Default engine woahs

so my 22re is showing some symptoms of old age and its been suggested to me that i should find a replacement. should i find another 22re, possible set up for a turbo. or is there a better drop in engine that would give a little more power.

the 22RE is a pretty good little engine... ive seen a few differnt ways people have gone on the toyotas, the diesels out of the mercede's 300D cars work pretty well and get better MPG, and on a more extreme note the Acura all alluminum V8's are pretty nice... i think ive seen a Yota with one of these in it... i do know they sell conversion kits for it. what about a V6 out of a newer one?

yea i was thinking one of the newer v6 engines. but if what the PO said is true and that my current 22re only has 60K since its last rebuild. then something is up, but i'll know for sure after i have someone look at it. in the mean time i have to look into other options

its sorta funny its been down in the 40s lately and my 4runner has been running alot stronger... still havent taken it to get it looked at, but i really think that my current 22re isnt as far gone as i think. and i really wanna redo the exhaust. i was driving on the highway and i think i was running about 4K rpm and it sounded like a caged beast. also i need to do an sr5 cluster swap of mount a tach. not having a tach is killing me

careful of the exhaust studs in the head, the alum strips very easy. if it sounded bad, ie lots of clanking, check the timing chain, the guide wears out completely.

its not really a clanking, i got under the hood while it was running is its more like a chugging sound from the intake.i honestly dont like the amount of tube from filter to intake. and im thinking about shortening it, but theres that sensor on top of the filter that i dont know how to get around.
