Cliff notes version: Truck is in Italy with a blown engine. I'm in Africa on deployment. My truck is a 01 Taco 4 Door 4x4. The engine had just rolled
100k. I really hate to drop the money to have a used 5VZ-FE shipped over and installed. We're talking $3-4k with no improvement to gas milage or drivabilty. Are there any european diesel engines that I could swap in and keep my auto transmission? Other than that I'm thinking 1UZ-FE. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Even if you can point me towards resources or whatever. Thank you! Vince

I've heard of some people swapping and loving the 5 cylinder Mercedes turbo diesel. I was just reading about it the other day, now I can't find it

You'l be able to pickup a toyo diesel in italy pretty easily
we have the d4d hilux's here, and almost all the recent hilux's were diesel I'm no expert on toyo's though as far as will it mate to your gearbox. |

Thanks for the information,
I would name my 1st born son Tacoma to appease the Toyota Gods if I can stick a 1KD-FTV in there. If anyone knows anything about compatability on this that would be awesome! I found that there is a Japanese diesel KZN185, that is a perfect canidate, but a half cut is $8K plus shipping and install. Most of the stuff I've found is for older 4cyls with 5 speeds. Please keep it coming, espcially anything Tacoma related! Thank you Vince

legality.
-- Is the vehicle "legally" in Italy? That is, can you sell it, or must you export it at the end of your tour? -- If you can sell it at the end of your tour, must it meet Italian specs? -- If you drop in an odd engine, will it still meet U.S. specs so that you can take it back to the U.S.? You need do do a little bit of homework on the vehicle' legal status before you swap any components. You don't want to end up with a vehicle that you must destroy - and even that is expensive. Best wishes, but be very careful!

Dude you're over in Europe... Get a 1KZ-Te 3.0L I4 Turbo Diesel... I bet it's even easy to find one with a 5spd over there (something that's hard to find through the few importers we have here in the US, they're all slushbox auto's) wich is an R151 and a GREAT tranny. That motor with a 5spd behind it in any truck would be flat out amazing. I really wanted one in my 89 4Runner but they're just hard to find over here let alone with a manual (and I don't "do" automatics). Why not find an old 4dr SFA 2nd (84-89 and my favs) or 3rd Gen (like our 89-95's) with a Diesel in it? The 3rd Gen truck might even have the 1KZ-0T/5spd in it already, I thought the late 2nd Gen Surfs (4-Runners) had them. Maybe it was the 3rd Gen (96-01?) Either way there are bound to be soem amazing trucks around you that you're just not going to find here in the states. Then when you bring it back just register it as an old truck you find in the Junk-yard (for the US VIN) since they're nearly identical except for the 4dr's, Diesel and SFA, unless you run across a true Toyota nut at the emissions/DMV you're never going to have an issue.
While you;re at it could you bring me home one too, I've got an old pastured truck I could use to do exactly this... man I need to get down to S.America Course the 1UZ could be sweet too That's alot of motor in a Taco. Whatever you do keep us up to date, I'm suprised to hear that a Toyota motor let go at only 100K. What's the story behind it, did it have a PO who was just really hard on the truck??? Loose oil pressure??? What happened??? Cheers Dave
