Comfort of a RTT mattress!

A lot of us here on the portal own a RTT, some get used more than others. Does anyone ever wish their mattress was just a little more comfortable/plush? I have had vast orthopedic injuries and a RTT is what saved me from giving up on back country camping, only now my hikes are shorter and I sleep on my roof instead of the ground, it's a fair compromise! However, I still wake up with lower back pain and sore hips, no way near as bad as sleeping on the ground though. Has anybody done any thing to increase the comfort level of their RTT mattress? Ideas, Pics?

We don't find our Eezi-Awn mattress to be particularly comfortable. IMO, it needs to be made from higher density foam, and perhaps be a little thicker as well. I believe they may have a newer or optional mattress that is made from higher density foam.

We use several 2" thick Thermarest self inflating mattresses under ours, which helps a great deal with the comfort. I think this is a fairly common strategy for those that aren't completely satisfied with the stock RTT mattress.

Kind of a shame because it does take away from the easy set-up/tear down, but it's worth it to sleep well.

I have a Mombasa RTT, and thought the mattress just a little too firm for me. I have RA and am very familiar with lower back and hip pain. I bought a King size 3" memory foam topper, and cut it down to size. It fit perfectly within the tent's mattress cover, with a bit of squishing and cussing ;) It is actually more comfortable than my bed at home, now.

No, I'm using the memory foam in addition to the foam mattress, both inside the zippered mattress cover. What kind of RTT do you have, Ward?

Sometimes my Autohome mattress feels too firm (6' 165 lbs), other times its not too bad. Probably depends on how tired I am. I have used my thermarest on top of mattress at times.

The model of tent is not important, I am Just looking to see what other orthopedicly challenged campers have come up with so that they can wake up without sore joints.

post up some pics of your beds!

But each model of tent has a different mattress, which might need different solutions.

Not sure how a picture of mine will help, but I'll try to remember to take one next time I'm using the tent.

I am doing my very best here to avoid this thread from turning into a "my tent is better than yours thread" Savvy. I'd like to see a broad range of ideas people have come up with regardless of your kind of tent, heck ground campers chime in too! If you have a pic of your set up that's cool, if not no sweat.

I also use a combination of the memory foam and supplied mattress. I did not think about putting them both inside the mattress cover, I need to try that. It is definitely a big improvement over just using the supplied mattress which I think was rather uncomfortable.

I tried sleeping on the easi-awn mattress for one night and woke up crippled. I bought a couple of REI pads (like Thermarest) which really help :coffeedrink:

Yes but each tent may or may not fit every different solution. So knowing what you have and what your solution is helps determine what fits and what doesn't.

I didn't think it was coming across as a pissing contest.

I currently have a Ezi-Awn 1400 series 3 rtt and find sometimes I wake up wishing it had a more comfy mattress and other times it's just fine, usally the 2nd or 3rd night is better than the 1st. Also owned a EA Globetrotter which had a thicker mattress and It was very comfortable, don't recall ever waking up stiff/sore on it. I'am going to try using a eggcrate type pad to augment the tents mattress since I have one in the garage and see if that makes a differance.

Standard AutoHome Maggiolina AirLander 3" mattress.
Sometimes it feels a little hard, sometimes not.
I think Mike from AutoHome uses a 1.5" featherbed on top of his, I may try that.

It is fairly comfortable though, I sleep fairly well on it, maybe better than home.
Cotton flannel sheets and a winter weight down comforter from The Company Store.

Mike sells that barrier that goes underneath the mattress too that is suppose to help some, but I am waiting to see if he can source the material locally.
