I and my wife were there these past few days, to sniff out mid-size trucks and pop-up campers. We expected to find some Nissan Frontiers and more tacomas, but were very disappointed to see zero Frontiers out there, and dozens of tacomas. Everyone we talked to lauded their tacos and though none trashed the frontiers, there was a bit of a herd mind-set there about the taco reliability, re-sale, and on and on..
If anything it made me want to just get the frontier just to prove them wrong! And so, we are still looking for our 4x4 long bed crew cab, low mile Frontier.

Hey everybody,

I thought I'd introduce myself, I bought a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder LE (Platinum Edition if that matters...) this weekend. It's going to be my daily and I'll be adding some more off road capability as time goes on. I thought it might be a good idea to ask what are some of the little routine things I should be looking for? I'm almost positive the diff and transfer case fluids need to be changed. I'm not new to cars or even offroading for that matter, but it has been a while.

Anyway, here's a picture of it, stock as can be.
Thanks for the input!

FWIW, mechanic has given a quote of about 700-800 to install new timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and install electric fans on thermal switch. Cousin has estimated parts from rockauto should be less than 100 (not including fans).

So I'm going to be getting a Frontier soon, and I have a sort of simple question.

Do the 2005 and later versions have similar front suspensions to the first gen trucks? Can I re-index the torsion bars to achieve a small lift, or is this only on the first gens?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if I ever put a build thread in here, so I figured it's time to start one. I did search, but the search is coming up blank.

I've got an 07 Xterra OR 6-spd version, in Granite Stone. My basic goal is to have a decently-capable expedition-style rig that'll serve as a basecamp for getting out into nature. Since the beginning I've been focusing on the capability aspect and less on the creature comforts for camping, though lately that's switched around a bit.

I've named it Off-Kilter, mostly because I end up off-camber when wheeling and I like to wear kilts.

In terms of mods, here's what I've done:

Hefty bumpers, front and rear. The rear's a tire carrier and the front doesn't have the grill guards, but since I got them used and for quite a discount, I can't really complain.

Smittybilt XRC10 winch with steel cable. New to me, but it came with the bumper and it works, so again no complaints. I've had to use it twice now to help others and it's worked just fine. I did pick up a treesaver, snatch block, have some shackles and a strap to help with recovery.

A full set of NX Rocks sliders and skids (rad, engine, t-case, tranny, and fuel tank). NX Rocks was one of the original Gen2 skid makers and I got one of the last sets he made prior to selling the rights to Hefty. These things are solid and have saved my bacon more than once.

While I originally was running 33" BFG AT KOs, I've recently switched to Goodyear MT/Rs with Kevlar. 33" tires again and I do have a bit of rubbing that even the melt mod won't fix, but nothing major. I got the tires for $179 each, which was a lot cheaper than my alternatives, so we'll have to see how these do.

I originally had an All Day Fab spacer and shackle lift, but recently decided to upgrade to Nisstec Light Racing UCAs and Extended Travel Rad-flos up front. This gives me 2" and an extra 100lbs of capacity in the springs. In the rear I've got PRG's 2" shackles and Alcans with 600lbs of extra capacity. I also pulled the rear sway bar to give me more travel back there, but the front sway bar is still there (for now).

I do have a few body panels that I've modded via trees and rocks, but nothing too major there.

For extra lighting, I managed to win two Hella lights which are installed up on the bumper. They're connected to my OTRATTW Zombie Lights switch in the dash.

The only other real mod is a set of removable boxes for the cargo area.

To give me a place to sleep, I fold the passenger seat flat and slide it the whole way forward. Then I've got a large box that slides up to the front. It's hinged on the front portion and inside there are all my plates, cups, pans, and so forth. Each sits in it's own cut foamed cut out. The rear portion of the box has an open base where I can slide in camp chairs, a camp table, and anything else like that.

On the driver's side there are two boxes. The front one is open and I strap down my tool boxes, bottle jack, jackstands, chocks, etc. Normally the cooler gets strapped down on top of that. The rear box is also hinged and has my camp kitchen and stove. Clothes and other light gear tend to get strapped on top of that.

Behind the front seats and on the floor under the boxes is where I'll stash other gear. Spare fluids, a shovel, bow saw, ax and hatchet, compressor, spare fluids, extra shoes/boots, and anything like that.

Front passenger footwell gets my extra water and food (that's not in the cooler). I may also use that for libation storage this time around (think Southern Comfort, Sloe Gin, Amaretto) as well.

Things I want to get to in the future:

An RTT - mostly because while I enjoy off-roading, I'm not about pushing it to the max, so having the weight up top is a compromise I'm willing to make for comfort.

Once I get one of those, it's time to work on re-doing the interior so I've got more useful space in there. The boxes will get scrapped and I'll get some sliding shelves in there, a fridge, and so forth. This way I can have a passenger and the dog with me.

I do want to replace my current e-locker with an ARB unit. The e-locker works well, but it doesn't want to unlock reliably. I've done a few different things, short of tearing it apart, to try and get it to work well, but it continues to devil me, so it's gotta go. Probably will get paired with replacing the front diff with an ARB locker as well. Which means I'll have to have a nice compressor there, too. Hello $2,500 parts bill!

I'd love to have lower gearing available to me when I'm in 4LO. With a 6-spd, I do struggle in some of the more technical sections off-road and being able to crawl much, much slower would make me a happy camper.

Eventually, I may even get around to building a trailer for it, too. Probably get an old military jeep trailer and build it up from there.

Some pics:

I have been shopping for a full size 1/2 ton truck. I has to be four wheel drive because I live in the Northwest and I travel where it snows. It will not be an overland rig, I have a JK Unlimited that works quite well for that. I need to tow various trailers, all weighing 1/2 or less that the Nissans capacity. I will do one of the leveling kits, some quality shocks (Bilstiens) and maybe a slightly more aggressive tire, and and ARB bumper, because deer love to commit suicide in front of me.

I have considered the Ram 1500, but it just doesn't do it for me. I am not into the Ford F150, and non of the GM products interest me.
I looked at Toyota Tundra's, but just am not really into them either. What I want to know is, why is the Titan the forgotten truck? There are 100's of road test that either skip it, or rate it last. But, when I do find a test from a car enthusiast magazine like Road and Track or Motor Trend, they love it.
Whats up with that?

Long time lurker, never poster. Changes today! I am the original owner of a 2000 R50 LE that we have owned since 2000, just about 130K on the ODO. It is our third vehicle, and is mostly relegated to weekend pulling work (ATV's, motorcycles), and simple commutes to the airport. I use my car or our VAN for all of out other daily driver needs.

This week, at about 5 am, when I was headed to the airport, I heard some noise coming from the front drivers side suspension. I could not see anything in the dark when I got to the airport, but when I got back I found the following:

<a href="http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=157848&d=1367156337" title="Name: 8688104963_0388b1d5f8.jpg
Complete spring failure. What you cannot see is the 4 or so inches of coil spring that litterally rusted all the way through. Now...this truck has NEVER been off-road...mostly just gravel road access, parking on grass. This thing has been babied all its life....

So, living in Ohio, we were notified on the strut tower recall from Nissan (due to salt and possible rust issues) -- mine checked out 'fine' -- but I am concerned that this is a bigger issue that Nissan has overlooked? Anyway, I am thankful that I was the one driving and not my wife with our kids in the truck. Has anyone experienced this? I plan to call the dealer tomorrow...

Option 1:
No question, replace both sprints, all shocks -- may as well do a lift while in there -- suggestions?

Option 2:
I have been eyeing the Tundra for a while now, and this may be the push I need to make the change. This failure may be the nail in the coffin for the R50 -- I am not all that interestested in spending more on a truck I may want to replace in under 9 months.

I have a coolant leak that is coming from the gasket were some kind of coolant crossover pipe ties into back of passenger side head. Its not more then a slow seep and it looks about impossible to get to. I have heard that you have to drop the trans to reach it but, to me it looks like you could just pull the upper intake and worst case pull lower and valve cover to reach it. Any one have any experience with this leak or have a coolant schematic diagram they could post up? Thanks for any info on the best way to address this leak.
