It's kind of a look that only a mother could love but it seems like a well equipped set-up. Low miles on that diesel too.

I'd love to take 'er for a spin to Costa Rica and back. :smiley_drive:

In the US we haven't seen half of what toyota sells. That thing is ugly but it is functional. I'd wheel it. :costumed-smiley-007

Look up "Toyota DYNA". Several of these just showed up in GA at a Gov auction from Warner Robbins. So did a bunch of vans we never got in the US.

Think of it this way...if it was a bug it would live forever, nothing that ugly ever gets eaten in the animal world! I still think it is cute in its own little way.

Hey, that's not ugly!
It's just a little...different!
Pretty amazing for 1990 actually.

Aw, I don't think it's ugly. Just unique. I tell you what's ugly, though, is parts of that interior. How about that yellow sink? Yikes.

Eye of the beholder....

I think it is a beaut'!

The rest of the world gets the coolest vehicles.

Don't knock the yellow sink, Dave...(:))...we had one in our kitchen growing up. I would think of my childhood every time I did dishes in the little bugger.

Ours was green when I was kid. ;-) I can dig the mental connection. The yellow reminds me of the kitchen in our first house (it was very small, cheap and available when the Denver market was nuts back in 1997). Yellow sink, matching yellow (actually sort of a sunburst) appliances, deep, dark brown cabinets, dropped ceiling with 8' florescent lights. It was horrible, like a cave that made your skin look green. So now and forever yellow sinks are a mental trigger.

I am being bit of a smart ***....man, that yellow sink was Ugly. We had that 70's country theme going on in the house I grew up in...:D

The kitchen was yellow, orange and brown. The ironic thing, my current house had the same counter top. Now it is black granite.

Sorry bad photo of the "before"...part demo...

I think it's kind of cool. I remember those 1st gen Toyota vans. They were available in both 4x2 and 4x4 versions. IIRC the 4x4 versions had the same running gear as the 1st gen 4x4 Hilux truck. I still see them around Colorado every now and then. I think Toyota's next minivan was that weird looking Previa.

We got the Hiace from 1984 to 1989 and the 4WD version from 1986 thru 1989. My understanding is that you are right that the 4wd gear was pretty much identical (i.e. transfer case, hubs, front diff, etc.) to an IFS 4WD pickup from the period. What I don't know is whether or not the suspension was exactly the same (i.e. torsion bars and suspension arms). My guess is that springs and shocks are not indentical to the Hilux unless the Hiace shared a chassis with the Hilux, which it might very have.

From what I understand from other JDM importers is that this is a fine prarie schooner but the little 4 cylinder engine just does not have the grunt to push this beast up the hills.

Exactly... If you don't mind the slow highway speeds, this is actually an amazing vehicle.

Honestly, I am really surpirsed at the response to this. This is basically a mini-Fuso! Awesome little vehicle!

Even better, it's a Toyota! :D

As for slow speeds - compared to what? Ever driven a VW bus? It can't be any slower than that!

really. whats with the negative?

if it has hilux running gear, get a lift kit. theres a hell of allot more custom body work in this thing that the jeep, and i bet if you pro rate out the cost to purchase, it was allot cheaper new to boot. it being a cab over, you get more useful space out of the foot print. kinda like a pinz, but with parts availability, and you dont need to be an austrian engineer to work on it.

aint any uglier than a vannagon, and its a toyota.

take that. haters. :)

That isn't a life-sized Furby in the bottom-left hand corner, is it?
