Year: 2003

The main reason for purchasing this vehicle was the ability to cary additional passengers on longer trips, while the FJ is a great platform and tremendously capable, it lacks room in the back seat for long trips. Specifically lacking room for a rear facing car seat.
The GX also has a larger fuel tank (24 gal) compared to the FJ (19 gal) all the while retaining the same fuel mileage.
It also features the same 4wd system as the land cruiser 100 series (although some say better) utilizing the renowned Toyota TRAC system.
So enough of the background, now onto the build...

This is how she sat when I brought her home. Screaming soccer mom. Man the ride was so smooth.

The next move was to get the front end lifted to accommodate larger tires. After speaking with the guys at Sierra Expeditions, I ordered a set of Ironman springs and shocks of the "B" rating.

After this, the move was to bigger tires. Having good luck with Treadwright in the past, I decided to go with the TW Warden in 285/70r17.

I have an Indel B fridge mounted in the back wired directly to an optima yellowtop under the hood.
Also just received a set of ARB skids to protect the bottom side from TRDParts4U. Pics and installation will be happening this weekend.

That picture was taken on the HWM trip with Central Overland. And is how she sits today.

Future plans include front and rear bumpers, winch, cargo barrier with rear storage configuration, and LED interior lights.

Stay tuned...

Im trying to guage everyones interest in a 255/100/16 MT tire?

This will be an 8 ply- DOT rated Michelin XZL type tread/tire.

Should measure to a true skinny 36.0" and fit up to a few inch lift with alot less rubbing issues and little trimming and have a fairly similarly light steering feel as other skinny tires.

These will not be retreads and should wear similar to other big brand MTs without the "out of round" qualities of an Interco.

this is just a "feeler" thread to guage interest.

obviously price is a big factor for most people- so for hypothetical reason to guage interest lets say $200-$250each is a range. (which should be fairly competitive given the cost of 35s and 37s these days.)

My main interest is that i figure i can sell off all my spacer sets for my 40 and 80 along with rims with less backspacing bought to bandaid the width issues of 12.5" tires........and pretty much pay for half a set of tires right outa the gate.
also id love to get back to stock steelies on the 40 and maintain that tall skinny look but have a bit more height than a 33.(the only tall skinny option thats not a bias ply or an interco wobbler) for the 80s- id love to stay low lift and run the bombproof forged oem alloys vs abandoning for rims of different backspacing or spacers and trimming/sawzall options.

Hello fellow overland friends,

We're about to undertake an overland trip through Eastern Europe and down to Turkey and Iran this summer. Our car is a Toyota Land Cruiser 90 Series, 2001 model.

I want to be able to cover the windows in the car for sun/heating/privacy/intruders.

We will get permanent black toned sun filters (5% - very dark) put on all back windows. However, still looking for something in the front and front passager windows.

Found this:
http://bit.ly/11Pu59X
http://amzn.to/10Geki6

Both doen't seem like perfect solutions. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Something basic and low cost to keep sun and thieves out when we're camping. We'll sleep in a roof top tent (Autohome - Columbus)

Thank you in advance!

Figured I might as well take some time on this rainy day to start my own build thread.

I recently sold my Defender 90 because although it was nostalgic, amazing in the trails and a ton of fun, the truth of the matter is it wasn't practical. Seeting for (2) and not much...errrr ANY creature comforts, it just wasnt the right vehicle to build up for overland travel. Not to mention the trouble in getting parts, and the constant working on random silly things got old.

So Enter the 100 series. Probably the most luxurious vehicle I've ever owned, and it happens to be one of the best platforms to build an overland vehicle on... SCORE!

Living in the Northeast, i will never buy a vechile from here. They might as well spray the roads with hydrochloric acid in the winters. I refused to buy a rust bucket.

I picked up this beauty from Colorodo, sight unseen. I bought it from JC Wynn from Wynco trucks. very nice guy, great to deal with and good communication. I have nothing but good things to say about him and he was very straight up about everything. It was completely stock and VERY clean from the pics and my conversation with JC. Also had meticulous service records to boot!

128K miles on the clock and a factory rear diff lock what more could you want?

Now JC just so happen to be 30 minutes from Slee offroad. And with a little extra cash from my defender sale I had him drop it off, and dealt with Amory to get some goodies add on and save me from hours on my back in the driveway. I have nothing but good thinks to say about Amory, his customer service and the job Slee did on the install/work.

List of goodies were:

ARB 2.5" HD lift

TJM outback T13 Bumper

Full Slee Skid plate system

New brake pads and front wheel bearing/hub service

So after dealing with a not so friendly shipping service (Jays Auto transport) Would never deal with him again after I was cursed off when HE made a mistake on the paper work that cost us both some money. this is how it was dropped off for my first look on it with my own eyes

I had picked up a very slightly used Superwinch EPI9.0 and needed to make some modifications to have it fit, mainly to remote mount the solenoid. (more on that later)

With the bumper off (love the fact its two pieces and the winch tray stays on) i put in the winch on with grade 8 hardware of course

The fabbed up a bracket for a isolator switch,

Found some space near the fuse box (with existing holes/hardware)

Wired it up

And put it in (w/ Stainless hardware)

Finished off the rest of the wiring with proper clamps (not a million zip ties) using existing hardware.. (dont like drilling holes into a perfectly good peice of painted metal.

Hard to see here, but I left the leads a little long (Looped them once), as I plan on putting a bigger battery in and dont want to cut the cables short incase I needed to re-route them.

Bumper back on (with hawse fairlead) - and the battery wire routed through a new hole with proper grommets. I'm waiting for the extended wiring kit to come in from Superwinch before I put the solenoid box on and finish the connections (as you see the 3 other holes I made for those wires). Also have a new Amsteel synthetic rope coming in. I used all stainless hardware for anything thats not load bearing. Anything that was is all Grade 8 of course. It blows my mind when people spend all this time and money on mods, and then cheap out on the hardware, and in 1 week its all rusted up.

As I wait for the wiring kit and winch rope - i figured lets take the running boards off in anticipation of my sliders coming in soon from Bump it Off Road. I am also getting a dual swing out rear bumper from him. Should be here by months end. Haven't seen the products yet, but so far Mike at BIOR has been really responsive and great to deal with. I'm sure the products will be just as good. :victory:

You'll also notice I swapped the Chrome wheels for the stock Alloys that also came with the truck. Put on a set of 285/17/16 Good Year Duratracs. I wouldnt have minded a slightly taller tire (34-35") but didn't want to go any wider than these are. So I stuck with the 33's and think they will do fine. The Duratracs are great on road (not loud at all), and aren't mushy at all (as lot of reviews said but I think they just got the wrong load rating) Haven't tested them offroad yet but they look (lol) like they will do fine.

My goal here is to make a comfortable and capable rig for overland travel (on and off road) and remote camping/exploring with the wife and dog Its not going to be so much a trail/rock crawling truck... the paint is just too damn pretty lol)

Not so distant future plans will be the aformentioned rear bumper and sliders, a hot water shower system (haven't decided what route I want to go with just yet), an aux fuel tank, and some storage solutions.... stay tuned!

I currently drive a 98 Jeep XJ and while its setup perfectly for me and my wife, it seems to be a bit on the small side for us plus our two kids for extended trips. We are planning a pan-american trip in two years time so I want something we can travel in for extended periods. I have a small off road trailer with a RTT we can sleep in and carry all our gear.

Anyways, we started shopping for a new vehicle and came up with a decision between a 470 or a LC. Both 98 models. LC has both front and rear lockers. 470 has rear. Mileage is similar but the 470 is quite a bit more money. What makes one model more preferable than the other? (Other than the obvious trim level and add on goodies in the lexus?) Axles and drive train is the same? Are the engines the same? We have to travel to buy either vehicle so I can't look at them side by side to compare. Around 250 000km on each. What's the life expectancy of a LC?

Thanks for your time :)

I recently restored the seats in my 1996 FZJ80 with the Metric TLC leather restoration kits. I thought I would post up some tips when doing this so as to possibly help others.

I recently restored the seats in my 1996 FZJ80 with the Metric TLC leather restoration kits. I thought I would post up some tips when doing this so as to possibly help others.

Metric TLC: http://www.metrictlc.com/
Labrak: http://www.labrak.com/

More info on seat kits: http://shop.metrictlc.com/1993-97-80...overs-W-01.htm

Overall I am extremely happy with the kit. The thickness and quality of the material is amazing. The new seats have really transformed my trucks comfort level. I chose to replace both front seat bottoms and install seat heaters in the front seats. I decided to do the first 2 rows as the 3rd row seats are not used in my truck.

Let me say that I am a total newbie when it comes to doing any type of upholstery work. Because of this and because I am somewhat of a perfectionist, this project took me a long time. That being said, the outcome is worth it. I actually really enjoyed the process as I am usually working with grease or some hot metal. This was a nice change of pace.

I would recommend that you purchase the hog ring kit and pliers when you order the leather kits. I also opted for the seat back netting rebuilding kits as well as the armrest covers.

The single most important thing when doing this is to remember: ONE SEAT AT A TIME! This is imperative as I had to routinely go back and forth and compare things from the seat I was working on and how things were put together stock on the other seat. Take your time and be meticulous about how things come together.

I am not going to go a step by step route here as that would be impossible, but will try to cover each area and some of the troubles I ran into.

First thing I did obviously was to pull all the seats, and clean the carpets very well. I even had a little helper of mine work with the simple green to clean all the plastic trim that was pulled off. :)

I currently own a 2013 Rubicon Unlimited with a 2.5" AEV lift and 33" tires, but I would like more interior space and improved ride and reliabilty. I'm looking at purchasing a 2004-2007 landcruiser for improved reliability, more interior space, longevity, and improved ride. What are the common "issues" to look for when considering a LC with 90-140k miles? Plans would be to upgrade springs and shocks with OME and add 33" BFG's. This will become my daily driver and I'll add about 20k miles per year and engage in mild overlanding and camping throughout the Midwest.

Kinda weird? Some metal flakes and Im gonna be tearing into again. First time was a rebuild. That seem to last a few months. Hoping a bearing failed and nothing so serious. Thanks

Well, after an 11 year absense of a 60 series in my life my fiancé and I picked this '85 up from our good friend KC after a drive down to Lander. I will post up more details soon regarding the truck and plans for it. For now just a few pics.

With KC and his sharp looking FJ62

Pulled off to check out a lake along the Wind River on the way home.

And the best part, this thing runs and drives like a dream. Pulled 65 without any effort the whole drive and even maintained 60-65 climbing a 9,500 ft pass. Even better yet, after topping it off in Jackson, it averaged an unbelievable 17.2 mpg confirmed by the chase Subaru. I am in love all over again.

I sold my beloved Disco 2 last September back in Vancouver before moving to Cali. It was probably the most heavily modded truck that I personally ever saw. I loved it to death. Put a new motor in it at a cost of $11,000 only 50k km's before selling it. I was going to build another one with a CA 2004 truck, but decided with all the motor issues and lack of decent alternatives, I would look at LR3's. Then I ran into threads about the GX470 builds.

Last night I walked away from a gorgeous black LR3 loaded with locking rear diff. It had 75k miles and was a 2007 for $16,900. I ended up buying a 2005 GX470 with 100,000 miles for much more money. It was also mint though, has KDSS and had the 90k mile service done. I also bought a 24 month/24k mile warranty from the dealer. I know mods might screw up my warranty, but I figured it was worth a try and hopefully I won't need it. I certainly used the one on my Disco, and luckily, LR honored the warranty despite extensive mods, since as they said, it's meant to be taken off road. I maxed out the cash value of the warranty on that truck. My hope is that I will not have the same issues with the GX.

So....

Where do I start? I want to do this in stages. My first step is to get the truck to look like this:

Hey guys, we are here from Just Differentials and Nitro Gear out of Washington State. Some of you may know us, others may not. But we want to change that!

Well, got the turbo kit ordered today, as well as a bunch of maintenence items. Also installed an ARB CKMTA12 24 Volt Twin 100% Duty Cycle compressor.

The turbo kit we used was this one:
http://jeffersonstatemachining.com/P...s_Services.php

The kit was sourced from Keith at Jefferson State Machining, he was quite knowledgable, and quick to return my call, and is in the USA. Price is good too, but I told him he should raise his price:

Products/Services

The kit was very nice and features:
-Garret GT Series Turbo
-Oil feed line w/ direct fitting, return line w/ weld in bung for oilpan
-13bt type reproduction Exhaust Manifold, gaskets
-Turbo to Manifold adapter plate.

Not included:
-12" piece of 2" exhaust
-3 bolt flange w/ flare to attach downpipe
-Exhaust
-Depending on your air cleaner tube, you may need to source a 2" 45 degree silicone connecter, and a 2.75-2.0" reducer and another roughly 12" chunk of 2" tube.

Install is pretty straight forward.
Before starting the job:
-check your oil filter, if it points up you will need a new adapter. Ours did, so we sourced the appropriate parts from Steven at EBI Cruisers in BC.
-I'd also suggest picking up a 2' chunk of 2" stainless exhaust pipe to use for the turbo-intake and the air cleaner-turbo
-I'd suggest bringing the turbo to an exhaust shop to have them fab a 3 bolt flared flange with a 90 deg bend and about a 16" downpipe so you can at least drive it to the exhaust shop when finished.

Real simple, extend it and use 3/16th's plate and angle for a quick, functional jerry can holder.

The first thing was to strip it down and remove the bumper and weld it to the fab table.

Extend the swing out by knocking the end cap off, insert the next size smaller square tubing inside and weld all 3 pieces together with one bead.

Slee tells me is too big to go under the hood (dual batt )
And they tell me they dont recomend inside the car ( rear quarter panels) because of cost amount of work and posinle odors.

So all i can think of now is throwing it up on the rack ( bajarack long rack)
Bolted in a metal case , bolted to the rack
Permanent instalation bring the lines downunder the snorkle and into the engine bay

Also use the case to store the tire inflation and repair kits

What nice cases would get the job done?

Plastic or metal?

Anyone know the actual dimensions of a twin compressor??

Mine is in the box in my warehouse

Thank you all

When my boss comes up and asked me if I would be interested in a Land Cruzer. Well 45minutes and 700 later I have a 1986 Toyota fj60.

I've been feverish with a cold, and loopy on cold medicine, and went to look at a 1997 LX450 with 216k miles.

I've been a Jeep guy for a few years and have a Chevy truck, I am thinking about getting rid of the truck and getting an 80 Series or LX450.

They are asking $8500, the exhaust looks good and the body is very pretty. Dark green metallic. There is grease on the birfields so maybe it has been maintained. The dealer specializes in higher end vehicles.

It has the front and rear diff locks. It is clean underneath, just the usual corrosion from being in Ohio. I got down on my hands and knees and looked under the nose and the side. It has a Slee winch bar with a winch installed.

I told my wife about it, the miles are freaking her out. But it might be The One.

Any advice appreciated!

So we jumped ship from the Jeep and bought a 2001 LX470. The WJ was great but was a little small for our needs.
We looked at many and wound up settling with this one with 160k miles and perfect service history.
I already have many plans for this one. Will post more later.

And if you have ever done any work on a website/forum, you would be able to tell how much time this guy puts into it.
So, being the nice guy I am....I thought I would steal one of his ideas and put my own spin on it.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?
So here we go,

I loved his idea of putting the scangauge into the overhead consol, but did it a little different.
This panel was meant to hold a a garage door opener. And because my cruiser is not allowed in the garage, I mounted my scangauge onto the bracket (with some mods) that was ment to hold the remote control.

Would have turned out perfect for me except I wear bi-focal lenses and have to tilt my head back to see the gauge. Still worth it. I need to see my trans temps because I tow with this monster I love so much. The codes to program the scangauge for trans temp are also on his site.

Next idea of his I am going to steal, I mean borrow is using the 80 series diff switch to control my ARBs that YOTAMASTERS are going to install.

To be continued.
Jeff

Just took delivery of it today.

Heres the story:

I had sold my diesel land rover defender 90 a month ago b/c although fun, funky, and great in the trails... it was not as practcial of a vehicle as i would have liked. (and by I i mean the wife).

So i started looking into land cruisers and got set on a 100 series.

Originally the plan was to find an already built truck but I got impatient, and with a wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket from the defender sale i pulled the trigger on a 1998 LC w/ 127k miles, totally stock.... sight unseen! It looked very clean, and i had great conversation w/ the seller. It was a california and colorado truck and showed no rust at all ( i refuse to ever buy a truck from the North East - the salt here is ridiculous... and if I Ever drive this in snow here I will douse it with Waxoyl and WD-40 before each drive.!)

Just so happens the seller was minutes from Slee off road.... so after the transaction was done i had him drop it off at Slee where Amory was a gem to deal with, and hooked me up with some goodies

TJM T13 outback front bumper
Full skid plate system (Aluminum where available)
Front wheel bearing/hub service
New brake pads (while it was apart)
2.5" ARB lift w/ diff drop kit

I would have had them provide a rear bumper but their fab shop was moving an they were going to be out of stock for some time...... so I calll Mike from Bump it Off road and he too was a gem to deal with. Although i haven't received the sliders or bumpers i ordered from him just yet, i'm sure they will be up to my expectations.

Anyways - i'm looking forward to alot of fun in this truck (with slightly more lux than the defender offered and a bit less down time :sombrero: )

New tires are being put on the original alloys (bye bye chrome wheels) tomorrow... Once done ( in a month or so.... then again i'm sure i'll never be totally done).. I'll make a build thread. I have a few other goodies sitting in the garage ready to go on.

Hope to do alot of camping and long "off the radar" trips with the Wife and Dog in this one.... and kids too one day when the time comes.
