We need to figure out how to get these to the US. Holy crap it's awesome.

Good luck with that endeavor.

Iirc they first need to meet federal crash standards which means they must first be tested locally to confirm compliance. That means one sacrificial unit has to be imported for just the testing. Then there may be additional smog emissions requirements depending on your local state laws.

Of course if you have a residence in say Central/S. America where these are sold, it may be possible as a 'tourist' to drive one in the states 'indefinitely' but you'd have to research that further for your state. Its likely you'd need to drive it here from the country where you purchased it.

That's a beautiful rig. We're going to get our Gen III project going here soon, as soon as my pops gets off his butt about it.

This is true, but the real reason why these are not sold in the US is because the Big Three have effectively lobbied Washington to keep the Chicken Tax in effect for 50+ years. Why would Mitsubishi bother investing in US crash and emissions testing if crony capitalism means their products will be taxed sufficiently to make a base model Triton cost as much as an Escalade?

No, if mitsu could sell them they would have imported them.. their problem was, hardly anybody bought monteros hence the reason they're not here anymore.. IIRC, the peak for US Montero sales was in the early to mid 90's then they went downhill from there...

Concur with Ray. BTW additional tax was/is only on short wheel base 2 door. Which was retaliation for similar tax on US built vehicles aka Wrangler.
