Friend of mine is asking the following, he got the last Dormobile Series 3 every made...

I've got to the stage where I need to start putting additional cables / wiring in my dormobile but I'm not sure of the best way to go about it Here's a few items that are top of the list.

I want to put in a circuit for a fridge with maybe a couple of extra sockets in the same area.
I want to put in interior led lighting front and rear which has two switches.
I want to install a stereo with speakers in the front and rear, I also have a tv that I want to connect to the stereo through an aux socket.
I need to connect up the water pump to power and possibly make provision for spotlights and a rear work light.
In the near future I'd like to wire up dual batteries too.

Obviously I'll need fuses and relays and I'll want to keep it neat and tidy, so is there an "idiots guide to wiring" anywhere on the net ??

Any electrical experts who can give me some advice would be appreciated

Hi guys,
have been forced to post this project on Expo too, so here it is:

It`ll be similar to this unit:

3.2

The difference is that my version will have a lot more power and i`m planning on going up to 50mph.

Tracks will be build similar to my Mini Hägglund, power will be delivered by a 24 cui 2cyl 27hp motorcycle engine with a 6 speed gearbox. Should give me a slow gear to pull some stuff and speed to have some fun...

Started putting some stuff together. Those are the four sprockets that i`m going to use:

I need to get the motor first to decide on the final dimensions. Lenght would be ok on that picture, but i think it should be narrower.

Then i started machining the first part, a sprocket to axle adaptor:

Machined the two hubs for the sprockets that will be welded to the axles:

First i bought some steel today:

Then i started fabricating the two missing sprocket flanges:

That`s the motorcycle that donates the engine and stuff:

After a hour of work:

When i finished parting it out i continued working on the two removable sprockets. I started by sawing a hole:

And bored it out:

The i started machining the flanges between the sprockets and the axle. They will be mated together by those things that i don`t know what they`re called in english. By tightening the bolts you pull two tapers into each other and the friction holds the flange and axle together. Started by boring out the flanges to fit those things in:

Both of them finished:

Then i turned down some scrap to the same diameter than the axle will be:

And munted the flange with one of those things and turned a center on it:

Welded them in:

Then i started with the flange for the brake disc:

And drilled some holes:

I am new to this site and I am loving all the great info!!! I currently own a well used '84 Toyota regular cab 4WD and I am starting to give more serious thought to converting it from a beat up trail truck to a more usable expedition type vehicle. I would love to do some exploring in and around the U.S. but I would also like to do some traveling around Central and South America. I'm not really sure my old Toyota would be up to leaving the country but I have other ideas and that is where you guys come in.

My In-Laws have a house in Guatemala so I am able to visit anytime I want. I have been down there several times and really love the country. When we visit we always try to go see as many places as possible. I believe I would be better off purchasing a good truck in Guatemala and keeping it there for expeditions through out Central and South America. I see several advantages to doing this; easier to blend in to the local population therefore safer, there are plenty of available options that are already diesel powered, and Guatemala makes a good start point.

So here is where you guys who are more experienced can help out. My father in law has a Mitsubishi L200 that I really love to drive while I'm down there. It is diesel and other than the horrible turbo lag off the line the truck really drives great and gets really good fuel mileage. I'm just not really sure it would be the best choice for an expedition base so I was hoping you guys could give me some suggestions for a good base vehicle new or used?

Thanks

Personally, having only attended one Overland Expo (and it is awesome by the way) I received the majority of knowledge from fellow Expedition Portal members who shared their experiences on the forum. It was the pictures, the details, and the stories of the people they met that made sitting at a desk that week just a little more bearable.
Heavy duty coolant engineered to maximize diesel efficiency and engine life.
Technologically superior to all water-based coolants.
•In a traditional pressurized system, the water-based coolant must be maintained at a temperature below the boiling point of water to keep the system functional. The fan energy required to keep the coolant cold enough wastes a significant amount of fuel.
•Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant can protect the engine at temperatures well above the boiling point of water, so the fan runs less and you save fuel.
•Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant has a boiling point of 375°F at atmospheric pressure: and an operating temperature that is always more than 100°F colder than its boiling point.
•Coolant temperatures may be safely increased with Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant due to this separation between operating temperature and boiling point

I am looking for ideas to better organize the interior of my truck to make it more comfortable when on the road. I built a wood box that sits between the center seat and console that works great for snacks and misc. items. I also use is it to hang a radio microphone, mount a RAM ball mount for a tablet an a wireless temp display for the Engle fridge in the back seat. I have a friend that added a cutting board for snacks behind his center armrest along with a chapstick holder on the dash.

Along the same lines I added a holder for pens and pencils and flashlights in my Hallmark popup so that I could find them quickly when needed.

I know I have just scratched the surface, what have you found that works well?

Thanks,

A few months ago I thought it would be cool to convert my turn signals and brake lights to LEDs. I had seen them on my friend Greg’s truck and I liked the crisp on/off quality. I thought it updated the look of the truck and, of course, LEDs use much less power and last practically forever. In this post I’ll tell you everything you need to know to make the switch to LEDs, and I’ll also tell you why I opted not to do it, for now.

There’s a good chance the bulbs you’ll be replacing are the common 1156 and 1157 types. The 1156 is the single pole, turn signal bulb, and the 1157 is the dual pole bulb for brake lights.

First, check the dimensions of the LED bulbs you’re considering against the openings in the lens housings, through which the bulbs must pass. On my 1995 (Gen 2) Mitsubishi Montero I found that a millimeter or two made a difference. All of the bulbs I ordered were a hair wider than the stock bulbs and wouldn’t fit into the housings.

Another consideration is that older lens housings are designed to work with incandescent bulbs, i.e., they’re designed to reflect light from a 360˚ source. If you use an LED that projects only in one direction, light will only appear to come from a small part of the turn signal or brake light lenses. This is especially an issue with the marker lights on some models of ARB bumpers, as the bulbs in the lens housings do not face forward. Even a bulb with multiple LEDs that projects in 360˚, it won’t put out as much light as a standard bulb.

Somehow I thought LEDs would be brighter than incandescent bulbs but that’s not what I found. A standard 1156 incandescent bulb puts out about 400 lumens and costs about $0.50. The most expensive, multi-LED bulbs only put out 220 lumens and costs $24.95. That’s why I ultimately decided not to carry on with the project.

On the plus side, LEDs only draw 170mA, whereas an incandescent bulb will draw about 2 Amps. That’s almost 12x less power consumption. If you need to keep your parking lights on for long periods of time without running the engine, that’s a benefit.

If you decide to move ahead and convert to LEDs, you’ll need to replace your turn signal flasher module with one designed specifically for LEDs. A normal flasher uses resistance in the turn signal circuit to control the flash rate. Since LED bulbs have much less resistance, it throws the flasher off causing the turn signals to blink really fast (hyper flashing). Some sites suggest adding a resistor to the circuit but that creates heat and negates the LEDs low-power-draw benefit. A new flasher isn’t expensive, no more than $15. Some even work with both incandescent and LED bulbs.

This is what the flasher in my Montero looks like. It’s an “EBL” type. That has to do with the positioning of the connector pins. Figure out what type you’ve got and get that one.

Size: 156.1 KB">P1070906.JPG

On the Montero, and probably on a lot of Japanese trucks, the flasher can be found on the interior side of the firewall between the engine and passenger compartments. Here I’m taking off the panel below the steering column. Note the opening for the speaker.

P1070909.JPG

In this view, you can see the speaker opening on the left side of the image. The red arrow points at the flasher relay. The flasher has a pair of plastic hooks by which it snaps into, and holds itself, to its base. These have to be pried away from the base and unhooked in order to remove the flasher, which can be a little tricky.

P1070908.JPG

Once you have the new flasher installed, it’s a simple matter of changing the bulbs.

One note on the Gen 2 Montero turn signal housing. To remove it, there’s one obvious screw, and a not-so-obvious set spring, that hold the light in place. Once you remove the set spring you’ll be able to remove the light. See the page in the shop manual below.
I was thinking of just replacing with a stock Toyota antennae, but wondering if anyone has a recommendation on an aftermarket antennae? I like to upgrade whenever possible so a not-too-costly upgrade would be considered.

What's are my options? What are your experiences? What should I avoid? Stay with stock unit?
Thank you!

My truck has a contractor rack installed over the camper shell. While it works great for ladders, pneumatic masts and other loads that won't fit in my postage stamp sized bed, it does have one significant downfall; tight, brushy trails.

Easy to see here, the gap between the over-cab portion of the rack tends to funnel branches and the occasional downed limb or tree right against the first leg of the rack. We actually had a downed tree in Arkansas slip into that gap on my passenger side and ended up almost pulling the rack off of the bed.

The solution: Limb Risers! We tried tie down straps as a stop gap and they worked pretty well. Not 100% effective but really kept the larger stuff at bay.

Looking at kits online and reading about different mounting solutions/problems on here I decided to combine a concept I've seen on Big Rigs; Bumper Guides.

We used 4130 Steel 1" tubes to raise the cables up and out of the way of the hood and also allow me to spot the corners of my bumper from the cab.

The idea was to make the system fully removable, so I am not buzzing down the highway with limb risers every day.

The Bumper Guides slide into the 1.25" 4130 tube and are held in place by a 3/8" pin.

The end result. The weak link here is the turnbuckles. A by product of the install is it helps to stabilize the front part of the rack, which tends to jump around over rugged terrain.

Looking forward to trying it out!

-Mack

I wrote a post on my blog recently about waterproofing the stock turn signal lights found on some ARB bumpers. They always rust out after the first water crossing. I looked for a way to waterproof them while maintaining easy bulb replacement. It was like trying to find the Northwest Passage. I'm not sure it exists. I ordered new lights (see post for link) and was able to waterproof them with silicone sealant but the sealant has to be redone when you change the bulb. Still, I think the bulb will last longer in a dry housing than a rusted one.

Has anyone else tackled this problem? What was your solution? Here's mine:
(above)I can reach the roof rack (barely) standing at the rear door and on my tip toes...The plywood hooks get dropped over and there it is...Roof ladder...
(above)Hooks over rack...

I need to do one more simple things before I 'll call it done...It need a strap between the bottom stem and the step bumper to keep the ladder taught...If not, it's like a ladder up to a trapeze...

I have a roof rack that I bought brand new a few years ago for $5. It's not the most 'expo' rack out there and I think it looks kinda funny on my zj, but it's what I have so I will work with it. Due to the rack mounts and the roof rail height it sticks up higher than I would like, but I am going to use the space under it for storage of a camping table.
I have test fit a fairing made of cardboard to cut down on the howling and to hopefully help with weather and mpgs. As you can see in the pic, the front slopes quite a bit. This fairing is going to be pretty big and I will probably be making it out of plexi.

I will use some u bolts on each of the four corners to attach the slanted piece. I may have the u bolts sticking out of the top to use them for cargo attachment points. Or I may just use something to use as a spacer to lift the top of the plexi off the rack about 1" and use the rack for cargo attachment.

My question is how do I join the two pieces of the fairing? I was going to use a u bolt with some sort of flat extended piece to attach the vertical fairing to. But I was also thinking about making it so that the fairing could rotate up if I had something longer to fit under the rack. The vertical faring can not permanently extend too far forward as it would block the sunroof from going up.

I hope you guys can make sense of this post!
