cover gear at your campsite.

Pull-Pal Earth Anchor.
We came across a french guy stuck in sand last weekend. We offered him help but he insisted that he was fine. So we continued on our way. Much later I saw in the distance that he was still stuck so we drove back to him. He was trying to winch himself out using an anchor and getting nowhere.

I could not agree more. I've watched this DVD 3 times with friends. I have to agree that people should watch this DVD before going out on the trail. When I first watched it, I had revised my recovery gear kit. After watching it a second time, I decided to add a few key pieces of recovery gear and get rid of some old stuff. Great video.
