I say it that way, because, there are 40-50 (Real) XDs from '96, and they did have roof bars. 28 were used in the 1996 ECO-CHALLENGE in British Columbia. There are a few good pictures on the net.
Ho Chung has one and I think he's been trying to sell it. My son told me about one the day before he was deployed, back in January, and had me go buy it. I drove it to Maine that weekend, and 2 miles from the end of my trip, passed another. The next day, I went to track down the owner, found him and he flipped out when I drove in, and I told hime I passed his the day before. He says, "which one was it?, was a girl driving it, or a boy?" Turns out the guy has TWO of them. I took pictures of the three lined up with the mountains in the background(temp was a balmy -15F), but they are too big to post here. One of his is an original ECO Challenge '96, and the other is a 97, 4 serial number digits away from ours (Check and make sure it has a Special Vehicles plate rivetted to the apron in front of the radiator, right side, report the SN back here. BTW, I paid WAY less than 10K, ans have a line on another MINT one for WAY less also, but my wife is saying no at the moment, thinking an NAS110, an RRC, a D1, two series trucks and a Freelander are enough
