My wife and I have been considering a new mid-size SUV to replace our 06 VW jetta as a daily driver. The lack of storage space and a flat floor make the VW pretty impractical nowadays. Three 65lb dogs fill up the jetta pretty quickly and leave no room for luggage or anything else.

We're looking at 2010-up grand Cherokees, Chevy tahoes and maybe Toyota 4runners. Trailblazers are not an option. My wife isnt crazy about the idea of owning a japanese vehicle so the toyota might get axed from the list of potentials. The Tahoe obviously offers more room, power, towing capacity, etc but daily driver fuel mileage is a factor. The new cherokees are more car-like than ever but that works for her. I doubt itll ever see more than the occasional dirt road, i never shied away from dirt roads with the jetta so now ill probably do a little more exploring than i used to. I've never owned an SUV smaller than my '89 suburban on 1-tons and 37s so I have zero experience with these vehicles. The off road capability of the new Cherokee isn't a concern as I've got the suburban for the rougher stuff. Anything is better than a VW, lol!

If anyone has any experience, good or bad, I'd like to hear it.

If you're a fan of the Wrangler JK, you are definitely not alone. Jeep announced that the one millionth JK rolled off the assembly line this morning.

Figuring half the total as the shorter two door model, and half the four door, then one million JKs placed bumper to bumper would make a line about 2,500 miles long. That's more than the distance between the Wrangler factory in Toledo, Ohio and Los Angeles.

Jeep might have sold even more, but their Toledo plant is running very close to maximum capacity. The JK version has been produced since late 2006, and will continue for a couple more years before the introduction of a redesign in 2015 as a 2016 model.

Hello all,

I searched this on the forum and have not found a lot on the Frontrunner slimline 2 rack.

If there is a good thread on this could someone let me know? If not, does anyone have one and are you happy with it? I really was ready to order a Gobi, but then heard about the slimline 2. I like the fact that it is full length, it attaches to the roll bars, and the attachments do not necessitate addition of additional bars for a yakima or thule hookup.

I'm going with a 2.5 AEV lift on a 2013 JKU Rubicon, and this rack is going to be used more for camping, canoeing, kayaking and some trips to MT and CO. Maybe a roof top tent someday, too. I like the idea of the Frontrunner as it is so versatile with its accessories. The interior storage rear rack and the rear slider, look good, too. The more I think about it, the more I think I am sold on the slimline 2. I also know that Gobi has a very strong following, however.

This is my first post and I am new to this, so any advice would be appreciated!

I've really wanted an FZJ80 for a long time, but finances appear to be dictating otherwise. So I've chosen an XJ for my next vehicle. I've built an XJ before (here) so I have what I would consider a significant amount of experience, but as I'm pondering all of my options, I thought I'd see what the forum members say about my "plan".

It will be daily driven 22 miles per day and see about 30% off road us in the Colorado Rockies and Utah. The plan is for a mild lift, armor, winch, double-locked and the ability to carry a family of 5 and all of their gear. I may add a trailer to the mix :ylsmoke: Any items I can find used on CL or other forums will be procured that way.

Here's my "build sheet" in the order that I'd like to get things (lockers and gears would be at the same time). Let me know what I'm missing, or what you think I got wrong... :snorkel:

Basic protection and upgrades:

DPG Offraod Aluminum radiator
Hood Vents (style TBD)
TNT Frame Stiffeners
JCR Sliders, or this: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost....3&postcount=34
JCR Steering Spacer
JKS Axle Skid Plate (the mini ones that go on the LCA mounts)
JCR Gas Tank Skid
JCR Transfer Case Skid
JKS Lower Front Shock Bar Pin Eliminator
Front Winch Bumper- JCR Offroad- DIY (I will DIY this since it's a "kit")
Rear Bumper- JCR Offroad- DIY (I will DIY this since it's a "kit")

Consider Matt and www.formatfab.com for custom work that may be cheaper

Advanced protection and upgrades:

Lift 3” (DPG/OME Deluxe w/JKS disco) <- Does this come with leaf spring bushings?
JKS Rear Shackles (through TNT)
Tires 31x10.5 (or 16" equivalent)
Advanced Adapters SYE
JKS Adj Trac Bar
TNT Track Bar Drop Bracket
JCR Bumper Frame Tie-In’s
JCR 1-Ton Steering Upgrade (or anything to get rid of the “dead spot”)
JCR Sway Bar Mount Kit (required for 1-Ton Steering)
JKS Lower Front Control Arms
4:11 gears

Locker options:

Eaton E-Locker / Front – D30
Eaton E-Locker / Rear – D35 (or D44/8.8 swap)- no 8.25
ARB Air Locker for 8.25 – (add $ for compressor)
OX Locker / Rear 8.25 (Cable actuated)
OX Locker Front D30 (Cable actuated)

At this point, or maybe previously, some of you are probably wondering why I'd be buying a lot of these items when I can fabricate my own stuff. The short answer is that I'd rather spend my time with my family and on the trail and not in the garage.

I've been here a while, lurking and was wondering if some of you may be able to help me on my recently acquired 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport. To start off the story, I originally thought that this particular liberty was a 2004 Sport. I included the brief history because I may end up asking more questions.

My cousins liberty wouldn't stay running, her father checked the fuel pump and all was good, he thought it may be the CPS sensor.
My cousin recruited my help in changing her CPS sensor. She lived in South Dakota for a while, and somehow she managed to NEVER wash her Jeep. I ended up breaking the CPS sensor off in the engine and gave up sadly. A week later my cousin was planning on getting a new car and ended up offering me her 2003' Jeep Liberty for $1000.

My uncle returned from a business trip and took a look at what I had managed to damage and noticed that under the rear of the vehicle there were some frayed wires dangling a bit. Upon further inspection it turned out to be some apparent that some creature(s) were chewing on the wires that run from the wiring harness beneath the drivers side rear seat, through a grommet in the floor, to the speed sensor, and fuel pump. (Probably the original reason the car was not running aye?) After a tray of decon, which was all consumed, followed by a bit of dessert on some more of the wiring, my brother and I got some time to work on the vehicle some more this past weekend.

We managed to get the CPS sensor out after a rough battle with the MANY rusted bolts, exhaust removal, and of course the sensor. That fiasco solved, we took to the wiring harness. I removed the entire rear section of the harness from the Jeep and jotted down the part number.

03' Liberty Fuel Module Wiring
(P)56010096AE
http://www.moparpartsoverstock.com/p...6010096AF.html

Apparently a replacement from an online source is around the $200-$300 price range.

I paid a visit to my local salvage yard and found an 04' Liberty (which I thought that I owned) and decided on pulling and purchasing the piece of the wiring harness.

04' Liberty Fuel Module Wiring
(P)56010598AC A
http://www.moparpartsoverstock.com/p...6010598AC.html

A replacement of this part online costs about $40

What is the difference between the two parts? One says a "rear speed sensor" is included. Could the harnesses be spliced together to work?

Thanks,

Has anyone fitted a Superwinch 9.0? It says it will not fit, but I'm guessing it is the external brake that is causing issue. Usually it does not fit by just a few 1/16th. A little trimming and it works. But just want to see if anyone has seen this or experience this scenario.

Also, is everyone using the provided shackle mounts or are you doing something different? Maybe something that face mounts to the bumper and can be reinforced with a backer plate? See the bottom pic?

My next rig (my first ORV rig), a '01 Cherokee with 4.5" lift, trimmed fenders and 33" BFGs.

<a href="http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=160538&d=1368379481" title="Name: cherokee.jpg
I put a lot of love into that rig. Had a bunch of issues with it after I bought it and fixed them all myself (having only ever changed the oil before, learned with Google and YouTube). New 3-row radiator, water pump, thermostat, auxillary trans cooler, brakes, fuel pump, exhaust hanger, wheel-to-wheel tie rod conversion, and much more. Ran like a champ, I still miss that rig.

After adding up the cost of everything I wanted to do to the Cherokee (axles, roll cage, gears, lockers, etc...) I decided just to purchase a Rubi. I went with an LJ for the longer wheelbase and extra space, but not so long as a JK 4-door. Got it bone stock with 48k miles and immediately went to work.

Flat fenders, 2" Skyjacker BB, stubby bumper, new brakes and Superwinch 9000.

<a href="http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=160539&d=1368379713" title="Name: 2_lift_fenders_bumper_winch.jpg
After awhile I ended up moving to San Jose California for work (and, admittedly, for proximity to the Rubicon trail which has been a life long dream). Once I got out here, I went straight for the 35" tires.

35_tires.jpg

Turns out the BB was only netting me 0.5" now due to the increased weight and worn out stock springs. Next up a 4.5" RE short arm lift.

4_5_lift.jpg

Then came the trial run, the Rubicon trail! Scratch that off the bucket list, of course I'll be back twice a year now :)

rubicon.JPG

Next problem was that the new flex on the front caused the driveshaft to rub the stock transmission skid. Next up, Tummy Tuck, 1" body lift, and 1" MML (no picks of install for TT and BL).

mml.jpg

Since then I've done lots (couldn't find pics). ARB Competition diff covers, rear security drawer for tools and recovery gear, fire extinguisher, flash light mounts, and recently a Tom Woods XB front driveshaft.

tom_woods.jpg

With all the added weight and while chugging up mountains out here I'm running into overheating issues (getting to 230 degrees at some points) it's time for a cooling system upgrade. Next weekend I'm installing a Griffin 2-row aluminum radiator, B&M auxiliary trans cooler and grill inserts (to keep the leaves, bugs and rocks out, not for looks, come on it's a Jeep).

After that I've got lots of plans. River Raider cowl snorkel (humvee style), on board air compressor, dual batteries, Mean Green alternator and keep the stock for a dual alternator setup and on board welder, Mean Green starter and keep the stock as spare, chromoly axle shafts and hubs and keep the stocks as spares, GR8 top half cab hard top, White Knuckle Off road rock sliders, AEV diff sliders, Garvin rear bumper with tire carrier and jerry can mounts, Gen Right 31.5 gallon safari gas tank, some sort of on board fresh water system, and some sort of custom front exo-cage and roof rack. Lot's to do as time and money allows. I'll post more detailed information here about future work. Planning a two week Utah Traverse next year and "need" most of this stuff done before then.

The goal of this rig is to be a comfortable daily driver which is as much at home on the Rubicon trail as it is on expeditions in the desert for weeks at a time.

Is anyone running or planning on running the new TJ rear bumper from ARB? I like that it is much slimmer than the the old version. Having the tire attached to the tailgate is nice and reminds me of AEV's setup.

Here is a PDF of the bumper.

Thanks

In the late 1960's Kaiser Jeep won the bid to product some 5 quarter (1.25ton) multi-use trucks for the U. S. Government. They beat out G.M. in the bidding and produced thousands of these for the Military. My thought is, it would make a great expedition build-up. It has a removable arctic cab top; the front windscreen folds down, and half doors in true Jeep style.
And so the querrie is: has anyone done this before? If so, step up and let us see pictures and specs.
The rig looks like a Jeep Gladiator on steroids with gigantic half-round front fender (reminiscent of the Dodge Power Wagon of old) with a foot of tire clearance before the fender and a sturdy Dana 60/Dana 70 axle arrangement with extremely low geared pigs. They used a T-98 Borg Warner trans. (6.40 low gear) and a divorced Dana 200 t. case, with 2:1 low range. The worst part of the truck was the aenemic Kaiser in-line six, which was barely able to put 110 horse power to the ground.
However, with a Cummins diesel engine (either 4BT or 6BT) and a Clark 280 VO, 5 speed 5 ton truck trannie, this could be a winner.
Anyone done this?
I've had and built a lot of Jeeps in my day, but this one is the biggest Jeep ever factory-built.
Hoping someone has,
regards, as always, jefe

Hey Guys & Gals, So I recently just became the owner of a 1972 Jeep Wagoneer with the drivetrain out of a 84' Chevy K5. (6.2 Diesel, 700r4, NP208, Dana 44's on 35x12.50xR15's. I traded My 99 bravada for it & basically gave up all the luxury & all the options for something more... Practical.
So that all being said now I have alot of work ahead of me.

building a new harness for engine.
Building a new harness & replacing the stock guages for functioning ones & adding acouple.
Building a new harness for the taillights. (Right now only the blinkers & headlights work)
Finishing the linkages for the transfercase.
Finishing the exhaust.
Re-doing the brakelines down by the OP.
cleaning up & re-doing some of the interior.
Minor body patching & Paint.

& That's all before I really get in to modding it.. haha

Well heres a few pics from the day I picked it up & from the OP.

I have this crazy idea that I am going to drive my flat fender from Durango, Colorado to Missoula, Montana, go on a four day spring snow-wheeling adventure with some friends, and then drive back home. Oh yeah, in late May.

I am planning on taking a two lane highway route north to avoid the interstates and allow myself to slow down a bit. The happy speed on the flat fender is about 50mph.

I will have 3 full days for the drive on the way up, be playing in the snow for 4 days, and then have about 4-5 days for the drive home. I don't want to rush so I have tried to give myself enough time to tackle a trip like this. I will only have to cover about 300 miles a day on the way up and less on the way back.

Did I mention that the Willys is all torn apart in the shop right now getting some new 5.38 gears in the front?

Did I mention that I leave in 14 days?!?!?!

Did I mention that I have to pack camping gear, 15 gallons of extra fuel, parts, tools, clothes, a cooler, and myself into a flat fender?!?!?!

I will be trying to post from the road into this thread. I don't know how well that is going to go. Lots of pictures will be taken on the trip along with some video I hope. Its just me though and time is a little limited so don't expect a feature length movie or anything.

And go!

Hey there, I've been lurking on the site for a while and love the many builds. I've got an interesting project going on my XJ and figured I should share for others with similar ideas. I've had my ride for ~11 yrs and it's served me well. She's on 35" MTRs, JK Rubi frt axle and 8.8 rear. It's been great for trails and occasional camping. My biggest complaint is it's a real hot box since I deleted A/C a few yrs ago. I considered lots of options and finally came around to retrofitting a Libby Sky Slider rag top for some serious ventilation. I went through basic dimensioning and shape assessment and figured, yeah I can make it work. So I found one on car-parts and away we go.

The top is huge, will just about replace the whole roof.
Size: 73.2 KB">SkySlide_2.jpg

The contours are very close to the XJ shape.
Size: 64.9 KB">SkySlide_1.jpg

No turning back, here's the roof cut out. The stock x-members will be replaced with tubes.
SkySlide_4.jpg

Biggest downfall I anticipate (besides wind noise and water leaks) is the height when it is open (~6"). I'll be adding a halo bar with crossmembers and clearance will be tricky. I'd also like to have a basket that isn't a mile high. I'm thinking about a basket with 2 heights for roof open or closed. We'll see.

That's where it stands now. Hope to have it glued in in about a week.

Hi. I have a 2004 expedition prepped 4Runner (see sig line) that I truly love but wanted to build an overland JK. I'm keeping the 4Runner, as it is everything I hoped it'd be. This JK may eventually replace it, but for now it will share the stable. I will not be getting too radical for now with the Rubi. My intended purpose with it is that it get me 505 miles from Yorktown VA (where I do contract work for the .gov) to outside Knoxville TN, should a catastrophic event take place. My kids and family are there and I intend to be with them if things get hairy. I have been a prepper my entire life, since way before it became a national rave, and the people who used to think I am weird are now asking me for advice. I'm a retired soldier and former SWAT cop, who has been contracting stateside and overseas (war zones) since 2003. I teach all the tactical subjects that normally come to mind; Weapons, Driving, CQB, etc. I specialize in a few others, survival being one of them. I have traversed the war zones, urban and austere, in soft-skin and fully armored vehicles...Land Cruisers, Hi-Lux's, HMMWV's, Suburbans, even a heavily modded F-350 with welded-on hillbilly armor. I've spent many nights sleeping in or around these vehicles and have grown fond of it. My 4Runner even has all rear seats removed and a bed built into it. It works well for that. The JK is a bit small to sleep in on a regular basis and I will be looking at various sleep options for it...not 100% sold on an RTT yet. Maybe a simple tent, maybe a decent off-road trailer.

I knew I wanted a Rubicon but like the MOAB bumpers and rock rails. I did not like that the MOAB didn't have all the Rubicon off-road mechanicals. I was going to order a 10th Anniversary Rubicon, but found a brand-new 2012 Call of Duty MW3 2-Door with exactly what I wanted, namely a six-speed manual, 430N, 4.10, painted fenders, and hardtop. The sticker was $41,700. I offered $35,000 and eventually it was accepted. We later added $300 to deliver it the 220 miles to Knoxville from Columbia TN. I took delivery on 23 March.

This is a long thread so I'll get to posting pics, but I have far more to decide and do on this build.

As Expedition Portal continues to grow and expand as an online community it is not only our members but also our sponsors who make it all possible. ExPo would like to welcome Schutt Industries and the XVENTURE Off Road Trailer into our community and thank them for their support. Some may recognize the XVENTURE from episodes of Expedition Overland as Clay and his team have been taking an XVENTURE through all sorts of terrain over the past couple of years. Thanks again to Schutt Industries, they have provided a bit of background on their company and some images of the new XV-1 overland trailer!

Schutt Industries Corporation is the go-to source for standard and specialized military-grade
trailers with all branches of our military armed forces since 1998.

Schutt Industries Corporation is best known for its flagship line of military Light Tactical Trailers.
With over 40 years of trailer production experience, the LTT line brought about new construction
technologies to trailer manufacturing like all aluminum weldless construction incorporating
the revolutionary Huck Bolt from Alcoa.

Our larger units are impressive feats of engineering, functionality, and build quality.
Schutt Industries trailers are crafted for the toughest jobs on earth.

Introducing the XVENTURE XV-1 Severe-Duty overland trailer.
Schutt Industries is proud to launch its first product for the civilian market.
"We are honored to become a part of the Overland community and look forward to
serving you with the finest products of their type ever developed for the civilian market."

"XVENTURE is a serious professional vehicle. Unlike most light-duty welded steel tube
platforms supporting plastic or single walled metal enclosure overland trailers, we’ve
incorporated the exact same architecture we produce for the military."

"Her exceptional construction incorporates a 2.5 x 1.5 inch rectangular 1/4-inch walled
aluminum tube chassis. Assembled using Huck Bolts instead of welding, XVENTURE’s
chassis and cargo bed provide vastly superior strength and resistance to stress from
I am going to do the DPG Ultimate OME Kit so the HD Springs, BL and MML, etc. I am going to run 255/85/16 Toyo M/T's I am also going to order some Stockton Steelies in 16x7. Not a lot of info on 16x7 Backspacing. Would it be any different from 16x8? Thinking 4.625 BS Too much too little?
Would this not be the best choice for such an event?

So today I purchased my first jeep. Long story short I had a datsun 720 that I was building up did an engine swap and started on a SAS but realized I was doing all this work on a vehicle and I have never even 4x4d before. I learned a ton on it and decided to part it out and pick up this xj.

So today I purchased my first jeep. Long story short I had a datsun 720 that I was building up did an engine swap and started on a SAS but realized I was doing all this work on a vehicle and I have never even 4x4d before. I learned a ton on it and decided to part it out and pick up this xj.

Plans are:
full tune up and fluid replacement
plugs
wires
cap
rotor
all fluids
inspect brakes
fix oil leaks (rear diff cover/rear main seal ick! not looking forward to that one, valve cover gasket)
Brakes

After that I am going to dd it for a few weeks make sure it is reliable enough to take on some plain old camping trips. Then will come a mild lift and 31" tires thinking all terrains.

So here are the specs:
200k kms
auto
power windows/locks
A/C
Everything works except the ignition was busted in an theft attempt

Paid 400$ and drove it home without any issues except a boost and warped front brakes after being parked for 3 years.

Picture of when I got it home. Looked a quite a few some newer ones as well this one looked the worst but for some reason rust on the undercarriage was non existent compared to the others maybe the older ones had a better undercoat? Even the rockers rusty just the doors and around the windshield it seems... very strange must have been the running boards.

Could not leave those horrible running boards on had to take them off asap!

Looking for some suggestions as to common problems and things I should replace besides what I listed earlier.

Also going to try and keep this under a pretty tight budget as my Skyline GTR eats up most of my free money! hoping to keep it around 3-4k

With the snow gone and the sunny day, I decided if I wanted to to have my JK Unlimited ready for the summer, I had better start building her up :smiley_drive:

Here is what she looked like a from the dealer. The dealer had installed the Rugged Ridge bumpers but other than that she's stock.

Well, I have added a few bits and pieces before today but now she is a two seater

Prior to this I've installed a winch and panted the grill black.

Gobi Roof Rack - I'm planning on having a Howling Moon Stargazer up there if they ever come in :smilies27

and Rugged Ridge tire charier (front and rear bumpers came with the jeep)

Now I've need to decide what to do with the inside. I have an ARB fridge I'd like to mount and maybe some sort of storage but I'm undecided on just what. First thing I'm thinking about is getting the whole tub LINE-Xed.

Edmunds.com bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler two door, and proceeded to modify it using parts from the Mopar catalog. They added stronger axles, a suspension lift, taller off-road tires, lower gears to compensate for tire size, and some body armor. They kept careful track of gasoline consumption. The results are posted here
http://www.edmunds.com/jeep/wrangler...for-march.html

In brief, the EPA says drivers can expect 18 mpg in combined driving in the 2012 Wrangler. Edmunds recorded 17.3 mpg before the mods, and 16 mpg after the upgrades. Not bad, considering all the changes they made.

Been back in country for two weeks now. I've gotten a few things done on the jeep between the honey-do list. The main two are an on-board shower and installed an Engo 9K I got last year.

.

With the recent advent of cheap winches I could not resist installing a rear winch. Always wanted one may never have to use it but for now I like it being there. Places I go hauling my trailer I can see the day where it would be nice to have a winch out back.

.

I planned a fancy cross member mounting but after staring at the placement for a few hours and building several versions in my head I decided the KISS method is best. I used a flat piece of plate welded to the hitch. I happened to have 1/2" plate at the house so I used that but I'm sure 3/8" would do nicely as well. With my design 1/4" would be too thin. Even with the control box on the winch there is still room for a 3" stretch. All in all this design is the lightest way to install a rear winch on a JK.

.

The hitch is a RR copy of a factory one, the rope was sourced from Woods, and the bumper is expedition-one. The rope looks good. The rope is a 3/8" but is more like 7/16" when not stretched; it dwarfs the viking 3/8" rope that I run on the front winch. With 100' the drum is full. If the wraps aren't tight there may be issues. Time will tell if I leave it 100' or take off some.

.

The pics are pretty self-explanatory....

.

No fancy CNC plasma cutting here. I used a good old fashion torch.

After grinding, welding, and paint she looked like this...

.

It sits a little higher than the hitch, higher than the factory muffler. The lowest hanging point is the exhaust tip.

A view from level...

.

Thanks to my 1" body lift the gap above the factory cross member and body is perfect for this design. The first rope wrap is just above the cross member thanks to the angle from the fairlead and drum height. The last wrap is about 3/8" below the body. Even if the frame or body flexes all points where the rope could touch is smooth. There was just a small factory weld splatter on the cross member to smooth out.
