Posting here as I know nothing about cameras....

I have a Canon Powershot Pro 1 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonpro1/) and recently the built in flash died so I'm looking to buy an external flash. My owners manual says its compatible with Hot-shoe (E-TTL with EX series Speedlites, wireless multi-flash support), but I have no idea what that means. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive flash, say under $60?

I don't know of any decent flash that will be under $60. The Canon flash heads that will work well on that camera will all be $120 or more. They are easy to use and give you more creative options.

Canon 220EX is the lowest you would want to go.($130)
The 430EX is much better ($240)
The 550EX is what I use (currently unavailable)
The 580EX replaced the 550EX ($350)

There are probably some 3rd party flashes that will "fire" when you trip the shutter; but they will be much more difficult to get proper exposures. The camera and flash have to be used in Manual Mode.

I use a 430EX and I am very happy with it on my 300D Rebel. :)
