New shoes for a fat pig (DRW to SRW)

Good pickup guys. That machining was exactly what I was thinking about. The only difference I had was still bolting the rotor on from behind but running the bolts through and having a face plate/adapter on the outside. It would increase the track width by an inch or so but provide a much better clamping surface.

So the studs would go through the rotor, hub and then your plate? If so then yes, I think that would be a great setup.

The more I look at your axle pics the more I want to say its a Dodge product. I know for a fact that I have done brakes on more than one first gen Dodge cummins SRW versions and have seen that "Budd" casting on the hubs. I wonder if perhaps Quiqley didn't do a little mix and match either. Perhaps they had it built with parts from Dodge or Chevy from the spindles out. It would be nice for you to know for future reference, like ordering parts. What side is the front diff on?

That would be the general idea. The plate would actually be an adapter so that the 9/16 coarse thread bolts that hold the rotor to the hub would hold the adapter plate in place. Then there would be another set of wheel studs (9/16 fine to match the ford) in a separate set of holes recessed.

Just getting the SRW dodge hubs with 1/2 stud holes and getting it drilled to suit the 9/16 studs is my first preference at the moment. Off to NAPA warehouse shortly to see how I go.

It's a kingpin Ford axle for sure, but who knows what Quigley did to modify it. It's most likely an 86-91 housing, but I know that Q gets axles directly from Spicer so it may be something specific to them. Hopefully they can tell you more.

A guy came by the shop last week with an 02 V10 SMB Q suspension and it had a kingpin axle too. Quigley usually stays with whatever axle the trucks are running the same year, but this one threw me for a loop. I always verify with photos before someone goes to my kit.

Unlike the newer SD axles where you could just unbolt the dually adaptor you have to change the whole hub on to a SRW on the older axles.

True, but the unit bearings for the DRW trucks have shorter wheel studs than the SRW so they need to be changed too. Found out the hard way :D

Good to know. Did you just get new wheel bearings or change the studs?

So its a Ford drivers side drop king pin 60. Betcha Quiqley spec'ed it and Dana built it with off the shelf parts that you wouldn't see together normally on a Ford or GM or Dodge 60 but you would on a Quigley 60.:)

OK had a reply from Quigley. Seems like they put a D60 from a 1986 K30 in it originally!!!!!!!!! And this was a 1998 conversion!!!!!!!

So at least I know a bit of what to look for. The main issue I have is that I thought the Chev stuff had smaller diameter holes in the wheels. Good news as far as I can suck out of the Pirate D60 bible is that either Chev or Dodge should work including brake spacing and that they are both lug centric so there should be no issues with my new wheels. (famous last words).

You are SO lucky they were able to answer you! I called Advanced 4x4 to ask about my van and they didn't have any records from that far back. BUT, they were extremely helpful and pointed me in all the right directions so kudos to them and kudos to Quigley!

I actually owned a 86 K30 dually crewcab for a while and it did have the big studs. Awesome truck.

So your front diff is on the drivers side? The outer brake pad does look like Chevy. At least you know what it is now for parts ordering.

The SRW Dodge hubs would be my first choice too. K.I.S.S. is very nice when you are a long ways from home.

OK so Chris is sorting out getting me some Dynatrac Pro 60 hubs that will hopefully be delivered by the weekend (expo is just around the corner). I figured rather than try and hunt something up 2nd hand I would just get new ones and know they will fit (hopefully pleaaasssseee OK why isn't there a smiley of someone praying, who needs all those happy ones).

This is what I would really like to do in the long run and has always been in the back of my mind when selecting the 19.5 wheels. UJOR front end and F550 axles with 45 degree turning radius to make up for the extra couple of feet of wheelbase I have. Getting a wider wheelbase would not hurt the stability either. Only real concern I have with then is the unit bearings.

Yeah but it is in Atlanta and the guy wants $1500 for it without the 8 lug conversion (no worries for me as I would just get an adapter made to suit the 8x6.5 anyway). I will keep looking for something around the $2000 for both front and back with the same gearing and preferably LSD. (tight ******** eh)

Nice axle porn.:Wow1: Shipping would be the killer on it though.

I have replaced a lot of unitized wheel bearings and balljoints on these newer trucks, not so many packable wheel bearings and kingpins on the older trucks. I think I would keep your kingpin, serviceable wheel bearing axle and take some grease, grease gun, and wheel bearing nut socket with me on trips. A box of latex gloves, rags, and a plastic bucket to keep the grease/gun in will keep you and your rig non greasy.
