An annoyance was packing and unpacking the RTT gear - sleeping bags and ThermoRests - to get to other heaver kit packed underneath. The routine developed to, upon arriving, open up the RTT, load it with this stuff, freeing access to the rest of the gear.

To address this (aside from building a sliding drawer system), I thought to repurpose the grab handle mounts in the third row seating area and turn them into racks to which bungee cords could be attached.

<a href="http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=101091&d=1337202199" title="Name: Stuffrackdetail.jpg
The racks are bars salvaged from a broken bag chair. I drilled holes in the bars through which they mounted to the factory attachments for the grab handles using longer hardware.

It's not pretty, but using a few or as many bungees as needed keeps the rack adjustable. I thought about stringing shock cord through drilled holes in the racks, but I like the flexibility of this set-up.

In the process of loading the rack I managed to dislocate my left elbow in a freak lateral move of packing in a sleeping bag. Other than that, it's faired an off-road test well, clutching its contents to the ceiling out of the way of packing in the rest of the gear.

I have used the old version of the ARB fridge several time and it has always worked great. I order a new ARB fridge. I got it home, plugged it in and put in a few cans of soda in it for a test. I set the temperature to 37F and left it overnight. The next morning the soda did not feel that cold. I put a couple thermometers in the fridge for a couple hours. They both read in the mid 40’s. I had to set the temperature to 23F to get the thermometers to read in the mid 30’s. There was also some ice forming in one of the cooling lines inside the fridge. I contacted ARB and the store I got it form. They got me a new fridge very quickly. I put in 9 sodas and the 2 thermometers, set the temperature to 37F then left it overnight. This morning both thermometers read 50F. There is also a noise when the compressor is not running. It is kind of like a motor with bad bearings. That has me more worried than the lack of cooling. I have set the temperature to 23F and will give it overnight again.

So, I guess my question is has anyone else actually put a thermometer in their fridge? If the fridge that I have keeps making this noise, should I take it back and get the first fridge I had which did not make any noise when the compressor was not running?

Thanks for the help.

Hello everybody,
I have a 1994 FJ80 Toyota LandCruiser that I would like to sell. It currently has 141k miles. It is not the model with the locking diffs, but it looks, runs and drives fantastic. It comes with the third row seat, ice-cold AC and Michelin tires. Brakes are most excellent, redone very recently! Many parts in the engine bay -including the harness from the dealer- have been newly replaced, they do not have the wear of 141k miles. Recent oil service from the dealer in town. The only issues to disclose is that it has a salvage rebuilt title (was damaged on the drivers side, no frame damage and not a flood car) and that the front axle outer seals by the hub have some seepage that does not affect they way it drives, but should be addressed soon– It is priced accordingly to these factors, way below what other LandCruisers with the same mileage sell for. Overall, a clean truck to take on the trail without fear.
Located in Wichita, Kansas. Give me a call at (316) 204 9433, ask for Tyler.

Would a set of OME springs give my FZJ80 any lift with the stock (but new) Toyota shocks? I would just like an inch to an inch and a half of lift for more clearance with 33's. From experiance how would the ride, handling, and body role be? Anyone have pictures of just the springs and stock or aftermarket shocks on their 80?

I plan to put them on a 94 FZJ80 I purchased for a steal

As the title says, I'm getting an intermittent P0988 error.

When the code goes away the transmission operates perfectly, but when the CEL comes on, it goes into "limp mode" and I have to shift it between 2 and D in order to drive properly and prevent over working the transmission.

After doing a bunch of research online and reading the FSM, I decided to have a mechanic friend check it out. He informed me that there are no shorts to ground, no loss of voltage, or any other issues that he could find with the wiring or voltage signals. In fact; after he verified, then cleared the CEL, the problem didn't come back for him the entire day.

I decided to get a few repair quotes. They ended up ranging from a $900 "we think that will fix it" quote, to a $3,000 "rebuild the whole thing" quote.

That didn't sit well with me and the consensus seemed to be that the transmission WAS the problem so I decided I would just swap the entire transmission myself. I found a used one through LKQ with 30k less miles than my Jeep.

After the swap, which included all new fluid (a flush) & new filters, everything seemed fine for just over 2 weeks, which was the longest the CEL went away prior to the swap, then the code came back. :( Then went away and came back again twice. Like I said; it's intermittent.

I did a little more research and decided to replace TCM. After that the issue went away again, but only for a day and a half.

I can swap the PCM, but I have the 4.7L H.O. and sourcing a PCM takes a bit more time since they need to ship one from out of state.

I really don't mind doing the swap, but I just don't know if going down the wrong road, or if the PCM could really be the cause of the problem.

Could my replacement transmission have been ruined by my old TCM being bad?

What are the odds that the replacement transmission has the SAME exact error code?

I'm thinking of taking it back to my mechanic friend (not free) and telling him to keep it until the code pops up for him, then check the wiring again.

Sincerely,

Frustrated and very-close-to-broke... :REOutShootinghunter

Zeta Handguards
3.5" Rox Speed Handlebar Risers
Kenda K270s front and rear
Rim Locks front and rear
Ultra Heavy Duty tubes front and rear
Custom rear rack

The bike has been ridden very intermittently with the exception of one 500 mile trip across WV. The bike now has 8xx miles on it, and that will change as I still ride it a bit here and there. The oil was changed when I got the bike and when I got back from the WV trip. I have a filter and oil to do one more oil change which I can do prior to sale, or include the supplies with the bike. This bike has been well cared for and never crashed. I am a novice rider, so I never did any power mods because I wanted to become comfortable before I upped the HP. I have realized that while riding is fun, it's not for me and I have too many other hobbies that consume my time and $$.

I'm looking to get $3700 OBO out of the bike. It's located in Derwood, MD(near Rockville/Olney) and I am willing to travel a reasonable distance to meet up with a buyer. I also work in Arlington, VA if that is more convenient for you. Title is in hand free and clear.

I just got finished installing my controller about an hour ago and thought I'd share a little. I've got a M8000 on my Discovery and I've been wanting to get the wireless remote for it for awhile now. I've read all kinda mixed reviews on them online, mostly people worried about the delay. I didn't notice any extra delay time compared to the wired controller. The other thing is I couldn't find any really good descriptions of how to wire it up. As it turns out it just plugs into the port just like the hand controller. I didn't like that so I hard wired mine into the control pack. Now I can use the wireless anytime and just have to hit the buttons, or I can just plug in the wired controller if I need to. No wire connections dangling anywhere. If you look at the plug on the contractor control you'll see it's a 5 pin setup, but the wireless plug that goes into has 6 pins. On mine all the colors matched up except the white, that one was orange on the wireless controller. So I spliced them into the contractor control and now it's all working perfectly. Here's a couple of pictures of the wiring.
The led must have messed with the colors the yellow looking one is actually orange, and the red is connected to a red.
Here you can see the white wire that is not being used from the wireless controller. I'll take a picture of it finished tomorrow when I get time. As everyone here knows hopefully options are your best friend when it comes to recovery. All in all I'm very happy with the initial impressions of the controller.

Here's a shot of the controller finished you'd never think of it having the wireless controller. The receiver is up top behind the plastic grill cover.

Glassboard is a social networking app with the emphasis on privacy. You share messages, photos, and videos only with the folks who you invite to participate. It's designed for small work groups, class projects, friends, any group that wants to have a private way to keep in touch on a topic. Facebook is fine for those family reunions that you want to share with the world, but there are times when you want to keep things private.

Once you open a Glassboard account, you can create as many boards as you need, and invite people to join a board via email. Once people join, they can post comments, and see the comments that others add. Glassboard has push notification, so you're updated whenever someone adds information to your board. You can set "quiet hours" when you don't want to be interrupted by traffic on a board.

There are Glassboard apps for iOS, Android and Windows 7 phone devices. You also can sign in and participate with your group via a web browser interface.

Glassboard is free. Check it out here http://www.glassboard.com/

It pains me to do this but my wife has decided she wants a jeep so her suburban is up for sale.
It is a 1998 Chevy Suburban 2500 4x4 6.5L Turbo Diesel with 238,167 miles It still runs great. We have owned it for 6 years we were the second owners. I searched long and hard for this suburban. It is my wife's daily driver and has yet to leave her stranded. I put new tires 265/75R16 BF AT's, shocks and starter at the end of last year. I have most all the service records since it was new.
While the engine is still strong the body is showing its age, not bad but not perfect. The gas gauge is not working, only the front stereo speakers work, the driver side window decides it does not want to go down about 5% of the time and the AC/Heater does not work well in extreme heat or cold. (one of the dampeners is not working and I have not taken the time to pull the dash apart to fix it.)

I hate to get rid of it but can not justify keeping a third car around.

I am asking $5,000 firm located in Downey California

Hey guys, I'm in the middle of a trailer build and I'm to the point of making it a true roller! I would like to get some input on how long to make the tongue. The trailer is 4x6 in size and I plan on leaving room for extra storage on front of the bed. How long, from hitch to the first contactable structure ,i.e box, cooler, gas cans, etc. , is your tongue? Is there any pros/cons to shorter vs. longer? I plan on pulling this with a Jeep JK unlimited.

Thanks for any advice and/or help anyone can give me!

Well we really went and did it this time. We have been shopping for a new adventure mobile for a while now. I have to admit Jeep was not on our radar. I have been a Japanese car guy for a long time. Out of frustration leaving a Toyota dealer, I figured why not check out Jeep. I was pleasantly surprised that I could get a stripped vehicle without a bunch of useless crap. The 2012 4Runner pushed me over the edge, I think they have it confused with the Land Cruiser these days. Nice truck and all but they have totally forgotten where they came from. It's now just a luxury vehicle, The FJ was better but it kinda felt pretentious and the back doors are down right dumb. After driving the Jeep I was sold. Maybe my expectations were low but it made me smile regardless.

The Pentastar is actually a little boring to tell the truth. Compared to my Nissan in her prime anyway. Then again the MPG numbers are good compared to Nissan and Toyota. I did not spring for the Rubicon. We don't plan on rock crawling and they are a bit spendy. Sure I would love the locker, but everything else seemed a bit overkill for us. It wasn't worth 10 grand to me and then you have to get all the fluff to go with it too.

I wont insult you guys with a driveway shot. We have a 10 day trip coming up at the end of the month. I have a few things to sort out before then.

GPS mount
Rear cargo light
Drop down table on the tail gate

This is the short list of course, long list to follow :sombrero:

Intermediate List

Rack, to carry my canoe
Tires, something less effeminate
Rear locker

Probably no lift for us. I don't like it too rocky, the beer gets shook up and the dog has trouble sleeping

Long term List

Desert pinstripe
Patina

Heavy Duty Bumpers for Expedition/Overland Use: Practical Necessity or Superfluous and Heavy?

The topic is off-road bumpers, both rear and front. I’m talking about aftermarket or custom made heavy duty bumpers designed to replace the factory bumpers on your average expedition vehicle.

Some possible reasons to purchase a heavy duty bumper:

-Protects vehicle from major damage caused by hazards found on difficult or extreme trails/roads
-Provides a proper mounting point for a winch
-Improves approach and departure angles relative to stock bumper
-Provides quality recovery points
-Looks cool

Some possible reasons NOT to purchase a heavy duty bumper:

-Wastes available payload capacity (esp. in lighter, smaller rigs)
-Changes vehicle handling characteristics for the worse (especially in lighter, smaller rigs)
-Expensive
-Just plain unnecessary for most people most of the time
-Draws attention to vehicle (may attract thieves)
-Looks ugly

I realize the best answer to this question may be “it depends”, but I’m interested in your thoughts. Under what conditions and for which vehicles is heavy duty bumper protection desirable? When is it okay but not necessary? When is it actually harmful?

Thanks,
Cee-Jay

PS: I know I'm being a little simplistic here. For example, not all replacement bumpers are created equal; some are more efficiently designed than others.

We are going to be renting a 4wd camper in Tasmania for the whole time and have found the guide that gives a few off-road routes and camping spots. Any suggestions on things not to miss? We are not leaving for another 7 months but figure we'd start asking the questions now.

We love hiking, biking and kayaking

We don't plan to make a huge agenda just want to make sure we don't miss anything critical

(Wish I could bring the Jeep)

First off, really great forum and some really nice builds on here! I am glad to have found it.

Well, I am looking at purchasing a Suburban in the next month or so and I have some questions. I will mainly be using it for daily driving, some exploring, and towing my RV. My main question is, does anyone tow with their rigs? If so, how much weight? I am looking at the older body styles (89-91) and leaning towards the 5.7 for reliability and fuel efficiency. I am just afraid it will not be strong enough to pull our RV the few times a year we need to use it or take it somewhere. It weighs 8500# loaded, so I am just not wondering if I might need to consider a 454 instead. Now I will be getting the 3/4 ton chassis either way for the stronger axles and suspension components. I am hoping to find one with a mild lift and I will be adding airbags to it myself to compensate for some of the weight. I have a ton of experience towing bigger trailers so i don't need an education there, but definitely need some input on the Sub for towing/hauling or any other things I may have forgotten about.

Also, what about reliability between the two engines? I know the 5.7 TBI is extremely reliable, but what about the 454? I considered the 96-99 era just due to power and the Vortec deal, but I like the older body styles and interiors so much better. Just have so much more soul, but anyways....thank for any input on this and please feel free to comment on anything else I may have failed to remember or inquire about. Mahalo!!

All I come up with are the larger "truck boxes" such as Buyer and Delta brands. I actually installed a couple of these
on my trailer but I need a particular (and odd) size: 10 x 10 x 38. I also approached the original builder of the trailer
but he used to buy the boxes from an local aluminum shop that recently went belly-up. He is in the process of lining
up a replacement and can't help at the moment. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way...E

Took a 3 day trip visiting the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountain range thinking we would enjoy some early summer weather.

Ended up with 8 vehicles and a good group of guys exploring and on day 2 got to explore some new territory for me.

We traveled up Hwy 14 through Palmdale and Lancaster exiting west at Jawbone Canyon. We traveled through some easy roads up to just over 6000 feet where we made our base camp. Even though the weather forecast was for clear skys the Sierra's sometimes can "make" its own weather. When we arrived early Friday morning our camp was socked in with fog, drizzle and low temps. Out came the sweaters and coats as we set up tents and emptied our vehicles of the camping gear.

Shortly we were off exploring and as we desended the mountains east into the desert, off came the sweaters and coats as the temps soon reached the low 80's.

Even though several of the vehicles were pretty much stock that didn't stop most of the guys wanting some kind of a challange so off we went taking trails with names like Nightmare Gulch overview and Last Chance Canyon.

Most had fun along with a couple of guys doing the "V" notch in the Canyon.

We enjoyed the usual sights like Burro Smidt's famous tunnel through the mountain and then later in the day took a different route back up into the Sierra's to our base camp through Dove Springs OHV arriving later than we would have liked at camp.

That night it continued to blow with cold drizzle and some temps in the low 30's (so much for summer weather) but in the morning it had blown out and we had a clear cool refreshing day to greet us.

Day 2 was a trip driving various mountian trails north over to Lake Isabella and then taking on the challanging Freeway Ridge Loop. A difficult trail with lots of challanges and beautiful views.

Fun to actually see some indian grinding holes just like the ones I saw in my school books when I was a kid studying California history.

I didn't know there was any gold in this part of the Sierra's!

Here one of the stock vehicles, a Dodge Durango, makes it way up but not without a suffering some front left bumper damage.

Chuck hit a rather large boulder and sheared off the bolts that held his steering together, It was a two hours trail fix but the guys in this group came prepared.

Chuck made it down the mountain and had to call the trip short but still had a great time. I think he was just glad that he didn't have to leave his rig on the trail and come back another day to try and fix it!

We made it back to camp late that evening and on the way we got a great view of the bigger than usual appearence of the moon:

The final day was spent packing up and then having a little fun in the Dove Springs OHV before we hit pavement:

I was tired than afternoon when I got home, but it was a good kind of tired........if you know what I mean.
Thanks,

I have search this forum but was unable to find the information that closely pertain to my current D2 problem. Please share any feedbacks and thoughts on the following issue/s. Thanks in advance.

So i have been trying to be productive and attempting to fix my wife's 2001 D2 since her last episode when the truck overheated and went into limp mode on the same day. We actually had it towed to our driveway and that was 2 weeks ago. Here is the summary of my project.

2001 D2 with 124K we're the 2nd owner, truck was dealer serviced from new by previous owner based on the sales receipts kept. Head gasket & ABS modulator replaced at 71K. Bought at 105K a year ago and so far replaced the front DS and kept up with the PM

Parts replaced:

- Battery (warranty)

- alternator (reman) due to the voltage reading shown 11-12V while engine running MIL P1562

- idler pulleys (70MM & 80MM) when I noticed that the bearings started to go bad

- tensioner pulley (replaced with metal type) also noticed the bearings on the plastic pulley were bad

- drive belt since I found several cranks on the belt that were straight from end to end

- spark plugs due to SES came on and MIL code PO307 showed misfire from bank 7

- ignition wires replaced after the plugs since MIL PO307 came back

- upper inlet manifold gasket PM recommended

- O2 sensor (PS pre CAT)replaced due to code PO130

- top off coolant (50/50)still topping off once the engine cooled off & "gurgling" sound still present

I noticed the followings while working on the project:

- oil in the IACV hoses by the throttle body

- varnish color buildups inside the last 4 ports on the upper manifold; bank 4,8,5 and 7

- HT wire #7 seemed not long enough to connect to the plug and excessive carbon buildup with plug #7

- coolant by the valley gasket in the rear but not sure if this was from the spill earlier while disconnecting the coolant hoses by the throttle body

Test drive

On SUN drove up to 45 mph w/o SES coming on & topped off coolant

On MON noticed coolant low so topped off and drove up to 30 mph with SES came on and each time the engine "stutter" briefly

MIL codes PO307, PO130 and PO300 were all present! WTFudge!
I do not want to advertise my mindset nor potential cargo when out and about. While I have several Maxpedition bags that I love and work well for me, they scream 'something cool inside.' One of my tan Colossus is a camera bag. As I was walking home with it over my shoulder a cop walked along side and asked 'Is that Maxpedition Tac bag? I saw you coming up the street and thought I would look at it if you don't mind.' He was just curious about it, but nonetheless recognized it from a far.

So I'm exploring good alternatives. I just found a brand new previous generation camel Back MULE in olive and tan. It's a bit small in storage, but long in hydration and has a great CCW spot for ease of access and near invisibility. This seems like a great solution, gives me a way to meter my daily H2O intake and blends in with the millions of other back pack toting folk. It's just a bit awkward now, perhaps I will acclimate to it, but I can see where this will not always be a good idea.

Vests al a adventure / photography seem like a GREAT solution as well. Cool even on the hottest summer days, pocket rich - too rich actually for my simple daily carry gear, and the longer length is really nice for ccw. Problem is these are not exactly en vogue except for the antediluvian crowd and they too can look tactical. I can get over the fashion statement pretty easily and am thinking that a subtle NIKON / CANON etc. patch on the back or front breast pocket would diffuse suspicion pretty easily. Again, not always ideal, but very convenient all around.

So there are two options that can fit a great many needs. The vest, while my favorite option, has a couple draw backs as does the MULE.

Any ideas on non-tac appearing means of easily hauling your daily gear and a ccw?

Maybe I should velcro a flowery peace sign on the maxpeditions??
