Second question.

The torsion bar cover is that a standard aluminum tubing and thats all? where does it attach to?

any help would be greatly appreciated as mine had a broken torsion bar when I bought it and was missing both these parts.

Operation Oxcart AKA Gini's Burden-A Four Wheel Camper story

So with the evolution of builds and meeting people with various types of rigs one develops a sense of what works best in a given configuration. My first brief chance to check out a Four Wheel Camper was at a gathering of friends from the Portal and new faces which would become friends and lead to other adventures in there own right. Jeff Wanamog's awesome FWC Eagle build was inspiring to say the least. He is a skilled craftsman and fabricator. Seeing the ease at which his Tacoma handled the FWC on our trek to Wheeler Crest impressed me. The dream was put forth. Many nights were spent online looking at various builds and modifications to all kinds of pop-up campers.

Wasurf and Overland Hadley both moved into pop-up territory. These two individuals are quite capable in fabricating what will suit their needs. Hadley's Tardis build is more than impressive. Taking a shell model and outfitting it in simple well laid out way got me to thinking more about a clean slate too. This whole time the goal was a well built out Eagle. Preferably new so I could have exactly what I wanted. This is a costly choice. The Tardis build showed that it was quite possible to have enough to camp for long periods with minimal kit and cost. A shell model. Could be the answer.

FWC began offering a new option not too long ago. The Silver Spur. White has been the standard for RV's and campers for at least a couple decades. Before that it was the modern aluminum look which had its roots in aeronautical pursuits. There is a romance of sorts in the history of car camping in the silvery hue of the Airstream. I see the Silver Spur as a look back at those times when silver tubes were towed all over our nation. Not only a shell but a Silver Spur shell.

Along comes PTO with his Silver Spur Finch. Slightly optioned. Unique. Simplistic yet comfortable. Well thought out. This and the Tardis were setting my mind in motion. Some things in life seem meant to be. Another member noticed some posts I made hinting about my want of a FWC. He was interested in a flippac and let me know if I wanted to sell mine to get in touch. Shortly thereafter PTO contacted me to see if I was interested in buying his FWC Finch. Wow! Are these two working together??? In only a couple weeks discussions were made and the deal was on the brink of taking place.

Saturday I headed down to San Diego to finalize the sale of my Flippac. I arrived and the buyer was ready and prepping his truck. Another friend, whom I met at the first Mountain Rendezvous, suggested we just swap our bed rail systems since mine were already drilled for the Flippac. This worked like a charm. After a couple hours at most the flippac was on the new owners truck and he and his wife were already gleaming with thoughts of trips in the future. I've been there too. I sent a text to PTO to see if later in the afternoon would work out for me to pick up the FWC. He was good with that and I shot off to AZ. The trip to the metro area of Phoenix was pretty simple. Some interesting sights along the roadsides of the Arizona.

This was a big weekend for our community with the Overland Exp taking place up near Flagstaff. Since I didn't plan on picking up the FWC on Saturday I didn't bring anything to camp per se. I arrived at PTO's place and he did more than help get the FWC installed on my truck. Thanks for all the help! With the FWC installed I pondered going up to Overland Expo. I was excited to get home and begin loading it up with the basics. The drive home was a long one and I really should have caught more zzzz’s up at Chiriaco Summit. I saw the sign for “free dry camping” and drove a short ways back. Saw more of the tanks for the Patton Museum and didn’t think to go further. Wish I had. It’s even right by the airport. Another destination by land and air! Definitely need to come back and check it out.

Getting further along the way closing in on home I got to the Banning Pass and got hammered by the wind. I’m used to coming down 395 South of the Eastern Sierras and getting blown all over the road. This was a new experience. At first a strong buffeting developed. I slowed slightly. Then the real fun started happening and I heard the vent cover on top of the camper making noise. I pulled over to have a look. It all seemed in order. From there on out I drove at about 50-55. Pretty sad.

Out of the pass I saw something very strange. A row of lights in the sky just slightly above a freeway overpass in the distance. What in the hell? Was I seeing things? It was late and I was tired. Area 51 is quite far away. No it happened again…and again. When I arrived at the spot I pulled over to enjoy watching a night time crop duster doing his patterns above a field. From and aviators point of view it was awesome. With most of the fun over it was time for the inland empire and finally home to Orange County.

The next day was quite fun. The camper was home. Time to take the jacks off and start packing it with what I had in the Flippac. I knew it couldn’t hold everything. I was surprised when only two items weren’t included. One being an old sleeping bag I kept in the truck just in case I needed it. The other is my three legged camp toilet. I’ve decided to go with a 5 gal bucket anyhow. After I had it all dialed in I took it to Long Beach Airport and took the usual photographs.

What I have planned at this stage is an airfoil/dam up front to help with air flow around the camper. Kodachrome has a huge wing in the front which is quite simple of design and looks to be a winner even though it is ginormous. I am also looking at the Lagun table. A second battery system is in order as well. I bought the fridge PTO had in the camper. It seems to be a perfect fit. A second battery system will also allow for use of the lights in the camper. Why have them if you can’t use them. I never hooked up the light in the flippac and we made due quite well. Nothing like a Snowpeak Hozuki lantern and headlamps.

Now quite a few may be scratching their heads as to the name. I liked how Overland Hadley found a name for his FWC. I kept wondering what I would come up with. Oxcart aka Gini’s Burden. The name Oxcart was used by Kelly Johnson to describe the A-12. Predecessor to the SR-71. In Kelly’s mind it was the furthest thing from an actual description of the capability of the A-12. After many years most aviation enthusiasts found out about Oxcart and the humor behind the name. The name Oxcart immediately brought the image of the A-12 and not of a lumbering beast of burden. Well now I may use it to relate to my slower going pseudo titanium goose.

Ah the burden. My truck is named Gini after a nickname my cousin gave my mother Virginia. Well now the Gini has more of a burden to bear. The burden is also a benefit as it provides shelter. I think she would get a chuckle out of it.

So I’m really not sure what to name it for sure. I do know as of now I’m happy with what fate seems to have made happen. As far as I know I am the first to have a dark gray truck with the Silver Spur color. I think it works quite well.
Enjoy the journey.

With Flippac, nothing in the bed
Hope you enjoy. More to come. I put up the camo curtains today that were in my Flippac. Looking forward to getting out on the trail ASAP.

Fairly new to the forum I have a Scamper with a Stable Lift system and would like to know how the floor is attached to the sides of the camper.
The reason being I would like to be able to unload the camper and use it with out worry that the floor will separate due to lack of support. One thought I had of support was to strap across the bottom and thru bolt into the lower walls in two or three spots any thoughts or ideas will be welcome.
Thanks Bill

A security consultant mounts a Four Wheel Campers pop up to a 1980 Chevrolet C70 medium truck to create a bug-out vehicle for his family. Sandwiched between the truck cab and camper is a bulletproof command center surrounded by a Faraday Cage.
The C70 is powered by a gasoline V8 that can also run on propane. The consultant thinks propane may be more readily available than gasoline or diesel fuel in a true crisis.
Anything in particular I should look out for?

They seem to be pretty well made from my research. The build process on their website looks pretty thorough and well thought out.

One thing that does concern me, and keep in mind this is just from pictures, is the lift mechanism looks WAY too "lightweight" for a pop up roof. The upside down U-shaped bars that fold up look to be very small in diameter and it appears to have a tiny fitting(like something from a bimini top on a boat) held into the frame with only 2 screws or bolts. But I also haven't found any evidence of their roof supports failing, so it may be stronger than it appears.

Love to hear from actual owners, good or bad.

Thanks!

So this factors into my build but I'm curious thoughts on locks/deadbolts for campers.

For my build I have some of the typical camper handles with integral deadbolts. However these locks are pretty dang generic and for instance the same key sets I got with my new locks would open the locks on my old FWC. I don't know if some key numbers are more common thus the reason that occurred or what. Looking up the stats there are 50 combinations so the odds are against getting the same one, however you can buy a keyring with all of them if you want. So generally speaking there are decent stats that if you were ever in a area with a bunch of campers odds are someone has a key that would match your rig. Now granted people are generally good folks and heck you can usually just un-velco a normal pop-up trailer side to reach into it.

CampLite-Camper-BIG-BathDoorHandle.jpg

Typically adding a deadbolt isn't a big deal and adds a layer of security. However this is where my build challenge factors in, my top half comes down and covers part of my main door where my locks/latches will be and a typical deadbolt has quite the projection. The thought that pop'd in my head is to use an interior locking only deadbolt if the wife really wants one (the outer plate on those projects much less). If I do this to lock/unlock the main door deadbolt would require opening the access panel (in the lower part of the main door to get into the camper when the top is down) and reaching up to turn the knob. With that I mind I just foresee not really using the dang thing so part of me says don't bother. If we're really concerned drop the top down (which overlaps over the door and thus you can't use the main door). Installing a normal deadbolt on the access hatch isn't a challenge, but again circles back to really needed or no...?

Anyways I'd like to hear thoughts from the crowd as I'm going in circles and need to pick a path soon to knock out a door design and keep progress going.

Hi guys:

I am something of a dreamer. If something is good, I like to pass time thinking of ways to make it better. If something is bad or goes bad, I have to fix it. I hate paying somebody else to fix my stuff. Sometimes I have to pay...but that's a route of last resort. But I spend a lot of time imagining what something might look like, how it might function, what need it will fill, etc...long before I make any changes in my rig...or even fix anything. (Hey, take a look at the FlipPac Fly process and you can start to see how I think...)

So, that's what this thread is about. Imagination. It is not a build thread. It is a what if thread. I know full well that many guys will look at this thread and say:

"This is stupit. Why would I want to waste my time dreaming up ideas with billy bee. He's a goon."
And you'd be right. But I need an outlet right now. I am back in school* at 50 for a second career as a prison chaplain...hopefully. So, I am totally cash poor. And I have had two rounds of 7-plus-day-long migraine attacks this quarter that forced me to drop my spring classes. So, while I have lots of projects in the hopper that require (and shall receive, says my wife) my attention this summer, I have some time to dream up some new ideas for the rig.

We'll start simple. Here's the rig:

I bought it about three years ago with 75k on the odo. Rust-free. Completely stock. But it once had a 5th wheel hitch bolted in the bed. So, it's seen some towing duty. I slapped my FP on it and shoved the carpet kit in and started camping.

Since then I have installed an IBS dual battery kit. Installed two sliding windows for a pass-through. Bought a fridge. Bought a solar panel and controller, but have not yet installed them. And put new tires on the truck. Otherwise, I have kept on top of basic maintenance and added 20k to the odo.

So, here's where this gets interesting to me. My dreams, roughly in the order in which I think I might pursue them:

Install the solar set-up...

Figger a decent fridge-mounting solution...

Figger an awning solution...

Figger a roof rack solution...

Make the interior more livable than the carpet kit permits

Improve the suspension without lifting it much

Create an external storage solutions, like a hitch-mounted rack in the front...

Create better internal storage solutions, like racks/shelves that attach to FP walls...

Address the sucky FP tent/fly deal with Karl at SLO Sail

That's enough for now. This thread may be better off in Full-Size Domestic. Mods, feel free to move it. Meanwhile, I'll address each dream in a different post in this thread in the coming weeks. Welcome your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks guys,

This is a rare Wildernest camper top. The top opens like a clamshell to produce an amazing tent. GREAT for any camping conditions. BIG zip vents. LOTS of ventilation!

This is in excellent shape overall. New stuts. The lock works and has a single key. Slider on the cab side.. so you can reach through from the truck cab. Glass is all good... with a nice tint. Fabric is in amazing shape. One tiny tear in the mesh of one vent. One of the nicer Wildernests you will see. I have had it on my truck for 4 years.. time to pass it on. I bought A Toyota Dolphin!

I have the metal supports ... plus the fiberglass poles which go across the top of the tent. (this provides a firming up of the tent to shed water and wind. I also have the two window braces. THIS IS COMPLETE ON ALL LEVELS.

THIS IS FOR A LONG BED 7' truck. As you can see its on my 86 Toyota Truck. I believe the dimensions are 86" by 56"-58" Fits 91 and older Toyota LONG bed trucks.. although might fit yours too.

First come first serve cash. IF you are looking at the ad, you know what this is.
After a few years of use my wife and I have decided to sell our well cared for flippac. We bought a nice little spot in the mountains and placed a refurbed airstream on the land. Now most of our camping adventures are spent with the lonely flippac sitting unused. I plan to put a regular cap on the Yota. If anyone is interested in a great deal on the east coast for a flippac. see the details in the for sale section. We hate to see it go but would rather someone get some use out of it.
