From what little info I could find it these tents were used on the Everest expedition by Sir Edmund Hillary. Should hold up to strong winds, rain and snow. I will be using it this weekend fora backcountry trip. Its quite roomy and hope to get alot of use out of it. Stay tuned for a followup report.
I was wondering if anyone is running an AC chest freezer in their rig with an inverter and a temperature controller to convert the freezer into a fridge like these guys are doing in their off the grid homes: http://tinyurl.com/yl2uu5n and http://tinyurl.com/catbupa and http://tinyurl.com/ch3us9s

Advantages are that freezers are well insulated which means very energy efficient and super cheap at Walmart for as little as $140. http://tinyurl.com/bmqkben

I know this works in houses but I was wondering if the constant vibration and bouncing around in a vehicle would mess up the freezer? Has anyone done this or know about this?

Thanks
Has anyone tried one and is there any reason i couldnt run one of these? This one is 20x20x18.

I know the concept of thermoelectric coolers has been hashed out here many times before, but does anyone have experience with the Waeco TC-35? I think that's what it is, and it's on sale at Canadian Tire right now for $180 (regularly $300): http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows...=en#product_aa . I can get a 45L Mobicool used for maybe $90 on Kijiji, but this one seems better in that it appears to have a thermostat, and will cool 30C rather than the Mobicool W45 which only does 20C.

I'm not expecting Engel/National Luna levels of performance, but something I can afford for now to replace the regular cooler half full of ice bottles for max 3-4 day trips. I just don't really know anything about this specific model.

I have a dual battery setup in my truck, and this will be running off the secondary (marine) battery when the truck is turned off. Therefore, I'm not super worried about my battery going flat.

Thanks,
- Andrew.

I didn't want to spend much money making an on/off gravity fed water system using my LCI water cans; so I spent some time at the local lowes and picked up a barbed/crimped 3/4 in to 3/4 in male threaded PVC fitting and a 3/4 in female valve spout and connected them together. The inner diameter of the pour spout on the LCI can is 3/4 in as well; so I was able to tap the barbed end of the PVC fitting into the spout, creating a water tight seal. After the initial insertion using the mallet, I was able to remove and re-insert the fitting with the valve attached by hand and still get a water tight seal. So, for about 5 or 6 dollars and an LCI/Scepter can, you can have running water.

For operation, I found that as long as I open the pour valve first, then the air valve, there is no leakage from the air valve. Order of shutoff is the same: pour valve, then air valve and again, no leakage from the air valve.

Here is the connector and valve. This is after I tamped the connector in with the mallet and removed it.

Hey guys,

So i thought i'd put this out there to the forum and see what you guys have found works best.

I plan on going to Alaska for 6 weeks during July/ August and camping pretty much the whole time. The mosquitos dont really bother me growing up in Australia they're kinda just part of life and you eventually get used to them or they leave you alone. However my South Florida girlfriend read in a book that there are swarms so big they block the sun in Alaska and now she is freaking out.

I'd be interested in hearing what you guys have used or come up with. Please help save my trip my sanity and my relationship.... (im not so worried about the last part)

Someone suggested these patches but said they can smell a little http://www.themosquitopatch.us/

Anything else?

Cheers

We are considering purchasing the Yeti Tundra 70 or 75 quart chest cooler. a Coleman extreme has served us well, but trips for more ice every four days gets to be a bit tiresome. I have heard rumour, that if used properly, ( we open our large cooler once, maybe twice a day, first thing in the morning we move the days meals into a smaller cooler ) the Yeti coolers will keep ice/cold food for over a week. The price is steep, but we do get what we pay for. I've considered a fridge/freezer, but the same capacity would cost well over twice as much, and the longest we are ever away from an ice supply would be 5 or 6 days. Has anyone had any experience with these Yeti coolers? thanks in advance for all input :)

Any direct experience with these?

Been looking for a quality propane torch head for quite a while. I use it while camping to start the camp fire, rig repair, or any other place I need fire. Makes sense as I already carry propane cylinders down the trail for my grill. Hope I'm not the only one. I've purchased a cheap worthington unit but middle of last year it rusted shut and no longer ignites. The hardware store examples are large and bulky also very $$. Is there a propane camping torch? Been looking haven't seen one.

My garage is filling up with empty canisters. I know I need to let go. I am NOT refilling 1lb bottles, I don't want to discuss that either. I have toyed with the idea of a 5lb refillable as well, but I am constantly trying to lighten up and that is the wrong direction.

What I really want to know is. Can you really cook on a liquid fuel backpack stove? I have seen some of the stuff Bemmerchef puts out, but his kung foo is strong...
