Are you more concerned with the lock when you're in the camper, or when you're away? For security when it it, a slide latch would be as strong as the material its fastened to, and have no exterior...
Its hard to say what the limiting factor is for towing capacity, especially on a modified vehicle. The rear axle's weight capacity may or may not be an issue, but there's also the size of the brakes...
The main difference between AWD and 4WD is the type of transfer case. An AWD van still has a front diff like a 4WD van would, so to re-gear you need to change both ends. There's a thread here...
That's for Europe. Odds are very high we won't get that in the USA (and with only 156hp, don't really want it.)
With finished walls, the widest (longest if you're sleeping across the van) is 70" according to Sportsmobile.
If you want a comparison with numbers, look at this chart from Lifeline batteries (others manufacturers will be similar). You'll see that for a given energy capacity, all wet-cell deep cycle lead...
Typically, a 200Ah 12V would be the same weight as a 400Ah 6V battery, since both batteries would be storing 2.4KWh.
So the comparison should be between two 200Ah 12V batteries in parallel vs...

Didn't you promise us pictures of the 4x4 Sprinters from last year's event? :)
Its a Sportsmobile (that particular dealer is listed at the bottom of the page as one of the stocking dealerships). For some reason, Sportsmobile's website states they only sell them through...
Actually, the reason Earthroamers dominate the early part of this thread is that this thread, when first created was called something like "Earthroamers spotted." After awhile, some non-Earthroamers...
I'd be worried about the GAWR of a Dana 44 (3500 lbs) when asked to hold up a diesel. I'd bet a typical 2wd diesel van has more than that on the front axle, empty, before adding the extra weight of...
The answer is simple - fiberglass molds. By keeping the layout the same, they can use most of their existing molds.
I'm sure they look great on Hummers - give that 30" wheel look without having easily bent wheel lips. :)
Funny how somethings are just a few years away, for decades.
Throwing out a slight threadjack, an E-camper/J30 style top would be awesome on a flippac style shell. However, anything that doesn't require a rainfly for a truck would be great.
Actually, in the extended FAQ:
The stuff looks awesome - I'm envisioning the undercarriage and wheels coating in the stuff and not having mud stick. From reading the FAQs, it looks like it will...
Odds are someone forgot to re-up the registration. Happens to small businesses more frequently than it should. If its still down in a couple days, I'll change that guess. I was on the site recently...
Shorter than a CX? Must be built on a short bed chassis, which makes sense give how everyone seems to want extended or crew cabs. Its tricky to get a good layout in that little space and still have...
The current tent on flippacs is what keeps me from buying one. Where I tend to camp would require me to use the rain fly all the time, and that doesn't look like fun.
Have you looked at the Jeep...
How far back depends on the tongue weight/pin weight of the trailer. That 10k trailer rating would have been with a certain tongue weight a certain distance behind the rear axle. If the tongue...
We Americans like having options. There's a thread discussing our preference on door types: Barn-doors-or-sliding-door-on-Van-Pro-Cons
Once you add 4wd and heavier axles, you might be past 3.5t with a completely empty 7.3 van.
I wasn't thinking Unimog, but instead vehicles like 4x4 Sprinters and Varios. I understand why they...

Oh the irony. Here in the USA, we'd kill to be able to buy some of the European trucks that we never see.
