Samsung has announced the third generation of its popular 7 inch Android tablet. The Galaxy Tab 3 in WiFi only form will ship in about a month. A version with cell phone voice and data capability will be available this Summer. No word on pricing just yet.

Compared to the the Galaxy Tab 2, the Tab 3 is only modestly upgraded. The dual core processor speed gets a bump to 1.2 GHz, and a model with 16 GB flash memory will be added. the screen resolution remains 1024x600, pretty low by today's standards.

The Galaxy Tab 2 is popular among overland travelers because it's inexpensive ($179 these days) and has a GPS chip to enable accurate navigation. There's no word yet if GPS will be part of the Tab 3 WiFi models.

Google is expected to announce an updated version of its 7 inch tablet, the Nexus 7, next month. If you can wait, it might make sense to see how the next generation Nexus will be changed before purchasing. It's likely that the original Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Tab 2 will be available at lower prices after the new models ship.
