I'm exagerating in the title since game laws may outlaw such technology, but still there are interesting ramifications of such technology for shooting sports and public safety. Essentially, the Tracking Point Rifle uses computer technology that dang near ensures you hit your target everytime... even from 500 yards out.

Excerpt:

On a firing range just outside Austin in the city of Liberty Hill, a novice shooter holds one and takes aim at a target 500 yards away. Normally it takes years of practice to hit something at that distance. But this shooter nails it on the first try.

The rifle's scope features a sophisticated color graphics display. The shooter locks a laser on the target by pushing a small button by the trigger. It's like a video game. But here's where it's different: You pull the trigger but the gun decides when to shoot. It fires only when the weapon has been pointed in exactly the right place, taking into account dozens of variables, including wind, shake and distance to the target.

Picked up my new .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun 1895GBL. It's got great fit and finish, I was a little skeptical after all I had read in online forums. But like anything else it seems there are multiple opinions on every subject (For true gun reviews, I like realguns.com for his excellent descriptions, dry whit, sarcasm and real experience) Out of the box it was very accurate, hitting a 6" target offhand @ 100 yards with the first 6 shots (that's about all I wanted to shoot at first). It's a smooth handling gun with tolerable recoil. I bought it for hog hunting down south, but now Wayne County in Upstate NY is going to allow rifles this fall so it'll get some use here too when I'm not using my Ruger 77 MKII 7 mm mag. A few modifications from Wild West Guns like a new trigger and ejector along with a scope (eye sight is fading) and it'll be perfect. :ylsmoke:

I have been all rookied-out on my gun cleaning kit and tools, despite having some pretty special family heirlooms and some nice modern firearms.

This is a start to getting my act together, but I am curious what others are using.

However, I've purchased a rifle in 338 Norma Magnum, and the ammunition is really expensive. ($120 for a box of 20)

I'm considering loading my own ammunition.

What kind of investment can I expect to have to make in equipment?

How steep is the learning curve?

Will I be able to get results that are equal to or better than match grade factory ammo? (If I can't expect to attain consistent, high quality results, it's not worth it for me.)

Will I save lots of money loading my own?
