KInda looks like it's set up to be used like a capstan?? (spelling) put a couple loops around it and let the tension pull the line. Nice Idea.

I meet with the brothers who own Merlin Trailers at the Billing Land Rover Show last year. They were both great and I enjoyed talking with them and showing them the Chaser we took over for the show.

I thought their trailer was well made, it's very traditional in design with leaf springs and a solid axle. There is very little ground clearance, room for travel or larger tires with the fenders being so small. Remember most Overlanders in Europe will run a 245-75-15.

I've seen that in pics of Austrailian Outback rigs. Used as a capstan winch.

I've also seen similar devices on passenger cars & finally had to ask as I could not figure out their purpose. Turns out one particular brand of easy-on, easy-off tire chains uses a part like that.

Finally, I have noticed similar parts on other cab fwd trucks. Those usually have deck tape on them, they're a step to climb into the cab!
