Hi Thanks Overland expo! I have been a die hard jeep guy but at the expo i drove the lr-4 and the range rover. man I loved them but I nearly have haert failure when I look at the $$. So can some of you land rover guys explain the difference in the Lr-4 and the Lr-3 specifically as it relates to overland and off roading? for example what is the HSE package on the Lr-4.? Can you get a a center locker and rear locker on the Lr-4 on the lr-3? what kind of mods can be accomplished with the lr-3 and 4 such as fitting larger tires? 33 Inch tires with higher side walls? how do you lift them mildly 2-3 inches? Are center and rear lockers available on the lr-3? what is the best year for the lr-3? and anything else that I should ask but don't know to ask. Thanks maybe I'll have to change my name from jeep or tacoma to LR?

We have a Land Rover Special Vehicle Quadtech 1 body that we are going to mod, and use for a while until we can afford what we really want.

I spoke to Land Rover SV department today ( who were very helpful ) about a number of things relating to these units, my main question was the fitting of twin roof racks, and the load rating for the racks, they advised me that a full length rack ( like the ones in the pictures below, these are LRSV ones ) will take 150kg, I was looking at fitting 2 single Patriot racks, and having our roof tent on the rear section, however, the rear body as internal fixing point that the rack needs to be fixed to, I am unsure if the weight of a 1.6 Hannibal tent 65kg empty will be ok on this part of the body?

By the looks of all these pictures, theres 4 mounting points on the Quadtech

I bought my D2 about a month ago and it was missing the bumper, so I figured I'd take the opportunity to try my hand at a little fabrication work. I really liked the tube bumpers for I'd seen on a few D2's, but there was no way I could fork out close to $700 for one since I'm in college. I went out and mocked up how much tube I'd need and headed off to find the local metal shop where I picked up some 2" x .140 wall and 1.75" x .120 wall for just $40 bucks! Also picked up some 1/4" for the brackets. A friend and I hacked away at it with nothing but an angle grinder until we needed to bend the stuff. Luckily, my buddy knew some of the guys over at JD2 and they helped us out. They're some great guys with a great product. I think I ended up with around 20 hours and $50 bucks in the bumper. This was my first fab job, so I didn't integrate a winch in it, but that's in line for the next version.

Land Rover management is supposed to be reconsidering the plan to produce a basic, rugged utility vehicle. The idea of building the new Defender in India has also been set aside. Reportedly, the new plan is to base the new Defender on the chassis under development for the next generation Discovery. The aluminum chassis will be built in England alongside the chassis for the Range Rover.

Hi everyone

I've lurked here for a while. Been through multiple trucks since I've been on here, and, frankly never got around to really building one for adventure, whether that was due to lack of money, time, or motivation. Now with my RRS I've been slowly doing a few things here and there with the intent of exploring in the back of my mind. Please try not to flame me for owning a mall cruiser, I do get her in the dirt from time to time, promise!

I picked her up in October last year with 85k on the clock and 6 months of CPO warranty still on her. Came with the luxury package, and much to my surprise - the REAR AXLE LOCKER! About 3 days after picking it up from Land Rover of Tysons Corner, Superstorm Sandy blew through the east coast, bringing early snowfall to areas of West Virginia only 2 hours west of here - I had to go and test the Rover.

Beautiful vista (all stock, truck in off road height)

Hmmm, still looking for some unplowed roads

We found them! My buddy chaining up - this is on the Dolly Sods forest access road, FS19 if anyone out there is familiar with the area. Drifts were up to 4 feet in places after just one day of snow. This road is often straight uphill, with nothing on one side but a hill, and a good 150' drop on the other with nothing to keep your rig from rolling to its demise! The only other rigs we saw out there were a late model GMC full size pickup on 33" ATs (super nice folks, stuck in a drift, helped dig them out, too new to the RRS and its capabilities to risk getting it stuck pulling them out) and a Suzuki Samurai on what must have been 36" (at least) swampers of sort. We talked to the driver of the Samurai for a bit, as a local he seemed a bit thrown off by two "city boys" snow wheeling in a stock $60k (when new, anyway) truck :D The RRS did not disappoint and not once left us stranded, despite crappy all season tires on puny 19" rims!

At this point I realized that I was in love with this truck. It drives like a dream on-road and off, but needed some more aggressive rubber, so I figured I'd throw a bit of money into it.

Lifted ~2" with ToddCo adjustable lift rods, LR3 18" wheels and 265/65R18 Cooper Discoverer A/T3 tires fitted. Thule roof rack added. Out at the outdoor range I frequent that requires high clearance to get to (and 4wd if its wet). Truck is in normal height here.

Plenty of room for toys in the back :D

Loaded up for kayaking - this shot shows there is still plenty of tire/fender clearance in access height when needed for loading up the roof or sneaking under obstacles (need to remind my wife about the last one...more on that later)

Happy (if tired) pups - why wouldn't they be, they're getting chauffeured in a Range Rover after a day of hiking!

Up next for it is a roof-top luggage carrier solution (probably an enclosed Thule box, not a huge fan of the 'safari' look of the exposed racks, driving around metro DC anyway) and some sort of awning system that is easily attached/detached from the roof rack. I am also looking for a fold out camp style table that will fit flat on the floor in the rear cargo area. Should be strong enough to have a blanket and 3 dogs sit on top of it - one of which (the goldish one) likes to randomly chew whatever is near her, so probably some sort of lightweight metal is in order. Any suggestions on any of those items? The wife and I are going on a roadtrip along with another couple in the RRS this August from here in Northern Virginia to Eastern TN - Gatlinburg, Dollywood, Great Smoky Mountains/Cherokee NF, etc. We will be camping the entire time and are taking 8 days to do so. Any suggestions to make such a trip liveable for a large amount of people in a smallish space? I'm thinking about modding up my 4x8 Harbor freight trailer for the purpose.

Soooo....Right now I know what you guys are thinking. Far from an ideal truck for the stated purpose of this site, right? Well yes, I would tend to agree with you. BUT, I bought the truck as a compromise with my wife - she hated the look of the LR3/LR4, and whatever we got, she would be driving a fair bit of the time as it is the only vehicle we have we will put our dogs in (our other cars are a pair of BMW sedans and an old air cooled Porsche 911). The RRS is basically an LR3 re-bodied to appeal to "footballers" (or so says Jeremy Clarkson :sombrero:), so is plenty capable off road (save for that front bumper, man it is low), if lacking in interior space somewhat. Also, shortly after buying the truck, my wife decided to try to park it in a small 5'10" tall section of our apartment building's otherwise 7' tall parking garage. Well, the concrete ceiling of our garage won and I now have multiple gigantic dents and scrapes in the roof :/ So, appropriately devalued, and owing much more than what its worth with such body damage, I fully intend to keep the truck to the end of its useful life (who knows how much longer that will be, anyway :D). After it dies, I'd like to start over with whatever the replacement to the LR4 is, if LR can get the looks sorted in my wife's eyes. For the next 5+ years (hopefully, anyway), however, I must make do!

I look forward to posting more updates in the future, hopefully with some more 'tech' involved. Until then, I'd love to hear your comments, both good and bad. Thanks!

Last weekend I installed a Traxide dual battery kit on my 2013 LR4. The kit is identical to the one many have already installed on their LR3, the only hiccup on the LR4 is that the auxiliary battery tray in the engine bay is presently "occupied" by a large plastic box containing the transfer case module and related wiring. The box can be chucked, the t-case module can be relocated under the same aux battery cover however (on a bracket under the brake lines that normally houses the horn of the alarm system), and the related wiring re-routed to make room for battery and Traxide isolator kit. After that's done, installation of the kit is pretty much the same as the LR3, which is a bit of a PITA - running the wire through the engine firewall to reach the cargo area is especially fun... - but can be done in a few hours with no drilling or cutting whatsoever required, save for the 12v socket holes in the back, if that's where you want them. In fact, I didn't really chuck anything since the process is completely reversible if necessary.

I purchased the newest Traxide kit that now also includes an auxiliary battery guard, a separate device that prevents excessive discharge of the auxiliary, deep cycle battery (the original kit already prevents discharge of the main cranking one, of course.)

Some photos of the finished installation and extra 12v socket in the cargo area. I converted the existing socket on the driver's side to draw juice from the aux battery as well.

I'm looking at 2 different sizes for KM2's: 245/75-17 or 265/70-17

- Both are the same outer diameter (31.7) so no difference in side wall, this is simply about section width.
- I have read Expeditions West discussion on wide vs narrow: http://www.expeditionswest.com/resea...tion_rev1.html
- Both are probably still in the "narrow" range (no 12.5" here) so maybe this is more "super skinny vs skinny"
- My offroading is in the Pacific northwest. So think trees/roots/rocks. Not a lot of mud or sand.

I am leaning towards the 245 (I love the skinny look on older LR's, not sure if it translates to the LR3 or not........) but I worry the 245's too skinny for the offroading I do and the heft of the LR3 (7121 lbs GVWR)?

I was curious what the tires were that they fitted to the Jaguar and Rolls for the last leg of the journey. Sorry for the silly question.

I recently bought a 1996 Discovery 300Tdi Commercial Automatic with 315,000 miles and it drives like its done less than 100,000 miles. It had a recon engine but still on original box. Bought from a farmer so it was a little dirty. The only issue is the aluminium skin on the rear door is peeling away from the rest of the door frame. So this will have to repaired or the door replaced.

It has numerous modifications 4" lift kit, dislocation cones, suspension and steering mods, 33X12.50 GT Adventuro tyres (inc spare), HD winch front bumper, front light bar etc and have bought a new CB radio which needs fitting together with a GPS tracker (should it ever get stolen - hopefully not).

There are numerous bits i want to buy but where do i stop?? I would love to take it on a expedition but its planning and cost.
Here is the thread for that little outing.

Funny thing is I wanted a Roof rack and winch first (after tires of course) but now after going out and dragging on a rock just a little today I think I need skids first. What skids do I need and what kind is best? Which places are the most important to protect first?

What say you? I don't want to screw up the bottom of my truck! Then sliders come next? Then winch and roof rack last.

Just want to protect my $60k

Thanks.

On our last SCLR trip to Death Valley, two out of four LR3s had engine stalls at 9200 feet then again at 4200 feet. The climb to 9200 feet was perhaps 2 hours worth of trail time. The climb to 4200 was heading over to Panimant Valley with about 1/2 tank of gas each. The smell of gas was prevalent. Temperatures were moderate, 75-80F. All four LR3s gassed up at the same station in Olancha. Speaking with other members in our club, there are at least two others have had stalling issues on other trails at varying altitudes. Not very repeatable unfortunately. A few common threads would be partial tanks and trail runs where tanks would slosh. My faultmate does not indicate any faults with the the ECM or EVAP system.

A search on the Google has not resulted in much. The conversation on SCLR can be found here, http://www.sclr.org/roverboard/20-te...l?limitstart=0
Any insight or help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hey guys, I have been lurking here for a bit and always find great information and was wondering if you can help me out a bit. I have a 2001 d2 with about 130k on it. Just this weekend it stated making a lot of noise on start up like a dry start. The oil pressure light is turning off in a normal amount of time. the dry start noise lasts about 5 seconds and then once the engine is running and warm everything is normal. I noticed that the front cover is leaking a bit and my oil level is just the slightest bit low. I haven't put a gauge on it yet but will soon. Is not DD so it can sit until I get more time. I am going to change the front cover and oil pan gasket and was thinking with the noise and mileage that replacing the oil pump itself would be a good idea. I see Atlantic British has these pump gears for sale for $100 which is a lot better than $500+ for the entire front cover assembly. Does anyone have any experience with this part from ab, good or bad? Thanks and any input you guys have on this is appreciated.

Which winch is commonly thought to be best?

I assume that the warn is best but i saw superwinch also. And I also see synthetic cable and I am curious as to why it cost so much more than the steel, is it that much better?

I see also that a few guys have sprung for the 9000 pound warn. Why is that the magic number? Is there a minimum quality or style of winch or strength I need to shoot for?

I have questions about mounting... Hidden or not hidden? Why?
I was told to not hide it because it is much easier when you have access to the winch when you put the cable back on there. But my wife likes the looks of the hidden. What are the pros and cons of each.

Mounting options...
OEM very pricey. Not hidden and looks nice. Are there other bumpers of A-bars out there that work/look good with the OEM mount? Does this mount cut down on approach angle? Is there an after market non OEM version that is of the same quality or better?

As far as hidden there is the Devon and I saw a front runner hidden also but not sure how that works with the factory bummer. And what the disadvantages would be.

Also, does adding a winch require modifying the suspension?

I plan on finding a class or something about winching as I am sure done incorrectly could result in damage or injury. This is not like the ones I had on my ATV's!

I looked for a winch thread for LR4 options and could not find one. This thread has the potential to solve just about every question for this newbie and future ones also.
Seller also states:
The shifter cover is loose, the hand brake and transfer case waiters are worn, and the player that covers the window switches is loose. I have new parts for all of them. The leaks are the rear intake manifold gasket, an oil line going into the front cover (I'm pretty sure it's an o-ring), and the transfer case. I also have a gasket/seal kit for the transfer case.
I believe he's being as upfront as he can be. Are there any questions/concerns I need to ask about? Thank you for all your combined expertise. Walt

Today's front page article about the Front Runner Slimline comes at a good time for me at least...the next big purchase I'm going to make will be a roof rack for the Disco II (maintenance is about half done and my suspension upgrade is also half done {front gained a full 3" from OME springs and shocks...back was delayed by weather this weekend - looks like I'm parked on a hill).

So I've been passively shopping racks for a while now and have found that it's inevitable that I will be spending money...and good money...to get what I want.

Safety Devices doesn't allow for the sun roofs to open...so that's out.

I don't like the lack of rails surrounding the Slimline...so that's out (they may be redundant to good tie downs, but I want the rails).

I'm leaning towards one of the racks sold by Voyager Off Road. They're on "sale" for $900 and shipping would be about $150.

Better ideas out there? I am partial (as the article which spurred this post mentions) to the old fashioned look of Camel Trophy LRs. I'd like to keep the cost down, but also don't want to buy a rust bucket. Now if I can just find that buffalo hide chair.......

Thanks in advance!

These seem to be the only options out there for the LR4 19" rims. I would rather spend the money for compomotive 18" on something else like a winch or roof rack. Gonna need tires this year.

Thanks for comparing if you can, if not have any of you used either one of these?

I have always been a Land Rover fan, from the first 4wd magazine I bought (Camel Trophy article) to the cars I currently drive, I have always loved Land Rovers. Sure, love can be tested, much like the relationship of father and son's or husband and wife, but love is a pretty strong and durable emotion. I also own and drive all other types of trucks and have tremendous respect for Land Cruisers, but it is different. I think Jack Quinlan says it best: "Toyota for work, Land Rover for play"

As I sit and consider the 65 year history of the brand, I would submit that Land Rover has done a better job than all others in inspiring people to explore, and by doing so, they inspire people to buy Land Rovers. Mutual of Omaha, Camel Trophy, G4 Challenge, The Great Divide Expedition, etc.

Land Rover understands the emotional connection we can have with a mechanical thing, what that mechanical device not only says about us as individuals, but where we might be driving too. Sure, it just might be to the local coffee shop, but in a Defender 110, the spectators watching you lumber pass are convinced you are driving someplace interesting, someplace special. I consider the impact that first Camel Trophy article had on me as a young person, a triathlete and college student living in Southern California that was captivated by the images of sand glow Discoveries busting through mud and brush, the competitors participating in the triathlon of driving, combining orienteering, physical challenges and teamwork to overcome the most remote and rugged terrain on the planet - I was hooked. That inspiration changed the course of my life, ultimately resulting in my first trips to Mexico in a Discovery II, all uploaded to my first blog, expeditionswest.com. Expedition Portal and then Overland Journal followed, all influenced in some way by that first article, an article about Land Rovers, about adventute.

That is what I appreciate most about Land Rover - they have inspired me to explore.

Happy Birthday Land Rover. . .

How far back would I have to go to get a LR that would not be effected by an EMP?

I have thought about one of these or a jeep for such an event.

Any experience would be appreciated because it does seem to be getting worse.

I have been looking at options for outfitting our LR3. The first thing that I need to do is replace the 19inch wheels with 18inch wheels. All five of the tires currently on the car are starting to dry rot so I am looking at my options. While hunting around I found the a company called:

"Urban Offroad" http://www.urbanoffroad.us/

I am having difficulty finding any reviews of the company or their products. They appear to have an interesting and I think appealing selection of LR3 stuff including the roof racks.

So first question: If anyone has dealt with this company how was the experience?

My next question is based on the original search I was on. Urban Offroad sells the following wheel: http://www.urbanoffroad.us/index.php...ace-wheel.html

The problem is that it has a 6 inch backspace vice the 6.5 inch backspace and I am concerned about the effect on turning. So second question is:
What is your thoughts on the above wheels?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Shopping for a newer full size RR and having a hard time getting some details and maybe someone can help answer a few questions.

Looking at 2010 or better, but luke warm to the possibility of 07 and up. The truck will be for things like remote family camping, exploring from death valey, utah desert, canadian artic in winter(north west territory, yukon, ice roads) as we'll as regular road trips and daily driver for my wife, so pretty much everything except hard core trails like rubicon and dusey.

What I can't find easely are suspension differences between the years and the SC and non SC engine. I think they made the SC suspension stiffer and it has less articulation, but don't know for sure. I heard the 07 had the best off road suspension, so any details here would help. I'm biased towards softer rates and more articulation but if they are the same then fine.

Next are the diff and transfer case. So now we can get a factory rear locker, but i've heard nothing on the type of housing they now use. is it still the weak 2 pin? or 4 pin design (front and rear). What type of transfer case are they now using? Anybody know if it has a pto cover like the l230 or is it like the bosh one?

I have found out you can get a factory winch kit for up to 2009 if you want that, but not offered after that, so has anyone ever fitted a winch on a 2010-11? I can probably have a setup without one and still get out if I prepare for that, but it's a great tool to have on a stock truck.

Deales have become pretty useless, as so has the north american distributor, took 3 days for LRNA to call me back to say they have no winch kit for 2010 and up, the other questions, we'll they just don't like my kind is pretty much what I get.
